Zeph Blighthunter
Various areas within the school
Tuesday Morning

The night passed for the Goblin and his companion rather uneventfully, no further dreams, no other disturbances. Zeph stood up from his spot on the floor and immediately set to putting his old, worn out leather armor on as he did every morning. Always be prepared for a fight, he thought to himself. This was the personal motto he had lived by for a long time and it had served him well thus far. With his armor on he set to gathering his weapons, only to be interrupted by a low whine from Sintan. Realizing that she needed more than just the meager gruel they had been eating he dug up some dried meat he had stashed away, something else he had "borrowed" late one night during his first year here, and gave her a few pieces to hold her over. Now, with her occupied with that snack, Zeph once again went back to gathering up his weapons, scimitar on one hip, morning star on the other, bow and quiver across his back, and a couple daggers hidden away in boot sheaths. With everything secured in its proper place the scarred Goblin grabbed his cloak, draped it over his shoulders and pinned it in place with the bone cloak pin holding it in place. Now that he was physically ready for his day it was time to prepare on a more spiritual level. Taking a seat on the floor he watched Sintan eat the last bits of jerky, focusing his mind on the power of nature and the power it would share with him. (Preparing usual spells for the day)

Once Sin was finished with the last bit of meat Zeph rose slowly to his feet and with his companion at his heels headed out the door toward his morning class, making certain to pull his hood up to hide his face as usual. Once he arrived in the Lecture Hall he took his usual seat toward the back of the room and motioned for Sin to take her place near him.

Though he tried and tried to give Professor O'Leary his fullest attention he could not help but zone out as she droned on and on about environmental hazards and the like. He reminded himself that her experience and wisdom may prove invaluable, but he could not help but think that she could at least pepper the lectures with anecdotes of personal experiences and the like to make them more entertaining.

When the doors were flung open and another student came panting into the room Zeph welcomed the distraction and interruption. However his hopes for excitement were quickly dashed when the student explained the reasoning behind the intrusion. The imps are at it again huh? Nothing new there... His personal thoughts were rudely interrupted when the Elf-kin known as Darkon jumped up and began spewing some madness about some screw-brain plan he had. The Goblin merely drowned him out as he turned to Sintan and asked her, "Are you ready for this?" The wolf gave him a knowing look and stood up, waiting patiently for him to stand up as well, and they both headed for the open door.

Somehow he found himself toward the front of the group, close to the dancing Elf-kin much to his disgust. The three of them, the Goblin, wolf, and half-elf, arrived at the odd little picket line just in time to witness the pushy human monk open the door marked "FATE" and watched in horror as an enormous violet polyhedron came tumbling down the hall toward them. Usually his reflexes served him better, but today he managed to bump into Sintan as he attempted to dodge, knocking her over and still managing to get struck down by the die. Pain shot through his leg as a couple of the spikes from his morning star were forced through his armor and into his thin leg by the force of the fall, he could feel the blood slowly running down his leg under the armor. Sintan was up before him, and ever the loyal companion, was there to help Zeph to his feet, offering him a hand hold and just enough leverage to pull himself up off the floor.

As he pulled himself up from the ground a thought occurred to him, The imps are constantly revolting, and it seems every time it happens the administration and students always think violence is the only answer... It seems to me that these poor creatures are unhappy, perhaps even mistreated by these oppressive humans and such... Suddenly the imps didn't seem like an obstacle but instead kindred spirits. With this new outlook on things fresh in his mind Zeph began helping up a few of the wounded imps. Perhaps even this one, albeit foolish, act of kindness would even do more than any amount of violence. The whole time he was doing this he failed to realize that his hood had fallen down during his fall and his face was no longer hidden.

I know I said I'd post yesterday (maybe) but that obviously did not happen. Hopefully I can get something worked up this evening.

***I know I know, here it is Thursday and still no post from me, but rest assured I am working on one, actually hand writing it first in a notebook I picked up for just this purpose. That way I can write post even while away from my computer.

Zeph Blighthunter
Redwyrm Cafeteria and Dorms
Monday Night

Zeph limped off the training grounds, satisfied with how the day had gone thus far. He felt a strange sense of pride in the knowledge that he had been the only student to avoid capture, even in spite of his personal handicaps. In this blinding sense of pride Zeph had failed to even listen to the words of their instructor, caring only that he and Sintan had made it out of the ordeal okay.

The strange pair, goblin and wolf, made their way back to the cafeteria, grabbing a bowl of gruel, quite possibly leftover from the previous meal, but they would have to make due with what they had available to them for the time being. They sat alone in the back corner as usual, hood still drawn up to hide his face, cautious as ever to hide his true form. After a quick meal they left the cafeteria without so much as a glance to the other students and headed for their room.

The rooms were, to say the least, quite plain by the standards of many of the other students, but for a goblin they may as well have been 5 star accommodations. He had a bed, 4 walls, a roof that didn't leak, and even space for his personal belongings. Sintan, however, was still adjusting to sleeping indoors, and would fidget during most of the night in her makeshift bed of a "borrowed" pillow and blanket from the supply rooms. Zeph did what he could to comfort his only friend, ease her mind and help her sleep. Once she had finally calmed down and gone to sleep Zeph set about getting himself ready for bed.

For the first time since waking that morning he took off his cloak, revealing a hideously scarred face, even by goblin standards. Claw marks ran across most of his face, permanent scars of a conflict long passed but not forgotten. He laid in the bed, getting comfortable, and dozed off for a much needed night's rest.

~*~
The forest floor was beneath his feet again, yet the feet that carried him were not his own, he was much lower to the ground, on all fours. The first thing he really noticed was how vivid the scents around him seemed, everything flooded his nasal cavities at once, filling his mind with a smorgasbord of stimuli. He could smell the earth beneath his feet, the sweet smell of flowers in the distance, the pungent aroma of honey dripping from a hive high above him. He looked around, amazed at how clear things seemed. Sintan was, as usual, at his side, but instead of goblin and wolf they stood as equals, a pair of wolves running free.

Then a strong scent snapped him out of this almost euphoric state of calm, a scent he would know anywhere, the scent of goblins. A hunting party of half a dozen or more goblins suddenly jumped into the clearing around them, surrounding them with their superior numbers. They were quick to throw a net over Sintan, trapping her quickly, three of the goblins dragging her off into the woods as the rest closed in on Zeph menacingly. He fought as best he could, easily pulling the legs out from under one goblin and tearing his throat out with his sharp teeth. This move it seemed was to be his downfall though, as the remaining goblins quickly threw a net over him and drug him off in the same direction the others had taken Sintan. They arrived just in time to witness a goblin drive a dagger into her throat, killing her.

~*~

Zeph bolted up out of his slumber, drenched in a cold sweat, looking around desperately to make certain his friend was okay. He breathed a sigh of relief when he spotted her over in her corner looking up at him curiously. He slipped out of his bed and drug his own pillow over and laid down on the floor next to Sintan muttering, "...just a dream..." as he faded back out of consciousness again.

Cameron Grey
Bayris: Bazaar
6:20-ish?

As Cameron steps forward to attempt to defuse the situation he is caught off guard by a familiar smell, that of the sea, and quickly noticed a figure wearing a flowing black robe approaching. He was slightly shocked as the hooded figure lashed out and caused the guard to spew forth dark water with but a touch. It was clear that this was not the time to play peace keeper.

Then the panic started, people ran, screaming, trying to hide. Over the sounds of panic Cameron could hear not one, but at least two of his guild mates calling out, urging them all to join the fray, stand with the guards and protect the citizens.

This would be an ideal time to begin looting, but I have other duties to attend to, a shame really...

Stepping forward, flanking a hooded figure if at all possible without incurring attacks of opportunity, Cameron draws his rapier and strikes at the nearest foe in one fluid motion. (Flat-footed, if possible, thanks to Flick of the Wrist).

If only I had worn my armor today, if things get too ugly I may have to withdraw, tis better to retreat and live than stand and die..

((Just for easy calculating, that's +10 (+5BAB, +5Dex) to attack, 1d6+1(magic weapon)+3(int bonus, if target is not immune to sneak attacks or crits)+ another 2d6 if sneak attack is applicable))

Cameron Grey
Bayris: Bazaar
roughly 6:15-6:20

Cameron had been keeping a close eye on the situation, watching to see how the Sil handled things. When it became clear that things may be heading toward violence he made his way over toward the two, arriving shortly after their gisalko companion had stepped in. Straightening his clothes and dusting off slightly he extended a polite hand to the noble, with a courteous bow before stepping between the nobleman and his guild mates and introducing himself. (Diplomacy Attempt)

"Good evening sir, my name is Cameron Grey, and I, along with these other fine gentlemen, am a guildsman of the Crimson Blades. I understand you have expressed some interest in my associate's furry friend, and while I fully understand that a man of your obvious wealth and status (flattery never hurts) is not used to hearing no, might I humbly suggest that you reconsider. This particular wolf belongs to a Sylvari, as you can clearly see; and as we all know, the Sylvari travel with wild animals (play on the man's obvious racism to hopefully appeal to his better judgement). We would not want a feral wolf to be left alone with your lovely daughter, now would we? (more flattery). If you are stone set against getting your daughter a new pet I could gladly suggest a few local animal trainers here within the Market Quarter who could help you find a much more exotic and interesting pet for her."

Should this attempt at calming the stuck up noble fail, Cameron stands ready, though making no obviously threatening movements toward his weapons. (Basically, just prepared without making it obvious, so as not to be caught flatfooted and unaware. +13 Diplomacy btw, because of my ranks in Bluff, could have been +15 if I had only taken one more rank in Sense Motive.)

Ever watchful of his surroundings Cameron was quick to notice the arrival of a couple his guild mates. After all, it was always nice to have a general idea of where some extra muscle was in case he found himself in trouble. He made a mental note of who he had spotted thus far and their general expertise, liking to always know what assistance may be readily available to him. However, Cameron makes no attempts to interact with the others, not wanting to draw too much attention, as people usually got suspicious if a group gathered around here.

Subject: Ah the Carnival.

Cameron Grey
City State of Bayris: Bazaar
Mid to Late Afternoon

As this was not Cameron's first year in Bayris this was not his first time attending the Carnival of Masks, it was however his first time attending the Carnival with a purpose other than looking for suckers willing to lose money to him. This year he was attending the festivities as an official member of the Crimson Blades, and as such felt at least slightly obligated to be on better behavior than he had previous years.

These affairs were always a bittersweet time for Cameron, money was always changing hands, and more times than not it was leaving his hands. For this very reason he had chosen to leave the majority of his currents funds in his room, as well as most of his other possessions. This evening he was wearing his finest clothes, complete with jewelry and signet ring, his trusty Gloves, just in case there was need for his movements to be that much more fluid, and at his hip he wore his rapier, proudly displayed for all to see. He also had his daggers on his person, hidden as usual, and a small handful of gold coins (150g maybe) jingling in his belt pouches.

As the hours passed Cameron kept himself busy by moving through the endless crowds of locals and tourists alike, he carried himself with a grace and air of pride that seemed to match his finery, though only those who knew him would ever know the truth that he was more or less dirt poor at this point. All the while he made a conscious effort to behave himself, fighting his usual urges to slip things out of the pockets of those around him. Last time he had been caught he had been warned, or perhaps threatened would be a better word actually, not to let it happen again.

As the various merchants and peddlers hawked their goods he would look over the items displayed, feigning interest in an item or two every once in a while, then pretending someone had called his name from somewhere within the crowds and walk away from the stands, empty handed and still holding onto the money he had been carrying all day.

As the sun began to sink lower in the sky and dusk set in Cameron made his way to the center of the Market where a group of bards, acrobats, and various other performers had set up little shows, doing whatever it was they did best for tips thrown at their feet. Cameron found a place against the side of a shop and leaned against the wall watching the various performers, his fingers tracing along the intricate decoration of his clothing and rapier out of habit, something he did to keep his hands busy and out of trouble.

((Biggest reason I've chosen to actually behave rather than pick pockets is because we were asked to avoid anything that would require rolls to be made, that and getting caught would probably not be the best way to start the game off. Otherwise he'd probably have snatched coins from every 6th person or so..))

I'm sorry to say that as of this point in my life I do not have the time, nor energy, to devote to running a game. That said I am placing this game on an indefinite hiatus until things calm down in my life. When and if I reopen the game I will first PM those of you who have already been involved to see if you are still interested. Again, I am sorry, but I am sure you will all understand that sometimes RL just gets to be too much.

Those of you who are playing in other games with me, this does not mean I will not be playing, so we will still be able to play in other games together, just not one I will be DMing any time in the near future.

Zeph Blighthunter
Tann's Field of Death
Week 1: Monday Afternoon

As much as he hated to have a human telling him what to do Zeph placed any unnecessary items over on the empty shelves where the monk had indicated, grumbling under his breath in Druidic the whole time of course, he had learned during his last year that the dancing Elf-kin knew his native language and had since made it a point to say things in a less well known language if he didn't want them overheard. Since he had no idea what to expect during this training period he motioned for Sintan to come close to him as he crept toward the back of the group, getting as far from the Humans, Halflings, and Elf-kin as he could while remaining in the area.

The minute it went dark Zeph knew something was wrong, usually he had no trouble seeing in the dark, yet in this darkness he found himself as lost as a human would be. He timidly reached out to where he remembered Sintan being, making sure she was still close by. When the screams started he knew what was coming, war cries like these were something he had heard many times growing up, Bugbears.. no doubt about it. Sintan's reaction served only to confirm that he needed to worry, he could feel the wolf tense up and could hear her low growls, she obviously smelled something she did not like. His suspicions were only confirmed as the darkness faded and he spotted the troop of Bugbears advancing menacingly toward himself and the other students. He gave Sintan a quick pat on the back, whispering to her in Druidic, "Be careful my friend.." as he backed away even further.

To his surprise he found himself in leather armor he had not been wearing and holding a shortbow in his hand. Reaching back he found that he had a quiver of arrows on his back as well and took aim at the Goblinoid closest to himself and Sintan, letting an arrow fly toward his target.

((Declaring Dodge against the same Bugbear I'm attacking, raising AC by 1 point in the event he reaches me, or happens to resort to ranged combat as well. Base Attack is +0, but Dex is +4, so that would be +4 to attack with the bow. If engaged in melee he'll likely drop the bow, pull his morningstar and attempt to flank with Sintan if she stays close enough. If engaged in melee by a foe other than my current target I will declare my Dodge bonus against the foe attacking me. If push comes to shove I do have magical options available to me as well, though they're not likely to be a huge help against roughly a dozen foes.))

I almost find it ironic that I made a nautically themed character without being fully aware of the undertones that would be present in the game. Worked out nicely though I suppose, my character already has experience on ships as per his story. (and that would be something other characters would know anyway, so I'm not giving any major details away that could be used for meta-gaming)

Subject: Well Tann

The wolf is a druid's animal companion, and as such does have some sort of bond to the druid, Zeph in this case, though nowhere near what a familiar and mage have. I guess I could re-read the info in the PHB and see what I can find after another read through.

Edit: After a read through I noticed that the class description had very little information, only that a druid could use handle animal as a free action even without having ranks in the skill. Reading over the skill I found that handling requires that the animal be trained for said trick or purpose. And since I didn't actually take any of that into account during character creation (only the free bonus trick for being a druid's companion) I have to assume that I've done little to know other training with the wolf. And as such trying to get her to attack without her knowing the attack trick or fighting purpose would be considered 'pushing' her, which is a DC 25 Handle check, and with no ranks in handle and no cha bonus its unlikely that I'd hit a 25 on anything.
So unless of course the DM is willing to allow an edit saying the wolf has at least been trained for the general purpose of fighting (as described in Handle Animal description) then we'll just have to assume Sintan would react as a typical wolf would when threatened and be more or less unwilling to follow commands other than the 'seek' bonus trick I listed.

I have a couple questions I would like answered so I know exactly how I intend to react to this mysterious encounter.

First off, is my darkvision useful during the period of darkness before the appearance of the bugbears? By this I mean can I see well enough to find a hiding place to strike from while its dark. I realize the bugbears also have darkvision which means if I can see they can too, but I'm not a rogue for nothing.

Secondly, I'm still a little uneducated on exactly how the wolf, Sintan, interacts with Zeph. Would a simple verbal command be enough to get a point across, such as "be careful, or watch yourself"?

I was referring to the halflings, the general concept behind them reminds me of Palom and Porom from FFIV. Inexperienced twins, one black mage, one white mage.
