Topic: I want opinions...
Subject: I want opinions...

So my roommates and I have started a tabletop game using some online rules that quite simply try to put a Final Fantasy flavored candy coating over the Pathfinder/3.5 rules; located at this site if you are interested in taking a look yourself. In an effort to include some of the class customization in the series, be it by the job system, dress spheres, or what have you, I am implementing an artifact I am, for lack of a better name, calling a Crystal of Heroes.

Upon aqcuiring a crystal, the bearer will have the abilities of one additional class unlocked and available to him. Only class abilities though, no change to hd, hp, saves, etc. When exp is rewarded they can then choose to invest some/all of their exp into the crystal in order to unlock more classes, or advance the abilities of an already unlocked class.

As an example, on of the PCs is a Ninja, when getting the Crystal she will gain access to the class features of a 1st level Black Mage. Meaning she gains cantrips, 1st level spells, and MP as if she had taken a level in BM but no increase to HD, saves, skill points, etc.

I haven't decided how much exp I want to require the PCs to invest into their Crystals to unlock new classes or level previously unlocked classes. So my questions are; 1, how badly am I going to end up screwing myself over as GM by allowing something like this? Does making them choose between gaining character levels or unlocking more options provide enough balance? And how much exp would you suggest I require to unlock new classes or advance unlocked ones?

Pretty sure the 3.5 supplement Heroes of Battle covers that and I want to say I've seen rules for encounters like this elsewhere too.

There are alternate class options presented in Unearthed Arcana that may also prove somewhat useful in this theme. There is the Totem Barbarian, which provides a primal shaman based feel. The Druidic Avenger, a druid without an animal companion that instead has rage. A Savage Bard, for a tribal support class. And I'm sure other sources have further variants that would fit the savage/tribal niche.

I was just levelling my Mechromancer last night, I however am playing on PC and I'm not exactly equipped for online play at this point as it is. Even if I was capable of online play I'm only somewhere between level 13 and 15 anyway.

I found a PrC that has an AC bonus that is conditional, which may be fitting to your class... This link should take you to the page and you can see if that seems like something you'd agree with. It's conditional, flavorful, and helpful.

Why not simple (non-composite) bows, most "non-civilized" cultures would use a bow. To the settlers of the "new world" the Native American's seemed like savages, and they had their bows and arrows for hunting and fighting.

I'd drop the spell-like ability, it feels out of place for a "savage" honestly. Replacing it with a scaling Dodge bonus to AC.

OR

Handle armor like a druid, including shield choice, to where if they wear anything outide of what is allowed they not only suffer the penalty you have already imposed, but lose some of the class features as well.

OR

As I suggested previously, the Barbarian DR, doesn't make him any less likely to be hit, simply allows him to shrug off some of the damage, after all he's probably wrestled a bear or two out in the woods, or tackled a boar, or something like that and would be tougher than the average armored fighter who relies on his metal shell to protect his soft skin.

Subject: Just my two cents here, but...

I feel like imposing a penalty for wearing armor greatly limits the class. I fail to see why a tribeman would not wear hide armor, or even just a rough version of leather armor, especially if he's going to be involved in melee combat from time to time. If you are dead-set on keeping the penalty for armor then give the class natural armor, DR like a Barbarian, the dodge feat, or even the monk's armor bonus, scaled down of course. I know giving bonus feats from the Fighter list does allow a player to take Dodge as a bonus feat, or even as a regular feat, but I feel like giving it to the class promotes the idea he's an agile hunter not weighed down by the heavy armor of the "civilized" warriors.

Also the whole idea of "no iron pots or mirrors", if the tribes have no concept of money they would trade with wanderers from civilized areas, like say Rangers, and something they cannot make themselves, like an iron pot, would appeal to them when trading, no?

Topic: Character ideas
Subject: Character ideas

I'm not sure what brought this on this morning but while getting ready for my day I recalled a few years back when I had tried to convince one of my coworkers to GM a D&D game for us, to which he replied, "I'll only do it if you play a transgendered dwarf who believes he is an elf.." to which I replied, "okay, I'll name him after you!" Now as crazy as that idea was, (and in case you're wondering the game never even made it past that initial joke, no planning ever even took place, not even character creation) I realized this morning the roleplaying implications of something like that, and came up with a couple other ideas that are less weird but would still be interesting to play with and would require some good and interesting roleplaying on the part of the player.

This first one if a bit of a Beauty and the Beast inspired idea that I feel would be extremely interesting. Enter a charismatic scoundrel, part rogue, part bard, all ego. Charisma through the roof, and used to getting his way and getting away with everything using his silvered words and good looks. I'm sure we all know the type...
Well one day this particular scoundrel, let's call him Jack for simplicity, sneaks into a gypsy camp and steals a trinket of some sort, not even a magic item, just something that looks valuable and easy to fence for a few extra coins in his pocket. He gets in and out unhindered and even manages to find a fence and sell his ill-gotten goods and pocket a few coins. Feeling rather good about himself he heads to the local tavern, wooing a young, naive barmaid or two and gets himself set up in a room for the night for a little adult fun.
Now most of us know the stories of gypsy curses and how foolish it is to steal from one, so I'm sure you can see where this is going now. The next morning Jack is awoken to the barmaid he seduced screaming at the top of her lungs and fleeing the room. Puzzled he awakes and catches a glance of himself in the mirror over the wash basin. His chiseled features have been replaced with the furry hyena-like features of a gnoll and his dulcet singing voice replaced with the gutteral snarls of a gnoll. (mechanics wise it'd be up to the GM to determine if the transformation effects his stats, though I personally would assume a major hit to his charisma and bard song abilities. Maybe even be a little harsh on poor Jack and deem his armor no longer fits the new body, unless he already had magic armor of course)
So now Gnoll-Jack has to find his way out of the inn without being murdered by would-be monster slayers thinking he's part of some scouting/raiding team of gnolls, re-acquire the stolen item, and locate the gypsy caravan that has already moved on in order to return what he stole and hopefully break the curse. Of course, depending on the Player, Jack may find his mind snapped by the transformation all together and eventually adapt and learn to live with being a gnoll and not even bother undoing the change at all.

****************************************

Another similar idea I had draws influence from The Frog Prince. The king is dying, his eldest son is next in line to take the throne but his little brother wants to rule instead, so hires a witch, alchemist, wizard, whatever to hex, poison, enchant, his older brother into a Boggard, Kuo-toa, or even something as simple as a Goblin or Kobold, and has his brother run out of the kingdom claiming he's either attempting to kill the king, or perhaps even framing him for the death of the king.
Now this would work as an NPC adventure hook, the "Frog Prince" could approach the PCs and try to convince them of what has happended and enlist their aid in returning him to his former self and reclaiming the kingdom from his corrupt brother. OR Froggy could even be a PC and have to enlist other PCs to help him, one (or all) of which could possibly even be loyal subjects of his royal Froginess and seek to return him to the throne and expose the younger brother for what he has done.

***************************

Either way, with characters like these the player (or players) would have to rely on tactics ans strategies that may be different from their norm, Jack would have to learn he can no longer talk his way out of everything and may have to start favoring brute force and/or rely more on stealth and shadows than his mouth. Froggy may well end up having to hire or rely on types he may previously have felt below him because no one else would believe him, and maybe even the seedy types don't either but are only in it for the promise of reward.

Thoughts, opinions, other ideas that fall along the same basic character concept? All are welcome!

Topic: Imagination stifled?
Subject: Mine..

My contribution here isn't due to a DM refusing to allow it or anything like that, simply because I can never get a game going or find time to get a tabletop group together. The concept is a fairly simple one, but one I've always been excited to actually try to get off the ground.

To set up the character I first cooked up a backstory for his birth, why not start a character from the beginning right? Well this particular character, who I named after my deceased brother Benjamin, is the illegitimate son of a young Elven noble who was not ready to settle into his role as a politician and so set out see the world living the free life of a travelling bard for a few decades or so, wooing every pretty young thing he met along the way naturally. Well Benjamin's mother was one such "victim" for lack of a better term, and after a night of seduction and passion ended up pregnant, though of course the young bard was long gone before that fact ever came to light. So alone she worked and lived as her half-elven son developed and grew within her womb until finally the day came for him to come into the world, sadly she did not live to meet her son and he was raised by his uncle, the local blacksmith, because try as they might his aunt and uncle had never been able to have a child of their own. Childhood was good to young Benjamin, who for the most part never knew he was different from the other children his age and had many friends.

It wasn't until his teen years, after he started apprenticing under his Uncle, that he began to realize he was different as did the other children he had grown up with. When his uncle finally told him the story of his conception and birth and why he was different he decided he owed it to himself, and his poor mother, to learn more about his heritage and embrace the duality of his bloodline. He began to study Elven culture and magic while continuing to work with his uncle in the smithy, embracing both steel and spell, combining all that he had learned in his studies. (I had intended to play him as a Magus, for those familiar with Pathfinder, though I probably could also play him as a cross-classed character, though that would take away from some of the feel I was going for.)

Shortly after his 19th birthday or so, he forged himself a blade and bid his aunt and uncle farewell and set out into the wide world to expand on his knowledge base, to learn more about his father and their people, to expand his understanding of magic, swordplay, and smithing.

I had fully intended for Benjamin to be obsessed (for lack of a better term) with learning new ways of forging both weapons and armor, improving his weapon and armor selection as he progressed in the class and became able to wear heavier armor and still cast his spells, even eventually going so far as to learn to work mithril with elven smiths and of course eventually find his own place in the world as he went along, always chasing rumors of rare materials, learning regional forging habits, and training under smiths of various races, all while learning more about his Elven heritage and improving as a spellcaster as well.

As much as I would love to truly make this character and let him shine, I realize the amount of time and work a GM would have to put into crafting adventures that would appeal to his motivations, as well as the amount of in-game time he would take up simply learning and practicing his craft, that's a lot of time at a forge, which makes for less time out slaying and looting.

Subject: Moving on...

((In the interest of getting things underway I am going to go ahead and fast-forward a bit and if you fine folk want to back post in this wonderful game of tag then please feel free to do so.))

After a rousing little game of "catch-the-thief" to get the blood pumping the unlikely trio finally heads out the north gate and into the wilderness beyond their home. Much of the surrounding landscape, despite many attempts to cultivate and convert the land into stable farmland, is still swampy. With this fact in mind the group moves at a slow but steady pace, being careful where they step so as not to sink into any particularly muddy areas or disturb any of the native, harmless wildlife that resides in these swampy fields. As they press on further from the developed areas around the city twisted and gnarled trees become more commonplace in the swampy terrain and it does not take very long at all to realize that it is far too quiet, something is not right here; no native birdcalls can be heard, no rustling in the trees or bushes, it is almost as if the native species are gone, or hiding from something...

((The swampy terrain may provide some interesting moments of little Nefrelle getting stuck in the mud and having to be lifted out by Kal'Ar and other such interesting group interactions as you deem fit, so keep that in mind.))

Not much to work on, but work is work and we need the gil and the attention. If we pull this off then perhaps the posters may recommend us for other jobs and we can get a better cash flow going.." Taking a drink from his mug he sets the now empty cup back upon the table and slides his chair away from the table. "If you need me, or think of any other questions you'd like to ask before heading out then I'll be at my workshop." With that he excuses himself from the table and heads out the door, winking at the waitress he had been flirting with earlier as he pushed the door open and headed out into the street alone.

The day had started like any other, rising bright and early to meet with Alru at the local tavern to check the job board for new work in order to garner the guild fame and funds. When you arrive you find Alru at a corner table being Alru, flirting with one of the barmaid, his goggles rested atop his brow accenting his sandy blonde hair. Noticing your arrival he briefly pulls his attention away from the barmaid, motions you to join him, and gives the barmaid a sly wink, "Sorry Doll, business calls, I'll catch up with you later."

Once everyone is seated and has ordered their breakfast Alru motions to the job board, which as you can plainly see is close to bare. "Slim pickings today fellas, only 2 jobs posted up there, and one has already been claimed by those damned Blue Wind fools. I swear they always seem to get to the best paying jobs before we can get in here."

Pausing briefly to take another bite of his biscuits and gravy he looks again to the board, "I went ahead and claimed the remaining job for us, we need any work we can get at this point. It doesn't pay well, but it seems simple enough. Apparently the local fauna has started acting strangely, though the poster doesn't go into detail as how exactly they are acting strangely, and several locals have pooled together their meager wages to hire someone to investigate and see if the cause can be determined." He pauses briefly, his gaze locked somewhere in the distance, if you follow his gaze you notice that the barmaid he was flirting with has bent over to pick up something and his gaze is locked on her hind quarters.

It is Kal'ar who finally pulls his attention back to the matter at hand by slamming his tankard back on the table after taking a long drink. Shaking his head the Al Bhed turns back to the group, "So all you have to do is head north beyond the Keep and see if you can determine what is causing the wildlife to act strangely; any questions?"

((Feel free to RP your arrival, breakfast order, or even your morning routine and the trek to the tavern as you see fit. I know I haven't got much to work with here, but hopefully once we manage to get things moving we can get a nice pace and get the action really started.))
