So with the bow you use your Dex mod for the attack roll, being a composite bow (nothing to do with magic) it has extra pull that allows you to apply your Str mod to the damage, as well as +1 damage for the enhancement bonus, and any bonus for things such as point-blank shot. In this case the foe is within the 30 ft range, so pbs will apply.

Rapid Shot, as the only feat you have that requires specific "use" is a full-round action, meaning you can use it only if you do not move or take any other action such as drinking a potion.

Aim, being a class feature akin to a Rogue's sneak attack, can be used in conjunction with an attack action, thus you could potentially move and then use Aim. You could, at this level, delay your action to the next initiative spot (though your initiative was pretty bad this combat, so Gelion will actually be acting last) for a +1 attack and damage. (these bonuses increase as you level)

Based on your sheet it looks as though your attacks, assuming not using Rapid Shot or Aim, would be at +6 to hit and 1d8+5 once you factor in your Str, PBS, and the Enchantment. (it would be +5 and 1d8+4 if the target is more than 30 ft from you) Rapid shot allows two shots, each at a -2 to hit, so it would actually be +4/+4 1d8+5/1d8+5. (or one less to hit and damage if target is more than 30 ft.)

Subject: first time trying this...

So I'm trying to map the layout of this combat, this will both give you all an idea of where everything is, and provide numbers for the 3 foes, so you can specify in your post which number you are attacking... The numbers represent the three enemies, the | or - marks indicate the locations of the tunnels, and each character is marked by their initial, N for Nam, G for Gelion, L for Lini, S for Sukini. The * marks are where the sunrods landed.

[ ][|][ ][ ][|][ ][ ][|][ ]
[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][1][ ]
[ ][ ][3][ ][ ][ ][ ][2][ ][-]
[-][ ][ ][ ][*][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]
[ ][ ][*][ ][ ][ ][*][ ][ ][ ]
[ ][ ][ ][ ][L][G][ ][ ][ ][-]
[ ][ ][ ][N][|][|][S][ ][ ][ ]

((The spacing didn't quite stick as I had hoped it would on the diagram, so I probably won't be doing this in future combats, unless everyone wants me to keep doing this.))

Subject: moving on

Nam spoke up, answering for the Dwarf, "I know how to work these railcars, I was here during the Rock Worm incident mentioned earlier, and I have a few sunrods on hand should we need them." Motioning for the recruits to follow he leads the way into the mine and directs you all to pile into the railcar before climbing in himself near the hand brake and starting the car down the tracks.

The ride is uneventful, with Nam effectively braking the Green railcar at the dead end and then and leading everyone to the Azure line as detailed by Kazadar. With the light from the torches lining the tunnel you are easily able to spot the markers on the wall. Nam once again stopped the car and then leads the way down the tunnel, signalling everyone to stay close to him. Moving down the tunnel he motions that he can hear something up ahead, and Gelion also indicates he can hear it as well. ((ironically neither rabbit hears the movement ahead))

Moving cautiously you continue down the tunnel, aware an ambush may be waiting ahead. As you reach the mouth of the tunnel and step into the cavern a movement from the shadows catches your eyes and then everything goes dark, the light on your helmets has been extinguished just as the Dwarf had described happening to the miners.

Being able to see in the dark unlike his recruits Nam springs into action and strikes a handful of sunrods against the nearby stone wall and tosses several lit sunrods out into the chamber in different directions, illuminating the cavern for the recruits. The chamber is roughly 50 feet by 35 feet around, with several other tunnels leading out, one on the left wall, two on the right wall, and 3 on the far wall opposite where you entered. In the newly illuminated room you are now able to see what you could not see before. Three small humanoids with dark violet skin and black tiger-esque stripes on their limbs. Dull yellow eyes peer out toward you, squinting against the light, and a large mouthful of sharp fangs screams a battle cry toward you. The face appears bat-like, with a flat nose and large pointed ears. Their arms are long and hang past their knees, each figure holding what appears to be a club made from stone.

((So the scene is set, Nam had the highest init so I resolved his action for this turn, providing the rest of you with light. The room is roughly 50 feet between the left and right walls, and 35 feet between the tunnel you entered through and the far wall, tunnels as described. The tunnel created by the miners is about 10 feet wide, so you were able to walk 2 by 2 shoulder to shoulder into the cavern, the out branching tunnels seem to be narrower. As usual feel free to ask questions in QA... Two of the purple figures are in the far right corner, and the third is to the left of the room. Please try to be specific as to which one you are attacking, and it would help a lot if you include to hit mods and damage figures as well. Each figure is within a single move action from where you are at the entrance.))

Topic: Question of the Week
Subject: another alternative...

Unearthed Arcana also presents an alternate armor rule known as Damage Conversion, wherein the armor bonus instead converts that much lethal damage into non-lethal damage. So a Fighter in Full plate, which iirc is +8 AC, when taking say 12 points of lethal damage would instead take 8 points of non-lethal damage and 4 points of lethal damage. Large amounts of non-lethal damage then could end up leading to said fighter falling unconscious, which more realistically represent how exhausting it must be to fight, and take a beating, while wrapped entirely in heavy steel.

Topic: Question of the Week
Subject: AC

I like to think that the "soak" mechanic is built into the standard AC of d20 systems, just more behind the scenes. I know that generally it is translated as a higher AC makes you harder to hit, but I think it's more that the higher AC from heavy armor reflects the fact that while you may still have been hit, it simply was not hard enough to hurt you. Whether that be the armor soaking up the damage, a glancing blow, or even just a hard miss.

Obviously with light armor and a high Dex mod it is easy to imagine the Rogue, Ranger, Monk, whatever, as simply dodging, sidestepping, or just plain lucky. But I picture the full plate clad Fighter or Paladin as more just shrugging off the hits thanks to being wrapped in steel, or even just deflecting the blow with a shield or parry with their weapon.

Unearthed Arcana did present alternate rules wherein armor provided DR rather than static AC, so while you were getting hit, the heavier armor simply meant the armor ate part of the damage before it impacted you. I'll have to pull the book off the shelf and take a look for more specifics.

So checking the book it seems the armor bonus for most armor was lowered, while adding DR to the character. Padded Armor for instance offers 1 AC and no DR, it just isn't going to soak up damage like a nice cured leather of piece of steel. Full plate, by contrast, offers 4 AC and DR 4/-. The DR is not changed by enchantments to the armor, shields do not add DR, and there are even rules for how much DR would be provided by Natural Armor. It even goes so far as to point out how at low levels this is a huge advantage to the player, as medium armor alone can typically negate the average damage of a low level foe such as a Goblin, but gradually the advantage swings to monsters, as their damage output increases the 2-4 points of DR means little in the face of a Stone Giant's club for instance, and with lower AC the Giant is more likely to hit you.

I was just using some simple red plastic counters I had to represent enemies, numbered with a small d6 for ease of keeping track. While I was looking on Amazon though I found several of the "army man" style sets of various zombies, skeletons, monsters (think universal studios, wolfman, dracula, etc) and I know those would work well too.

I really only use the minis for combat, I find that with new players like those I am working with it makes it easier to manage the chaos of battle if you have some sort of visual representation. "The orc raider is 8 squares away from you and you can move up to 6, what would you like to do?" At this point they know with standard movement they can't get within melee range, so it's either move up and let him come to them on his turn, or engage with range... Otherwise the minis are just sitting there unused.

The Druid, being smaller and slower than the two Elves he travels with usually rides his bear, so of course I also made a mini for that purpose. While not the best job, it does represent a bear being ridden...

Subject: Creative solution to an otherwise costly problem.

So I started running a Pathfinder game for my girlfriend, her friend, and the friend's husband. We had our first (her very first) session this past weekend and as I am not entirely sure where all my minis and such are, or if I had appropriate minis, we used a handful of Hero Clix the husband had. They worked of course, aside from the fact that the bases on the wolves we were using (a druid and hunter in this party, so two animal companions) had the longer style bases that take up two squares on the mat, when as medium creatures they should only have taken up one space each. While a minor problem at best I decided to seek a solution.

First I took to Amazon (using the link provided by Olan if I decided to buy anything) to look at obtaining actual minis that would both better represent the characters we had, and would take up the right amount of mat space to avoid any confusion during combat as to which spaces were open and which were free. I located a decent selection of unpainted, Reaper brand, minis that looked great, but at between $6 and $12 each that was a little steep (especially with me between jobs) AND I would have had to eventually get appropriate paints and invest the time and money in adding color to the otherwise bland grey figures. In the end I opted out of buying the figures, erring on the side of frugality.

Then I remembered Paizo does a series of Pathfinder Pawns, Cardboard minis like you would find in a board game with the little plastic stands. So I price checked those, and found a set that would have given me a nice selection of humanoid NPCs AND animal companions, which I could use for this particular group quite nicely. The $40 price tag however turned me away once again, damn this economy!

I had almost given up, resigned to defeat, and accepted that we would just have to work around the oddly shaped figures we had available. Then I remembered something I had seen on a previous Google search, Paper Minis. So I took to Google as quickly as I could and began a search to see how I could go about getting my hands on some decent paper minis, I had just bought a printer after all and could print something out that would both be properly sized, but closer in appearance to the characters than having Taskmaster as our cleric. I however did not count on Paper Minis being something that I would have to buy, as I quickly found that in order to get the ones I had seen previously I would have to pay for the PDF that contained them. This would just not do, as I was already paying for ink and paper in the printer, I was not willing to pay for the images I would also be printing.

So instead I took to Google again, this time searching for the archetype of each of my player's characters, a female Cleric, a Halfling Druid and his trusty bear companion, and a sword wielding Elven Huntress and her loyal wolf. I found images I thought both looked good and seemed to fit the characters and then with a little resizing, duplication, and a flip I had the template for my own paper minis. Now I don't have any cardstock, so the figures would be mighty flimsy without a little extra support, so I cut a few strips off a notecard I had lying around and put spines in each figure for added support and then secured them to based I made out of said notecard. For a little added weight I then taped a penny to the bottom of each base and now I have what I believe to be more appropriate minis for my group, and all without spending any extra money. Now I just have to wait two weeks to see what everyone thinks of the work I put into these.

I'm curious though as to what my fellow Innmates think of the idea, have you ever improvised something like this on the fly, am I just too cheap for not wanting to buy something? Feel free to speak your mind on the matter. I'd be willing to post pics too if anyone wants to see what I ended up with.

No problem at all, the majority of the rules heavy stuff is handled behind the scenes, and since you're new to the whole thing just take a quick look over the rules and give me some idea of what kind of character you would like to play and we can work out the character and get things started.

I could still use another player or two for my game. We are still early in, not too much going on just yet, as you can see within this thread. Don't let the Final Fantasy coating intimidate you, this is still very much a Pathfinder game, very little is different in the way the game is played.

Xaikon had never been one to stay in an Inn when visiting a city, he always liked to know the best way out of a tight spot, and being stuck in a room with one way in or out was not his idea of safe. He had spent the night instead in a back alley across the street from the Inn, his ebon feathers blending nicely into the shadows. When the sun had risen he too rose, donning his armor and checking to make sure that his gear had not found its way elsewhere. Satisfied that nothing was missing he strapped everything into the proper place before picking up his pack and heading back to the Inn for a quick meal. He had found another secluded space in the corner and was awaiting a waitress to take his order when the guards had burst into the Inn. Bad business that, guards tend to mean trouble, even if they themselves make the trouble... He consciously pulled his hood up further to hide his face and watched casually out of the corner of his eyes to make sure they were not coming toward him. When the troop had left he relaxed a bit, but the tension returned when the Innkeeper seemed to get visibly upset over whatever news they had brought.

Scanning the room he spotted the lady who had spoken to him the night before, clearly she had stayed the night here and was now easing closer to the bar. He recalled something about her saying she was looking for work during their brief conversation and assumed that she must be looking into the commotion in hopes of finding gainful work. As she had spoken with him the night before without judgement he decided she must be okay. He moved across the bar, careful to avoid eye contact with any of the other patrons and found a place close to her. Leaning toward her he whispered, "I do not know if you remember me from last night, but I was curious if you had any idea what this was about just now?"

The old Dwarf chuckled at the rapid-fire string of questions, trying to catch each one so no question went unanswered, "Leave it to a young Hume to rattle questions off like he's not gonna be around nex' week to ask more..."

He pondered for a moment on how to answer each question before continuing on, "Nay lad, the boys saw nothin'. Whatever was lurkin down there took out their lights before they could see anythin'. They did say they heard screechin' though, oddest thing that, since bats don't usually nest that far below ground, not much huntin' down that low. Whatever it was knocked out their lights, before makin' tha attack. These four lads, like yerselves, had no means to see in the dark without their lights, so they fled tha way they had come, toward tha lights comin' from the main tunnels. As they ran they were pummelled by stones, big an' small, and one o' the lads ended up havin' a piece of sharp rock break off in his shoulder after being struck. The others was much luckier, escapin' with minor bruisin' and cuts."

He shook his head as he finished that final sentence, concern for his men clear upon his bearded face. "The attack may as well have been immediate, the lads said before tha lights went black they could see a large central cavern an' several tunnels leadin' in various directions, then things went dark and stones started to fly."

He paused again, this time to take a drink from his tankard before continuing to address the questions, "Ye asked if there had been attacks before this one, and in short, yes. As with any part of our world we come across various beasts under the ground, but most avoid us. We had a problem with a rock worm some years back, but nothin' in a long while."

Turning a moment to address Lini he adds, "Nay my flyin' friend, I'm afraid none of tha crew that was attacked were Dwarves, and any Dwarves we have on hand are busy overseein' digs that are still active." He rises to his feet, the old chair creaking beneath him as he pushes out of it, and heads inside for a moment. He returns with three mining helmets, unfortunately not a single one is Moogle sized, as Moogles do not typically work the mines, and offers one to the young Hume, the Viera, and the third to Nam. "I dunno how much good they will do ya, as the boys was wearing the same helmets before things went dark, but I can offer ye these helmets fitted with lights." Each helmet is a dirty dull metal dome with a small attached chamber filled with a small flame and a lens made for focusing the light put off by the flame, and each helmet will put off roughly as much light as a torch while keeping your hands free.

Nam scowled slightly at the Viera's questions, it seemed to him almost as if she were not paying attention, and in life and death matters such as this not paying attention to a client was one of the Varg's pet peeves. Regardless he answers the question, not letting on that he was the slightest bit bothered by the question, or anything else, "Echario le'Rouge and I go way back, to before he started the Falcons. I have been a Falcon since long before there were Falcons."

On your heirloom bow, are you going with the original story that Gelion's bow was his father's bow? OR Is it something he picked up after setting out on his own?

Has Gelion done any "work" in caves in the past?

And no, neither of your funny-bunny companions have darkvision, just low-light. Only Nam can see in the dark at this point.
