Topic: FFd20 Crimson Falcons QA take 2
Subject: sorry!

I would like to apologize about the wait. I've started a new job, and had my daughter the past 2 weekends, so I have not had quite the free time I had before. I want you all to know I am, at this very moment, working on a post to get this moving again. In fact it may be finished and posted before you even see this post.

I look forward to moving forward and hopefully keeping this going for a while.

Topic: Final Fantasy d20: Crimson Falcons (take 2)
Subject: *casts "summon wall o' text"*

The hume, Gelion, true to the curious nature of his people, decides to take a moment to check the bodies of their fallen foes for anything of value, while also examining them as he found it especially curious that he had recognized some of their speech as an off-shoot of the tongue of his most-hated foes, the Goblins. Amongst the blood he found that the two that had not cast spells each carried simple flat stone clubs, which look almost as of they would break if you were to hit something the wrong way, and they each also carried 2 long, slender, pointed lengths of rock about 3 feet in length. It would seem these were stone javelins of a sort, which would likely explain how the injured miner had a piece of stone break off in his shoulder.

The last of the foes had a similar club, though his was ornately carved and seemed to be of sturdier construction than the other two. He carried no javelins like the other two had. In the dim light of the mining helmet the young archer almost missed a small satchel tied to the caster. The pouch appeared to be made of stretched skin much like the wing of a bat, and was dark in color, hard to spot in the shadows against the violet flesh of the foe. The pouch contained several rough samples of stone, ore, and unpolished gems, in total 6 "stones" of unknown worth or value.

A quick glance of the anatomy of the more intact one, the one with his arrow buried in its eye, revealed that they shared many common physical attributes with the surface goblins, but these appeared to have evolved even further for life deep under the surface where no natural light ever reached. Their eyes were small and beady, their pigmentation allowing them to blend seamlessly into the blackness, large ears which aided in hearing, and the flat, bat-like nose for smelling out sources of food or water. Like surface goblins they had long limbs, hunched posture, and a multitude of sharp teeth made for tearing and ripping. They likely shared a common ancestor with the surface goblins, but seemed to be different as well. It wasn't too much of a leap for the archer to assume with their reaction to the lights, and the structure of the one good eye that these foes were not fans of bright light.

((2 standard mere clubs, 4 stone javelins (improvised thrown weapon), a masterwork mere club, and the satchel of stones. The masterwork club and satchel contents are likely the only items of any real value found...))

Lini, eager to move on and put his precious pistol to another test, scoops up the sunrod nearest to him and strolls to the tunnel on the left wall. He doesn't even have to step into the mouth of this tunnel, as he could see the end from the opening, this tunnel had likely just been started just before the miners broke through.

Moving straight along that wall he heads into the tunnel in the upper-left corner, which does not appear to end in a few yards, as he cannot see beyond the range of the light he carried in his hands. The lights on the helmets of his comrades helped to light the tunnel even further as they crawled behind him. This tunnel went on for a while and then split into two branching tunnels. The tunnel to the right was just as dark as the tunnel they had been crawling through for a while, the tunnel to the left however seemed to be illuminated by a soft greenish pulsing glow. Lini's observant gaze counts at least 2, possibly more, shadows crossing the light. Something is walking between the source of the glow and where the Falcons are crawling.

((Obviously you can head any way you like, left toward the glow, right into the darkness, or even back track to another tunnel before heading further down the paths presented here... Up to you. Since there was no specific mention of which tunnel you would be heading down I simply went with the closest tunnel and went clock-wise from there.))

As mentioned earlier, there is also an SRD for those without the books or pdfs. Be forewarned it is incomplete and some information, namely backgrounds, archetypes, and sub-races, have been omitted, requiring access to books/pdfs for all the options.

And from what I have seen of your characters in the past Nimu, Archfey Warlock is probably right up your alley. (unfortunately the SRD only has details for fiendish 'locks though)

I'll try to get a character thrown together asap. My weekend is a little tied up with me having my daughter this weekend, but I'll do what I can when I can. If anyone cares I'm going to be rolling a Half-Elf Rogue, so I can handle all the tricky things like locks and such, and be a striker style combatant.

Barbarian is still a class, with the archetypes of Berserker (iirc) and Totem Barb. Berserker gets more rage bonuses if I am remembering right, and Totem Barb gets some animalistic abilities depending on the totem animal...

Is it safe to assume the more magically inclined races like Elf, Gnome, and especially Tiefling also carry their own stigmas that could prove difficult in a setting like this?

I'm leaning toward either Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster, a touch of magic, but magic I could deny by being good with a sword...

As for alignment, I tend toward neutrality anyway, so I could swing good or evil... maybe a neutral voice of reason for an evil party, or the rebel in a good party... either way...

I gather from the setting blurb that arcane magic is kinda taboo, or does that carry over to divine magic as well?

Loot now, loot later, it makes little difference to be honest. If you are going to go tunnel crawling though you'll need to decide which of the 6 tunnels you'll be going through first...

Subject: end combat, what next?

With only one target remaining the Viera once again nocks an arrow and lets it fly, this arrow seems to suddenly veer off course though as it gets close to the creature, missing it entirely.

The creature appears to take a moment to take stock of the situation, considering if it should stay and fight or die with his comrades. The gestures and chanting of another spell being cast seem to indicate that he has decided it best to stand and fight. "Ogaac haakaan sharaan ac agal'dakaan!," he shouts and from his outstretched hand streaks a glowing chunk of stone, striking Gelion in the chest. His armor blunts a lot of the impact, but it still catches him off guard and he has to take a moment to gather his breath.

Lini then whips around dramatically, lining up the sights of his revolver and holds his breath for just a moment to get the best shot he can line up. He squeezes the trigger and the projectile finds its mark, burrowing into the creature's skull with a brutal spatter of blood, bone, and brain matter decorating the wall behind him.

With all enemies down, the group is allowed a moment to regroup and take stock of what has just happened. The bodies lie crumpled where they fell, or what was left of them at least and the stone floor and walls are stained with freshly spilled blood.

Nam speaks up, "Good job recruits, it appears that even short a recruit you three can handle yourselves in a fight, just don't get cocky as we don't know what else lurks down these other tunnels."

It is then that you realize how odd it seems that even with all the noise of gunshots being fired off in the cavern no other hostiles showed up to investigate. You reason that if there are more fights to be had the enemies definitely know you are here, and will likely be prepared for you.

The cavern itself is rather unremarkable, and the tunnels leading out (excluding the one you came in though) are all sized for the shrieking purple assailants, only Lini can fit without having to crawl.

((What would you like to do next? As for the combat, Suki failed to hit AC due to the caster having cast Wind Armor before the group ever reached the cavern, this explains why the arrow was blown aside before striking. The enemy used a spell to hurl an earth aspected elemental missile at Gelion, striking for 3 damage (it's only a cantrip after all). Lini's Focused Aim allowed him to strike for additional damage, killing the foe in one shot, thus the dramatic gory mess.))

Subject: update again

Since Gelion is last in the initiative order I went and ahead and resolved the actions of the posts I have gotten, as it was possible the thing may be dead before Gelion's next turn. I'll be posting the end of this combat shortly and more update to move things forward.

Nomad I do not mean to leave you out of the action, it just happened the action was over before Gelion's turn came around again, but hey that means more arrows left in your quiver unused.

As combat has resolved Gelion is now at 5/10 health, this means he is the first to meet the criteria to be able to use a Limit Break!

Xai silently agreed to play along, work meant money, and money meant being able to eat meals he doesn't scrounge up in the trash.

When the Dwarf came back and approached Xai followed the lady's lead and ordered something for breakfast, "Bread please, with jam if you have any."

X marks where the bodies of the fallen foes lie. Only #1 remains, and even though it is Nam's turn at the top of initiative he will be sticking back to see how you three will handle the situation rather than rush in and engage the surviving foe.

Subject: UPDATE!!

Once the lights came back on, so to say, Sukini sprung into action, nocking an arrow and firing at the creature closest to her. The arrow finds its target, but oddly enough does not seem to puncture the creature's skin. The creature on the left side of the cavern then yells something, "Haar daan kec-rhekaar!" and rushes at Nam, swinging the stone club he wields at the Varg. Nam skillfully sidesteps the blow and counters the attack with a brutal kick to the creature's chest, the sound of ribs cracking echoes in the cavern and the creature staggers back.

The creature in the far right corner makes some motions with his long arms and yells something, "Or tal'duul daan daararaar!", apparently invoking a spell, yet nothing seems to happen.

Lini, always eager to use his Awesome Pistol takes aim on the creature that Nam has so skillfully struck and his shot connects with the creature's already damaged chest and the bullet tears through the dark violet skin and the foe crumples to the ground, dark blood oozing from the wound as the sound of the gunshot still echoes in the cave.

The creature that Sukini had already shot at opens its toothy mouth and lets out a painfully loud shriek which echoes through the cavern. Gelion manages to bring his hands to his ears before too much damage is done to his hearing, and the mining helmet helps insulate Sukini from the brunt of the effect. However neither Nam or Lini are facing the direction of this foe and are caught off guard and take the full damage.

Once the creature closes his mouth and stops the shrieking Gelion lines up his bow, takes aim, and fires two arrows in rapid succession at the creature, the first arrow, like Sukini's, does not appear to pierce the creature's hide, but the second arrow finds a softer target and is buried in the creature's eye, and it immediately drops lifeless to the cavern floor.

Just as suddenly as they were dampened the lights in the mining helmets flicker back to life, the focused beams of light produced by the magic flames illuminating the cavern in addition to the sunrods.

((Overall, good round of combat, with 2/3s of the threat neutralized. Nam scored a solid crit on the counter attack, which softened up the target nicely for Lini to send it straight to Hell. The enemy spellcaster actually missed with his spell, so nothing happened. Gelion and Suki made their saves for half damage against the shriek, while Nam and Lini both failed, taking full damage. Even with DR against piercing damage the sheer power of Gelion's shots was enough to put the creature down, but only because Suki had managed to do some damage with her shot. Gelion and Suki took 2 damage, while Lini and Nam took 3 which I will update the QA to reflect the changes in HP. Gelion recognizes the words shouted as a dialect of Goblin, but he cannot make out all the words, it is clear though that these things are, at the very least, related to Goblins. The helmets are now lit again as the effect that darkened them only lasts for 1 round.))

Just so everyone is aware, in an attempt to keep the game moving forward I will be playing Kamina's part as an NPC if there is no post by Friday evening. I'm eager to see the game move forward and do not want to see it crawl to a stop just as it gets going like last time. Once we can wrap up matters in the mines we can introduce Impulse's character, and if need be, write out the Viera, as much as I would prefer to keep the ninja in and have a party of 4 again...

Subject: hmm

I spent many of my formative years playing console RPGs, starting with the original 8-bit Final Fantasy on the NES, and later into the PS era Final Fantasy games. A lot of my inspiration comes from there. Later, time spent playing Diable, World of Warcraft, and other similar games has proven influential in both character design and quest planning.

I also draw character inspiration from favorite characters in television, books, movies, etc. I'm presently, an internally, tossing around varied ideas to incorporate the crew of Serenity into a Fantasy setting, perhaps first as a traveling band akin to gypsies, then perhaps acquiring a ship and acting as pirate-esque characters, and eventually into an airship or similar mode of transportation.

Subject: Initiative

I did not include initiative order in my update, so here it is.

Nam: 19a
Sukini: 19b (Nam's Init mod is higher, so he acts first)
Foe 3: 15
Foe 1: 13
Lini: 11a
Foe 2: 11b (again, Lini's Init mod is higher, he acts first)
Gelion: 6

Post order doesn't matter so much, and I will update the round once everyone posts.
