Topic: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain - Fizzled
Subject: Vellastion

Val pushed his plate across the table toward the half-orc and replied, "By all means, do enjoy it." With that he rose to his feet and gave a polite bow, "Now gentlemen, if you will excuse me, I'd like to get some air before heading in for the night, I must get 8 hours of rest before we leave, so I intend to turn in early." Without awaiting a reply from the others he made sure his hood was up well over his head to cast a deep shadow and hide his face and headed out the door in search of something to satisfy the unnatural hunger that gripped his body.

((Looking for stray dogs, cats, birds, rats, anything he can catch alive and get some blood out of, he'll be certain to dispose of any corpses so as not to draw too much attention from anyone. As much as he hates to use the ability, if he must he'll use darkness to make sure he isn't seen.))

Subject: Pathfinder is...

To put it as simply as possible, Pathfinder is DnD 3.75, its a d20 ruleset by Paizo that is a modified, and somewhat higher powered system based on 3.5. The races tend to have better racial mods, the classes have more options and powers, feats progress faster, and so forth. So if you are familiar with DnD 3.x you could very easily pick up Pathfinder and know what was going was.

With the immediate course of action settled upon the tiefling settled sipped on his drink and waited for their meal to arrive. Upon its arrival he tipped the waitress a few coppers for her time and set about picking at the meal. If anyone was watching closely enough they'd notice that he ate very little if any of the meal, almost as if eating anything at all made him sick to his stomach. The truth of the matter was though that his need for blood was getting the better of him and this normal food was just a meager tease against so unnatural and vile a hunger. He resolved to go out that night, before going to bed and see if he could catch himself something to feed on, even if just a rat in a filthy alleyway.

As comfortable as the accommodations had been Gronz was glad to be free of that mansion. He had been itching for some action, and they were bound to find some soon now that they were back on the road. As suggested he took a place toward the front, not because it was a good idea, not because he felt the need to protect his more fragile companions, but because the more of them that were behind him the less they'd be trying to chat his ears off.

As the hours passed Gronz kept a steady pace, always keeping his honed senses fully aware of his surrounding. He may have been a low life city thug, but that didn't mean he thought the wilds were without their own dangers as well.

The cleric nodded in understanding and replied, "Now it is you who misreads my statement, I never objected to leaving first thing in the morning, the more daylight we have for the trek then the longer the Light can watch over us." Val's deity was an obscure one, few people knew the truth of the glory of Elishar, few knew the warmth that came of worshiping the one true god (as is the belief of the followers of Elishar). The most his companions truly knew at this point was that he regularly referred to his god as the Light.

Nick took the advice of his knightly companion and kept his eyes and ears open and ready should another attack be made against him. If these Death Corps guys were nearly as dangerous as all the cursing made them out to be it would do them no good to have him struck down during the early phases of an assault. Keeping his shield raised should he need to block another bolt he steps up close to his companion in an attempt to block the line of fire as their companion deals with the lock on the trapdoor.

Val looks to the Half-orc and replies, "There is something to be said about your enthusiasm, but no amount of confidence can replace skill and preparation. You would do well to remember the virtues of patience and humility. And another thing, what do you mean the treasure will be yours? You planning on being the only one to survive this endeavor, or do you plan to double-cross us when all is said and done?"

Ever since his arrival in Gilford the cleric of The Light had not said much, choosing instead to let the more chatty among them do the talking as various townsfolk were questioned. So many conflicting rumors circulated about this mountain, so many possibilities as to what awaited their little group of treasure hunters.

As they gathered around the table at the Unicorn Run for the last time he did the best he could to quiet the voices hissing at him in the back of his head, "You know this is crazy, you're all going to die in that mountain, and for what? You really think people will look at you differently just because you succeed at this? NO, you will always be a monster in their eyes, embrace that fact and abandon this fool's mission!" Val shook his head vigorously trying to shake the voice loose, causing his hood to slip just enough for the others at the table to see the small black horns that crested his pale brow. Quickly he drew his hood back up, hoping that no one had seen anything and shrugged as the other holy man asked if they had a plan. "My only plan is to survive this, if we can manage that much then I'd say we're doing well enough."

Nodding that he understood Echo also began urging the slaves to move forward, time was of the utmost importance. Giving his best smile and his most sincere tone he assured the slave mob that they would be fine so long as they continued to move away from the conflict at hand.

I was just about to mention the Quicken Spell feat myself, with this feat you can technically cast 2 spells in one round, and I think there is a twin spell feat or something like that if I recall correctly, but that's more 2 of the same spell cast at the same time than it is 2 spells in a round.

There are also a few (very few) spells that have a casting time of one swift action, you could technically cast one of those spells and then a standard spell.

It would seem that interest in the game has waned, really is a shame too, I had such high plans for this game. If you no longer intend to post then please let me know, if you do wish to continue then please post. If nothing substantial has happened by Monday I'm just gonna declare the game fizzled and attempt to start over fresh rather than scrap the plans I had already.

As nice as these meals had been Gronz was ready to get things underway. He had only halfway listened to the conversation going on around him, not even entirely sure on the details that he had so blatantly chosen to ignore; besides, one of the bookworms was likely to have all the information they would need. The half-orc ate this meal quietly, and with no better manners than the previous meals, adding nothing new to the conversations going on around him. Words were not his strong point, smashing things was.

Subject: Nick

The Cleric thought briefly on the question placed before, "I do not know how much good they will do, but I can imbue one of you with greater strength, I have a protective spell, and can bestow a touch of divine guidance to one of us." He thought over the possibilities, and added, "Grimm is likely the best candidate for the divine boost to strength, the harder he can hit the better. You, good knight, might benefit from the protection I can offer, and our little friend may just be able to put that touch of guidance to good use, the more likely he is to slip one of those daggers into a weak spot the better off we all are. However, each spell I cast beforehand is one lest spell I can use to cure us after the fact, so we need to keep that in mind as well."

When the suggestion came up that one of them should take the high ground, namely himself, Nick pondered on it before replying, "As nice as it may be to remain out of harm's way, I have no bow, and my only attack spell isn't suited for casting when you three are in melee with the targets. I suppose I could make an attempt at it, but I'm far from skilled in archery."

((Spells described are Bull's Strength, Shield of Faith, and Guidance. Attack spell is Sound Burst, effects all within a 10 ft radius, and is close range anyway. As for sniping, Nick has no ranged weapon, and firing into melee without proper training could end up doing more harm than help with the penalties applied for it.))

If nothing else, you could also rule that we get a reflex save against melee attacks to avoid them (or half the damage) similar to traps or other effects. That would play off neither AC or DR, and make for more survivable combat situations in my opinion. It also adds an almost cinematic quality to the flow of combat, giving the impression that a quick moving character can dodge blows. A bonus could even be given on the save when fighting defensively to show that the character is more apt to notice an attack coming and be better able to dodge (or parry) it.

From within the chaotic cover of the slave mob Echo begins the motions and chants necessary to cast Magic Missle, knowing that no amount of speed or parrying will be of much help to this "White Blade" as the slaves had called him.

((Not much going on here really, just casting the spell, all the while hoping that doing it from within the mob will prevent him from becoming a target to those fast strikes))

Subject: Regarding AC

AC is merely a measure of how difficult it is to strike you. You traded off the AC bonus from armor for DR, which is a much more realistic system if I do say so myself. Since when does wearing a suit of Full Plate make you harder to hit? If anything it slows you down and makes you easier to strike, but it affords protection from most of the harm associated with the attack you received. So yes, with a lower AC we will be hit more often, but with the DR we will be hit for much less damage than what we would have otherwise.

Think about it, if my character were to simply be wearing armor using the standard AC rules, when he is hit the blow would be devastating to his single HD, whereas with the DR from the armor (and racial) he will not take near the beating from a single blow.

Welcome, new friend, to the Inn. You will find that this place practically oozes with creativity, as many of us (myself included) fancy ourselves as writers. Not to mention the amount of creativity and work that goes into the roleplay around here.

Oh and before I forget, you'll be needing this later... *hands a large towel* You'll know what its for before long.

I was actually thinking more like a tank and a rogue, someone to scout ahead, disarm any traps the warlock is bound to have guarding his treasure, and other such rogue like things.

My character will be progressing as a sorcerer as well, assuming he survives to his next level or 2.

So basically what we need is someone to soak up damage, and someone else to deal it out in quick bursts huh?

Subject: Gronz

After about an hour of wandering the grounds, getting some fresh air and working off some of the calories he had taken on at their morning meeting, Gronz headed back into the mansion and took a look around, half exploring and half looking for loose objects that would be small enough to pocket and not be missed to terribly much. (If he believes he is not being watched and that an object won't be missed right away he'll pocket it and then try to get it to his pack in the bedroom he had slept in. The actual value of the object is of little importance to him, just that he feels entitled to whatever he can get his hands on. If nothing seems plausible then he'll abandon this course of action and continue wandering for the time being.)

When the servant informs him that the next meal will soon begin the half-orc chooses to pass on washing up and instead heads directly to the terrace (only after dropping off anything he may have picked up) for their meal and meeting. Taking a seat he grunts as the self proclaimed heretic makes a fool of himself and then answers the question himself, "I'm up for the challenge, its not like I have anything better going on anyway."

Everything seemed to be going smoothly up until they were about halfway through the alley, then Echo had to flinch as what appeared to be a shard of metal buzzed by him. I knew this seemed to easy, now we've got this guy to deal with.

Diplomatic solutions seemed unlikely as this man already had shown his hostile regard for them, it seemed he was being paid to undo what they had worked so hard to do themselves. If diplomacy had been a possibility before, it sure wasn't after the half-orc stepped up menacingly and seemed almost to growl at the new comer.

Echo decided instead to brace himself for the fight that was sure to come and assumed a defensive stance and stepped back just to be sure he was out of range to be able to cast anything he may need to cast.

Subject: Let's see if we can't get this ball rolling again...

((I'm going to NPC Dreen for the time being, if he comes back he can take over again, if he isn't back before I get ready to start the next mission he'll just be reassigned to a new group within the guild and be explained away..))

As the group was exiting the workshop a strange call arose into the silence of the town around them, a call Nefarion recognized as a signal he and Rath'Sharr had long since agreed on should they need to get the others attention. Scanning the area from which the sound had seemed to come, he only barely spotted his companion signing something to him, though the details were lost on him between the distance between them and the light of the sun still shining overhead. He did however manage to gather that his companion had spotted something in the distance and was going to investigate further.

Turning to the rest of the group he announced that Rath had apparently seen something and they should also head in the general direction of the forest where he had indicated in case things got out of hand. Rushing to the edge of the forest Nef once again spotted his rogue counterpart, having a much easier time seeing into the shadowy cover provided by the trees. Pushing on they manage to catch up to Rath in a small clearing where he has apparently found the stolen tools already abandoned on the ground.

Something seems off about the whole situation, but before anyone can realize that they have walked right into a trap they are bombarded by magical energies that assault their minds. The two Drow and the Tiefling seem to suffer no adverse effects from the spell, owed to either spell resistance or successful saves. The Hobgoblin and Human however reel in pain as they are subjected to overwhelming mental stress. (9 points of nonlethal damage each)

Whipping around, you spot the source of the attack, a figure clad in what appears to be ninja garb, but is a deep purple rather than the normal black one would expect. Flowing from his face is a bright blue scarf tied so as to hide the lower half of his face. What is visible almost resembles an elf in the point of the ears and the fine features, but the Drow are quick to notice that this thief is not an elf, his oversized eyes are a quick giveaway of that.

With a hiss he addresses the group, "The humanses were not satisfied with destroying the forest, now they sends assassins in too?!" With that he leaps to the next tree and vanishes into the canopy waiting for his next chance to strike.

((Not ideal, and sure not how I expected the encounter to start, but I failed to account for the Drow Spell Resistance when designing the encounter, live and learn right? And yes, for the encounter I did stage you all in a pretty close group for dramatic effect, not nearly as dramatic as I had hoped though. Anyhow, your thief has been found, and he's apparently a slippery one. Have at it!))
