Subject: Who?

If it is the Illurian Deity of trickery and deception you meant then his name is Elarii.

I intend to let anyone else comment on this conversation prior to the enthroned elf doing whatever it is he is going to do. I will make an official update either Sunay some time or after the little conversation among players comes to an end.

Subject: Me? Nah...

"It was not my men who attacked that pittance of a trade mission. Oh, are you refering to the tracks you followed? Many, less than reputable groups know the location of my lair. While I do not take part in thefts such as this, I see no reason to let a bargain or an opportuity pass by. My gold is worth as much as anyone's after all, and..." he looks down at the woman in chains. "she such am obediant pet."

"Perhaps I might offer a solution to your obvious conundrum. Since you seem so good at carrying out orders, perhaps you can deliver a message for me. I have bought the girl, and I have no intention of allowing her to leave unless I can make a profit from her sale. Feel free to deliver this message to the caravan master, which I would imagine, is her father. Unless of course you have the gold in your pockets to cover her purchasing price, but by the looks of you I doubt it."

"For now you are beginning to bore me. I have set my terms. You have by now doubtlessly realized that there is no way you can tek her from me by force. Even if all of my guards were illusions and all four of you attacked perfectly you could not survive to claim the girl. Nor would she be alive to be claimed. So you have come to a choice. You can deliver the message I have given you, or you can attempt the way of valor and honor. I must warn you though, I have little patience for valor or ill-conceived attempts on my life."

He yawns loudly, letting the chain slacken just a bit before tightening his grip again. "And as for the two of you." he says looking at the manacled elf and the rogue. "Feel free to join them. I have shown you the truth of the trade dispute. It seems Valin is not able to protect their own trade ways. And since the brigands have been identified as soldiers of one of the Illurian noble houses, I dare say the citizens and nobility of the nation will be outraged. The path to war is obvious is it not? I will allow you to choose this time. You can choose to go with them, or return to House I'sorin and explain to them that someone in Illuria is attempting to start a war. Whatever path any of you choose, I believe you should be on your way lest my patience expire. If you wish to stop this war, I wish you luck, and a fond farewell. You have been so very entertaining."

As one all of the guards not near either group begin to march forward towards the end of the throne room you all occupy. The pair of guards behind Ele and Airion shift into a threatening posture with halberds at the ready. One motions for them to join the others at the back fo the throne room.

Meanwhile, the enthroned elf pulls harshly on Jocelyn's chain, dragging her towards him with one quick jerk until she is basically sitting in his lap. A cruel smile spreads across his features as he looks up at the party and awaits their choice.

There are 12 guards in the room, outfitted in black chain shirts and each armed with both a halberd and a longsword. They have black hoods that come up over their faces such that only shadows can be seen of their head and facial features. Two guards are positioned at each door (save the one Kyara and Heironymus entered through which is unguarded).

Physically, Kyara and Heironymus are about 30 feet from the throne (in a room that is approximately 40' long by 30 feet wide). They came in through the main door at one end of the long room. The other two are ten feet closer to the throne, having come in through one of the side doors.

Subject: Deception or truth?

"Of course you had nothing to do with the caravan raids. After all, you were comfortably housed in these tunnels at the time. But is House I'sorin not your employer? Hmm. Then perhaps I have misjudged your mission. And here I mistook you for mercenaries hired to start a war. You have my apologies of course."

Airion speks once again. "Do you really expect me to believe that these people came after this girl if they were paid to let the caravan get raided? Of course some of the things you say could make sense. However perhaps I should hold them suspect for something since you seem to know the cleric's name. Then again you could just have a very reliable and extensive spy network. What house to you hail from? I see no house insignia on you our your soldiers. I wish to know with whom I may be speaking."

The elf smiles a bit. "It is good that you begin to see the truth Airion. As far as what I expect you to believe, half-blood, I expect you to discover the truth for yourself. It is completely possible that events transpired as you describe. Let us pretend for a moment that they were indeed hired to allow the raid to happen, but put up a valiant effort. They did so, and their contract ended at that moment. If another opportunity presented itself... saving the girl perhaps? Then they would be under no obligation to refuse such an opportunity to further line their pockets. That is not completely out of the realm of possibility is it?"

He turns his attention once more to the cleric and the scout. "He did offer to pay you to retrieve her did he not?"

Subject: Assumptions

"You have, of course, come to the only logical conclusion Heironymus. However, your conclusion is only logical if you assume that it was my men who took part in the raid. Look arond you young cleric. Do these disciplined soldiers seem the type to take part in a simple caravan raid? No. They have much more pressing matters to attend to. Might I suggest you look elsewhere for the source of the theft?" The Valshari motions to the two newcomers. "Perhaps one of them might know." He turns his attention to the side, towards the two who have not yet spoken. "Well? Perhaps you can shed some perverbial light on the subject? You are from the very empire that raided the caravan, are you not?"

Subject: Brave Words

"Those are brave words indeed my dear. It was not I who failed to protect a caravan. Nor was it I who lost my employer's most precious possession. I simply stand to profit from your failures. If you want the girl back, feel free to purchase her. She is bought and paid for, so to simply take her would be theft would it not? My guards will not likely take kindly to theft." His voice gets a bit more menacing. "Nor will I."

Subject: Conversation

"Do you not realize that your failure to protect that which you were paid to has further widened the rift between your nation and the Illurian Empire? Every caravan that does not make the trip, every unsuccessful endeavor only leads to heighten the suspicions of both sides. I'm sure you are aware that the trade relations are already strained. So what effects, I wonder, will the sabotage of the latest caravan of valuable goods have on that relationship? Thee is one thing I am curious about. How much were you paid to let the caravan fall, and the raid of the brigands succeed?"

Your observations of the guards do not seem to go unnoticed by the elf on the throne, though by his smile you judge that he is supremely confident (Sense Motive check: 16). There are 12 guards in the room, all of which seem as solid as you are. Either they are not illusions, or they are very well performed illusions, beyond your perceptive abilities to penetrate. The two new comers also seem solid enough to be real.

The flare goes off int he face of one of the creatures threatening Sintan. For the moment it seems to have no more effect than making it blink a few times before menacingly raising his spear once more.

The kobolds near the man take a moment to revel in his fear and then thrust their spears at his torso. Despite his wounds he manages to roll to the side, causing one of the assuredly mortal strikes to only graze his side, and the other to miss entirely. Luck was with him.

As the kobolds close in for the kill on the wolf she barks fiercely, and in a last surge of strength tears the throat out from one of them. Meanwhile another, the one who seems to be blinking an awful lot, manages to barely miss stabbing his own tail before losing his balance and falling to his backside. Those that remain look about at their fallen comrades and turn to flee into the woods. In a fury of blades Darkon cuts down one more, the other just barely managing to escape beyond his reach.

The two kobolds frustratingly trying to slay the downed merchant leap high into the air in surprise as a large badger, with a soft glow appears between them and the man, ferociously clawing one of them, tearing a series of slash marks in his stomach, just has he is blasted through the air by a bolt of raw magical energy from behind. His body lands broken atop the wounded merchant.

The end of the kobolds is nigh. Their foes now seem to outnumber them, and more are appearing every minute. They are in a full rout, fleeing for their lives and taking only what they had already stolen with them in their panicked flight.

(Unless any of you choose to do something to the fleeing kobolds I will continue. If so, feel free to post that alongside your new post).

The wagon remains, filled with bolts of expensive cloth, some torn to shreds by the claws of the scaled creatures you have frightened away. On the ground lays the man, moaning in pain. A deep spear wound can be seen in his stomach and another good-sized gouge at his ribs on the left side. There is still no sign of your would-be instructor, which seems more than a little odd considering the circumstances.

Sintan whines a bit, and limps slowly over to her goblin companion, her once soft coat matted with the blood of her wounds.

(next update will be next Sunday. Feel free to ask any clarifying questions you need to in the Q&A thread.)

The door is not locked and opens without any hesitation or resistance. Seeing only darkness beyond you both rush through the door, slamming it closed behind you.

Heironymus feels several pushes at the door, but manages to hold them at bay long enough to slid the door bar into place. Only then do you notice the darkness fading, as light begins to shine from some unknown source.

You find yourselves in a large and rather ornate room. About 30 feet ahead of you sits a dark-skinned elf on a throne of carved ebony, resting on a raised dais. In his hand he holds a black chain. Hesitantly your eyes follow the chain to the person at the other end. Jocelyn sits several steps below the elf with a choker around her neck, connected to the chain.

The ceiling rises into darkness, though you get the feeling that you are being watched by many pairs of eyes from its depths.

There are several other doors into the room, and at each of them stand a pair of guards clad in leather armor, short bladed weapons in hand.

"Greetings my friends." says the valshari on the throne. "I wondered how long it would take you to get here. I must admit, I had begun to wonder if you would make it here at all. I do hope my illusions didn't frighten you too greatly."

He pauses for a moment, allowing his last statement to settle in.

"I wonder what you hope to accomplish here. As you can see my new pet is quite happy. Smile for them dear."

Jocelyn shows a very hesitant smile, revealing two missing teeth and a previously unnoticed bruise on her jaw.

"I have some other friends I would like you to meet. I believe they will be here shortly. In fact, they have been sent specifically to sabotage Valin's trade ways. The very sabotage you were commissioned to prevent I believe."

A door to the right side of the room suddenly bursts open, barely missing one of the guards who, strangely, seemed to purposely be standing a bit further from the door than the other door guards in the room. Another pair of dark-sinned humanoids burst through the door, squinting momentarily at the sudden bright light. In there daze the guard silently closes the door behind them.

"And here they are now, our guests from the empire." He turns to the new entrants. "Welcome to my humble abode. I do hope you were not treated unfairly."

After a moments pause he motions to Kyara and Heironymus and speaks again. "Here are the people you sought, as I promised. They are the cause of all of this chaos. If they had simply guarded the caravan as they were paid to do we wouldn't all be in this situation. Instead they gave a wagon of goods and this precious girl over to my possession, at a wondrous price I might add. The merchant was ashamed and turned back towards home. It is a shame really. His goods would have been highly desired in your home city of Bevaris I'm sure."

(The new entrants are the characters of Dakarta and Dragon Mistress. Feel free to describe yourselves in this thread, as well as any actions you choose to take or words you choose to speak. Though I do ask that you not all speak at once. After all, the elf can only address one at a time anyway.)

Subject: The Watcher's Return

Several minutes passed before the Watcher reappeared in the stairway. With a gaze that seemed to penetrate into the very soul of every patron he looked out over the tavern. Without a word to anyone he strode slowly but purposefully over to an empty table near the bar. With a nod to the Guardian he sat.

Already his bald head was sweating from the heat of the many gathered humanoids, and though he had changed from his travelling clothing to a light gray, full-sleeved shirt and loose cotton breeches, he was still warm in such a closed environment. Quietly he sat.

Within moments he was writting in a large tome. He didn't seem to be carrying the book when he entered the tavern area, but perhaps the eyes have deceived.

The Watcher looks around again, with a certain serenity in his expression, taking in the whole of the room before returning his gaze to the book. A moment later his quill is a blur over the pages as he begins to write.

I've got it downloaded already. I like it a lot. Especially the Realms of Twilight game summary By the way, since I'm allowed to mention this every so often (shameless self-promotion moment... beware) My Realms of Twilight Campaign Setting hardcover book is coming out shortly. It will be sent to the printer in the next few days and in 4-6 short weeks, I'll have 50 copies in hand to sell should anyone want one!

Okay, no more self-promotion. Good job overall on the Innsider Meri. Well done.

The summoned wolf lets lose a loud howl and then slowly fades from existence, returning to its home forest, wherever that may be, and leaving behind several confused kobolds.

Sintan lets loose a similar howl in response and pounces at the nearest kobold, barely missing its arm as it quickly jumps away, a little intimidated by the wolf's sharp, pointy teeth.

The kobolds rouse themselves gathering their courage to fight against the seemingly lone wolf. Two more spear thrusts strike home as Sintan struggles to avoid the many points. Blood is now streaming freely from several wounds (the two hits inflicted 2 and 3 hit points of damage. Sintan has now taken 7 hp damage and has 1 remaining. he is noticeably limping and weakening.)

Two of the other kobolds (those previously threatening the summoned wolf) move to surround Sintan, the remaining two of that group move menacingly toward the downed merchant. The two already there have now finished gathering his coin and picked up their spears.

The twang of a bow string from off to the side signals Kiirnon's second attack. The arrow grazes the wounded kobold deeply enough to bring him down. Recognizing the new threat several of the kobolds attacking Sintan turn to the woods, searching for the archer.

Their attention diverted Darkon sees his opportunity. He charges in, swirling his scimitars at a pair of kobolds threatening his canine ally. The first strike slices the head off of the scaly creature. its body stands there for a minute before realizing it's dead and collapsing to the ground. The clean cut put Darkon off balance however. When the second kobold raised a perfect block to his second scimitar block he almost lost the blade entirely. Luckily he managed to spin it around his hand (looking almost like he did it on purpose) and catch it back in his hand, gripping it normally.

The halfling wizardess begins her chanting and dance of summoning. (Any summon monster spell has a 1 full round casting time. It will take effect on your next turn.)

8 kobolds now remain, though they have now recognized that they do not outnumber their foes as much as they previously believed.

(Zeph Sense Motive check 16) The kobolds seem to be quickly growing afraid, their morale quickly fading as their allies die beside them.

While the Guardian does not quite have the hulking physique your character seems to imagine, the sour/suspicious disposition is likely right on the mark. Though another player will be picking up the Guardian shortly so I will leave it to him to fully describe himself (more than I already have that is).

Based on posting history, I will only update the game on Saturdays, not at any specific time that day, just Saturdays.

Also, if characters attempt to perform actions that they simply are not capable of, I will attempt to explain why they cannot do such a thing (which should be rare since I let people do whatever they can think of within the bounds of their character's skills and abilities) and provide an opportunity for them to change their post. Should that fail a random action will be decided by me, and the results will more than likely not be in the character's favor.

If there are any questions or concerns about this announcement, don't hesitate to either PM me or post here. I'm simply trying to keep balance between the players and make sure everyone has fun (as long as they are posting!)

Keep in mind that you are training, and I expect you to try to push the envelope a bit, but don't be surprised when the rules stand firm.

Good gaming to you all, and I look forward to seeing you defeat the kobolds before you.

You move as quickly as you dare down the hall away from the sounds that now seem to be only instants behind you. Though you cannot see them, you can feel danger right at your back.

Then, as you turn a corner in the darkness you smack into a wooden object. After a moment of running your hands across the object it seems you have found an iron bound wodden door, much like the first door you encountered in these tunnels, save that this one actually has a handle! A quick glance behind you shows several pairs of eyes, glowing in the darkness with more arriving every moment. In only a few moment you count more than a dozen, and they are quickly approaching.

Subject: On the Third day

A third day passed as the Watcher and his Guardian searched for the sight of his vision, but to no avail. They would need supplies soon, and they had seen the chimney smoke of a large building in the distance. Perhaps an inn or tavern of some sort?

As the moon rose in the evening they opened the door to the Thirsty Turtle inn. The room was lively as any crossroads place would be this time of the evening. With one last look over his shoulder at the beauty of the risen moon and the constellations of the dragon and the Eye of the Watchers detailed by the celestial stars he stepped in. Without a word to anyone they approached the innkeeper. The Watcher said nothing, only pulled a few coins from a pouch hidden somewhere in his traveling clothes to pay the man. The dark clad (and well-armed) human seemed to speak in his stead.

With only a head nod the traveling Watcher ascended the stairs, presumable headed to his room. The other remained in the common room... for the time being.

Summon Monster I cannot summon a hell hound. Per the 3.5E Player's Handbook and considering your alignment you can summon the following:

Celestial Badger
Celestial Monkey
Fiendish Hawk
Small Fiendish Monstrous Spider
Fiendish Viper
Celestial Giant Fire Beetle

A hell hound cannot be summoned until Summon Monster III which is a 3rd level spell, not castable by a wizard until 5th level.

He is a 2nd level character, but he is not a 2nd level druid. Spells effects and durations are based on the caster level (thus his druid level of 1) not character level (which would be 2 in this case).
