Topic: Whats a good way to start a graphic novel about magic?
Subject: Confidence? Me? Nah...

You see, I just know I'm the best already so I get my confidence from that knowledge.

Seriously though, I began not far from where you are now. Now I've started my own publishing company and published my first game book (The Realms of Twilight Campaign Setting, available for $40 + S&H at the end of the month). I have plans for a novel trilogy and various supplements in hopes that my book sells. if it doesn, well that sucks. But that just means I can try my hand at being a full-time novelist and lay off the game books for a bit (until I can generate more sales and interest in my world of course).

Like Eol said, we all have started somewhere. And besides, it's not the destination that counts, it's the journey right? I dreamed years ago that I would write a book about the world I created. I've learned alot, edited alot, spent alot and more but now I'm only 3-4 weeks from holding that dream in my hand. The knowledge I gained on the way allows me to work on many other projects as well as giving me insight into the gaming industry and good business and marketing practices in general.

Everyone can succeed, if they try hard enough. Don't let yur own confidence stop you. After all, generally speaking you are your own worst critic.

You arrive at the guild hall just before Selene sets on the horizon (night fall). The building itself seems more like a palace than a guild hall. Those that have not seen it before cannot help but be impressed by the sheer size of the place. The doors are currently open, but it seems like the place is winding down for the day.

The primary are in the guild hall that is open to outsiders is a large interior courtyard. The ground is a mosaic of tiles, though from so close it is difficult to determine what the image is of. Small bluebark trees and moonvines climb up white stone pillars supporting a balcony twenty feet above. Several wooden desks sit under the cover of the balcony, each manned by a single merchant, or their representative. as stated previously, many of them seem to be cleaning up for the day, gathering notes and contracts together for storage elsewhere.

You do not see the merchant that hired you. However there are five remaining manned stations (the men at 3 of them are almost finished packing up their belongngs) and several armed guards. The guards where scale mail and carry halberds with discipline and practiced ease.

A few moments after all of you are gathered the door to the room opens once again. A tall man clad in a leather vest and cloth breeches strides in. He gazes across the room, taking in each of you in an instant, then sneers as he throws a sealed envelope on the table.

Without a word he turns about and strides out of the room, slamming the door solidly behind him.

(Assuming one of you pick up and read the letter, written in Common

The letter reads as follows:
"Three days ago a shipment of mine was stolen from the caravan that was bringing it to Calatain. I have since discovered that my property did, in fact, find its way into the city. It is being kept in a warehouse on the northern outskirts, awaiting transport to North Harbor for shipping. You must reclaim my property before it sails, and preferably before it leaves the city. Bring the cargo to the warehouse marked on the accompanying map. Your payment will be sent to you via courier within twenty-four hours after my merchandise is safe in the named warehouse. Take note, the brand below is the same brand you will find marking my property."

Offer: 300 g.p.
Contact: None provided

The map shows a small warehouse in the merchant district of the city as well as the location of the warehouse where the clients merchandise is supposedly being kept. They are a little over 2 miles apart by streetway (as an estimate from what you know of the city). The brand is that of a triskele enclosed in a circle.

(If you don't know what a triskele is, do a google search and you should find it easily).

He turns back and continues towards the altar.

"And at least I'm not arrogant enough to think that we might be the last hope for the race. Bah!" He waves off the group and continues forward.

Hey, what do you guys think about standardizing the post subjects with your character names? I'll use "Game Update" just to keep things simpler and better organized (and so we have the image of who is saying/doing what).

Subject: Knowledge confirmed

The gnome that was not a gnome spoke again. "Watcher if you don't sleep would you please join me outside. I want to show you something that would intrigue you but you may only tell your protector about this."

With a light nod the Watcher finishes the thought in his tome and closes it. As he stands up from the table everyone else realizes the the book is no longer there. It didn't fade or poof it simply ceased to be on the table.

His strange eyes focused on the gnome as he strode forward. As the guardian moves to join him the Watcher motions him back to his seat. His assistance would not be necessary at the moment.

Without speaking a word he left the room behind the gnome, following him into the nearby forest. The events that took place there were secret, though strangely no surprise to a being trained to observe beyond the boundaries of conventional senses. As the dragon slept he spent the first few hours pacing around the creature, studying its every inch, and documenting his observations in his tome that, for some strange reason, had returned to existence at his call.

After those few hours the man known only as the Watcher found his way back to the inn, figuring a dragon of such ancient age had no need of someone to watch over her as she slept. He climbed up on top of the inn, watching the night sky with reverence until the coming of dawn.

Topic: Update on Dragon Mistress.
Subject: Tears of pain and sorrow

Bri,
Words are lost in sorrow, as the pain of our friend becomes our own. Tears are shed, rolling down as memories flood our minds. We will always remember her words and her courage, always. Few people in this world can say they will be remembered by almost 2,000 people, but Joanne will always be in our hearts.

Her pain has now ended, and ours has begun. She will be sorely missed by us all.

I believe I speak for all of us when I say that we all stand beside you and share in the tragedy of her passing.

With deepest love in this dark time, we will be with you always.

Prayers and positive energy will continue to flow for/to both of you, always.

Without so much as a glance towards the gnome the Watcher's hand lashes out, snatching the stone from the air. For a moment he stops his writing, holding the stone in front of his Watcher's eyes and gazing deep into its depths, and pondering the mysteries that await him there. A few seconds later he calmly sets the stone down next to his book and resumes his writing.

Subject: Entrance

The guard looks at you all suspiciously, but after a few more questions he lets you pass into the city.

Maruk is a city like many others. It's people live day to day in fear of criminals, but it is not by any means lawless. Patrols of 6 guards walk the streets frequently, and the main streets are lit by burning street lamps.

Th palace of the city is incredible, with four enormous blue-bark trees forming its towers and an outer wall that seems to be grown of solid wood rather than constructed. The gigantic leaves of the bluebarks form many of the roofs over both the towers and interior buildings.

Today seems to be a bit busier than usual with people pushing through the crows going this way and that, but nothing out of the ordinary in a city as large as Maruk. Now, you have to figure out where this merchant lives. When Kyara and Heironymus got the job it was through the merchant's guild, so you might try there. It was in the government district by the palace if memory serves. You could also likely assume he resides in the merchant district, so searching there would not be out of the question either. In the meantime, you are in a large city, with all of the amenities and dangers included.

(Congratulations, you've gotten in. Now you have to find the merchant and deliver the message.)

Argent is a sturdy dwarf, who wears loose pants and a snug sleeveless jacket which hangs open to show his muscled frame. He wears a strap around his torso, on which hangs a medium horn.
His tan skin betrays a resilience to heat, whether from the beating sun or the raving fires of the forge. While the hair on the back of his head is long, and dressed in a braid that reaches between his shoulder blades, his beard is short and worn in three small and thin braids, hanging from his chin. Gentle eyes stare out from under bushy brows, reflecting thoughtful anticipation, rather than a daring stare.

Physical Description: Skit is a 26 year old halfling, he stands 3' 2" and weighs about 36 lbs. He has sandy blonde hair and light gray eyes. He dresses with light layers over his armor. He keeps his blades hidden within these layers. He foregoes the common turban worn in these areas, but does wear a light scarf wrapped about his head. The scarf is a light blue color and matches the accents on his armor, clothes, and weapons. Not much more can really be said about his physical looks. He looks pretty normal with no real distinguishing features.

Personality: Skit is a little skittish about new people. Once he gets used to people though, he makes friends fairly easily and is pretty easy to get along with. He has a soft spot for women and will defend them honorably. He tends to follow the laws as much as possible but knows that sometimes he can bend them a bit. Not one to anger easily. Usually quiet but does like to talk when the conversation interest him.

There is actually more than one theives' guild, and the Blue Hand is nt any of them. They are a Mercenaries' Guild, though it is not unheard of for them to be contracted for rogue-like jobs every once in a while. For now, the Blue Hand isn't strong enough to rival any of the thieves' guilds so they are very careful what manner of theif related jobs they accept. And there are many other guilds outside of the theives' guilds as well. Yours is only one of many.

Only jobs accepted by the guild leadership are passed on to its members (such as the one you are currently waiting for.)

Physical Description: Echario, or Echo as he is sometimes known, stands just over 6 feet tall, his slender build is slightly muscled though still softer than the toned bodies of most adventurer types. His dark brown hair, which seems almost green in the right light, is long and straight, and even though he typically has it tied into a pony tail it always seems to be in his face one way or another. His eyes usually are a brilliant emerald shade of green, though at times seem to fade to a dull silvery gray, believed to be a side effect of his other-wordly heritage. His clothing is what some might call eccentric, but most of the seemingly out of place items tend to serve a purpose of some sort. His left arm, shoulder, torso, and neck are tattooed with entertwined vine patterns and arcane symbols, a design he made himself to reflect his heritage.

Personality: Loneliness can be a strong motivator, especially for one viewed typically as the bastard offspring of a short lived fling between two very different races, even though that was not the case with Echario or his parents. Like most of his kind Echo is extremely loyal to his friends, but at the same time is not stupid and keeps potential friends at arm's length just to avoid being stabbed in the back. This leads to a bit of a stand-offish appearance to others, but mostly it is paranoia and fear of being used, hurt, or mistreated. When his sorcerous abilities showed themselves this lead to yet another degree of seperation from "normal" society, but sparked a curiosity and wonderlust that was up until that point almost unseen in him. This curiosity still drives Echo on, sparked further by ambition and a desire to belong. Like most Fey-blooded he is highly emotional and prone to mood swings, he loves playing a good practical joke, but they are not always as harmless as he may think.

Topic: Winds and Sand Q&A
Subject: Another point

I also want to point out that though everyone that has turned in a sheet to me has chosen to be chaotic, there are certain limits to what the guild will accept in that respect. You are expected to uphold any contracts you take and either complete them or report the failure. You are expected to conduct yourself with relative professionalism when on a job for the Blue Hand. While the guild itself may not be Lawful exactly, they do have their rules. If you violate those rules you risk reprisal from within the guild, or even expulsion.

Also, bear in mind that EVERY action you take has consequences in my game. Some good, some bad. But don't expect to randomly knock over a noble or rob a beggar and never hear about it again.

One last warning. There tend to be numerous plot lines going on simultaneously in my games. Some of them you will see, some of them you will not. You will interact with all of them at one point or another whether you realize it or not, and your actions will affect the direction that particular plot line (and anything tied to it) takes.

Again, take care with the whole chaotic thing. I wouldn't want to have to kill a character for being too chaotic for his own good, despite alignment. But I will not hesitate to do so if laws are broken (either the city's or the guilds) or other such things and they are caught.

Shield Wolf brought up a good point. Equipment available in Sandstorm published by Wizards of the Coast IS available for purchase, either before the game begins or as long as you are in Calatain (for the most part).

Good gaming!
