Subject: My ideas

I'm facing my usual difficulty in narrowing down my ideas to just one...

So far, I got it down to:

  • Barbarian, Half-Orc or Human [Variant], with the Entertainer/Gladiator or Urchin background

  • Stout Halfling Monk with the Acolyte, Entertainer or Hermit background

  • Half-Elf Rogue with the Entertainer or Sailor background

If Impulse is thinking Rogue, I'll focus on one of the first two. I think I'm learning towards the Monk... though the Barbarian with the Urchin background might make some easy connections with Impulse's character.

Anyway, that's where I'm at.

Subject: Druid Healing

The Druid does have the Goodberry spell which does create 10 berries, with each berry healing 1 HP and providing the eater with nourishment for the day. I'm not sure if a person can eat more than one berry in a 24 hr period. Lady Dark, how do you interpret the text?

The Druid also has access to the Cure Wounds spell, which can use any spell slot in order to heal one person [spell slot level used x d8] hit points.

If Impulse plays a Bard, at level 2, they also have a mechanic that lets them heal everyone 1d6 each time we rest. And the Bard also has access to the Cure Wounds spell

The fighter also has a mechanic that recovers every short rest [around 3x/day] which also them to heal themselves [1d10 + Fighter Level] hit points each time they use it. So, we might not even need to spend any resources to heal the fighter.

Subject: Scimitars

Well, a scimitar is super easy... and you can start with two of them if you like and they are both finessable (can sub DEX for STR for attack AND damage) and light. 1d6 damage/slashing. Pretty swell in fact.

5e has a cap of how far you can improve your ability scores (20/+5 is the cap), and it is way more restrictive on how much DEX bonus you can add to your armour.... so, Leather Armour (12+5 {max dex}) is almost equal to the most protective plate mail (18... no dex allowed).

The fact that finesse weapons allow you to add the bonus to attack AND damage rolls, combined with the above armor rules, makes a DEX-based fighter a real possibility.

Yeah, 5E does a pretty good job to make any party make up okay.

Eol, are you thinking of going High Elf for your Eldritch Knight. That would seem to work best with the reading material you provided. And I wonder if LadyDark would maybe consider houseruling a martial weapon spear that would be similar to a scimitar except piercing...

So... Thrusting Spear: 1d6 damage, finessable, thrown (20/60)

I would price the weapon at atleast 25 gp, though I don't exactly understand how the game designers priced the equipment.

Anyway, just an idea.

Hey Lady Dark!

Thanks for your willingness to start up another game here at the inn!

What's the starting level for your game? And are you able to give a little teaser for this adventure you're looking to send your PCs on?

Thanks!

Topic: Altered Carbon
Subject: Eclipse Phase

Apparently, there is already a RPG system that tackles a lot of the elements of Altered Carbon called Eclispe Phase by Posthuman Studios.

I thought the series was alright... in particular, I enjoyed the AI hotel and the girl who jumps into the syn-sleeve. That was a neat element to the story. A lot of gratuitous nudity/sex, in the same vain as Game of Thrones... it's meant to be gratiutious and obscene. The violence and expendability of life also.

I also find it interesting how almost no show on TV has any character that is really "good" or "heroic"... everyone is broken, everyone is compromised, everyone has issues.... and, while a number of the character are aware of their shortcomings, they simply embrace/accept their shortcomings with little to no effort of trying to change them. Cheering for anyone is compomising... Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black, Game of Throne, any of the super"hero" shows. It's an interesting movement in our cultural story-telling.

Subject: Here's my main wondering

If there is a way to actually stop the Reckoning from happening, I would wonder why the longer lived races -- in particular, the elves and dragons -- would not have solved this problem already.

I cannot imagine them letting this continue for more than two or three Reckonings before they solved this problem, even if it required someone of human blood in order to solve it.

That's my biggest wondering.

And if there is no way to actually solve the problem, I'm surprised the intelligent, long-lived races haven't actually just shifted themselves to some other plane of existence. If the lich council could shift every single Godzilla from every other plane, surely the elves and dragons can figure out how to gate themselves to a Godzilla free plane, right?

Hey Grugg,
Is it possible to play a Dwarven Radiant Servant of the Ancestors? If yes, then I'd like to submit a:

Male Dwarf Cloistered Cleric of the Ancestors 6 / Radiant Servant of the Ancestors 2. Sun and War would be his domains.

If that's no good, then I'd like to play a Female Gnome Beguiler 8.

Peace,
Ayrn.

Subject: So... do I have this right?

So far, we are looking at:

A Druid (unless you've traded away your wild shape ability, at level 8 you can be a large brown bear all day long, putting out some decent damage while casting spells... and you could have a brown bear companions fighting alongside of you... good times!)

A Hexblade / Lasher (melee battlefield controller, with some debuffing)... Out of curiosity, have you seen the unofficial fixes that the guy who designed the Hexblade has suggested?

A Woodland Warrior (skirmisher dishing out damage with some scouting / trapping skills)

A Pyro-Sorcerer (fire damage dealing ranged striker?)

So, the two areas (maybe three) we seem to be missing are:

1) Someone who can open locks... we could get around this if the Sorcerer either put Knock as one of his spells known, or we split the cost and just give the sorcerer a Wand of Knock.

2) Someone who healing us up... again, we could get around this mostly if each of the characters spends 750 gp on their very own Healing Belt which allows you to heal by touch 2d8 HP 3x/day... so 15x/day 2d8 HP of healing. That's a good start. Personally, this just makes sense regardless of whether or not we have a healer in the group.

We could also split the cost and purchase a Wand of Cure Serious Wounds and give it to Druid. 50x 3d8 HP healed over the course of the adventure. I think that should take care of it mostly.

3) Someone to be the negotiator and friendly face. Not sure if the Sorcerer is going to be pulling this off with a high CHA and a maxed out Bluff skill.

I'm hoping to decide and finish a character tonight. (Sooo many great options, I always have a hard time choosing.)

Peace,
Ayrn

Subject: Sorry

Hey Nomad,

I meant Moonlit Elf, which is one of the races listed on the first page of Grugg's game (Fortune's Favoured Q&A).

Dragonheart Mage is a Dragon-themed prestige class for sorcerers which grants a 4 bonus draconic feats (one being Draconic Breath) and expands the Draconic Breath feat to cause more damage as you grow in levels... it also only advances your spellcasting 8 levels over the 10 level class.

Some of the Draconic feats grant and stack some nice bonuses once you get about 5 or so of them.

Anyway... I think the Elemental Savant would be another great choice. And you don't lose any casting levels on the front end... so you can cast 4th level spells at the start of the game.

Peace,
Ayrn

Subject: Nomad... something to consider

Nomad,

I was toying with an idea for a Moonlit Sorcerer 5 / Dragonheart Mage 3, going off of Grugg's description of the Moonlit Elves having some relationship to dragons.

This build was looking to pick up lots of the Draconic feats (Dragonheart Mage allows the sorcerer to pick up a few extra Draconic feats)

At 8th level, this build had the following feats:
Draconic Heritage [Gold], Draconic Toughness, Draconic Senses, Draconic Breath... and either Draconic Legacy or Draconic Knowledge (or a different Draconic feat of your choice).

The combo of these feats together gives the character:
+10 HP
+5 bonus to Listen, Search and Spot
Darkvision 60'
Blindsense 20'!!
The ability to change an arcane spell slot into a 2d6xspell slot level 30 ft cone of fire
Plus whatever bonus your last Draconic feat gives you... Draconic Legacy gives you three nice 1/day spells, while Draconic Knowledge gives you +5 bonus to all knowledge skills.

Add to the character some extra flame magic if that floats your boat.

You could pull the same stunt with a human as well.

Just a thought.
Peace,
Ayrn

Edit... you would be limited to Lvl 3 Spells at the start though... that's the trade-off

Subject: My ideas for characters

Assuming we're playing at level 8 (:NAUGHTY:

1) A Half-Ogre Crusader 6. I was thinking he'd be attached to the organization sending out the crew to retrieve the artifact... he's the muscle and (hopefully) insurance that the organization actually gets their artifact. He's all tank, with maybe a bit of minor healing power.

2) An Elan (or re-fluffed Kalashtar) Psion 8. Again, I was thinking he or she would be somehow attached to the organization. The character is actually passing himself off as human. Perhaps the artifact is a rare psionic amplifier or maybe a crystal rumored to contain long forgotten powers. This character is likely battlefield control and blaster.

3) A Kobold Dragonfire Adept 8. He's trying to regain his draconic heritage. Somehow the artifact or the patron are connected to a dragon. This character is all about battlefield control and area attacks. I could make him not a kobold.

Anyway, I can pretty much fit any role. I got more ideas too, these are my top tree. I'm not super interested in playing a cleric... but if I did:

Cleric 6 / Radiant Servant of Pelor 2

So great!
Peace,
Ayrn

Subject: Idea for Tann

Tann, not sure if you normally like a two-weapon fighting ranger or a archery-style ranger, but... Complete Scoundrel had this sweet feat (Swift Hunter) that combined Scout and Ranger in a nice way... level in Ranger counted as Scout levels with regards to the Scout's skirmish ability, and levels of Scout counted as Ranger levels with regards to the Favoured Enemy ability and you were ability to apply the Skirmish damage to Favoured Enemies that were normally immune to Skirmish damage (like undead, and such).

Anyway, pretty straight forward character build. Also, the alternative class feature "Distracting Attack" (which replaces the Animal Companion on the Ranger) makes this build the Sneak-Attacker's best friend.

Just throwing it on the table.

Ayrn
