Topic: RDInnsider - The March Issue Is Here!
Subject: Post long past due

Alright so I missed a post that was talking to me. But better late than never right?

Kyle,
Forming a publishing company is easy. In my case I simply got a logo, some business cards and declared myself king of Silver Crescent Publishing. From there comes the tough/expensive part.

For RPG books you'll need to get a hold of a layout program (I recommend Adobe InDesign CS4) unless you plan to pay someone else to do it. There are also art costs to consider (finding good and cheap artists isn't all that easy, though I had some success on deviantart.com and ifreelance.com). There are printing costs to consider and you'll have to purchase ISBN numbers (the barcode on the back of the book) which are rather expensive considering they are just numbers.

If you're just looking at novels, it is a bit easier. The only art cost you have to consider is the cover. I'm not sure about layouts. Personally I would probably still set them up in InDesign, but then again I already have the program. You would still need an ISBN number and a printer, though the printing costs would be substantially less.

Any other questions I can take months to answer?

Subject: I'm pretty sure

As I understand it, there are dozens of games going on at any given time. Some just run by random people at the convention (even in hotel rooms at times) and others run as relatively formal events. Once I get all of my arrangements straightened out I may even be hosting an event myself within the campaign setting I've created.

Heironymus: Yes, you do have the wand, with 32 charges on it.

Briana: Low-light vision will only get you so far without having a light source. In this case about 20 feet from the entrance due to the already low light conditions and the cave entrance 20 feet up the slope.

And don't worry, out of character, you aren't the only enemies of the bandits within the cave.

I do have at least 2 interested players. I've already got a way to get them into the story when the time is right. I'm just waiting to organize character info for them. Hopefully you guys will be back to a more or less full group in a short while.

If the dwarf posts he can come with you. Until that point he is effectively becoming and NPC. I do agree that logically he wouldn't be the one left up top, but I'm trying to make it all work with only having 2 reliable posters at the moment. I'm also trying to recruit, so if you guys know anyone that may be interested please have them contact me.

Thanks,

Steelight Shadowborne
Redwyrm Rooftops
Monday night

There are some things that may occur in ones life that can make a person upset. Perhaps losing a valued item, forgetting ones lunch, or having to watch the excruciating death of a loved one. Steelight was well beyond upset. Fires burned in his soul that no amount of consolation or calming could quench. His rage at his defeat in the training yard was plain to see for anyone who cared to notive. Upon leaving the field he split off from the group. While his fury boiled within him, he was in control enough to realize that if he took it out on another student, he would no longer be welcome in the place he now called home.

He was not seen in the cafeteria that night, choosing instead to fast for the evening as penance for his failure on the field. His time was spent on the roof, the only place he knew of where he could find peace. Few people knew how to get up there, and even fewer had the physical ability to climb.

Hours passed, the sun long set below the horizon. The young monk performed kata after kata, practicing each form, strike and block until his muscles would no longer respond to his rage.

He preferred to spend his night under the moon when he could, a small act proving to himself that he was truly free. The professors didn't particularly care for this practice, since he spent the night away from his room, but tonight, it would be worth it. He had left a note on the chalkboard outside his room after all, so they would know where to find him if they needed to.

In quiet exhaustion, his rage finally played out, Steelight curled up on the roof tiles, among the many towers of the school and gazed up into the heavens. The moon is particularly beautiful tonight. And the stars shine brightly. I will not fail again tomorrow. Finding some small measure of comfort in these thoughts he drifted silently off to sleep.

He awoke with a start, blinded momentarily by the brightness of the risen sun. What time is it? After his vision cleared he looked up to see that the sun was well passed it's zenith in the sky. How many hours passed? 12? 16? One thing was certain, he had been gone for far too long. he would undeniably get an earful from professor O'leary about this one.

He gathered himself up and began to descend, climbing down slowly and carefully, until his foot slipped on the stonework, still slick from the morning dew, concealed from the rays of the sun by the shadows. The wind whistled passed his ears as he fell... and fell... and fell.

After a time confusion began to creep into Steelight's mind. The sun was no longer visible in the sky, and he slowly came to realize that the whistle of the wind had ceased long ago as well. What is going on? Where am I?

All at once, in a sudden and excruciating burst, visions began to fill his mind. Images blurred and passed too fast for his mind to latch on to them, but from time to time the sequence would slow long enough for him to decipher what he saw.

He was caged like the animal they seemed to think he was. He felt the pain of his master's whips punishing him for some imagined slight, and the blood oozing from the torn skin of his back. The tears tried to come, but he had long ago built a wall of hatred to keep them at bay. They would not see his weakness. Simmering hatred and boiling rage protected him here. In a blur the image vanished to be replaced several moments later by the next.

The sand of the arena floor covered his body. Every injury he had ever received fighting in the arena of the Maasters assailed his senses in a single moment of agony. The slicing blades of swods, tearing claws of beasts and the jaws of creatures whose names he would likely never know tore his flesh and rent his limbs. Here too his rage ptorected him. The pain was excruciating, but in only fed his fury. The fires burned within him, purifying his mind and hardening his soul.
It may take months, or even years. But I will have my vengeance. They will all feel the pain they have inflicted, if I have to die to make it so.A flash came and the image disappeared along with the building rage within.

Minutes passed, seeming like hours, but the stream of visions did not slow. He thought he should feel frustrated, but instead a strange, soothing feeling began to creep into his consciousness. It was a feeling that, even after several years he could not identify, nor call by name. The hate and rage within simmered low and slowly faded. It was not needed here.
Where am I? What is happening to me?

Slowly he opened his eyes as the sun broke the horizon. Was that all a dream? I wonder... After only a few moments of thought he pushed the dream aside to focus on the day before him. He felt strangely refreshed considing the physical exertion of the previous night, and now was not the time for memories and dreams. It was sunrise, and time to begin the morning routine.

Without giving it another thought Steelight began his morning forms and meditations.

Subject: Assuming you are entering the cave

Leaving the dwarf on the surface with Kyara's much-adored horse, you both slide quietly into the small opening, descending roughly 20 feet into the ground. It is very dark down here, as little of the moonlight above reaches behond the tunnel opening.

(Kyara's low-light vision does help her a little, Heironymus is pretty much in the dark.)

The tunnel continues forward beyond your range of vision, sloping slightly downward and curving just a bit away from the cliffside (you think). A quick scan of the ground also tells Kyara that this way has been traveled recently, though in the dim light it is hard to discern much more than that.

(All I need is for someone to light a torch and move down the passage and I will update again shortly thereafter.)

Subject: My complaint

Tann, my complaint was simply this, as an example.

For the bugbear to do what he did to me the following would have needed to occur.

1) He was knocked to his knees (effectively prone).
2) He would have needed to stand up (move action that provokes an attack of opportunity, a free atack by me).
3) He would have needed to successfully grapple me (A standard action that also provokes an attack of opportunity unless he had the Improved Grapple feat).
4) He would have to have a particular feat to throw me and, even assuming he had that feat doing so would also be a standard action.

Since you only receive 1 move action and 1 standard action per round, he couldn't have possible done all of these. I can point out flaws like this in the circumstance surrounding almost every character. Remember, not all of us were 1st level charactes.

I also wish to respectfully point out that we were organizing rather well considering we have never fought together before, but since we had all of 6 second (1 round) to act before we were all suddenly defeated there wasn't much opportunity to do anything, let along show teeamwork. And if you are going to teach, then teach. i say this again respectfully, but just saying "Teamwork next time" in a situation where we had no opportunity to form a team or really do much of anything isn't effective. It is frustrating to those familiar with the mechanics of the game and not very helpful to those trying to learn the mechanics or the whole posting thing in general.

As Meri said, we are all learning here, but I just wanted to post my thoughts. No offense intended if I conveyed them incorrectly (since you can't exactly tell tone through a post).

Subject: Also confused

Are we playing with rules or not? Technically a bugbear could not grapple and throw me in a single round. I would get an action int he new round to attempt to escape the grapple. Similar points could be brought up about every one of these situations surrounding each student.

So, I ask again, are we playing using the rule system, or just random posting with results preplanned and truly beyond our control in every sense? And if that is all of the "teaching" we get, perhaps I need to go back and change the amount of respect my character would have for our combat instructor.

I'm not using daggers. The Versatile Strike feat allows me to make my unarmed attacks bludgeoning, piercing or slashing. Knife Hand is a hand attack technique (unarmed) that would be considered a piercing attack. (same attack and damage rolls, just piercing instead of bludgeoning, that's the only difference.)

"Blades... helping them would help our guild and Lady Z. Shall we?" (He speaks loud enough for the soldiers in particular to hear him over the panic of the crowd.)

Rajikesh steps through the crowd to stand beside the guards. He levels a determined gaze at the oncoming figures and falls into a fighting stance, waiting (and hoping) for his guild mates to stand with him.

(I'm hoping that standing beside the guards will encourage them a bit. I stand defensive until one of the figures attempts to approach. When they get within 20' of me I step up and strike a single time at the creature, in the chest, with a +7 to hit. After that it will depend on if my hand is injured or affected by the strike. If the creature is injured I will continue attacking using flurry of blows (+6/+6).)

(Assuming the incident is now drawing some attention...)

Rajikesh starts making his way over to the area.

(making a spot check to see if any soldiers, guards or otherwise, are moving to assist the noble.)

Should any one move to assist the arrogant nobleman, he will do his best to deter them.

(via intimidation, and if that doesn't work, a well place trip attack... using my tumble skills to attempt to make it seem like a performance.)

Subject: Gen Con is AWESOME!

GenCon is the largest convention for RPGs, Sci-Fi, magic the gathering, etc. in the United States. It happens in Indianapolis, Indiana and is going on August 5th-8th this year. Go to www.gencon.com for details on it. If you plan on going, I would purchase your tickets and book your hotel rooms sooner rather than later. They have special rates for those with gencon tickets (which you can get to via the gen con website). They have games going 24 hours, and hundreds of booths dedicated to gaming (board games, video games, table-top RPGs, and general books) an author's corner and an entrepenuers section (which is where I will be). Basically it is the largest 4 days of gaming possible. Check it out. This year will be my first year going, so I hope I get some time away from my booth to explore a bit.

Rajikesh
City State of Bayris: Old Cove
Late Morning

The crowd cheered as a man stepped into the fighting circle. He was strong, by human standards and wielded a wicked looking dagger in one hand and a well-made whip in the other. The man had won numerous bouts over the past week in the shady arenas of the not-quite-lagal fighting circuit. Today was to be his next.

For a moment the whole attention was on the man as he shouted, raising and flexing his arms to show his strength. Adrenalin flowed through his veins just as confidence flowed through his head. Then his opponent stepped forward...

The man was almost seven feet tall and well built himself. He did not show the bulging biceps of the whip wielder, but was lither and agile despite his size. He stepped into the circle amidst a series of loud cheers and yells. Bets were laid and the ring master stepped in introducing the two opponents.

"Here we have Markus, a champion of the ring this week." The man said, pointing to the whip wielder. "And across from him stands Rajikesh, a man well known in our ranks for his refusal to use weapons or armor!" Cheers rose once again. "Final bets are called! Ready.... Fight!"

For a moment they circled, gauging each other, then the movement began. In a flash the large man was up close and personal, taking a glancing blow from the whip across his arm as he rushed in and landed a solid blow to the chest of Markus. The whip wielder was tough, however, and would not let a single blow fell him. With a spin he fell into a crouch, slashing across with his dagger. Rajikesh attempted to dodge to the side but was a split second too slow, earning a large slash across his left thigh. For a few seconds the opponents traded blows, fists and feet against leather and steel. It didn't take long for Markus to realize he was out matched. In a desperate move he lashed out with his whip, wraping it deftly around Rajikesh's large leg. A single, powerful yank sent the giskalo tumbling to the floor. The large man was much more numble than he seemed however. He placed both hands on the floor as he fell, swinging his legs with the momentum and sweeping the legs of the whip-wielder out from under him, sending Markus sprawling. With a snarl Rajikesh pounced, pummeling the face of his opponent in a series of blindingly fast strikes. Somehow Markus found the will to struggle. So strong was that will that he stabbed his dagger deep into the side of Rajikesh, leaving it embedded in his ribs. Momentarily weakend by pain the giskalo was thrown to the side. A quick recovery, more reflex than anything, put the big man on his feet once again, though pain still blurred his vision. He pulled the dagger from his side and tried to focus as his opponent regained his feet. Markus, thinking he had the advantage, tried once again to trip Rajikesh, but managed only to wrap himself up in his own whip. That moment of incompetence was his end. In a blur of movement, snarls and thunderous blows markus was left bleeding on the wooden deck, Rajikesh standing over him. Though he was bleeding quite profusely himself the adrenaline flowing through his veins kept him moving. He accepted the cheers of the crowd and the winner's purse stoically and quietly made his way back to the guild hall to recover. A splash was heard as they dropped the loser into the bay through a trap door in the floor of the piered structure.

City State of Bayris: Bazaar
Mid-Afternoon

Feeling much better after having the healing hands of the Tock repair his bleeding body, the celebration in the market called to him. He wandered the crowd for quite a while, searching for a particular set of items. Though not very adept at bargaining, seeing as his people had no use for it amongst themselves, he still managed to haggle out a decent price from a leather merchant for a pair of enchanted boots. As much as he argued however, he would have to stop by and pick them up after the Carnival. Apparently they didn't carry such boots in his size normally. His next purchase was a broad leather belt studded with 3 large opals, purchased from the same merchant. Perhaps it was a bulk discount that helped him get the deal he did. Lastly he picked up a small charm from a jewelry merchant. It was a chime made of pewter. He tied the leather thong that came with it around his ankle and continued on.

An hour later, after browsing several other interesting shops he made his way to a central plaza where it seemed a a group of mummers were performing. He paid particular attention to the acrobats. He analyzed them as they moved, noting how they remained balanced and thinking through the complex maneuvers in his mind, practicing them in his head for later use.

(As he is not particularly looking for other Blades members he would most likely not notice Cameron off to the side)

Dear Ogre,
Why is it that you never see a female ogre? Every adventure I've been on, every cave I conquered, and every humanoid tribe I've slaughtered I've only ever seen "Ogres" which are inevitably male.
