Subject: A few clarifications

1) Everyone can here the dwarf's yells. He's a dwarf after all and can be extremely and obnoxiously loud when he wants to be. No effects are affecting the sound.

2) Virif was the only one in a position to notice the fleeing couple other than the merchant. Kyara was off ahead of the group and the other two were worrying about the brigands to the south of the caravan (the couple ran north). The merchant was worried about not dying when faced with a skilled swordsman.

3) I do fully understand the racial abilities of the characters, and hopefully you can trust me to account for them (though I admit I'm not perfect so I don't take offense to the occasional reminder). In the case of Virif, I have taken that into account with the description I sent him.

4) I will try to do any knowledge skill rolls and such as the party encounters things, but if you want more specifics or want to apply a specific knowledge skill to a specific thing, event or situation please let me know in the out of character text. This applies to Spellcraft checks as well.

5) The guards that were at the rear wagon of completely gone. If you want to more thoroughly investigate that spot for any furhter clues or signs, please do so. The wagon itself is still present, with the splinters of the broken wheel still attached to the rear axle.

6) The brigand that got splashed in the face with acid was in negative hit points after the attack. Thus his cries silenced. As of the current post he may or may not be dead as far as the characters know. Regardless his cries of ceased.

Thanks and hopefully you guys are enjoying this thus far.

"I think we need something a bit more elegant than the simple banging on pots and pans with blunt instruments."

*He reaches down from his seat at the bar to a beautiful wooden case, etched with intricate scrollwork.*

"Perhaps something from the strings."

*There is a pair of clicks as the latches come open. With tender care he pulls an ebony Shamisen from the case.*

"Dakarta my friend, I believe you have some instrumental talent as well if I'm not mistaken. Care to join me?"

*His fingers dance over the strings producing a slow melody filled with the mysticism of the orient.*

"What manner of dance do you prefer? Something slow, something a bit more upbeat or something suitable for a barroom brawl?"

Subject: And then there were...

Virif disappears into the forest at a dead run in search of the fleeing Jocelyn and Harl. In moments he is gone from sight into the underbrush and shadows of the trees.

The skirmish at the front of the caravan continues as the brigand swings down hard barely missing Allyn but embedding his blade in the side of the first wagon. Allyn takes swift advantage of the situation and clubs him upside the face, spinning him around to face the grinning Heironymus, blade still stuck in the wagon behind him.

(Allyn hits the brigand him for 3 hp of damage)

Raif struggles against the snaring roots and vines of his own spell as he aids his faithful hound in breaking free. Just as the last weeds are pulled from Marga they clamp tightly onto the druids ankles, holding him fast.

Heironymus, now smiling into the face of the soon to be deceased brigand simply raises his mace and brings it crashing down on the man's collarbone. With a sickening crunch he crumples to the ground in a heap.

(Heironymus hits the brigand for 7 points of damage)

A lone brigand remains on the south side of the wagons, standing in the midst of the entangling weeds. Seeing the last of his allies crumble at a powerful blow from Heironymus' mace, he turns and flees as fast as his legs can carry him, somehow managing to leap around and dodge every grasping root that attempts to trip him up.

Seeing the fleeing man Kyara looses one final arrow at him, striking him in the arm. Adrenaline overcomes his pain however, and he keeps running into the relative safety of the forest's shadows.

Allyn nods his thanks to Heironymus. "Thanks for that. For a moment I thought he would be the end of me."

Silence reigns as the agonized cries of the acid burned brigand fade away, only the winnies of frightened horses can be heard.

"Jocelyn, you can come out now. It's safe." Allyn calls to the rear of the caravan. His eyes go wide with fear as he slowly realizes she isn't there. "Where has she gone?!? They must have taken her! We've got to find her! Why didn't you protect her?!?"

As everyone's gaze is drawn to the rear wagon you all notice something a bit out of place. When the combat started their were two guards there: One with two arrows in his chest and another crushed beneath the weight of the wagon. Neither can now be seen. In fact, it seems that the broken wagon wheel is still attached to the wagon when you remember for certain seeing them remove it prior to the attack.

Well said my flirtatious friend. Meri is a fine dancer I'm sure.

*Raises his ever present glass of fine wine in her honor*

But where's the music might I ask? You can't have any manner of exceptional dance without some sort of music to accompany it. The laughter and good company of friends is well and good, particularly here, but life holds little meaning without a little melody.

So you all know, there is occassionally some of the game that goes on via PMs. For instance, if someone makes a Spot check that the rest of the group fails on, or someone goes off by themselves and encounters something the rest of the group doesn't know about at the time. I leave it up to you what to tell the others in game about what you've seen or encountered.

Just thought you shold know.

The only spell I could find that seemed to be what you were looking for was Sound Burst (2nd level cleric spell in the PHB). That affects everyone in a 10 foot radius so I assumed you wouldn't want to do that and moved on to your second option. I hope that is sufficient.

Virif recovers from the slice and, dodging beneath another savage cut, unleashes a splash of acid right into the face of his foe! The brigand drops his blade and falls to the ground clutching his face in pain.

(Successful defensive casting. Hit the brigand with Acid Splash inflicting 5 points of damage)

The merchant takes a slice from the brigand, but manages to return one in kind, cursing all the while.

(Brigand hits Allyn for 3 points of damage, Allyn hits the brigand for 4).

Raif manages to continue avoiding the grasping roots and brings his scimitar blazing across, opening a fine line in the brigands throat. It takes a moment before he realizes he is dead. He almost gets another swing of his blade, but his mortal coil shuffles off and he falls dead. His corpse is quickly claimed by the grasping weeds.

Marga continues fighting valiantly with the underbrush entangling her.

(Raif critically hits the brigand for 10 points of damage, Marga fails her saving throw vs. the entanglement again.)

Heironymus casts his crossbow aside, drawing his heavy mace and heading to assist the merchant. Moving into a flanking position the cleric levels a blow at the man and connects solidly. The crunch of bone can be heard and a grunt of pain as the brigand loses his balance for a moment before recovering from the blow.

(Heironymus hits the brigand for 6 points of damage. See Q&A thread)

Kyara, just seconds away from launching an arrow into the now dead brigand turns to her other entangled foe and looses an arrow at him. However, just as she does so Moon Dancer rears up as the entangling vines grasp at his hooves causing the shot to go wide and disappear into the underbrush.

(Kyara misses... I assumed you wouldn't want to waste the shot on a dead brigand)

The now free brigand takes a look at his dead companion and bolts towards the woods as fast as his legs can carry him, barely managing to avoid one particularly large root that grabs at his ankle.

(No arrows are fired from the woods this round)

Virif levels a mighty blow against the brigand he is battling with, but to his amazement the man smoothly parries it and comes back with a quick strike of his own. He gets his weapon up but not in time to protect him from the entirety of the blow. The steel slides along the dwarf's right arm opening a wound as his parry holds.

(Virif misses. The brigand strikes Virif for 3 hp damage)

"Help me you curs! What am I paying you for!" Yells Allyn who remains sorely pressed by his skilled opponent. Blood now stains his fine clothes and the brigand thus far looks none the worse for wear.

A well aimed arrow sails past Raif as he charges into the entangling undergrowth, impaling one of the brigands in the chest. She rides forward, moving in for the kill.

(Kyara hits the brigand, inflicting 6 hp damage)

Raif and his faithful hound charge into the undergrowth intent on ending the existence of the two entangled brigands. Raif's scimitar opens a cut across the torso of the man who now has an arrow in his chest. The entangling magic, however, is unable to differentiate friend from foe. Marga gets tangled up into undergrowth before she can reach her target. She struggles mightily against the roots holding her.

(Raif strikes the brigand for 5 hp damage. Marga fails her save against the entanglement.)

Heironymus looses a quarrel into the side of the brigand fighting Allyn.

(The shot hits for 7 hp damage)

Arrows fly in from the north side, one hitting Kyara in the leg and the other passing harmlessly behind her galloping horse.

(Kyara is hit for 3 hp damage from the arrow).

The brigand nearest Raif raises his sword and swings at the druid. Impaired as he is by the grasping roots and vines he finds himself off balance and his attack swings wide.

The other brigand on the south side manages to pull free from the entanglement and firms his stance against the charge of the riding elf.

There is no sign of arrows from the south side.

Subject: It begins...

The road around the caravan erupts into chaos as the battle is joined.

A sphere of red fire sails through the air from the hand of the newly roused dwarf, bursting as it impacts one of the charging brigands north of the caravan. The instant of intense flames leaves the man's clothing burnt and armor charred black and the smell of burnt flesh reaches your nostrils at his approach, yet he charges on, angrily lashing out with his longsowrd as he reaches the dwarf that caused him so much pain. But Virif is rather nimble for a dwarf and manages to dodge aside as the powerful downward slash whistles just inches from his flesh.

(You strike the brigand for 10 points of fire damage, wounding him badly.)

The other brigand charging from the north heads straight for Allyn, attacking in the manner of a trained warrior. His attacks, however, yield no better results than his companion's. Allyn attempts to return the attack, but he is no match for the brigand's training and fails to successfully land a blow.

In the flurry of clashing blades and piercing arrows you (Virif) see Harl and Jocelyn fleeing the caravan into the northern woods, chased by a flurry of arrows that embed themselves into the ground at their heels. Harl leads the way, guiding Jocelyn with his left hand, sword held ready in his right.

At that moment Raif finishes his spell casting and the underbrush along the southern side of the road comes alive. Grasping weeds and roots wrap themselves around the two brigands charging from that side, tripping them both. They struggle and manage to regain their feet by sheer brute force but, for the moment, they are ensnared. Marga, the loyal hound, stands ready, guarding your (Raif) flank should one of the brigands get too close during your casting.

Heironymous aims his crossbow at one of the now entangled brigands, but seeing as they are temporarily incapactate, chooses to hold his shot. (Inaction is the price for the lack of a post)

An arrow lets fly from just up the road as the scout turns and fires into the trees. There is no cry of pain, and no body falling from the branches, so the result of her attack remains unknown.

Two more arrows fly from the trees on the southern side of the road, diving towards Raif and Marga. One hits a nearby wagon with a dull thump, but the other bites deeply into the dog's flank.

(The arrow hits marga for 8 points of damage)

(This post is in initiative order. I look forward to seeing what you do next.)

I will do all of the rolling. Post general actions in the game thread with any game mechanics (attack bonus, skill check bonus, etc) in parenthesis. Description is always good. In your case, does your character say anything before pointing the crossbow at the nearest charging bandit, and which one is he shooting at? Something like "He raises his crossbow and looses a bolt at the nearest bandit" works fine, but any additional actions or such should be described.

I'm also working on putting together maps for future encounters that should help clarify the layout of where people are and such. Which, by the way, the attacking brigands are 15' from the caravan (on either side) when they clear the cover of the trees.

Two of the guards put their backs firmly against the crippled wagon and slowly lift it as Harl works to remove the old wheel and replace it.

A loud bark and a snarl from the hound beside Raif is your only warning before a pair of arrows pierce the chest of one of the lifting guards. The sudden attack forces him to release the wagon. With a thunderous crash and a blood curdling scream of pain the wagon crashes to the ground pinning the second lifting guard beneath it. Harl dives to the side as the wagon falls and barely avoids being pinned himself as the arrow-ridden guard falls tot he ground.

More arrows rain in from both sides of the road, one stopping Raif short by embedding itself firmly in the wagon not inches from his head. From each side of the road two men charge out shouting battles cries with swords raised high.

"Someone wake the dwarf!" Allyn yells as he grabs a staff from his wagon to defend himself. "I'm not paying him to sleep while my livelihood gets stolen!"

"Jocelyn, take cover in one of the wagons!"

As instructed, the merchant's daughter promptly dives under the fallen wagon, seeking shelter against the deadly arrows.

It would have been possible to find a map of Valin, but nothing beyond its borders. At least nothing that is verifiable as quality and reliable.

Such a map would reveal the eastern reaches of the Demonspine Mountains bordering the northwest, the Illurian Empire to the west and the sea coast bordering the rest. The only other metropolis in Valin is a port city called Rivlin, though the map would indicate several smaller towns throughout the land.

The Wild Wood covers a full 1/3 of the country, primarily to the west and north, and must be passed through in order to reach Illuria.

As far as other information about your destination, very little is available. Only merchants and their guards (and a few diplomats and representative of the Court) make the trip. The city you are heading for is called Bevaris according to the map.

Allyn turns to you (Kyara), looking away from the tumbled wagon.

"No. It should only take a few minutes if they can get the wagon lifted high enough. I'd hate to leave you behind, though I'd welcome a nice slab of venison that didn't come from my own wagons." he says with a smile. "Harl is good with the wheels. He's changed them enough times for me so it shouldn't be too long."

I've been given permission for a little bit of self-gratifying advertisement here so here it goes.

I'm a young author and publisher with my own publishing company (Silver Crescent Publishing). I've recently released my first eBook so I'm a bit excited. It's called Legends & Histories Volume 1. It talks about how to take a legend and turn it into an entire campaign, using a legend I wrote as an example.

It can be found at:
http://games.dungeonmastering.com/legends-and-histories
and hopefully my own marketplace soon (having problems getting the stupid thing working right).

If this one does well there will be 3 more in the series. Take a look, let me know what you think and if it interests you, by all means purchase it!

Alright, enough of that and back to the Roleplaying!
Good gaming to us all.

Topic: Realms of Twilight - A Journey Begins / Q&A
Subject: Answers to your questions

1) The website is www.realmsoftwilight.net (There is a legend, a forum and a blog associated with my website, all of which have some information available. And, of course, feel free to post on my forum any questions as well.

2) In the nation of Valin (and only this nation), werecreatures are all seen as blessed by Elvaril, and the embodiments of her will. The people, however, are not naive about the danger they pose and when one is discovered they are sent out to the druids until they learn some measure of control (among other things). Only then will they rejoin society. Also, lycanthropes answer to the laws of men just as others do (though many in the church of Elvaril argue against this). Some judgements do tend to go easier for their kind however. And as far as alignments, they are like anyone else. Some are good, some are evil... yet they are all shown respect/awe regardless until they prove otherwise.

3) Plants draw energy froom the sun on earth as they need such energy to survive. However, the sun is not the only source of such energy now is it? Some trees appear basically as upsidedown pine trees, gathering all of the moonlight they can. Others draw energy from thermal currents, elemental energies, lingering magic or any other number of sources, depending on where in the world you happen to be. In the case of the Wild Wood in Valin, the trees and undergrowth (though there are many areas completely devoid of undergrowth) tend to draw their energy from the thermal currents deep in the ground. after all, the Demonspine Mountains are nearby and they have always been explosively volcanic.

4) Character Roster
I'm not sure about this since some of the players may want to hide their abilities, but since I already mentioned the classes in the recruiting post... here they are:
Briana - Kyara'vallyn - Elven Ranger/Scout
Nomad D2 - Heironymus Nattvakt - cleric
Ion Kired - Virif Flametouch - Dwarven Warmage
rpayne - Raif Trilorn - Human Druid

5) There are 4 PCs hired as guards, and 3 other hired men-at-arms. The 3 NPCs are currently working on unloading the wagon wheel for the repair and working on the wagon.

In a world whose sun has not been seen for centuries and the passage of days is marked only by the cycls of the three moons; in a nation of men who worship a goddess of nature and rever werecreatures as holy and blessed beings, it is here that our story begins.

It is this day, early in the cycle with the white moon riding high and the silver just cresting the horizon that you leave Valin's capital city behind. It will likely be many days before you bed down in safety once again, for even the well-traveled roads are not without their dangers. Longer still will it likely be before you feel the soft, salty sea breeze upon your face. Yet your path is set before you, and half of your fee is paid.

(each of you get 50 gp, half of the negotiated price for your services)

It was a human merchant, bound for a city in the Illurian Empire to the west, that hired you on. "There is much gold to be made there." the man said, "but more and more caravans fail to return from the trip of late." Perhaps that is why he is paying so well for skilled guards.

The caravn you escort consists of four wagons. Two of them are covered tightly with oil cloth to protect the merchant's goods from the elements. The other two have a similar cloth covering a square framework, allowing enough room for a small man or perhaps an elf to stand within. Each of these wagons is pulled by a pair of draft horses.
The first of these wagons is steered by the marchant himself, Allyn by name. He is a man in his early thirties judging by his appearance, with a physique more akin to a soldier or farmer than the usual fat merchant. The other wagons are controlled by armed and armored guards, not unlike yourselves.
The last member of your party is the merchant's young daughter Kyla, a young maid that must be in her early twenties at most. She spends most of her time in the rear wagon, sketching the world as it passes and chatting with the guard guiding the wagon. In the single day since you left the city you have all noticed that the two of them are becoming ever more friendly, yet you were paid to guard the merchant's goods, not the virtue of his daughter.

Well into the second cycle of your journey a tremendous CRACK followed by the whiney of startled horses and the loud cursing of one of the guards.

"What happened?" Allyn shouts back from the lead wagon as he draws the column to a halt.

"The damned wheel broke sir!" The guard said as as he cursed under his breath.

"We've got spares in the second wagon Harl. Get it changed and do it quickly! We can't be late for our arrival or they may not let us in the gates!"

"Yes'sir." The guard, apparently Harl by name, grumbles.

The three drivers climb from their seats and begin to unpack one of the spare wagon wheels.

(Since no one in the group knows anyone else, I figured I would give you a chance to get to know each other, talk to the NPCs you are accompanying, etc. or take any other actions you see fit at this point)

I'm planning on getting the guidebook after christmas and going through it again with another starting character. Overall I thought it was absolutely AWESOME and look forward to anything even along the same lines that Bioware deems worthy... let alone a sequel.

You can still play if you want it. Sorry, I didn't see the posting here. Let me know if you're still interested. We currently have a dwarven warmage, a human druid, a gnome bard, and an elven ranger/scout.

If you are still interested, get the character stuff to me ASAP (either via pm or by email). The history stuff is what I'm most interested in as it is those that I have to modify and intertwine to work with the other characters and the campaign setting as a whole.

Again, sorry I missed your post.
