Topic: Continuing Where We Last Left Off
Subject: we don't need no...

Introductions went around the table, each showing his expertise... sort of. Adrian was not one to pass judgement, although it was obvious who the power in this outfit was.

The one called Arien, which Adrian could not help but notice was a very powerful-sounding name, looked to be the most fit of the group. They would see much combat together. The gruff one, Char, looked a sturdy second in terms of physical prowess. Adrian bet the two of them could teach him much in the ways of battle. He would press for a sparring match later on.

The young lad Dapple seemed to be more talk than bite, and didn't appear to have any obvious strengths. A diplomat perhaps? An entertainer?

The Gladiator would be an asset, but little more. Pit fighters typically lack the finesse and intellegence required to reach their full potential. Adrian would have to coach that out of him later.

Dwarves had earned their place among the strong and combat-wise men. Adrian had no reason to believe this one was any different.

And then there was the epitome of everything the militant wizard hated. Physically weak, mentally... unstable, and all guesses were that he hid behind magic and used it as an excuse. Bah! Adrian decided it better for the mission if he simply hung around the others and avoided this one.

When Arien claimed the leadership position, two thoughts immediately came to mind.

1) Why do we need a leader? A leader cannot make the decisions of others, and only hampers the effectiveness of the individual. Perhaps that philosophy, one which he was quite vocal about, contributed to his imperial exile.

2) What a surprise... the pit fighter wanted someone to hold his hand and lead him. *sigh* such a waste of muscle.

With that said and done, they were treated to a treat of divination. Finally, something I'm used to he thought to himself. If there could be a number placed on the various divinatory maps he had seen in his life... it would be quite large indeed.

He made mental notes as he always had, until Dapple spoke perhaps the most exciting comment of the night. "Why the hell aren’t you simply sending in the troops? Reds and Greens don’t just decide to desert together. If they are working together, someone’s ordering them."

Adrian knew the answer: Nobody could stand up to the Imperials. At least not yet. They had to weakened from the inside. Luckily, they were destroying themselves quite nicely from the inside by expelling people like himself.

Thankfully, his host came up with a more tactful answer. Adrian wasn't good with tact. He always cut class when it was time for charm and diplomacy lessons.

"Well," Adrian spoke up, "When do we leave? The Reds are the kind that get stronger the less they do, and by the looks of it they aren't doing much. We should go now."

Dime was used to this. His cover was blown, and the guns came out. This was definately the first time that he had been accused of being with another undercover guy though, when *his* cover was the one being blown.

Dime nodded to all the suggestion.

"Yep, I'm armed and ready to get out of here. Lord knows who or what else is after us now."

The red haired one was definately undercover for some agency. He showed no sign of surprise, and was willing to turn on his so called teammates. He is probably one of the others the Republic mentioned would be with me.

It was times like this Dime wished he had some information on the other undercovers. But, he knew that it was for everyone's safety. He would inform the soldier of his true identity when they were safer.

"Good thing I travel light" he smirked, and ducked in his room. A single suitcase lay there with instruments packed in it. He threw the sliverhorn in and slammed it shut, rushing back to rejoin his companions.

"If I lose this I might as well be dead. My music is my life." With a wink, he dashed off with the others toward the back.

Stardate: 2366.10.31
USS Discovery, Bridge - 1845

“Damage Report!” Vic screamed out to the TAC station as the red lights flared around the back of the ship, indicating a direct hit.

His response was not friendly. “We lost a good chunk of the hull. Engineering is on it now. All weapons still go”

“Like hell we’re on it! we’ve lost half our crew, we can’t keep the weapons and shields up, plus repair the fraggin ship at the same time!” came a quick response from the Engy station.

“Cut it out, we’re on the same team.” Vic responded, grabbing the intercom. “Anyone whos passed an engineering course in their life go down and help repair the hull!” The sensors on the ship showed a good deal of people responding. He knew he was leaving most of the ship unable to function, but a mostly-useless ship was still a ship.

Another minute of firefighting went down between the still unidentified hostile and the Discovery.

“Anyone know what the hell this thing is yet?” He yelled out, but received only a slew of negatives in response.

“Weapons down sir! We can’t return fire” TAC called out.

“How long until we can fix them?” White responded.

“Sir, unless you plan on ramming them, we have to run.”

White got an idea. “What’s our shields at?”

“40% sir. I’m trying to route power from the guns to strengthen them now. Give me 30.”

White wasn’t happy. “You have 15. Another hull breach and we’re dead. Does that ship have any shields?”

TAC sighed… “No sir, it’s just jamming our fire and intercepting our missiles.”

“That’s good. Get all shield power to the front of the ship. Helm, route a course straight at it, ramming speed. See if it can intercept a missile this size.”

“Sir, we’ll die, the hull can’t take it!” came the cry from Engineering.

Victor nodded. “We’re dead anyway. We have no weapons and we can’t make a jump. Gentlemen, it’s been a pleasure serving with you. Engage at my mark.”

“5…”

“4…”

“Shields routed, sir. Godspeed.” Came the voice behind him.

“3…”

“2…”

As he was about to utter the final count, everything went black, and the normal lights of the holodeck flickered on.

“Dr. White, it is currently 2030 hours. Your presence was requested in exactly 0030 hours, sir. I shall record your progress for this session.”

Vic pounded his palm with a fist. “Damn! I was so close. Thank you computer. That is all.”

The door to the holodeck slid open, and Vic quickly left the area. He had to make it back to Sick Bay and check up before he went to the dinner. Vic walked in to see Cinna still on duty.

“Take a break once in a while Cinna, you’re making me look bad.” He chuckled, but with a bit of seriousness.

“I suppose you’re right. Nothing interesting has happened all day. I might go play around a bit in the holodeck. They have a new parasailing sim over there.”

Vic cocked his head. “You into parasailing?”

Cinna laughed, “Lord no, I hate heights. That’s why I use the sim…” he smiled a bit, but couuldn’t hold it back anymore and started laughing. Vic rolled his eyes.

Well, anyway, it was time to change and meet the crew. Vic had briefly caught a glimpse of the new counsoler, and told him they’d talk business tomorrow. Nobody in sick bay has seen him yet, so it looks like he agreed to the deal. He passed on control of the ward to one of the resident physicians, and saw Cinna off to the holodeck. Time to eat! He thought as he left for the shindig.

USS Discovery Ten Forward

Vic stayed quiet during most of the night. He would have plenty of dealings with the new CEO during her physical, and he wasn’t really in a rush to talk to the guy who would share the medical workload for the next few months or more. There would be plenty of time for both.

Instead he just eyed all the other officers, noting how little he has really gotten to know them all in the past. Lt. Raines was perhaps the one he’s spent the most time with, but he was reluctant to count that since it was spent in an away shuttle over the unconscious body of Lt. Keely.

One thing White did notice was how quiet everyone was. MacTavish seemed to be distracted, Gavison was no better (although he had a valid excuse in his little girl), and Mali even ducked out to find herself some space. Can’t say I blame anyone. Life has been in a rut recently….

“Well doctor, at least your services will be in high demand over the next week or so” he wispered under his breath, in the general direction of Chris as he left the table to chat with their pilot.

The food was wonderful. Raines definitely went to some effort. Everyone knew Waldgrave was English, but it was sometimes forgotten that Victor grew up in London as well. His accent was almost entirely faded, although he did sometimes let it slip back during long conversations with his Celtic charge nurse.

Victor nodded to Ben. “This is wonderful! I do hope that all of our future crew additions include a Brit if it means a feast like this.”

The night passed rather slowly, much like all of his nights without third shift duty in the medical ward. He contemplated leaving, but decided to wait until others had left. He had a long day ahead tomorrow… might as well relax and enjoy the night while he can.

After the majority of the crew left, Victor took a seat in one of the large easy chairs, and ordered some old Earl Grey. The food had brought back his desire for a late night tea, and he planned to indulge himself… as a reward for not getting the ship blown up within ten minutes this time, he justified it to himself.

He will remain in Ten Forward most likely until late in the night, or until someone calls him to do something. There are a lot of things to think about and equally many to not think about. Tonight was a night where the “not” category was particularly large.

Adrian moved from the buffet and sat down at the table when gestured. It was finally time for his first paid position as a mercenary. Time to see what it was like fighting against what he had obeyed his entire life.

The man was not tall, but quite built, especially for a spellcaster. The tattoo on his arm is typical of one who served in the red corps, but it has a single scar cut across it. Apparently the lad has some resentment towards his past.
He looked extraordinarily average and forgettable, were it not for the hand and a half sword on his back. His hair was a light reddish brown, roughly shoulder length. Adrian's eyes sparked with the telltale sign of a magic user, the electric grey tint brought out by the bright white of his eye.

After Sir Arien gave his speech, Adrian took the initiative.

"I am Adrian Valentine, formerly of the red corps. I have since sworn to never lower myself to their level and hail magical energy from the lazyness of a library. My place is at the front lines, along with good men such as Sir Thedell here. I must admit, I am looking forward to a bit of unstructured violence after all those years of slavery..."

Stadate: 2366.10.21
USS Discovery, Dr. White’s quarters– 0500

=/=Victor, it’s five! Get up already! We’re waiting for you in Ten Forward!=/=

Ugh… Gurk? Wha? Damn I overslept….Was I sleeping?

Vic reached over to his nightstand and tapped his commbadge. “Sorry Cinna, I’ll be right there.”

He quickly threw on a new uniform, topped it off with his blue lab coat and pinned his commbadge to the lapel. He was clean. Last night about 0300 the neonate nurse on duty paged him about baby Gavison. Nothing major, just those little things that happen with newborns who are learning to react with the world around them. Vic had left strict orders to page him directly for anything dealing with Kaila. Better to miss a little sleep than risk one of the more inexperienced medical staffers… well… Vic didn’t like to think about that. Dr. Wash was an infection doc with less than a days experience dealing with newborns, and none of the residents were even liscenced. Cinna was the only other to trust, but she knew that she was only an enlisted nurse. A paperwork nightmare for her to take charge of a Commander’s child.

The door to his quarters slid open to reveal a hallway with shift three lighting. It wouldn’t get much brighter for another hour or so, which is exactly why he was going to Ten Forward for “Darkened Coffee” as Cinna had to appropriately named it.

Dr. White punched his destination into the computer and was there momentarily. The doors of Ten Forward slid open to reveal a few third shift personel winding down, and Cinna, Gabe and Taylor sitting at their usual table in the corner. Bill had made a habit of coming a few times a week, but he was only starting to feel included in the clique. He wasn’t there this time.

Cinna was the first to speak, as usual. “What exactly were you doing last night? I saw on the records you visited the Commander’s kid again.”

Vic sighed, “Just routine. The girl has had everything she could possibly imagine pumped into her with zero effort for the past nine months. Can’t expect her to enjoy having to work for it.” He grinned. Taylor smirked. Cinna rolled her eyes. Gabe stayed focused on his coffee.

“I was about to go tell the Gavison’s that they can take their daughter to their quarters. She’ll still be in her safehouse, but I don’t think she needs 24 hour watch anymore. Lt. Gavison won’t take her eyes off her anyway, and I doubt the Commander will be thinking of much else.”

Cinna nodded. “I’ll put in the request immediately,” she said as she punched it into her PADD.

Taylor squee’ed with excitement. She loved this part. “I’ll get her a new bed!” The Discovery hadn’t had many newborns, so she was thrilled to get this chance. Being Chief Sterile Supply Coordinator had it’s perks, afterall.

USS Discovery, Sick bay (neonatal unit)– 0600

Without much surprise, both Cmdr. and Lt. Gavison were there at six sharp to take Kaila. Taylor (or Chief Alexandria as she was known to them) escorted the parents, pushing the large crib that would be baby’s home for the next few weeks, at least. She checked and rechecked that it was working properly before signing the electronic tag and saying farewell. It was only a short travel from the Gavison’s quarters back to Ten-Forward to finish her morning ritual with the others.

Victor welcomed her back, and they sat around doing nothing… just like always. It was a rare thing for four department heads in Starfleet to just sit and do nothing together, which is why they all enjoyed it.

Finally, Gabe broke the silence. “So I hear Dr. Gene is leaving.”

Vic nodded, “Yep, he requested to switch out along with one of the residents he had taken an interest in. Sad to see him leave, but I’m sure the Captain will find a suitable replacement.

“Computer. Time” Cinna begrudgingly spoke.

=/=The current time is oh-seven-hundred-hours.=/=

“Time to move out I suppose.”

They left a small tip for Jacandra, and headed back to Sick Bay.

A few hours passed with little ado about anything, with the only constants being the boredom and the regular checkups on Mother and Baby Gavison. White found one of his new favorite hobbies was watching Blair, Gavison, Avanti and MacTavish. He had decided to take another shot at command training, if nothing more than to prove that he can do it. So far the holodeck has given him average marks, as expected. At this rate he’d be an Admiral in about sixty years.

Around 1030 the familiar voice of Yeoman Allen could be heard asking around Sick Bay for Dr. White. She learned a while ago that the doc sometimes “forgot” his commbadge during more… unpleasant patient examinations. She found Chief Decon wandering around and left the message with her.

USS Discovery, observation lounge – 1055

“Doctor, it is my understanding that you have rekindled interest in command training, and are even now logging time on the holodecks to perform the necessary coursework. Is that correct?”

Vic was a bit ashamed to admit his medocre performance, so decided to simply nod. I was a bit uncharacteristic of him to be short with the captain, but he figured Blair has had ample opportunity to access his training logs.

“You have fifteen years’ service in Starfleet, doctor, and I am well aware of your sound judgment from firsthand experience. Furthermore, I do trust that you will successfully complete command training in a timely manner. Therefor, I am appointing you as acting third officer aboard the Discovery.”

This blew Vic away. Yea it was sad to see Avanti go, and even sadder to see MacTavish given more power (now the guy would surely blow a gasket) but this was possibly the worst of them all.

“I know you won’t change your mind, but I told you when I joined this ship that I’m not command material. But, I suppose we all must face our demons eventually. Thank you for the trust and the position, Captain.”

Mac had voiced his protest as well, and it would seem they are not that much different. The bridge was about to get a lot more interesting, that’s for sure. Four *very* different command styles would at least keep the crew on their feet.

The new 3O decided to clear his mind for a bit. He tapped his badge. “White Rabbit to Red Fox. Copy?”

=/=Vic that’s gotta be one of the dumbest things you’ve ever said.=/=

“It was Taylor’s idea, blame her. Anyway Cinna, I’m going to be in Bridge-one for a while. Hold the fort.”

=/=Dr. Gene has already emptied his office. He must be leaving today with Commander Avanti.=/=

“Seems that way. I’ll be there in a few hours. Good Bye.”

The door to the bridge slid open, where he found Commander Gavison firmly in control of things. He waved off the salutes from the other crew and plopped down in the emergency medical station. He busied himself by keying in perscription renewals, but his main thoughts were on the department. A new aCMO, and Third Officer duties…

He came upon the TAC department in his list, and keyed a few refills. MacTavish’s name was still starred by Dr. Wash. Refused Medication… loudly Well, Jack had denied blood pressure meds before. No sense giving up just yet though. He’d deal with that later though. It seems Lt. Raines has a gift for him. The Doctor thanked the Ops manager and told him he’d have his people get in contact with ops people to schedule appointments for the newcomers.

White then ventured back to Sick Bay to see Cinna on her feet as usual, directing civilian and military personell to various waiting rooms and exam rooms. “Cinna, sometimes I wonder why I’m even here. You can forge my signiture, answer my phone, make my appointments and practically do my exams. All I have to do is cut off my finger and carve out my retina and you’d be the new CMO. You’d have to dye your hair a bit though. Red doesn’t suit me.”

His smart comment earned him a gurney pillow to the back of the head, which he was conveniently unable to dodge. Her laughter trailed off into one of the stock rooms.

USS Discovery Sick Bay – 1600

The farewell party in the med crew was a gathering for sure. Minimal appointments, no emergencies, and lots of food. Anyone was invited, but the attendance was vastly dominated by medical crew and immediate friends and family. Dr. Gene, one of the residents, and a handful of enlisted were stepping off onto the Valmont either for duty or further reassignment.

It had been a fun few hours, but it had to end eventually. The call came from the bridge that the Valmont was in range, and those leaving gathered their belongings while the rest began party clean up duty.

White and Cinna accompanied those leaving to the bridge, where they said their final farewells. Avanti was the biggest loss to the crew, but Vic preferred to think of it as a huge gain for the Valmont’s crew. He spent the last few minutes while the ships got within range signing off on everyone’s reports so they were medically able to be reassinged. Vic, like most of his practices, wasn’t quite sure if this was an actual starfleet procedure, but he acted like it was. Always nice to have a record. He shook the big man’s hand, and then retreated to his command station. He didn’t care to be there when all the switching was done. He’d stay off the bridge in the Deck One Emergency Medical Station. Close enough to catch Arevaci on his way out, but far enough where he could distance himself from the formalities to come. Cinna took Vic’s feelings a step further and went back to Sick Bay to close up her shift and get the night charge started.

(OOC: Vic will wait in the deck’s emergency station outside the bridge and meet Arevaci away from the other brass.)

Don't forget that deck 1 (bridge) also has a medical station. Typical first aid stuff, but it's where you'll find White, Cinna, or at extreme times Dr. Wash. It's rare anyone else is trusted enough to man that station during first shift.

Dime, you should always keep on you something with which to defend yourself. That blaster is nice and strong, but it will do you no good if you should be without it...

"Shut up father, I get your point," the Twi'lek muttered aloud amiss the blaster fire. I had meant to buy a hold out on this very planet... damnable timing.

He could defend himself with words in most cases, but against a trained military who makes faulty claims, there is little that he could do but shoot. Unfortunately there is no gun nearby. He had learned from another member of the band on Corellia that very good musicians are able to inspire their comrads to fight more effectively, but Dime had not yet learned that skill. Guess he was making a break for it. If there was an obvious blaster nearby, he would go for it and begin shooting the guards down, but if not he would dive into his room and grab his old trust heavy.

Captured again… oh well. So be it. Dime thought to himself as the inevitable knock on the front door of his room began to sound.

“I’m coming, I’m coming,” he replied, putting an abrupt end to his march studies. The guard standing in front of him as the door slid open stared at him with somber look and instructed him to the main passenger berth. Dime read his gut and came to see he was not under arrest, nor suspect.

“May I bring some entertainment? I’m quite the accomplished performer, and it would be dull indeed to sit in silence. Agreed?” he gave a slight raise of his gripped slitherhorn, and the guard nodded in agreement, and waved to signal that he will escort Dime to the common room.

Dime sat next to his Force-attuned companion in the passenger berth, playing an old favorite from his tour of Coronet City. Anyone native to the city (and likely the planet) would recognize it. It’s an old folk tale that his group updated and gave a modern spin. It doesn’t quite feel the same without some drum and bass, although he still puts some soul in it.
