Beylix, Newhouse, Emmett’s Bar, 11:10 am

Andrew walked into the bar and out of habit he scanned the interior. Being early in the day, the place was sparse on patrons; three men playing cards, a sleeping man who looked oriental, and a woman attending to some ‘maintenance’.

He walks to the bar as she rises and moved to behind the bar; apparently she is the bartender.

“Hi y’all. Welcome to Emmett’s Wha’ca ya like?”

Andrew took off his hat and rested it on the bar as he smiled and sat his bag down next to him on the floor.

“Howdy, Madam!” he says in a warm tone of greeting, “Give me a whiskey please.”

Andrew’s speech was lacking in the slang and Chinese colloquialisms that were common place out here in the Rim and Border Worlds; it was just one of the things that made him stand out among others. His educated tone and bearing revealed a person from the core worlds and seemingly out of place out here.

(Assuming she pours him a drink)

As he waited for her to get his drink he turned and looked over the room and paused to study the three gentleman playing cards. When his drink arrived he turned back to the bartender and pay her for his drink.

“You get many crew members from passing ships in here?” he asked the barmaid, “I’m looking for passage.” He says with a shrug and a handsome smile. Sipping the whiskey he tries not to make a face, he has had better and worse.

(After her response)

He thanks her and taking his stuff and the drink with him he walks over to the men playing cards. Sitting his stuff down next to empty chair he smiles at the men.

“Greetings gentlemen,” he says and gestures to the empty seat, “Mind if I join the game?”

He sits down in the chair and pulls out some of his credits and sits them on the table; raising an eyebrow he gives them a faint smile and waits for them to decide to deal him in on the next hand.

"Don't hurry to much we are going over to the blacksmith's first before heading back to the inn." and with that she walks out heading over to he large oak tree the shop where column of smoke still rises in the early evening sky.

Vatta raises and eyebrow and wonders at Brianna’s lack of reaction to her telling of what had transpired at the Inn and the departure of Lorae. She shrugs and follows Xuor and Brianna as they head over to the Blacksmiths. She didn’t have anything else to do right now and so she tagged along to see what they might find.

Subject: Sna'kti

The Simple Sod Tavern | Pardinal | The City of Portua | Claise 23rd, Teladay, 452ER, 6:00pm | Storming

Sna’kti looked up from his kidney pie when the door open, a grimace coming to his face at the blast of the storm coming into the Tavern. He had just started to dry off from having been soaked by the downpour and though he might be stinking to the others in the room he at least was starting to feel warm again.

The rain had soaked him completely and chilled him to the bone; the blast of air from the open doorway only caused him to shiver a bit in remembrance. Seeing four men enter wearing the livery of the City Guard he raised an eyebrow wondering the they were after him for something.

Sna’kti had been known to be on the wrong side of the law from time to time; a creature had a right to survive and often when times were hard he had to resort to unsavory methods of obtaining money. Though he doubted it was anything like that this time as Portua was home to him and he tried not to do anything that would entice the watch to come looking for him.

When they closed the door and walked directly over to his table he thought that maybe he had been wrong.

“You are Sna’kti Sarassi’ka?” the lead figure asked.

Sna’kti glanced up and looked over the head of the guard patrol. He was a man of average height and build with brown to nearly black hair as evident by his broom-bristle mustaches and deep five o’clock shadow. The bags underneath his eyes and the crow’s feet at their edges placed him at middle-aged. The sash across his chest gave him the rank of captain.

“Is there another Kazari about?” Sna’kti said softly between bites.

He didn’t like being interrupted during his meal, especially since he had already paid for it. He had used most of his last bit of coin for this meal and a bed for the night and after what he had been through the last few days he needed some rest and good food.

The captain narrowed his eyes at the dour question, but pushed into his purpose nonetheless. “You have been summoned by His Majesty and will attend immediately pertaining to matters of the utmost urgency. Your reputation precedes you…sir.”

Sna’kti glanced up at the Captain again and sipped from his mug of warm honeyed ale as he mulled over what he had just heard. His Majesty? Who had he peeved off now? Matters of utmost urgency? It didn’t sound like they were here to arrest him, otherwise there would already be fighting. It sounded more like they needed his help? It peaked his curiosity.

“I am eating,” was all he said as he turned back to eating his kidney pie, and slurping his beef and lentil soup.

(Assuming a insistent response from the Captain)

The Kazari picked up his mug and took another sip of his honeyed ale as he looked up at the Captain and the determination on his face. He weighed his options; he knew he could probably take these four men with a sudden hand to hand attack, but then what kind of trouble he would be in.

Sitting the mug down after draining the last of it, he stood up and wiped his whiskers off on his arm. He had decided that his curiosity had the better of him; he had to know what his Majesty wanted for him.

“Well his Majesty had best feed me,” he said as he started towards the door, “I don’t like missing a meal.”

He stepped out of the Tavern into the storm again and waited for the City Guard to lead the way.

Location: Under the Grey Mountains
Date/Time: Day Nine – Afternoon

As Siliwen prepared another spell just in case it was needed, she felt something strange; a tingling sensation on her chest. Looking down she sees the small golden dragonette amulet, given to her by Alacran, is glowing softly and intensifying. Where it touches her skin it tingles, but there is no pain even as it grows in brightness.

The Shelnak Leader turns his attention to the new threat, Billy and raises it’s iron stave to deal a powerful blow then suddenly pauses. It’s head turns and its gaze falls upon Siliwen and the glowing amulet; it is as if it can sense it’s power.

Suddenly the leader darts forward, rushing past Thon and Billy as it heads directly towards Siliwen. Billy pauses for a second at the unexpected move and then starts to turn to take a swing at the back of the Leader when suddenly the wedge of Shelnak shift. The Leader missing, another Shelnak steps forth and takes the Leader’s place at the apex of the wedge. It wields it’s own smaller stave and stabs at Billy causing him to go on the defensive and block the stave with his own sword.

Billy returns the attack with his sword and once again his blade bites into a Shelnak’s flesh and the new leader goes down; another steps forth to takes it’s place.

Just out of range of the Leader, Thon strikes out with his axe at one of the Shelnaks on the side and is rewarded with a solid hit that takes down another Shelnak. It seems that the shield that was protecting the wedge is no longer present; perhaps the desertion of their leader has weakened the power of the wedge.

Meanwhile, the Leader rushes towards Siliwen; Thor manages to load his crossbow and just looks up to take aim when he sees the Leader rushing at him; no not at him, past him. He fires his crossbow at point blank range as he dodges to the side to avoid the Shelnak’s charge. The powerful bolt slams into the Leader as it runs past; the hit staggers the beast but it continues onward.

Riddle sees the creature coming and heading right for Siliwen; he reacts on instinct and throws himself in between the Leader and Siliwen brandishing his two swords. The Leader doesn’t pause at it strikes out with it’s iron stave at the Ranger who attempts to block the lightning fast blow. Riddle however is unsuccessful with his parry attempt and the iron bar slams into him and flings him to the side. The blow is like a hammer, throwing him up against the wall and suddenly dark liquid from the gleaming rod splashes on Riddle as he hit’s the wall and slumps to the ground stunned.

Suddenly Riddle feels intense burning all over his body where the acid like liquid touches skin. Smoke starts to rise from his body as it starts to eat at his armor and flesh and his mouth to open in a silent scream of intense pain.

Siliwen watches all of this in stunned silence and when she sees Riddle slapped aside like a rag doll, she snaps out of it and with a gesture and a word sends her magic missiles streaking to slam into the growing visage of the Shelnak Leader. The twin bolts of energy slam into the creature and it staggers, appearing to grow weaker but still it comes on towards her.

Alea also watched as the Leader unrepentantly left the group and charge among them; when Riddle hit the wall her gaze was locked on him. She could see that he was hurt bad, and she watched as his body became covered with the strange dark liquid and then begin to smoke. She couldn’t hear anything over the roar of the falls, but she could see his mouth open wide in a scream and she knew that he was hurt bad. Instinctively she ran towards Riddle, she had to help him otherwise he would die.

The two dwarves in the rear of the group saw all that transpired before them, one ran towards where Riddle fell against the wall apparently intending to help him as well. The other, hefting his axe ran towards Siliwen and the Leader that was bearing down upon her.

(OOC: Ok new map below. Riddle is badly hurt and will surely die unless someone helps him soon. The Leader is badly hurt but is still pressing on towards Siliwen. Consider your actions carefully here. Next post next Saturday.)

The Professor

Port Newhouse
Newhouse, Beylix

The sun climbed high to noon as a tall middle aged man stepped out of the shadow of a Dragonfly class ship. Though the man appeared in his mid forties, he still had a rugged, brawny appearance; unruly auburn hair with a touch of gray at his temples; a large, full mustache, and deep penetrating hazel eyes were all traits that most women would consider handsome. The only blemish to his ruggedly handsome face was a thin scar from the outer edge of his left eyebrow down his cheek to the corner of his mouth; though even this minor blemish some would consider an asset to his ruggedness.

He turned to look back at the Dragonfly, Prospect, it said on the bow. He sighed heavily at the loss of the place he had called home for over a year. He would miss the old crew, Captain Sherman, Bennet, Mona, and Lewis; but he considered himself lucky that he was free to go while the others were still being held and investigated by the Alliance.

The ship had landed here in Newhouse only yesterday and been immediately met by Alliance goons who had ’bound by law’ the entire crew under suspicion of illegal trafficking in stolen goods. He had been set free only moments ago and after showing proof that his things had indeed been purchased by him and not part of the ships equipment, he had been allowed to leave with his possessions. He was sure that most of the crew would be cleared though the Captain would no doubt take the fall for the others; Sherman was just that kind of man who was extremely loyal to his crew.

Hefting his bag on his shoulder and setting his hat upon his head, Andrew Bowman turned and headed into Newhouse for the first time. He made his way past the Port Authority building and towards the center of town. He curled his nose at the noxious vapors emanating from what appeared to be a smelting operation; he knew that Beylix was a the junkyard of the verse and anything that couldn’t be sold was melted down and made into anything useful.

Making his way slowly up McClarrin Ave, named after one of the first settlers he had heard, he took in all the sights around him for he never knew when some little thing might come in handy. He walked past a couple of bars, one clean looking one called Planetfall, and another not so clean once calling itself Edgars’s Place. He wasn’t quite ready to settle into a room yet, he had some thinking to do. What was his next step. What work would he find here. He wasn’t yet sure he would find anything in Newhouse; his line of work was not usually plied in such places as Newhouse.

As he came to a small green area containing trees at the center of town, the tall man stepped aside as some town children ran by playing a game of tag. He smiled slightly at no matter how tough life could get children always found a way to make the best of it and find little pleasures where usually none was found.

He paused to look around the little manicured area containing three trees, the only ones he had seen thus far. A town’s folk looked over the obvious stranger as they pass; his build and manner of dress were something not normally seen in these parts. His clothes were a bit above normal for this scrap planet; tailored dress pants, a long sleeve dress shirt, a matching vest, a bolo style tie with silver clasp, and a tan broad brim, fur felt hat complete the ensemble. The clothes speak of someone who has known money and enjoys fine things but not to excess; a practical western gentleman and not some core world softy.

Making his way around the green sward, the man sees several buildings which are obviously government types, one from it’s opulence can only be the Mayor’s or Governor’s Mansion, and the ever-present local jailhouse. The presence of a man with a badge outside the last place confirms his suspicion of it’s function.

The lawman watches as the stranger walks by and gives the man a friendly nod and the once over as he passes. The deputy notices several things about the tall gentleman; a confident swagger that tells of a man able to handle himself, and the serious looking quick draw rig hanging on the man’s right side. A low riding holster holding what looks like a PK12 semi-automatic pistol and another revolver on his left hip in a cross draw holster.

The deputy knows trouble when he sees it and this man’s hardware and demeanor tells him this man is trouble walking into town. He considers stopping the man and asking him some questions, but thinks better of it since he is alone at the moment; as the man heads on down the street the deputy turns and heads inside the jail.

The stranger continues on, knowing that behind him the deputy had obviously been thinking of questioning him about his business here; it would happen soon enough.

The final two buildings in the circle were a hotel, Fu’s Palace, which he might check out later; and a bar, Emmet’s, which looked respectable enough so he decided to get out of the sun and perhaps get a drink. It had been a grueling 24 hours and he thought perhaps he needed one.

He walked into the bar and looked around the room as he headed over to an open spot at the counter. Sitting his bag down by his feet he slipped onto a stool and once he had the bartender’s attention he ordered a whiskey and turned to look around at the card tables to see if any games were in process; one never knew when your luck was about to change.

(OOC: ok.. Posted my pic for the opening post just to set the image. Hope my opening post is ok. I will get more into the character as things move along.)

Varuna nodded in satisfaction as the guards on the ground, save one, were put to sleep by Val’s spell. His spell was cast upon the tower guard in hopes that his crossbow bolts would be warped and thereby unusable. They have yet to see if it had been effective as the tower guard had yet to realize there was any problem.

The priest moved to the sleeping pirates and taking rope, either he finds or has on him, he will bind the sleeping men and remove their weapons. He will leave the lone awake ground sentry and the tower sentry to the experienced warriors in the group.

While Varuna bound the men he made sure the binds were tight; he had to restrain himself from wanting to do further harm to these men knowing what these degenerates had done to the helpless lighthouse family. Visions of the blood and the children flashed through his mind as he tugged tightly on the ropes; yes he made sure the bonds were very tight.

(Yeah! Movement! I love it! )

Peacekeeper had taken up position at the intersection, her weapon leveled down the hall immediately inside of the foyer while Bull’s Eye dropped to a knee and peered down his sights along the length of the adjoining hall. Firewind found himself standing in the doorway, the unfamiliar grip of the submachine gun in hand as the door to the guard’s booth opened and MDK appeared.

“Which way?” Jaimy said over her shoulder as MDK appeared.

MDK hefted his HK and nodded to Peacekeeper gesturing down the hallway to the left.

“That way,” he says quietly from behind his mask, “but stay close and be alert there are guards on patrol.”

(In collaboration with the GM)

The assassin then led the group down the hallway and past a couple of intersections, halting them occasionally as guard patrols could be spotted down the hallway. He seemed to know exactly when the guards were approaching and in which direction they were going.

Finally after a couple of turns this way and that he brought them to a doorway marked ‘stairway’. The door lock buzzed as he reached for the handle and he gestured them all into the stairway.

“Croaker is on sublevel 3,” he said as he took the lead again heading downward.

They make their way down past sublevels 1 & 2 until they come to a door marked sublevel 3. MDK stops outside the door and looks at everyone as they assemble in the landing.

“This door will open,” he said in a whisper, “but beyond that we wont know what is coming as this level is blanked out to surveillance. We will encounter guards and the cakewalk we have had so far will no doubt come to an end. Be ready! Strike Hard and fast!”

He waited a few seconds for any sort of response from the others, then hefting the HK and making sure a round was chambered and the safety off he turned back to the door.

As he reached for the door suddenly everything changed, alarms began to sound throughout the facility, apparently something had happened that had the entire place on alert. MDK didn’t hesitate though as the alarms blared, he grabbed the handle and the buzz of the lock opening was hidden by the noise.

The dark assassin opened the door and entered; on the other side of the door was a hallway headed straight ahead that ended at a heavy firedoor. On the left was a 20’ x 20’ alcove containing a bank of two elevators, a drinking fountain on one wall, and two corporate guards who are holding their weapons and looking about in wonder at the sudden alarms.

MDK doesn’t hesitate again, he sweeps through the doorway, heading directly at the guards, his HK coming up and opening up on them with full auto as his targeting systems lock onto the two men.

His large body is a temporary shield for the doorway and anyone coming through it as he makes a straight line for the guards. Anyone coming through behind him will be able to get through the door and spread out to provide their own fire it they so desire.

Lorae gives Vatta a quick glance. "I will go after him. It is not safe to go alone. I will try to bring him back."

Lorae races outside, where Moon Dancer stands saddled and ready in a way that marked him as a paladin's mount. No matter how fast the Druids horse might be Lorae's stallion was soon in Julius's dusty wake.

Vatta turned to watch as Lorae hurried out of the tavern; she gestures haltingly to the bartender, “Hold on to that wine, I will be back later for it.”

She stepped out of the tavern and saw Lorae riding fast out of the town; she knew Lorae didn’t need her help with bringing back the man, if he could be brought back. She glanced around the town and as the sun was getting down she saw many of the lamps being lit about town.

Looking up and down the street she saw Brianna and Xuor enter a shop; the sign outside showed a bow and arrows and she raised and eyebrow. She had planned to wait till the morrow to by her arrows but seeing as the shop was obviously still open she shrugged and stepped off the porch and walked towards the shop.

Walking into the shop she saw Xuor and Brianna purchasing some items, she nodded her head to them and smiled slightly as she walked over to a rack where arrows were displayed. Seeing the quality she was pleased and when the woman is done with her sale to her companions, Vatta tells her that she needs three dozen of the broadhead shafts and though the price is higher than normal she feels it is worth it since they are fine strong shafts.

Paying for her purchase she turns to Brianna and Xuor and follows them outside when they are finished. Once outside she tells them of Lorae heading off after the stranger and the man’s plight concerning Tilverton and his son.

Thon still stood next to the leader of the Shelnak wedge and after watching two of his men dispatched so easily, he was still not discouraged by the apparent lack of their weapons to damage the wedge. The dwarf’s mouth was wide in a silent battle cry as he swung his great dwarven axe at the leader. Shock registered on his face as the steel rang off of the invisible shield causing a great red flash on impact.

The rebound of his weapon caused him to stumble back a couple steps; this little stagger saved Thon’s life as the leader of the wedge stabbed his iron stave down at the dwarf but missed because of the dwarf’s sudden misstep. The leader’s stave struck the rock ledge and a flash of red force thundered throughout the cavern overpowering even the roar for the nearby waterfall.

Their previous attack thwarted, the rest of the group stood defensively waiting as the large warrior, Billy, charged up to the Shelnak leader and swung his great sword with all his mighty strength. Billy’s stroke seemed to be guided as he swung and the sword passed through the invisible shield as if it were not even there. He felt his sword bite hard into the leader’s abdomen and the entire wedge seemed to shiver and buckle as it took a step back in surprise.

The Shelnak leader recoiled and looked down at the gash in it’s side in what could only be described as shock and fear. The entire wedge moved backwards a couple of steps as the leader turned it’s attention fully upon the warrior who had injured it.

Alea, seeing Billy’s attack succeed, looses a single arrow at the leader but her attack meets with the same result as before, striking against the shield which turns the arrow to ash.

Thor was about to step forth and take a swing himself since Billy was successful but when an arrow from behind him failed to penetrate the shield he held his attack figuring it would be useless since the shield was still in place and only Billy’s sword appeared to be able to penetrate it.

I think the idea of being a friend of the family would work best… I don’t think the direct family relationship will work considering the history that has already been done and presented with my character.

A short history: My character is middle-aged and was born and raised on Bellerophon to a rich and well-to-do family. He had many professional friends and acquaintances before leaving it all behind to roam the Border and Rim worlds.

So in keeping with my history, I think the friend of the family would work well. If the character is young, maybe my C could have been a friend of their parents or uncles, etc.

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, let me know. I am anxious to join and I am sure my C would join in a share of the profits rather than working for a set pay.

As the wedge of Shelnaks advanced the three dwarfs in the front charged at the wedge to keep it away from the party it was assigned to guard. Three heavy dwarves battleaxes sliced through the air towards the Shelnak leader standing tall at the front of the huge wedge. The razor sharp blades however did not meet with dark flesh, instead the rang off of some invisible shield which flashed red and became visible during the fierce impact of the blades and then faded again.

Next daggers of light streak from the middle of the group as Siliwen lets lose with one of her distance spells. The light bolts fly towards the head of the leader but they too encounter the barrier and cause it to flash red for a brief instant before fading again into invisibility.

The Shelnak wedge pauses as it is attack to deal with the three dwarves in front of it, much like a great beast stops to swap at a mosquito bite. The leader swings his long iron rod left and right at the two outside dwarves; the one on it’s left raises his axe to block but the force of the blow knocks him backwards several feet to crash into the cliff face to the party’s right. The dwarf falls writhing in pain as he falls to the ground covered in a dark viscous liquid which covers almost his entire body.

The dwarf on the right attempts to duck but is caught by the iron rod on his shoulder and the party watches helplessly as the dwarf is flung up into the air where he sails over the edge of the ledge and down into the dark abyss below the roaring waterfall.

Alea’s prayer is heard and the Blessings of Corellon grace the remaining members of their party and she tries to yells to the others to fall back but not even she can hear her own voice over the deafening roar of water. Her bow fires twice but meets with the same flashing barrier as the other attacks have met and they have no effect.

Seeing the effect of the attacks, Riddle draws his two swords and takes a few steps forward to place himself in between Siliwen and the wedge. He does not advance but waits for the Shelnak to come to them. Seeing the lack of effect of the attacks thus far; he tries to think of some way to attack them that will allow them to get through the shield guarding them.

Thor pulls his crossbow and fires; the heavy bolt a blur through the thick air. The dwarf watches as it meets with the same fate as the other’s attacks and gasps in horror as one of his kin disappears over the edge and another lies withering on the ground apparently in great pain. Seeing their attacks have no effect, Thor tries to gesture to all to move back and he reaches out to grab at Billy as the large warrior hugs against the cliff face.

Billy however is obvious to the dwarf’s attempts to move him as he stands rock still against the wall away from the drop off; he appears to be in a trance of some type.

Billy moved to the wall as he wished and as he stood there, his large sword in his hands and appraised the formidable for before him, he heard a voice. It puzzled him at first, he couldn’t hear anything but the roar of the falls, yet he was hearing a voice in his head.

“Warrior,” it said in a soft feminine voice which was only a whisper at first but grew louder with each word until he could hear it clearly, “listen to me! You can battle these creatures, you can defeat them, you can strike a blow against the leader where none other can. Be not afraid! Turn and attack the leader! Let your weapon guide you and you shall be victorious!”

The dwarves at the rear of the party were aghast at the loss of one of their friends and the wounding of the other. They wanted to join the attack at the front, but with the party in the way, they held their ground waiting knowing that their leader would not want them to leave their position as rear guard. For if they were attacked from behind they must not be cut off from an avenue of escape if it was needed. Though the dwarves stand ready at the rear, there is room if the party wishes to retreat through them to the path from which they came.

(Ok, I cant update the map right now since I am still traveling, but I will give you one as soon as I can. Remember, no one can hear anything you say so all communication must be by signals. As usual, if you have questions, please use the Q&A thread.)
