Topic: A Cold Day in Hell Q&A
Subject: Couple more questions...

Regarding damage: When should we get worried? What's the increments, and what do they mean? Can Denes suffer multiple moderate damages? Or is your system telling us how much total damage we've taken. i.e. Minimal = 85-95% Health, Mild = 70-85% Health, Moderate = 55-70% Health, etc, etc.

Regarding Rank & File/ Chain on Command: I'm not military expert, and I suspect most of us aren't, so I feel okay. But is it okay if Denes asks the Lieutenant questions? (i.e. "Do you want us to do a sweep of the room, sir?") Is chit-chat allowed as we move?

Which brings me to my last piece, regaring Equipment/ Gear: Can you (Olan) describe what we're wearing? What's protecting us from the cold? Protecting our face, our hands, our feet, etc? Also, how do we communicate with one another? How do we communicate with the other fire team? Hand sets? Head sets?

Thanks so much!

Subject: So much for "strapping farm-boy"...

It was f*@%ing Cold.

The wasn't really another way of putting. Despite the specialized arctic warfare suit the army had given him, Denes felt the cold dig deep into his marrow.

This is the type of cold you call with a capital C. Cold. Denes thought as his team made it's way to facility.

Cold was a much the enemy as anything else they'd face today, and as Denes felt his breath freezing against his protective gear, felt his strength being sapped out his veins, he knew he would have to be vigilant against this foe. Keep pushin', man. Keep pushin'.

Denes kept pace behind the Lieutenant, his trained eyes alert for hidden dangers. When they came to the emergency exit, the private made quick work of the snow drift blocking the door, eager for the shelter the research facility would provide.

Making their way into the facility, Denes nearly said a pray to the Lord Almighty for the blessings of heat. He didn't worry much about the alarm sounding off. Denes piped up, to noone in particular, "Hopefully, them scientists will be showing up in just a moment, tell us they need some help with their comm unit and show us to some good food, hey? That'd be nice."

Coming up to the Rec Room, Denes looked to the Lieutenant for directions. "Want us to do a thorough sweep of the room, sir?"

Subject: Fatigue...

Is that a REAL possibility though? Rest, I mean. Can we really "take five" and get rid of the fatigue?

A couple questions:

How long, game time, would one need to rest in order to get rid of the "cold fatigue"?

What would this rest look like?

Would the army supply their troops with some sort of standard "get-rid-of-fatigue" pill/ drug/ drink? I don't know, like, gatoraide? red bull?

In DnD, you'd just take a little sleepy-sleep... but it seems unrealistic in this game? Yes?

So how do we get rid of it?

If nothing else, you (Olan) have made it abundantly clear that hanging out outside for ANY amount of time is a bad and, possibility, deadly idea... thanks.

It does make me laugh that "strapping farm-boy" has a harder time shaking off the chills than "goth-chicky."

Subject: Enter... Tally!

It had been a busy week. An influx of visitors arriving on the lightning rail had led to business booming at her grandfather’s tavern, The Golden Tongues.

A special delivery from Zilargo had occupied the rest of Tally’s waking hours. It had been a quick job, a simple recovery of information for folks back home. But the work required a bit of advanced scouting before she could hit the mark.

So, while she had hoped to have met her “third” family, the Crimson Blades, for drinks earlier this evening, she had been unable to attend. Instead, she figured she’d be able to catch up with them back at their base of operations and hear about the new job offer that had come their way.

For the trip over to the Blades’ base, Tally had chosen the guise of a Gunther, dwarven soldier, a solid wall of muscle and steel… or… at least the appearance of muscle and steel. She hoped it would discourage the low-like cut-throats from bothering her.

Weaving her way to the apartment, Tally approached the door. She smiled as she saw light filtering under the crack of the solid wooden door. Drawing her key out, she unlocked it, and stepped into apartment, quickly closing the door behind her.

She turned and faced her companions with a big bearded grin, “Good evenin’, lads and lasses! Have a good night without me?”

OOC: Okay… well… here’s Tally! Only she don’t look like Tally at the moment. She’s used her Hairpin of Disguise to make herself look like “Gunther the Dwarven Soldier” – a solid, squat dwarf armed with a nasty lookin’ battle axe and a wooden shield. It’s a common disguise she uses, so you would probably recognize it.

Oh… and I edited your post Skari-dono, to state that the noise was coming from the front door. Hope you don’t mind.

Private 1st Class Denes Pearson was a man who strived to make the most of every second. Having arrived before the majority of his team, Denes had met briefly with Major Carrolton before being shown to the barracks. He smiled at the familiar sight. Don’t matter much where you end up… it all looks the same.

Finding himself one of the more sturdy cot (some just didn’t look like they would support the bear of a man), Denes efficiently sorted through additional arctic-specific gear he had received, and stored it with the rest of his pack he had brought with him.

Donning on the standard issue arctic fatigues and the additional protective clothing given for survival in this climate, Private Pearson invited Corporal Hart for a ‘jog around the base.’ “Just to get a taste of the air, y’know,” he said with a smile.

>>OOC: Vesper, you may choose to comment or not. Regardless of your response…<<

Truth was Denes was hungry, but knew that the lunch meal didn’t begin for another half hour. So he jogged to keep his mind off his belly.

Stepping outside, with his full pack on his back, Pearson picked up a brisk jog immediately. And immediately, the soldier could feel the cruel chill sting his lungs. He didn’t mind the feeling… just noted it.

He kept up his pace for a full forty-five minutes, making sure that he ended at the mess hall for a quick lunch. The food and coffee really hit the spot. Not that it was really different for the standard military fare… but it was warm. And out here, that meant a lot.

Making his way back to the barracks, Denes showered and dressed quickly before lounging out on his bed with a good western novel his had brought up with him. It was his guilty pleasure. Besides, Hart seemed preoccupied with his solitaire game.

When the lieutenant entered into the barracks, Private Pearson stood quickly to his feet, every muscle tense, eyes straight in front of him.

”As you were,” the lieutenant said.

Denes relaxed a bit, but continued to stand in front of his cot.

”Corporal Hart," he slid his gaze to the larger man as though it were on ice. "Private Pearson. Welcome to the team.”

“Sir, thank you, sir.”

"We haven't been together for long, and yet, we're being asked to perform like a well-oiled machine. I don't appreciate anomalies on my team, and right now, that's what the two of you are. I don't doubt that within the next thirty seconds or so Chief Blake will pipe up with the fact that she's got your files on hand for my review, but if there's anything you wish to share in the meantime, I expect y'all have about fifteen seconds apiece to do so. Fourteen...thirteen...twelve..."

Pearson allowed Corporal Hart to respond to the lieutenant first, seeing as the man outranked Denes.

When his turn to speak happens, Private Pearson gives the lieutenant a brief answer:

“Private, first class. Pearson. Grenadier, sir! Got my gear all packed. Charged and ready to go, sir!”

With Psionics... couldn't you just use the standard "full psionic/magic transparency" rule from the Expanded Psionics Handbook?

Can you give me a background as to the story line so far? I tried to look this game up but didn't find it. What's happened so far (or, at least, most recently)?

What do you imagine the next part of the story looking like? What's the premise for this next little adventure? How does the party know each other? Where do they meet? Who is calling them together? And for what purpose?

Posting requirements? Was is once/ week? More often? When do you update the game?

Is it possible to get a brief description of the characters confirmed in the game already? Personality, weapons/ tactics commonly used, exploits/ heroic deeds thus far?

Tome of Battle characters okay?

And could you give me a sense of the flavour of this campaign? Heroic? Dark and grim? LotR-esque?

Thanks!

I got a wedding reception tonight, so I'll try to plug away at a character when I get in... if I'm not completely exhausted from dancing.

Still not decided on a class yet, though I do like the image of trying to haul injured comrades to a hospital. Could be fun...

Now I'm really not so sure about what to bring to this virtual table.

We've got:

dark, brooding two-handed stealth fighter (Draven)
pretty, dangerous, assassin-esque house rogue (Nel)
pretty, pretty... I don't know... bard (Grugg's bad boy)
grumpy, don't touch me, two weapon fighter (Adysine)
and the token disabled, I'm blind but I'll knock your block off warrior (Philo's charry)

I'm seeing a gap in spellcasting something fierce... but I always play the spellcaster. grrr. lol

We're missing a Healer, an Archer (though Nel and Discq could probably cover this area), and an arcane battlefield controller. (probably the healer most of all. I doubt the bard will be able to keep up with healing the whole party)

Anyway... I'm torn. I'm choppin at the bit to try a ToB character. But a cleric archer seems like what we really need...

Comments on what the last charrie should be?

I'm bringing the Tome of Battle character. Unsure of the race yet. It will either be a Warblade or Swordsage (or combo there of)

Can you post the various Dragonmarked houses for humans, halflings, and half-elves? (or file share somehow the EbCS book).

Thank you much!

Hey, I noticed that you don't have anything regarding how we ought to generate our Ability scores. (maybe I missed it)

personally... I like a set number (somewhere between 85 - 90 points, is what I like). The elite set would be fine... but is a bit restrictive. Besides, I like the characters a bit more higher powered.

I find with the random rolled stats you get players with scores all over the map (from 76 pnts to 90-some pnts).

Anyway...just my thoughts... curious what yours are! (mostly, yours, SD!)

Gots me another question or two:

You are allowing all the races from the various "Races..." series? Can they have a level adjustment?

Also, will this be a one shot adventure, or are you planning us a campaign?

Grugg, what race are you looking at for your druid?
Kaelyn, what race is Nels again? Human, yes?

Yeah... so about this weekend.

I might... MIGHT... be able to get a character in by the weekend.... might.

However... I'll have trouble posting regularly until September. Same problem that I had with your other game... I might be able to score a post or two pre September... maybe.

So... how about this... If I can play right away, can I still have the same back history as the others, but I haven't been merc-ing with them... we just run into each again in <>.

What do you think?

I'm interested... but when are you hoping to start this deal-e-o up?

Also... are we looking at a fairly dark, sorta anti-hero campaign? I've read Draven in Al's game, and Nel in Bob's game. Both characters seem rather dark (and, with Draven, cynical) personalities... almost punisher-esque. (Correct me if I'm off...)
