Subject: Fractured Shards: Game Thread

Two years ago, the great war had ended leaving Khorvaire in an uneasy peace between the twelve nations that arose to power through out the fighting. All the nations are now recovering from the one hundred year conflict; rebuilding armies, economies, and exploring the new land that they were given through the treaty of thronehold. Breland, the strongest out of them all, is reeling from a weakened military and now is relying on mercenaries for a part of their army. Many people try to sell their sword arm to anyone who is looking to hire, but three specific people have risen to power and now control the three most powerful companies of mercs through out Breland. These folks are Havundar Bhelthas, Captain Busnick, and Lady Palpaline, which all control the Golden crown, Busnicks Brawlers, and The Bleeding Hearts, respectfully. The Breland military hires from these three mostly as evenly as possible, not wanting one to monopolize the entire industry in such a sensitive time for everyone.

Even though the war is over, by no means is the fighting ever going to stop. Skirmishes between border patrols and monsters pouring in from Droaam will always happen, and pirates in the hilt threaten peace from within Brelands own borders. But that is how it always is, war and peace never really being as black and white as everyone always wants it to be. But this world is where many people have to live, including our heros, who unbeknownst to them will be starting the adventure of a life time quite soon. Right now though, they all are settled in at First Tower, the small thorpe just outside of Sharn relieving them from sleeping on the cold hard ground at night, and the weary travels that the hot summer days always bring.

Breland, First Tower, "The Tower Inn"

The thorpe of First Tower only has a few commodities with it, those being one general store, one stable for horses, the lightning rail station, the checkpoint to enter Sharn, and of course the famous Inn which is built around the infamous tower, "The Tower Inn." On this humid summer day at high noon, we find our five heros taking refuge within the walls of "The Tower Inn", relaxing and waiting for the cooler part of the day to come around. Most of the sixty or so people who live here are also here doing the same thing, so today it is a bit crowded. But for Ailinel, the barkeep and store owner of "The Tower Inn", it's just another day as usual. The murmur of chat and laughing and singing can be heard, as a good time is had by all in this inn. Smells of pipe weed, fresh baked bread and meats of all kinds permeate the air as lunch is just beginning to be served, and the waitresses weave in and out of the twenty or so round tables set up in the large square room. On the northern side, a bar is set up, with twelve bar stools, and of course Ailinel behind it serving everyone their favorite cool drinks. To the left is a staircase leading upstairs to the eight or so rooms that are always for rent, and also presumably always full as travelers frequent this inn day in and day out. Behind the bar is the kitchen, which only give way to quick glances as the doors open and shut behind the waitresses and cooks, and on the right is the Tower itself, partially sticking into the room going from floor to ceiling. The inn was built around the tower, and on the towers sides are shelves that hold presumable artifacts from the historic creation of First Tower.

Sitting at a table next to the tower itself sat two men, both who were sipping on an ale and observing the Inn and its inhabitants. One of them was a dashingly dressed man with a quarter staff resting on the table. The staff was a beautiful wood reinforced with the finest of metals, and he wore a wide brimmed hat which held a feather, and tall riding boots. His perfectly manicured mustache and goatee gave him the looks of a dashing swordsmen, but no blade could be spotted on him. Next to him sat another fellow, who did have a fine looking rapier hanging from his side. His hair was almost to his ear, and was slightly curly at the tips. His green eyes darted the room as he looked at the gathering crowd, but he also got a few looks as every once in a while his mithril armour would be revealed through his shirt, its shine catching the eye of more then one patron.

Sitting at the bar, but sipping a tall glass of milk was a very young boy, about the age of fourteen or so. He was slightly out of place because he was there alone, and not accompanied by a parent like every other child is. Ailinel didn't care though, his bar was open to all, and as long as they have the money, they have his welcome.

Outside the inn, basking in the heat of the day was a very peculiar person who's skin was brown and hair was green. He slept leaning up against the back of the inn, enjoying the feel of the grass and the shade that the trees and the inn and the tower gave him. he caught a few glances here and there but his kind was nothing that wasnt seen before, and so he slept soundly knowing that he was safe and sound.

Sitting next to the little boy at the bar stool was a man who had came down just few hours earlier from renting a room. He was darkly tanned and had brown hair, and very dark eyes. He sat, and even though he had no armour or weapons on him, he gave off the feel and look of a great fighter, someone who has seen combat time and time again. The only weapon he sported was a mace, which he kept with him just incase something happened, but in this in it was slightly foolish to go around fully armoured and armed, as it was such a peaceful place.

After a while of eating, drinking, and just pure merriment, a man walked into the inn and sat at a lower left hand table, but soon stood, and even started to climb onto the table. The man was clad in studded leather, and a short sword hung from his belt while a shield was strapped to his back. Everyone turned to look at him while he climbed, and caught the attention of everyone else as he started talking out loud.

" Men and women of First Tower, I have come here to ask for your help! There is a menace in the west, and it needs to be stopped! Monsters, goblins, and orcs of all kinds are starting to pour through the hills over from Droaam, and the Brelish military is at its breaking point! We soldiers from The Bleeding Hearts Mercenary company are beginning to gather together, and tomorrow morning we will head out to relieve the Brelish military of the attacks that they are constantly striving to fight back! But we are undermanned, and need you, worthy adventurers to sign up and help! Get payed to fight along side with us, and see the Brelish military in action as we help save them again! Those monsters have resorted to burning down swathes of the mountain forests, to clear a path around us, and if we dont get there in time, they will swarm over the entire border, so sign up now!"

He sits back down, and takes out a pen and paper, as people start to talk amongst themselves about what had just happened. Ailinel just nods silently to himself, and goes back to work serving drinks. Men and women alike already are starting to stand up and sign the paper, money being the first thing on their minds. Amids the crowd of people, five individuals contemplate the thought, and decide on what they would do next.

you can only use multiple action dice at higher level, and even then you only take the highest roll.

Subject: Ah yes,

action points. Each player gets 7 of them, you can only use one a turn on a d20 roll, you have to declare it before you roll, which will be easy because you just say it along with your post. All they are basically is points to add to your rolls, kind of like your "luck". They dont replenish until you level up, so use them carefully.

Background:
Born in First Tower to his mother and farther unsurprisingly, unfortunately he was orphaned at a very young age and grew up in Sharn calling Captain Hein farther. Captain Hein was the old captain of the Sharn City Watch so Damocles’ upbringing was far from meagre but again neither was it privileged as the captains job kept him working hard and late, it wasn’t too long after Damocles’ 17th birthday that he enrolled in the Watch’s academy/training program out of respect for his ‘farther’ and his job. He wanted to give back to the city that had taken him in just over 14 years ago.
After completing his training he was put on the watch in the less dangerous areas, the more sparsely populated parts of the upper towers, and the City Watch cried favouritism. He was transferred to a different watch tower towards the base of the city and he had to work his way up, quite literally. Over the next 4 years he rose from rank to rank rising thorough constable to become sergeant, by this time he could have taken his ‘father’s’ job as Captain but he retired a year earlier and the new captain held a grudge against Damocles. As soon as Damocles became a threat to the new captains position an enquiry was held, having helped in and lead many raids helped in the defence of the city he had much support but once the result came it screamed rigged. His scrutinisers had been hand picked by the captain to be people who Damocles’ ‘father’ had stepped on to get to the top or people that had been the first to call favouritism over 4 years ago. Not wishing to be disgraced by demotion he left the city Watch, many people threatened to follow unless some arrangement could be made but once you left the Watch you could not return. An agreement was made and Damocles, the to disgust of the captain, is still allowed the right to wear the Symbol of the Sharn City Watch and to bear arms in the city. The agreement was that he works on contract as a personal guard for persons who can afford it, a much cheaper alternative then employing him full time. This agreement is a bonus to the captain actually as it means he doesn’t have to spend resources in the, so dubbed, trouble areas. All this saved gold, none knows where it ends up but the most likely explanation is in the captain’s private coffers.
Regardless of the symbol he carries he’s still required to hold identification papers with a portrait, although most sergeants and constables know who he is, they still announce his allegiance to the Sharn City Watch and right to bear arms. Not that his weapon could kill unless he specifically wanted to, his armour and sword were both possessions of the old captain, his adopted farther. The studded leather, the work of a master craftsman was returned to his shop so that he could refit it for Damocles and Damocles put every hour of his spare time into mastering the rapier. The rapier, it’s self a masterwork of forging being thinner and longer then any normal rapier ever should be, was imbued with magic upon it’s forging with a keener edge then any mundane sword and it’s steel was blessed so that could not kill unless it’s wielder wished it to.
Even though the war has ended and Breland is at peace these are dark days, stories of living iron giants rising from the depth of the city and Morgrave University sending many a group to their death in the Xen’drik. It is feared that the City of Towers isn’t the shining beacon it should be and nameless horrors are reported to be crossing the eastern border of Breland, caravans are attacked around the edge of the Kings Forest and pirates stalk the waters of The Hilt. With the death of his farther earlier in the year maybe it’s time to leave the city, he’s served the city best he can but now adventure beckons, he’s been gathering supplies he might need for a short wile.

Eleak is a man shrouded in mystery. He left the order of Druids in the area of Woodhelm, claiming them to be too passive. Men had targeted the forest, and were treating it disrespectfully, and yet all the others did was simply talk to them, asking them to stop. But they never did. Words fell silent on men wishing to disrespect nature. So Eleak took it upon himself to cloak himself in mystery, and be Nature's warrior, targeting all who disrespected Nature in it's purest form. The world was changing. But nobody was going to eliminate Nature from the new world.

Eleak's travels brought him to the forest surrounding the area of Sharn. He had heard that they someone had intended to be cutting down the forest to make room for an expansion near the first tower. Well... they had no idea what was coming. Because the predator would not be tamed. Nature would survive.

Apperance:

of average build, Beau looks like he would blend in, if not for the blue eyes glowing out from underneath his long black bangs

Background:

Beau was born to Joe Smith and Marie Lian. Marie was originally from a low noble family, but she had run away under the illusion of true love. Joe was a blacksmith, mostly working on horseshoes and fixing the odd item now and again. Marie got pregnant very soon after they were married in secret. She gave birth to a baby boy. Joe wanted his child to have a more meaningful profession than he, and named him "Bow" in the hopes of guiding him to it. Marie agreed to the name, with a less obvious spelling, but never quite got over the idea that her child would not be nobility. Beau was born ill, because Marie had not been taking care of her health. Six months later she killed herself. Life without luxury had taken its toll.
Beau demonstrated an aptitude for magic from the day he could talk. His first word was "arcana". Or, as his father liked to recite "are you momma?" His father had been saving for an apprenticeship, and had worked out a deal with the local bowyer even before Beau was born. When Beau showed skill with magic, the bowyer refused to return the pre-payment. Joe was unable to convince him to teach the boy anyway, and was swindled out of the money.
It was, of course, an absolute shock to Joe when, a few weeks later, a man came into his home uninvited and without announcing himself. Being a blacksmith, he had not heard the man come in (loud hammering = no hearing), and found him playing with Beau in the bedroom. He struck him in the head with his hammer and was completely dumbfounded when the man did not react at all to the blow.
The man introduced himself as Maristonali Carpestal, a mage who was passing through town. The two men sat and talked for hours that evening about seemingly nothing. Maristonali asked detailed questions about Joe's work, including how many horseshoe's he'd had to refit that day, how many years he'd been a blacksmith, and test-like questions about things like "how to make a hammer without a hammer". Joe was absolutely floored when the man offered to teach Beau at no charge. It was, seemingly, completely unrelated to the current conversation. He suspected another swindle, but the mage gave detailed information about where Beau would be taught and told him "When the hammer sings, the water sings back." something that would seem obscure to anyone who had never forged a blade, and obscure to anyone who did not know the meaning of the word "riddle". It was clear to Joe that the man was sincere in his offer.
Beau grew up under Maristonali's care. The man was very harsh and direct. He would teach Beau magic, all the while saying how mages were "all a bunch of panzies". Maristonali was a mage, but he prefered a rougher life than most mages and explained that it was important to be able to live without the spells, making you a more formidable friend and foe when you revealed you could cast. The man explained that he would much prefer him to learn how to wield a blade, but that his skill with crafting was too great to set aside. Maristonali taught him the basics of how to make everything he needed for himself, and then taught him how to make the equipment to make him a formidable fighter. His apprenticeship involved so much hard work, that Beau took to sleeping on the floor in order to avoid suffocating in his sleep, lacking the energy to lift himself out of bed if he sank into it, or rolled onto his stomach in his sleep. He was sore every day of his lessons, but he was taught one thing above all others. "Anyone can fight. Most can cast. Few can fight and cast."
Late in his apprenticeship, as Beau approached 12 years old, when his lessons were to end, Maristonali had taken to sending the boy "camping" with nothing but a knife to survive. Beau had to find food, create his own shelter, and use the skins from the animals to clothe himself (yeah, no clothes either). This was so difficult, that one particularly cold winter, he spent time creating a poor spellbook (2 pages actually were able to hold spells) for himself from the skins and leathers in order to cast spells to keep himself alive. Maristonali looked down upon this and he was severely punished, forced to craft 10 blades before he could sleep.
After his apprenticeship ended, Beau went to visit his father to find he had died. The man had lost his purpose with his son and wife gone, and withered away. He went back to the only place he knew and spent time crafting items for Maristonali and selling them. It was menial labor and he hated it. Two years later, Maristonali, very old, went on his winter camping expedition and never came back. Beau did not search for him. He had been told simply to assume he was dead if that ever happened. The shop was his, but he didn't want it. He crafted himself a custom backpack to carry his spell-related gear with what was laying around, and he sold the shop at an absurd markup to a local mage. He gave the money to a street urchin, keeping only a small bit of copper for himself and took off to see something more interesting than the inside of a shop. He had no purpose, but he wanted to find one. He thought maybe some day he would get a family, and they would all travel around together and see the world.

He walks with the air or bearing of a battle forged soldier and with a well developed sense of danger. HE is stealthy and he rends to lurks in the backgrounds while his companions reap glory hoping it won't be too long before he sees battle one again.

Background:
Searos grew up in Ringbriar, his father a marshal in the army, his mother a kind woman, who hated the site of his father strapping on armor every time the king called. She feared he might not return.

When Searos was 15 his father took him into the army to fight against the goblins that had been pillaging in their lands and in the neighboring kingdoms. Only a short time into the war and Searos had already proven his might with a blade. His father came to him telling him that he wanted him to lead a faction of troops into battle. Excepting with great glee he knew not what laid in wait for him and his father. They marched past Shadowlock Keep to the Graywall Mountians and straight into battle.

Three fortnights passed and just as the hour of victory felt upon them there was loud clash. Looking to the right Searos cried out in horror. The goblins managed to flank them devastating the armies numbers. Among the falling he saw his father. Goblin arrows were small but many but numbers add up. Even with manyarrows hits he ws still fighting though on his knee unable to stand. THe goblins bashed and howled at him in feverish torment. He rushed to his fathers aide killing all who stood in his path. But alas, he was too late, one goblin landing a mighty blow to his fathers helm with his mace. Crushing it in and causing his father to crumple over and over. When Searos got to him his body was jerking wildly until those faded and with it his father's life.

With his death Searos stood and with a mighty cry and all his strength he swung his sword in great sweeps about him him. Slicing fack a forth like a scythe in the hay field. He slashed and bashed at his foes till they were unrecognizable. Finishing he moved his hate to all the other green skinned abominations on the field. He slept not for three nights fighting with all he had. Finally, none were left standing.

Slipping into weariness he fainted next to his fathers raven covered body and slept. When he awoke it was to a messenger from the king. The King was apologetic to the loss of his father and felt that the loss of the men there was too great. He held Searos high among his troops for the victory. Though, Searos did not share this sentiment. Searos felt it was his fault that his father fell in battle, if only he had gotten there quicker. If only he had anticipated the goblins intelligence and strength, none of this would have happened. The army would not have suffered such a loss if he was stronger.

The king had also sent in his letter an order to go to First Tower, with word of more goblins and such had reach him and he wanted Searos to help them in battle. Searos vowed to his dead father then that he would avenge his death with all the blood that the goblins had to offer. With that he set off. Helping anyone who needed it not excepting more than a thank you and and a warm meal in return. The journey to First Tower was not a quick one, but a lot of people seemed to need something or another.

Searos thirsting for blood never turned down a chance to kill more of the green-skinned goblins even if it was just to help someone for nothing. After a year or so he finally reached First Tower and waited there for orders.
