Subject: Misunderstandings... and understandings!!

Romo having heard the threat in the Corporal’s voice in the word ‘motivate’ blocked his way to the door long enough to quietly pass along a warning of his own.

“Corporal you lay one hand on her and I’ll make sure you face an article hearing once we are back in allied lines. We are American soldiers not Nazi’s. You hear me Corporal?”

Brutal looked surprised at the Sarge’s comments and he nodded to the man, “Aye Sarge… I didn’t intend to do anything without orders… was just suggesting… it your guy’s call on what course we take.” He shrugged and went on outside to fetch the Doc… and have a word with him too.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jack glanced to door where Brutal was still posturing, “The well is behind cabin Jake, I still need some water for this lady.”
Brutal looked over to the Corporal and smirked again, “Be my guest.” He made no move to get any water or anything.. he was the Doc.. let him get his own damn things.
"Get the man some water, Corporal. Gives you an excuse to double check if we're alone." The Captain said to Brutal.
Brutal glanced at the Captain then back to Doc.. and smirked.. here he was starting to think the Captain might turn out to be alright.. and he takes Doc’s side in this.. well he was learning how things were and who he could trust.. he had started out thinking the Doc was an alright guy.. useful in a fight maybe.. but now he was seeing that the man was a know-it-all loud mouth that would get them all killed.. and his first impression of their Captain seemed to be proving right as well.
“Aye ‘Captain’” Brutal said as he walked into the back area of the cabin and grabbed a pitcher of water left on the counter.. he grabbed a dirty rag from the stove and then walking over to the Doc he dropped them both unceremoniously on the floor.. the pitcher splashing water around but somehow staying upright.
“There ya go, Doc.” He said with a smirk, “earn your keep.. for once.”
Without another word or waiting for a reply .. he left to go outside and look around for any signs of danger that the Doc might have missed.. he gave McGuiness a wave and signaled that he was going to reconnoiter the surrounding area.
“No offense sir.... I mean Mr Bowmen... I mean Andrew..but you’re a guest on Rocinante and family to the Captain, if I let you get hurt I would be in deep Kimchee with him worse then I am right now and he would have my ass. I’ll do the e-vac but I’m still gonna need your help.”
Andrew stopped in the hallway and took Wolf’s arm to halt him, “Listen.. I’m aiming to be part of this crew… and just because I’m family to the Captain should be no never mind to putting me in danger.. iffin my help outside either alone.. or to assist you out there.. will get the job done and quicker.. then that is what I aim to do.” He let go of Wolf’s arm and look at him with a raised eyebrow, “So are we good or should me disturb the Captain with this minor matter? I think he has enough to worry about at the moment.. don’t you?”
Andrew waited on Wolf’s reply but from his stance and demeanor it was clear that only Wyatt’s order would silence him on this matter.. and he was waiting to see if Wolf was willing to bother Wyatt with this issue.
Doc looked into Brutals cold eyes and in a calm voice said,
” Save your bad ass attitude for scaring the woman and children. You’re just lucky that was the only Kruat, and lady killed him for you. Now go find a bucket of water and rag so we can make nice with lady.”
Brutal didn’t stop the Doc as he pulled away and went inside to do as ordered.. instead he smirked alittle.. he had to admit the little man had guts.. not very bright.. but guts.
He stood guard inside the door.. making no move to follow Doc’s instructions.
Jack glanced to door where Brutal was still posturing, “The well is behind cabin Jake, I still need some water for this lady.”
Brutal looked over to the Corporal and smirked again, “Be my guest.” He made no move to get any water or anything.. he was the Doc.. let him get his own damn things.
I am still very interested in continuing this game... any hope of getting a couple of people to take over the characters that lost their players? Maybe continue after the Holidays?
Really liking this game so far.. anxious to see what else lies in store for us.
SO please.. lets see if we can get some players to fill those shoes... I sure Keeper and Eol are still in it... ~shines his Surefire 6PX Flashlight (200 lumens) into the darkness~ Come on out you two... speak up!
"So it seems, Corporal." The Captain replied with a friendly smile towards the lady.
"Now, get Doc in here so he can look after the Lady's cheek. I'm sure he'll be able to help it from swelling."
Brutal nodded and then moved to the door... he saw Doc returning from behind the cabin looking less than excited.. so he figured he didnt find anything.
"Captain wants you inside," he told Doc, "he wants you to tend to the lady." There was a undertone to Brutal words... a hard tone when he spoke to Doc.
As the Doc moved to enter the cabin Brutal stopped him by grabbing his arm and looking the man in the eyes... he spoke in a low menacing tone.
"You screwed up Corporal," he said his teeth clenched, "you compromised us earlier when we approached this cabin."
He was obviously talking about Doc's outburst about their plan on breaching the cabin and how he disagreed with it and didnt even know what the plan was in fact.
"You ever do something like that again and I will bury you. You got me!"
His last words were more a statement than a question... he moved to let the Doc pass and then signaled to their sniper out there that everything was alright and then he stood just inside the doorway so he could keep and eye on things inside and out.
“Not good… “he said with a sigh and look at Wolf, “I take it you have spares?” His tone was hopeful yet also carried a hint of possible denial .. in his past experience he knew that ships like this one.. much like his last ship .. seldom carried much in the way of spare parts.. the money just wasn’t there most of the time.
“Not for the Aft Alternator no sir Mr. Bowmen. As for the Grav Dampener I’ll have to check ship’s supply, I’m headed there now, then I need to suit up and check the outside of the ship. I could use the help to carry it or any other parts if we do have them and to watch my back when I go outside the ship....”
“I would be glad to assist you,” Andrew answered as he followed Wolf, “and as I’ve said before please call me Andrew.” He smiled slightly as he followed to help him look for parts and to assist in whatever way he could in checking the outer hull of the ship.. he had a thought and then spoke it as he walked with Wolf.
“Maybe I could go outside and check out the hull,” he said with a shrug, “your services might be better served here inside making repairs… I think I know enough to spot a problem without if it exists.” He smiled slightly.. he would admit he didn’t know these systems as well as Wolf.. but he wasn’t a novice at things like these.. especially electrical problems were more in his area.
(Edited to adjust for Tann's edit and also to add a last minute thought )
Having searched the small cabin and reported on his negative findings.. Brutal stands by watching and covering their prisoner.. lovely though she may be .. she was still a kraut.
The Captain moved closer to look at her. Not considering the language difference he says to her, ‘“Look lady, we don’t want any trouble... scratch that... we do want trouble, but just not with you. We need to find Castle Rautenberg. Do you know where it is?”
Brutal was watching her closely and he too noticed the lack of confusion in her eyes that should have been there if she had not understood the Captain’s English… he turned and glanced at the Sarge and Captain.. he saw to his amazement that the Captain had realized it too.
“She ‘sprakens’ English .. Captain,” he says with a faint smile at her that he purposefully let shift into a threatening one, “I think she can tell us a lot… if properly ‘motivated’.”
(Yes I know I misspelled the word Sprechen… hey Brutal doesn’t really speak German.. sure he over heard the word someplace )
Enroute to Lullabelle Mine, Day Eight 9:30 am Ship Time
“But,” Andrew said to Wyatt with a faint smile, “I’m not one that should be preaching to you. The past is just that.. in the past.. it is what you do now that will decide who you are… and who you will become... I just hope I’m allowed to stick around and see that.. if you be havin me stay aboard that is?”
He noticed Wyatt’s uncomfortable posture and wondered at the necessity of this conversation.. one that had been painful for both of them no doubt.. he had hated to bring it up.. but it had to be done one day and he thought better now and get the tension over and done with and go on with their lifes… maybe they could both heal together.
There had been no thoughts of hugs, or shoulder slapping, or anything of that nature.. that was not Andrew Bowman… and he knew for sure that Wyatt wasn’t the kind of man who would go for that sort of thing either.. he could tell in the uncomfortable silence that followed that Wyatt was struggling for something to say or do... he seriously hoped it wasn't going to be a hug....
*Pop*
He felt it reverberate through the deck and stood even as the lights went out and he noticed the ever-present sounds of the ship were instantly silenced.. even as the emergency lights came on he turned and headed out of the galley as Wyatt turned to the intercom.
"Someone mind telling me what's going on?" He heard Wyatt say.
“I think I better head to the engine room.” He murmured to the Captain as he left headed back to where he knew he would find Wolf no doubt already tracing down the problem.
Arriving in the engine room he noticed the charred smell in the air…. The smell of ozone and burnt insulation... he saw Wolf looking into the Trace compression block and hurried over with long steps.. glancing in.. he cringed at what he saw.
“Not good… “he said with a sigh and look at Wolf, “I take it you have spares?” His tone was hopeful yet also carried a hint of possible denial .. in his past experience he knew that ships like this one.. much like his last ship .. seldom carried much in the way of spare parts.. the money just wasn’t there most of the time.
Brutal didn’t understand the gibberish that Romo laid on the woman.. he wished the Sarge hadn’t burst into the cabin past him.. he was slightly to the side but if Brutal had needed to fire the Sarge might not have liked how close he would have been to the business end of the scatter gun .. but it seemed that whatever Romo had said to the beautiful woman seemed to have the desired effect.. he watched as she lowered the crossbow to the side.
He straightened up and stepped more into the doorway now.. he looked about and seen no one else inside.. he turned his head to the shouted commands from the Captain and answered him in a lower tone.
“She appears to be alone,” he said then glanced at the body laying at his feet, “now!”
He spotted Doc moving around towards the back of the cabin to check it out so he moved on into the cabin.. his eyes searching for any sign of hidden dangers yet keeping his eye on the woman as he moved up near here and leaned down to pick up the crossbow… not taking his eyes off her. . hefting the weapon he moved away from her as he went past to look around the back of the inside of the cabin.
As Wyatt related what had happened to his wife and daughter… Andrew Bowman’s eyes closed and his head lowered as he listened.. by the end of the tale.. a couple of tears could be seen lining their way down his rough tanned cheeks.. he reached up and wiped them away before opening his eyes to look at Wyatt and sighed.
“I’m sorry you had to relive that,” he said, his pain and sympathy evident in his tone, “but I had to know what went on. And by my reckoning… you did what had to be done. I doubt those hell spawn had any relatives that would be missing the likes of them… and if they did.. they were probably better off. “
“As to the war,” he said with a shrug, “what you did there was what happens in all wars… it is unfortunate but whatever side your on … the result is the same.. death and mayhem... It is unavoidable. Nobody wants wars... well no sane people anyway.”
“But,” he continued with a faint smile, “I’m not one that should be preaching to you. The past is just that.. in the past.. it is what you do now that will decide who you are… and who you will become... I just hope I’m allowed to stick around and see that.. if you be havin me stay aboard that is?”
He waited for Wyatt’s decision.. the crew didn’t seem to have a problem with him that he had seen… but they might have said things to Wyatt without showing their true feelings… he liked this ship.. and he liked being out in the black… he would try to help out where he could and an extra gun around was always a good thing nowadays… but time would tell what would happen… and what the outcome would be.
(p.s. Don’t mean to step on Willow’s post.. but in my previous post I has stated that Andrew happened by and told Willow about Pearson and the dead man.. but I can play it either way.. let me know if I should remove it from my post )
I would say that Andrew has never seen a Reaver. But I rolled a die and decided that he did arrive once at a outskirts settlement after a "supposed" reaver attack and saw the aftermath. It has left an impression on him. He believes in them and wisely decides to avoid them whenever possible.
Just to clarify.. reading others posts after mine seems to believe that Brutal entered the cabin.. he did not.. he stayed outside.. on the left side of the door.. using the doorjamb as a shield.. what little it is.. and his face is visible to the woman along with the shotgun below it aimed at her... the meaning to her should be clear even if she doesnt speak English.
He doesnt want to shoot her but if she doesnt stop doing what she is doing.. assume he will not hesitate to shoot her.
Andrew Bowman is glad when he feels the deck of the ship vibrating as it takes to the air.. and once the familiar sound of the ship as it enters the black is a welcome thing to him.. he smiles slightly.. and sighs.. as he walks through the ship to familiar himself with the layout.
As he passed the Medical bay he heard Willow exclaiming at finding a dead body in her bay.. Andrew enters and clears his throat to announce his presence.
“I’m sorry…” he said at first looking at the blanket draped body, “ it is a fellow named Chad who I believe is one of your passengers. Deputy Pearson shot him … in the back… as the man was running in the town.” The anger in his voice at recalling the act can be clearly heard.
“It was thought best to return him to his home,” he said with a faint shrug, “I’m sorry that no one mentioned it to you earlier.”
After that brief encounter he returned to strolling about the ship.
Andrew gets to know the crew as the trip continues… he seems very friendly and cordial … though he has an edge to him that shows he is not afraid to voice his opinion at any time. He helps out Wolf working on the Rocinante’s systems, and even Trish seems to like him… she even manages to convince him to call her Ma.
Andrew is surprised when he finds out in talking to her that her real name is Patricia Wilmont… (I assume that here real Identity is not a secret.. read the history and couldn’t find a mention of it being hidden.. if it is.. let me know and I will modify my post to remove this part) .. of course he knew of her… who his age didn’t know of her.. he had seen her perform even when he was younger… his family being rich helped him to be exposed to the finer life in the alliance. He didn’t ask about what happened to her… and he didn’t show any pity for her condition… he knew from experience that was the last thing most people would want especially from strangers.
By the time the trip is over.. all of the crew know exactly who Andrew Bowman is in relation to their Captain… Andrew doesn’t say much about it.. to the others.. but one time.. when he gets that sit down with Wyatt.. he brings up the unpleasant situation that he knows Wyatt probably doesn’t want to talk about.. but Andrew doesn’t really know the details… and so he asks.
“Can you tell me what…. What happened Wyatt?” he asks with pain evident in his voice as they sit in the mess.. him sipping some coffee.
Brutal smiled at the kraut that appeared in the doorway and took a step towards the opening.. He saw the man’s eyes widen slightly as he caught sight of the shotgun aimed at his head out of the corner of his eye… but before anything else could be said or done… the man convulsed and Brutal jerked back slightly as something burst through the man’s chest … he was surprised to see a arrowhead sticking out of his chest as blood spurted and then the coughed blood and then collapsed at his feet.
He glanced at Romo and seen him staring into the cabin… Brutal turned and using the doorjamb as cover he aimed his shotgun into the cabin showing only his face and the barrel of the gun.
Seeing a beautiful woman… the source of the scream he assumed … and seeing her reloading a crossbow he aimed the shotgun at her and said… in English … “Hold it Fraulein.”
He wouldn’t shoot… and didn’t want to shoot… unless she gave him no choice … he hoped she understood enough for either English or his intent with the gun to stop what she was doing.
Brutal nodded at the Sarge’s orders and then slipped up next to the door noticing which way the door would swing open… most door on houses would swing inward… and most door handles were on the right hand side… therefore.. he took up a position on the left side of the door.. so that when the door opened inward it would help to provide some cover for him if shooting did start.
If someone opened the door and stepped into the doorway to talk to the Sarge… Brutal would point the shotgun at the man’s head.. still staying back out of the doorway… so that anyone in the room wouldn’t see him there… if the person notices him he will simply smile and gesture with the gun and make a silencing gesture.
He wont make any action unless the guy does… if the man doesn’t abide by his signs to remain still and silent.. brutal will attempt to bash him in the side of the head with the gun barrel and then try and grab the guy and whirl him around and use him as a shield against the ones inside… a hostage as it were… but in doing so he will pull the guy out of the doorway so that their sniper still would have a shot past if he the need arises.
Almost absent-mindedly Wyatt gave a wave towards Andrew. "Willow, this here is Andrew Bowman. He's family. Andrew, Willow. She's the ship patch-R-upper."
“Eloquent as ever I see Wyatt,” Andrew said with a smile and then tipped his hat to Willow, “Nice to meet ya Ma’am. My pleasure!”
The captain was curious about Andrew's whereabouts these past few years. He'd obviously heard about Summer and Eden, but what else had he heard? What were his plans? What were his assets? Was he in need of assistance? Wyatt hadn't left his wife and daughter; they'd been taken from him. That meant that Andrew was family by default and it warranted any further assistance Wyatt could offer him. So, once the captain found him, he spent a little while catching up, and filling Bowman in on their current gig. He left out pretty much everything having to do with the crazy family of Alliance-reared criminals as he figured that boat had sailed, but he let Andrew know about their current route and the possible dangers involved.
Andrew had listened intently as Wyatt had explained the situation here on Rocinante and their current job… he didn’t say anything or ask any questions as he figured anything Wyatt wanted him to know he would have told him.
"Look," Wyatt finished as he turned back to Andrew before exiting the room. "There ain't much room aboard this ship right now, but once them passengers are safely away, there's plenty should you decide you want to stay on. I'm captain, but this ship is owned by the lot of us, and that means that I'll need run a permanent addition by the rest of the crew, but it don't seem like they'd fuss over you stayin' on. You'd like the Kid, and i think you'll get along well enough with the rest of 'em. So..."
Andrew nodded as Wyatt seemed finished with what he had to say… he rose from where he had been seated as Wyatt seemed ready to leave the room.
“No problem Wyatt,” he said with a knowing smile, “I will try to stay out of the way of your crew… and don’t worry… I don’t foresee any problems with anyone on-board… well least not with your crew.” He remembered Pearson was aboard and figured that he had as much ill feelings towards the man as any other of the crew who had witness the cold-blooded murder in town.
“Once things are settled we will talk further about the future,” he paused then added somberly, “… and the past.”
