Up!

So sorry for the delay. Interest failures, solo parenting, and heavy work schedule delayed me.

Anyway, OOC chat amongst yourselves regarding whether or not to accept Switch's offer or to present a counter offer are welcomed and encouraged.

I hope to update this Sunday 19th, again, and then I will be go until the following Sunday, 26th.

Looking forward to your re/action.

Subject: Here it is!

The heroes settle themselves into Switch’s den and drinks are served.

“And now… drinks! What would you fine organics enjoy?”

Ithiria shakes her head at the offer, “Nothing for me, thank you, good sir.”

Switch tills its head slightly at the Twi’lek female, “Hmmm…” He is about to say something, but Ara interrupts with her own request.

“Corellian spiced ale, if you have it.”

“Make it two,” Mars added gruffly.

The protocol droid’s visual sensors brightened a bit, and if it could have smiled, the companions were sure it would have. “A fine choice. And, of course, I have it.”

The droid’s Twi’lek servant moved in to serve the guests, bringing Ara and Mars their drinks first before lingering by Ithiria. “I have brought you something special. A little reminder of home, and something to calm your nervous twitch.” He places a glass into Ithiria’s hands. The liquid inside has layered colors of neon orange, blue, and purple. The drink carries distinct scent that does indeed remind the Jedi of home.

Switch makes a sound from its voicebox that sounds like it is clearly its throat. The Twi’lek bows slightly towards the droid, “My apologies, master.” Turning back to Ithiria, the Twi’lek gives her a wicked smile, “Enjoy.” He then returns to his place, but keeps his eyes locked on the Jedi.

[OOC: Feel free to comment, Geraint]

Switch moves the conversation to business. “Now, what can I do for you? My services are available to anyone who can pay. What would you like to know?”

Ithiria, still standing, begins the conversation. “We are here to collect a shipment you are holding for a friend of ours,” she states calmly.

Switch keeps his eyes on his standing guest, while Ara adds, “Her name is Maya.”

Gently, Switch speaks to Ithiria, “Please ma’am, sit. You have nothing to fear, unless you intend to hurt me. But you are beginning to make me even nervous with your standing, please.”

[OOC: Again, Gereint, feel free to comment, though I’m moving the story forward regardless of your action… though your actions may have an impact on your negotiations.]

Continuing, Switch said, “Ah yes, Maya…” he looks up towards the ceiling as though remembering a fond moment in time. Looking back at the companions, “Yes, yes. I am indeed holding some special cargo for Maya. Now, the information you need to locate this precious cargo, that will cost you. So… what shall we set the price at, hmmm?”

R5-B8 whirls and chirps at Switch’s side, to which the protocol droid replies with an incredulous tone, “R5! I could never charge such honoured guests that price. It must be something more reasonable… something… Ah-ha! I’ve got it!”

Turning back to the companions, it states, “One thousand credits… One thousand credits and I shall release to you the location of this cargo and you can do with it whatever pleases you. One thousand credits… unless you would like to trade in another currency…”

“What are you suggesting, Switch?” asks Mars, seemingly uncaring.

Again the droid’s eyes seem to light up. “Ah, well… I would be willing to trade in information. You check in with me regularly, from time to time, and pass on to me information of interest to myself. I’d be will to decrease my eminently reasonable fee of one thousand credits by two hundred credits for each of you who is willing to supply me with information of interest? What do you say?”

Subject: Meeting Switch

Ara’ala makes a quick deal with the Gamorreans, which leaves everyone peaceable. Mars coughs up the lion’s share of the bribe (80 credits), while Ara’ala and Ithiria split the rest. (35 credits each)

The Gamorreans take their new found wealth and, true to their word, step away from the storage bay doors. Mars steps forward and presses the button. The bay doors give way with a terrible squeal, revealing the storage bay.

The deep storage bay is as run-down as the corridors leading up to it, with entire metal plates missing from the floor and a huge, open exhaust shaft near the back of the room. Large crates litter the area, creating the appearance of a haphazard mess, and the air has a distinct smell of sweat and fumes that makes the entire area unpleasant. Flickering lights provide modest illumination, and a burst pipe along the ceiling leaks blue fluid down one wall.

Near the centre of the room is an item that immediately draws the companions’ eyes as it is both beautiful and seemingly out of place – a large, finely crafted desk made of Japor ivory wood. Ithiria has seen a similar desk in the Jedi temple, before it was ransacked, and all the companions have no doubt the piece of furniture is both priceless and rare.

Sitting peacefully behind the desk is a protocol droid with shiny, ebony coverings that seem to soak up light and only the slightest reflection. The droid’s eyes flicker slightly, as though imitating a person blinking rapidly, while its left hand works the computer beside it. Assessing the companions, the droid stops typing and addresses its guests. “Ah, visitors!” it says light and cheerfully. Its voice is male, with a Coruscanti-Imperial accent.*He gestures his guests to come closer. “Come in, come in. I hope my guards did not frighten you much. They are a bit boarish.”

The three companions step warily into the storage bay. “Come, come!” continues the droid, his voice carefree. “Can I offer you something to drink?”

As the companions step closer to the desk, their perceptive senses pick out other beings in the storage bay. Three thugs can be seen hiding behind the some of the crates. In addition, a Twi’lek stands off to the left of the droid and in the shadows of a large cabinet. The cabinet contains a large selection of various alcoholic drinks – ales and wines, whiskeys and rums. A rather large collection for a droid, considering the metal-head couldn’t drink.

A beep and a whirl from behind the desk alerts the companions of another droid – a blue and red astromech. “Ah! Ofcourse!” the protocol droid says in response to the astromech. “Where are my manners?” Turning back to the companions, he gives them a curt bow, “I am Switch. And this,” indicating the astromech. “is my trusted companion, R5-B8.”

R5-B8 whirls and chirps his greetings.

Switch continues, “And now… drinks! What would you fine organics enjoy?”

[OOC: Feel free to make up a drink… or decline, if you desire… makes no difference…]

After the heroes have stated their drink preferences, Switch claps his hands once and the Twi’lek by the liquor cabinet gets to work preparing the requests. Another clap of his hands and one the thugs comes out from behind his crate and approaches Switch. “Yes, boss?”

“Prepare our visitors a place to sit, Jenus”

“Yes, boss.”

The thug moves one long crate and a short box in front of Switch’s desk and arranges them like a chair and loveseat. Switch indicates for the heroes to sit and the Twi’lek comes with their drinks. When everyone is ‘comfortable’, Switch moves into business. “Now, what can I do for you? My services are available to anyone who can pay. What would you like to know?”

[OOC: *Coruscanti-Imperial is a core-worlds upper-class nobility dialect.

The guards nodded in agreement with the Arkanian while snorting and grunting. "True. No Gamorrean. No muscle," replied the first.

They spoke once again in their own language, just briefly, as though discussing the offer.

The first guard addressed Ara again, with a counter offer of his own. "One hundred cred sounds good to Arku. But I say more. One hundred fifty and we go for a walk."

The Gamorrean guards regarded Ara'ala and her companions. They muttered together in their gutteral languages, their body language seeming to suggest they were arguing.

Finally, they returned their attention to the companions. The first guard spoke, "How we know you not here to kill Bossman?"

"And how much you want to pay us?" questioned the other.

Thanks Almerin for the quick reply. Your answers were definitely helpful!

I'm not sure if this is considered meta-gaming (around our tables it's not so...), but I have a couple suggestions for you, Brianna and Dragon Mistress. You definitely don't have to go with them... I'm not even sure how well they'll work. Anyway, take them for what they're worth.

I noticed Tami has flare and ghost sound on her spell list, as well as silent image. Any one of those three could turn out to be a great distraction.

Also, Tami has Comprehend Languages. Maybe cast that and see what these two are talking about. That might help us understand what's going on here.

The only problem I see with using any of these spells is I'm not sure how much noice Tami needs to make to cast them, seeing as she is a bard and all.

Our ranger friend has an Entangle spell. Does that work underground? That may prove helpful, though I find entangle spells dangerous in that they can trap friends as well as foes really easily.

I also have a Levitate potion which I have no qualms about using if I need to get out of a tight spot. How tall are the ceilings here, Almerin? Is that posted somewhere? I'll go back and check.

Anyway, some thoughts of mine.

So, Ithiria's bluff attempt didn't work so well. Though, your telepathy use did...

Ginafae, Ara'ala hears Ithiria's voice in her head saying, Be ready!. I'll let you handle it IC as to how Ara reacts.

Anyway, it's still early before the next update. Hoping you can come up with another action plan before Wednesday!

The Gamorreans are not swayed by Ithiria's bluff. The first one merely grunts and spits on the floor near the Jedi.

The second one gives their reply, "No. Only Switch bossman here," he proceeds to spit on the floor as well. "You tell your chief, 'No work here'. Now go away! We busy, Twik."

[OOC: Yeah... so... bluffing didn't work so well. What's next?]

So... not so much posting action going on. Little sad about that. Hope this will not become habitual.

I'm the type of guy that wants to keep the story moving. I find that if I wait around, then someone will always not be able to post.

So, I pushed the story forward, going off of Ara's suggestion to bluff past the guards.

Anyway... not sure what to say. I know that "conversation" posts are hard to play out online. My suggestion is that you use the Q/A thread here to discuss how you all want to approach this scene (i.e. what do you want to say or do). And then one of you posts as the spokesperson and the others post smaller posts reacting to the scene. (similiar in a way to the Elevator scene where Ginafae did the talking and Geriant posted that Ithiria moved off to the side)

So... there you go. Next update will be Wednesday night(Canada day here). Looking forward to your posts!

While Ara'ala's suggestion to enter into the venting system did not pan out, she had presented another option -- simply talk to the Gamorreans.

With neither the Jedi or the Merc offering any other suggestions, the three companions moved forward into the corridor. Fairly quickly the pig-like creatures noted the three "maintenance workers", though they continued to converse with each other, almost casually.

When the three heroes were within fifteen feet of the bay doors, the Gamorreans finally turned towards them and looked a bit more like guards. From this distance, the heroes could definitely see that the guards were indeed armed with vibro-axes.

"No fixer-workers here," grunted the one.

"No, no. No work here," said the other. "Go away."

Their demeanor and words seemed to suggested that there was no way that anyone was going to get by them to perform maintenance work in the storage bay.

[OOC: So... now what...]

Topic: A Local Legend - Q/A
Subject: A few more questions, plus looking for suggestions...

1) Can Driscoll see if the manlizards are armed with any weapons or armor?

2) Can Driscoll hear any sounds coming from the room with the rug?

3) Can Driscoll smell anything coming from the basket he's hiding behind that might reveal its contents?

4) Can you remind us how many manlizards we saw out on the beach/dunes some nights ago?

Thanks Almerin!

===============================

Also, for Brianna and Dragon Mistress:

Depending on Almerin's response, I was thinking maybe your characters could cause a distraction that would allow Driscoll to move into the other room with the rug.

I'm not sure how to get out of this mess now that I'm in the room. I doubt I'll be able to sneak back to where your located, nor do I think I'll be able to get into the room on my own.

Alternatively, we could attack, again with you starting the combat, and me coming in from behind. But, I'm don't think that's the best option yet.

Anyway... what's your thoughts?

Topic: Haunted Highlands Q&A
Subject: Some "unofficial" responses from a helpful (hopefully) player

Nice background, Nomad D2! Very cool!

Saw your questions and thought I might help Hammer out. So, here are the answers to your questions as best as I can tell.

1. Money for equipment? I haven't picked much yet.

Hammer has said we can equip our character with whatever mundane gear we deem appropiate... within reason. I'm not sure that a chain suit would be appropiate (at 200 gp), but a scale mail is within reason (at 50 gp), I think.

2. Two swords at once? Longsword and shortsword. In Xenophobia deftness allowed both. Penalties?

There are rules for this in the combat section of the C&C PHB. Basically, anyone can weild two weapons at the cost of a -3 attk penalty to your primary hand and a -6 penalty to your off hand. Your DEX modifier helps offset this penalty. So a DEX of 16 (+2 modifier) would leave you with a -1 penalty with your primary hand and a -4 with your off-hand.

3. Half elf secondary attribute modification – if applied to dexterity – would it apply to armor class?

Good question! I don't know. In addition to that, would the secondary atribute modifier, if applied to DEX, also add a +2 to ranged attack rolls and help offset the two-weapon penalties? Hammer?

5. Lots of Chain stuff listed under armor usable for a ranger = Full Chain Suit?

No... it's not listed under the "armor allowed" section of the Ranger (pg 13). Well, actually, you could wear a chain suit, but then you couldn't use your ranger special abilities...so that would suck...

6. What do we do about Secondary Skills? – For example Oliander’s history suggests horsemanship.

Nothing listed in the book with regards to secondary skills. Everything in C&C is based off your attributes. I would imagine if it came down to it, if you needed to roll a "horsemanship" check, the DM may have you roll against your INT, or maybe WIS, and would add a situational modifier (in the ranged of +2 - +5, likely) due to your background.

7. How many weapons is he proficient with? I can't find that anywhere

He can use any weapon with equal proficiency.

Hope that helps!
