Still in the set up phases, so please refrain from posting here until I get everything the way I want it, thanks in advance.

Subject: okay, may regret this, but what the hey

I have decided, despite many of the details being still in development, that I am going to open recruitment for this game and start accepting characters. Once I have at least 3 complete characters I will likely start up the game, finding ways to add in anyone who may later decide to join up.

I am aware that there are some things I still need to get posted up as far as characters go, and actually intend to make the QA thread in the morning to address such things as the Goblin racials and a few other important tidbits.

For the time being however, the key points you will need to know is that the system is Pathfinder, if you are not familiar with the system then that is okay, I'm still learning it myself. The SRD has all the information you may need to create a character using the core races, including several non-standard races and classes. Starting gold is 150% standard starting gold for your class, the trade off being that you MUST take either a craft or profession skill to reflect how you made money before joining Ladnar's little Adventuring Guild he's starting up. Ability scores have been pre-generated and are 13 16 14 10 18 17 before racial modifiers. Keep in mind that you will also need to select a "sub-class" as mentioned in a previous post. Keeping with the mythos of the setting the majority of Sorcerers will be of the Arcane Bloodline, but that is not to say that the other bloodlines are not available. Paladins are off limits, and I'd prefer Wizards to be specialist, but will still allow generalists as well. If you have access to source material I will consider non-core class or race options as well, including alternate class options and the like.

Any further questions can be posted here for the time being, or PMed directly to me if you prefer until I get the QA set up and ready to go.

Echo shrugged off the ribbing comments, knowing better than to let them get to him, after all, he was a bit of a trickster himself. Instead he only replied, with a goofy grin, "I dunno Gorn, I kinda like it, natural and musky with a hint of mint." He chuckled to himself a bit before getting right to eating, eager to finish this day the right way, with a meal and a bath before bed.

Glad you find the idea interesting and irresistible, I'm quite eager myself to see how it works out. That said, I haven't really gotten much worked out past what I have posted already due to work and family matters that will always take priority. I hope to get more details ironed out and ready shortly, but this game is still a good ways off from being ready to play.

I'm not sure how well this is gonna work, but I have decided on a system that will allow a character to develop a second skill set, albeit at a much slower rate than their standard class skills. Feel free to comment with your thoughts on the system.

Simply out, every 4 levels your character would gain a level as is he were a gestalt character with his normal class and whatever his secondary skill set was going to be.

I have, of course, come up with an example with which to illustrate just how this would work..

For this example I have thought up a half elf Ranger, who goes by the name Ladnar "The Wolf" Stoneshield. Ladnar, like any self respecting wolf is a melee focused ranger, and thus decides his secondary skill set should augment his ability to do damage. Fighter really doesn't bring much to the table for him since he is already proficient with all weapons, and will prefer to stick to lighter armor for mobility sake, so he goes with Rogue, reasoning that the sneak attack and additional skills will pay off better in the long run than a little armor training and a few feats.

For the first three levels The Wolf will be a standard Ranger, no variation from the normal 2 weapon Ranger, at 4th level though, when he gains his class features he gains them as if he were also a 1st level Rogue. He would gain the better of the 2 HD, Saves, BAB, Skill points, etc, as well as all class features including Sneak Attack. For levels 5-7 he again only grows as a Ranger, at 8 he gains the abilities of a 2nd level Rogue. By the end of it all, as a 20th level Ranger he would also have the skills and abilities of a 5th level Rogue. Favored Enemy, Combat Styles, Trap Finding, Sneak Attack, Tracking, and the whole nine yards.

For a better break down, lets look at it by level

Ladnar "The Wolf" Stoneshield, Half Elf Ranger (Rogue subspec)

1: Rng d10 HD, 6+Int x4 Skill points, BAB +1, FRW +2 +2 +0, 1st favored enemy (Animal), track, wild empathy

2: Rng d10 HD, 6+Int, BAB +2, FRW +3 +3 +0, Combat Style Feat (Two Weapon Fighting)

3: Rng d10, 6+Int, BAB +3, FRW +3 +3 +1, Endurance, 1st favored terrain (Forest)

4: Rng/Rog d10, 8+Int (rogue skill points), BAB +4, FRW +4 +4 +1 (Rng saves/BAB are better), Hunter’s bond (Wolf Animal Companion), Access to spells if high enough WIS, Sneak attack +1d6, trapfinding

5: Rng d10, 6+Int, BAB +5, FRW +4 +4 +1, 2nd favored enemy (Vermin)

Now I could keep this list going until level 20, but frankly I would rather not keep this up. The general idea is presented here though, At 8th level Landar would receive the Rogue's Skill point numbers again (as it is higher than the Ranger's) and the Class Features of a 2nd level Rogue (Evasion, rogue talent[Bleeding Attack]) as well as his 8th Level Ranger BAB, Saves, and HD (as these are all higher than the Rogue's) and his class features (Swift tracker, 2nd favored terrain [Underground])

Class and subclass will be decided at character creation, and the only deviation I will allow from these chosen paths is the use of a single Prestige Class, so if you are wanting to work toward a specific Prestige, you'd likely have to manage your class and subclass to meet the prerequisites.

Side Effects of the Age of Magic

During the Period of Time now referred to as the Age of Magic, the many races began to experiment more and more with the Arcana Arts, resulting in various changes to the world. Among the most obvious, and probably interesting, developments tied to this Age, is the rise of several races of Shapeshifters that had previously never existed in this world. Of these races, the most widely recognized are the Beast-kin and Changelings. Generations of exposure to Arcane magic apparently altered their very genetic make up, making them into something entirely new. (This said, just about any race choice can easily be explained as the result of Arcane overexposure, so feel free to ask if there are any other races you would consider)

The Realms of the Enlightened are also now scattered with the scars of many an Epic Arcane Duel between rivals. Entire stretches of land are damaged beyond any hope of repair within the lifetimes of many of those living now. As if drawn to the residual magic energy, these areas, known commonly as Mage Scars, are usually home to vile creatures and hotspots for cross dimensional visits. They are also usually rich in unusual minerals and strange ores too though, so draw many profiteers looking to make a quick profit.

Mage's towers and labs also stand scattered across the Realms, many of which are no longer inhabited by their previous Masters. Thieves have found that even in this new Age they can make a profit raiding these old towers, though the endeavor is not without its risks, as many arcane traps and other surprises await those foolish or brave enough to enter.

Flintlock pistols, muskets, explosives (as I mentioned in the post regarding Goblins), among other things. Firearms are still not a major player in these early years of this new age, but as new advancements are made then better, more reliable weaponry may be developed.

Subject: Characters.

As I am pulling source material from a myriad variety of books, and publishers, I am open to just about any race and class combo you present me once things get rolling, with just a couple exceptions. I am not familiar with Psionics, and as such do not allow them. I don't think Paladins make a very good fit in any of the games I run, as I tend to have groups and missions that walk a very thin line between good and evil or right and wrong. Being that this is a (mostly) Pathfinder game, some races that had level adjustments in 3.x will not have said adjustments applied, since I feel they are up to par with the PF core races without being vastly superior.

Do try to come up with good reasons why a character is what he or she is, and how they fit into the world. If you are not sure about a race or class you would like to play as, shoot me a PM and I'll look it over (be sure to include the source, or info if homebrew, so I can do the proper research). I personally will be pulling info from Iron Kingdoms, Steam and Sorcery, World of Warcraft, and an OGL Steampunk book, just to name a few.

Subject: Gronz

As if hours and hours of climbing this ridiculously steep cliff face had not been bad enough, the shrill screeches overhead alerted the half orc to an incoming threat that would prove very hazardous to their survival if it was not dealt with. Realizing that trying to fight these bird creatures while hanging from the cliff face would be suicidal at best Gronz pushed himself to climb faster and hopefully make the last 50 feet to the plateau above where he could make a better stand against any foe on stable ground.

((Yes I realize attempting to rush this climb could very well result in a fall, dropping not only Gronz, but putting any team mates below him at risk too, but he is a rash half orc, and not one to fully think things like this through. If he falls and in the process knocks anyone else down with him, I personally apologize, but I feel it is truly what the character would do in this instance, and is what he will be doing. On the plus side, if he does manage to make it before anyone else, and before these birds get to them, he does have a rope in his pack and may be able to find some way to secure it and lower it to the others.))

After a mad rush to the warehouse they had been told to deliver these people to, and several near misses from projectiles being fired in his general direction, Echario let out a sigh of relief to finally come to the end of this horrible mission. This entire mission had been one disaster after another, and had it not been for the fact they were being paid for this, he likely would never have been involved in such a mass disaster. He couldn't help but feel a tinge of guilt in knowing that he had deceived these poor helpless slaves and had delivered them from one prison into another, but business was business, and the jingling of coins would do wonders to alleviate the guilty feelings. Not at all interested in conversing with this merchant Echo took his leave of the warehouse before the others, eager to get back to the Guild and get this day over with by getting a hot bath, a good meal, and hopefully some much needed sleep to clear his head.

Subject: Goblin Nation

I had actually planned on it being the Hobgoblins that brought about the rise of the Goblin Nation, uniting their lesser kin under their already militaristic way of life and putting an end to much of the savagery the Goblins were known for in ages past. That said, Hobgoblins hold many of the positions of power in their new society, while standard Goblins are left to live their lives, work at a trade, and be mostly free (so long as it serves the greater good of Goblinkind).

To bring in nonstandard Goblin class options, such as wizards and the like, I had decided that a pair of twin blue half dragon hobgoblins had made it their purpose to enlighten their lesser kin and train those who wanted to learn.

Hobgoblins and Bugbears train their smaller kin in direct combat and archery, training Fighters, Rangers, and more direct combat options.

Some of the other races, namely the fey, have also taken an interest in the developing Goblin Nation, and have also begun offering services training Goblins in the more Natural Arts such as Druidism and other options.

Naturally, with this increase in magic among the common goblins some are even born with innate ability, growing into sorcerers and even bards in some cases.

Goblin Clerics still tend to revere the deities they would have before, or deities that favor advancement of this new Age.

In regards to their involvement in tech and industry, their capital is practically on top of an Iron Mine, and as such they work mostly with Iron. They have developed various methods of using Black Powder to help excavate Iron in massive quantities, and have also realized they can apply these applications to combat. As such, Goblins are the world's current experts in explosives and demolition.

So, Haruspex, what would you most like to see come of this idea? How developed should the world's technological advances be? Should the Age of Machines have just begun, Or should we be well into the Age?

As a bit of reference, the previous age is known as the Age of Magic. Many magical experiments were conducted among several races, which I am using to explain certain races into being.

Edition wise, its a melding of 3.x and Pathfinder, taking a lot of race and class info from PF's system, which is so similar to 3.5 anyway that I may just end up using PF only.

Goblins are not the dominant race, nor will all characters be goblins, I just felt that goblins deserved a place among the other player races, as they've always seemed like an interesting race to me.

I'm curious to know though, what would you, my potential players, most like to see integrated into this new world of technology and magic?

Subject: Would anyone be interested in this?

While the game is far from ready, I wanted to post a thread real quick to see how many people would be interested in attempting to play in the world I am creating. The idea all started with my trying to figure out an interesting and appealing way for me to integrate Goblins into a player race rather than the pests most DnD'ers know them to be. I came up with the idea of a sort of Renaissance period for Goblin kind, in which the Hobgoblins brought their lesser kin under their strict militaristic ways and organized the rise of a new Goblin Nation. The idea seemed simple enough that I have run with it, going so far as to have already worked out some details of their capital city and am working on new racials to reflect the change from monster manual pest to pc race.

Now the big question became, if I was going to put Goblin kind through this major change in the way they work, how would I change the rest of the setting to reflect the changes that may very well have been the catalyst for the rise of the Goblin Nation? After toying with several ideas, it hit me, an Industrial Revolution of sorts! Looking into several sources, including but not limited to Eberron and Iron Kingdoms, I am slowly piecing together a fantasy game with splashes of Steam Punk influence and other changes to the standard Fantasy based DnD/PF games. That said I want the world to be different from Eberron, but not quite as dark and gritty as Iron Kingdoms. So, for this period in time in the game world, there is a relatively shaky peace among the so called "Enlightened Races" (or simply the player races that dominate the realms). Each race is getting a slight overhaul to reflect the changes to the world they live in, while hopefully maintaining much of the balance already in place in the published rulesets. I'm thinking of using the PF races and classes as a starting point, but drawing influences from the other source books I have, including new class options, craft skills, and weaponry for characters to use.

As I am still working out a lot of the setting details, and haven't even gotten a map made up yet the game will not be ready for a while, and I'm still not 100% sure on the plot hook I'd even use to get things rolling. I just want to see how many people would be willing to step into this New Age with me and embrace the world changing influences of steam engines and clockwork.

Topic: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain - Fizzled
Subject: Vellastion

The morning sun came early the next day, and Val welcomed the warming embrace of the light with a heavy heart. Dressing for their trek toward the mountain he donned his armor and prepared his weapons before offering up a prayer to the Shining One, asking that his light guide and protect their odd little group, even if they were misguided infidels who did not know the warm love of the true God. Dressed, packed, and ready to go he pulled on his cloak, pulling the hood up over his head to hide his face and of course his horns he joined the others below for breakfast before they set out. Again this food served only to tease his dark hunger, and he could tell this was going to be a rough hike as he had barely managed to satiate his thirst the night before on the rats he had caught in the alleys.

As expected, the going was rough, and as the day dragged on and on he could feel the dark thirst rising in him. He would have to find something to feed on before sleeping that night, or else he feared he would not be able to control himself around his companions. As if detecting the mental stress the whole situation was causing him the sinister voice in the back of his mind hissed at him, "You know, if you would just give in to your hunger, then these cravings wouldn't be so bad. Imagine how much sweeter that waitress would have tasted than those rats. The smell of her skin driving your senses wild as he sweet life force flowed into your hungry mouth, blood trickling down your pale skin.." The image was too much to handle and he shouted at no one in particular, the voice was in his head after all, "QUIET!, Quiet, I can not listen to this anymore!!" Needless to say, is his companions had not already been looking at him funny they were sure to think differently of him now... he would just have to make sure to find some way to quench his thirst and quiet the voices, though with the seeming scarcity of wildlife he was not sure how he would manage that.

((Will attempt to find something, anything, to feed on during the night without wandering into the hills where they had been warned before of goblins. If nothing can be found or caught then when he does turn in for the night he will purposefully set up his bedroll away from the others, partly in an attempt to hide his face, and partly to put distance between them if his hunger becomes too much))

As was to be expected Gronz was a half-orc of few words, saying next to nothing the entire hike. When addressed he would normally grunt or give short one word answers that quickly put a stop to any conversation attempts. He had made up his mind after the prison break that he was not here to make friends with these people, he was here for the pay and the challenges to come, for the chance to see what he was truly capable of.

When the storm rolled in with its thick clouds and biting rain he cursed loudly in orcish but for the most part continued on with little complaint, there was little point in complaining about things that were beyond their control. When camp was set up at the base of the mountain he set about to shaking dry, much like a wet dog, which he smelled pretty close to as well. He then dug a trail ration from his pack, munched on the tough dried food that made him almost miss the mansion, almost but not quite, and volunteered to take first watch as he seemed to have the least trouble seeing in these overcast conditions.
