"Betrayal of the living. Nixmir's legacy. We are witnessing this as if this mirror were a window. There is no time. I'm sorry."

The little halfling witch grabbed Ansgar's pinky finger with such a deep quietness and sadness, that the barbarian thought that this was, perhaps, some strange mourning ritual of the godless folk.

The tracers of white light suddenly encircling Searo, the half-breed, and Ansgar suggested something else was a-foot. The barbarian roared at the trickery, the falsehood of the little, godless witch who had so easily lured Ansgar with his innocent eyes and padded praises. He roared again, looking to step out of the blinding circle of light, but it was too late. The proud and powerful barbarian was humbled and helpless by the magicks of some godless halfling. You fool! Ansgar scolded himself as the blinding light consumed his entire vision...

...And, then... nothing... nothing at all. Fear overtook the barbarian for a moment as the physical world, the world he loved so dearly, vanished away by the black magicks of Searo. Ansgar tried to catch his breath, but couldn't...

Then, as suddenly as it had come, the nothingness passed away. At first, it wasthe sensation of weight returning, of gravity pushing down on his body and the world pushing back up against his feet. Then came the return of smell -- not the pleasant ones of finely prepared food -- but, rather, dirt and blood, the smells of battle, mingled with rotted, unnatural flesh. Combined with the virtigo experienced earlier, the smell nearly caused Ansgar to bring up the halfling's fine dinner.

And, he probably would have, if the sensation of cold hadn't come next, the drop in the temperature stealing the man's breath away. Forcing himself to breathe the frigid air, the painful burning in his lungs reminding him that he was still alive, Ansgar opened his eyes and took in the sight around him.

The scene in the mirror was now a reality before him. The noble man, the walking dead, the battle raging on all around them... it was all there, just as it had been in the mirror.

Ansgar looked at Searo. If the halfling had been one of his people, the barbarian would have looked to knock the man's lights out for pulling such a stunt. But Northman was having a hard time striking Searo. It's like hitting a kid, he thought to himself.

"Another illusion,Searo?" questioned Ansgar with some uncertainty. "Some kind of test to prove our worth, hmmm? I will not be toyed with, witch!"

[OOC: Assuming Searo says something like, "no illusion, son", Ansgar will merely walk up to one of the undead flanking Solomon, drawing his blade, and will take a mighty "hack" at the creature. After this, Ansgar will become a bit more serious, believing Searo -- that he really is in the middle of a massive battle, protecting the king.]

Sorry, guy! I'm hoping you'll be back up before the fight is over. I want to hear the one-liner you got loaded up for the officer.

For real, though, bad rolls for the good guys... which I kinda like, seeing as this is the BBEG at the end of the story. I don't want you to think you can just walk off an Imperial space station with illegal cargo unscathed.

I will say, Dang! Them force powers rock! I'm playing a Jedi every SW game from here on in! It's true what they say, "spellcasters" always pwn.

IN THE HANGER...

As the hanger doors came to a final close, the battle to secure the hanger raged on. With quick reflexes, the last remaining stormtrooper brought his carbine up and targeted the Twi’lek scoundrel. Habo’ik tried to dodge the shot, but had no chance at such a close range.

Pzizzoo! The laser bolt seared into the Twi’lek's shoulder, the force knocking the rogue to the ground. Hako’ib tried to breathe, tried to push back the darkness of unconsciousness that threatened to overtake him, but the darkness overpowered his will and the sweet embrace of unconsciousness overtook him.

Through his helmet speaker, the trooper merely grunted a taunt, “Next!” before turning his attention to helping his superior.

Ithiria had watched the trooper take down Hako’ib, but she was busy fighting someone far more sinister. With little effort she could sense the darkness of the soul in front of her. It was oppressive to her spirit.

Focusing all her energy and all her training, she looked to sever this man’s connection to his dark power. Lifting her hand, she locked eyes with her opponent, and unleased the power inside her. As she did, she could feel the dark power been drawn from him, like poison being drawn from a wound. It was bitterness and rage and hatred and jadedness all rolled into one.

Even so, the officer merely gave Ithiria a twisted smile, “You are no more than a padawan of an extinct order. Let me show you true power, dog!” And with a slight raise of his empty hand, the young Twi’lek Jedi sudden felt her throat tightening, cutting off air to her lungs. She grasped and sputtered.

Ara’ala, tossed as she was from the sled, took a moment to collect herself and catch her breathe. The move likely saved her life, as she heard the heavy footfalls of the remaining trooper looking for her. She waited patiently, silently and with subtle movements drawing out her pilfered pistol. Wait…wait…

Sure enough, the trooper’s head appeared over the maintenance droid, and Ara’ala took the clear shot. The trooper crashed to the floor, landing on top of the Arkanian with a heavy thud.

MEANWHILE… BACK IN THE OPS ROOM…

Karra waited most impatiently for the doors to close. “Hanger doors are now closed,” informed the automated voice.

“Finally!” exclaimed the Cathar. She quickly initiated the lock sequence.

“Hanger doors are now locked,” chimed the computer, the display screen showing the pins of the door locking into place.

“Thank you,” replied Karra, exploring her options a bit further. Door Maintenance…. Hmmm… let’s see what this does… With ever increasing speed and confidence, Karra brought up the maintenance menu and selected a number of items that sounded good to her. “Let’s see… Perform maintenance check on door? Yes! Deactivate door panels? Check! Shut down power to hanger doors? Sounds good to me!”

Each time she initiated the command, the computer chimed in its affirmative response. “Hanger doors are now off line. Power will be restored in twenty minutes.”

“Thank you,” Karra said with a smile as she got up to leave the operations room. With stealth, she peered out the door into the hanger. From her vantage point, she could see Hako’ib lying still on the floor and Ithiria grasping at her throat, seemingly being strangled by invisible hands. Ara’ala was nowhere to be seen.

[OOC: Ick! Bad round for the good guys…. Blah! Sorry!
Some notes:

1) Hako’ib took 20 points of damage (ouch)… I’m ruling that he stabilizes though, so he’s at 0 HP right now. Unconscious on the floor. Sorry, Loki. If Reralae isn’t back by the weekend, I shall be posting that Karra comes and give him some medical attention.

2) Ithiria is currently being choked by a force grip, and the officer is currently maintaining it (meaning that if he succeeds in his Use the Force check next round, Ithiria will be gasping for air next round too). Ithiria took 7 points of damage in this round, and can only take ONE swift action during her next round.

3) Ara’ala took no damage this round. She did manage to take out the stormtrooper though. Yay! Sadly, he’s on top of her. She can push him off as a swift action though, so no big deal.

4) Karra has succeeded in locking the hanger doors. I imagine it would take quite a bit of effort on the Empire’s side to come through those doors now. Karra is currently in the hanger, just outside the ops door nearest Hako’ib and has not been seen by the officer yet. Hako’ib is definitely within a move action for her, with 3 squares to spare.

5) Otherwise, everyone else is in their same positions, save the trooper who is dead and occupying the same square as Ara’ala.

So… well… enjoy! Two more updates from me until I wrap this game up. I really need to be done by mid December.

Subject: Again... I think you have quite a bit of freedom.

It's not like your game is going to become canon history for the setting... ... well, maybe it might. But, that's besides the point.

I don't know how many times I've played FR, made some great adventures using the campaign setting where characters had significant influence on the future of the lands, only to have WotC come out with a new edition putting the history of the world a little further and... dang it!... our characters are not in it!

Anyway, the point is, I think Audalis is offered up as a setting for you to take and run with. And your Audalis will probably look different than Olan's, or Alacrity's, or Almerin's, or mine... great! As far as I know, I'm the only one who has built an entire mini section around Rayther (called Shinara's Keg), which has: lots of mountain ranges surrounding it, a younger khordish expansionist clan, loads of khordish and orc ruins, and is currently being scouted out by a Orc worshipper of Tyrannis as the staging grounds for a complete take over of northwestern Antaron (and then the 5 kingdoms).

Orc ruling Bayris? Probably not in Olan's Audalis. But a definite possibility in mine.

Heck! Almerin added a new god in his Local Legends game (which we subsequently killed... but still...).

I'd say you have freedom! We might even steal some of your ideas and run them in our game!

Searo pulls the tapestry aside and handed the corner to Anyroth, who pushed it aside farther. The Halfling gingerly touched three places on the arched metal door in seemingly random places. The door makes a some sounds similar to bolts opening and the seal opens. The little sorcerer labors to pull the door open under its own weight.

"There is a...contingency...ugh... Solomon... the king... if the barrier drops, I am alerted, as are a few others... the barrier is down."

Ansgar followed the little halfling into the secret room, listening carefully to the witch speak of machines of magic. When the Searo drew away the sheet from the mirror, Ansgar's feeling were equal parts confusion and laughter.

Has he made so much fuss to look at himself in a mirror? the Northman thought to himself in disbelief.

"What is the meaning of this, Searo?" Ansgar questioned the halfing. But the halfling was focused on the mirror.

"Show me Solomon Vasgar," Searo commanded. Ansgar watched as the image in the looking glass changes to show the scenes of a battle great battle, and that of a mighty warrior engaged in combat with the wretched undead. The image was so vivid, the sound so real, Ansgar had to keep himself from jumping through the glass.

"It is only an illusion," the barbarian reminded himself aloud.

[OOC: Tag Dungeon Master!... I'm assuming Searo will say something to the effect of it NOT being an illusion...]

"If it is not an illusion," began Ansgar, unsheathing his sword. "Then tell me, witch, where this battle be, that we may lends our arms!"

INSIDE THE OPS ROOM

Karra could feel the dark presence approaching, bringing with it thoughts of despair and ruin… hopelessness. But the Cathar pushed aside the feeling for the moment, trusting in her instinct. And her instinct told her she needed to get those hanger doors shut now!

“Close door,” Karra said to herself. She worked the terminal to perform the same function.

“Hanger doors closing,” chimed the computer voice over the hanger’s intercommunicating speakers. “Danger: please keep clear of the hanger doors. Hanger doors closing.”

“Now,” continued the Cathar. “Let’s see if we can lock this place up tight…”

Her hands raced over the terminal, opening up the “Door Security” option. Scanning through the list of action items, she found just what she was looking for – “Initiate Hanger Lockdown”.

The computer’s voice chimed in over the operations room speakers, “Unable to comply. Please unsure hanger doors are closed before initiating lockdown procedure.”

OUT IN THE HANGER

The system’s computer was still broadcasting its warning about the doors closing as Ara’ala revved up the engines of the repulsor sled and moved it into a better position. Facing the hanger doors head on, she had a clear shot on the incoming helmet heads…

And she didn’t waste it! The blaster cannon roared to life, sending a hail of laser bolts into the lead stormtroopers. One after another, four of them fell to the ground and stopped their advance. The officer behind them seemed unfazed. “This hanger must be secured,” he commanded the remaining troopers. “I want these terrorists dead!”

Just then, Ithiria ran by, taunting the officer as she went by. While the troopers’ gaze followed the Twi’lek, the officer’s did not. “Stay focused, soldiers! I want that sled out of commission first.”

The two remaining soldiers followed their commander’s orders, stepping inside the hanger and taking aim on Ara’ala. But they were caught, unaware of the rogue waiting for his moment to strike. Stepping out from behind the wall, Hako’ib’s pistol quickly found a target and sent forth its bolt of death. With a deep howl of pain, the stormtrooper writhe on the ground. The Twi’lek merely stepped back in behind the wall again.

“Useless clones!” cursed the officer, as he raced passed the remaining trooper towards Ara’ala. Hako’ib, hoping to get a second shot in, missed the officer. The man lifted his hand and made a pushing motion.

A wave of force pressed up against the sled, tossing the Arkanian from it as if she were no more than a rag doll and slamming her body into one of the repair droids.

“Now!” spoke the officer in a commanding voice. “Prepare for the wrath of the Empire!”

[OOC: Okay! We’re back online! Yay!

Here’s what’s happened…

~ Ara’ala hit and took out ST#5,#6,#8, and #9. Nice!
~ Hako’ib took out ST#10, but missed the officer
~ Ithiria tried to create a diversion… officer didn’t go for it… yet.
~ Karra started the “Close Door” sequence. By the end of next round those doors should be closed. Reralae, this means you don’t need to post this next round, as I assume Karra will wait there for another round and then start the lockdown sequence. I’m also NPCing her until I hear that you are back.

~Officer hit Ara’ala with the FORCE!! Bam! Ara’ala took 8 points of damage from that fall.

~Enemies remaining: Officer and ST#7

Deadline to post up… Wednesday, Dec 2, 7 PM EST… hope to see you all here!

Hey gang!

So, I wanted to check and see if we're the type of players who like to discuss the in game stuff and plans and... stuff... OOC here on the Q/A board? Or are you more that just post IC and let's not chat about it?

Just checking.

I was reviewing Almerin's posts (always a good thing to do as he's regularly dropping hints and clues... very subtly, I might add)... anyway... I was struck by the description of the tracks -- little dots like thin spear tips. Spiders, maybe? Or, at least an insect creature of some kind? Your thoughts?

Now about this black pool? Ideas on how to cross it? I think walking through it might be a bad idea.

ALMERIN: How wide is the pool? How much pool do with have to cross in order to get to the rock with the shroom?

And can we tell how the khords are hanging? By their necks? With ropes? Are their feet touching the ground? Do they look dead?

Thanks!

"No, master. The other little bell..."

Ansgar, having paid no attention to the servant but keeping his eyes on his host, watched as the colordrained away from Searo's face. "Oh, no," came the little man's cry, and already Ansgar knew whatever was to come next would likely interrupt dinner.

The halfling leaps to his feet and runs to the other side of the room. "Something's wrong with Solomon! Hurry now!"

"What in the abyss is going on here?" asked the half-breed, obviously alarmed at their host's strange behaviour. "What's wrong Searo?"

It was a fasinating scene for the Northman to watch -- a witch as powerful as this godless halfling gripped with fear by whatever news that little bell brought. While the frantic halfling, with the help of the half-breed, pulled away a gold leafed tapestry from the wall, Ansgar pushed himself away from the table and gathered his belonging. His long strides quickly brought him close to the others

Behind the tapestry seems to be some kind of vault door. Witchs and their secrets, Andsgar grumbled to himself, his hand ready to draw out his blade.

Berodin could feel the moisture in the air as the party traveled deeper into the mushroom forest. The humidity was oppressive and weighted down on the stout khord. With a deep “Humph” however, Solanis’ faithful pushed forward, following after the others as they followed after the tracks.

A sudden scream in the distance caught the priest’s attention. His eyes narrowed, seeking out its source, even as he uttered an oath under his breath. “By Rydor’s hammer, if that child be dead…” The rest was left unsaid.

Then, in the same direction of the scream, Berodin caught sight of what looked like a torch. Just as quickly it disappeared behind a mushroom cap.

One of his kinsmen shouted, "Someone is in dire need of help! Quick my companions... we must rush to the aid of the person in question so that we may aid them in their time of need!"

Berodin moved to set of the path as well, but stopped. He could already feel the hostility of the forest… Care now, lad… While it be mighty easy to step off the path, it might not be so to step back on.

Thinking quickly, the cleric narrowed his eyes and tried to remember exactly where he had heard the scream and seen the torch light. “Father of Light, lead us into truth and light the way.”

With his prayer raised, Berodin focused on the spot where he believed the torch light had once been.

[OOC: Casting “Light”. If this is successful, Berodin will enter into the forest, trying to make as straight a line as possible to the Light spell, and encouraging the others to follow him. I think the Radience class feature gives him a +1 to his caster level on spells with the light descriptor and maybe doubles their duration as well? Don’t have the books in front of me atm.]

Here's one possible build...

Build: Barbarian 2 / Ranger 3 / Scout 3 / Horizon Walker 1

Build Progress: Ranger 2 / Barbarian 1 / Scout 2 / Barbarian +1 / Scout +1 / Ranger +1 / Horizon Walker 1

Alternative Class Features: Lion Totem - Pounce (from Complete Champion... replaces Fast Movement... you need this!

Feats: Weapon Finesse {1st}, Track {Bns}, Two-Weapon Fighting {Bns}, Intimidating Rage {3rd}, Extra Rage {6th}, Endurance {Bns}, Swift Hunter {9th}

Stats: DEX > CON > STR and WIS and CHA > INT.

Class Features:

Barbarian: Rage (4x/day with feat), Pounce, Uncanny Dodge (or Improved Trip or Improved Grapple if you use Alt Class Features from Unearthed Arcane)

Ranger: Favoured Enemy (2 with Swift Hunter feat), Track, Wild Empathy, Two-Weapon Fighting, Endurance

Scout: Trapfinding, Uncanny Dodge, Battle Fortitude +1, Fast Movement 10', Skirmish [+2d6 dmg / +1 AC with Swift Hunter feat], Trackless Step

Horizon Walker: Choose "Desert"... this gives you immunity to fatigue, which allows you to negate the "after-Rage" penalties.

This gives you a wild woodsman (or mountain-man). The skills between the classes blend nicely and it should be half decent to play.

Your main combat tactic is charge and then full attack. Your dex is high so you should be one of the first to move. Move at least 10' to get the charge bonus to attack plus the skirmish bonus to damage.

Anyway... there's one idea.
