…Caise had been recalling one of Trask’s lectures and, in this instance, he could not help but quote some of the elder Jedi's words. "For it to be so small a thing," he said, regarding the mechanic as he strode towards Jaal, "the tongue is one of the most difficult things in the galaxy to hold, is it not?"

Ziv blushed with embarrassment; apparently Jedis had superior hearing as one of their abilities. He cleared his throat and turned and slipped away to look over the R45s, running his hand along the sides as he listened to the others talking. He was thinking about what he could do with one of these old R45s; maybe tweak it a bit and see how fast they could go.

As Jaal spoke of taking them to his plantation, Ziv turns back to them and quickly speaks, perhaps interrupting some of their group who might be responding to Jaal, “Sounds great!” Hoisting his work bag containing his equipment and anything else he could salvage from the crashed ship, he looks ready to get into one of the speeders and get out of this place before someone else arrives; someone not so friendly.

What? What comment? Why Ziv would never.. ah.. ok you got me.. damn Jedi hearing

OK. I know it is out of turn but I just had to post something, it shouldn’t interfere with anyone else’s actions so I hope it is alright. Ziv just had to react to the Jedi’s comment.

He nods. "I'm Jaal Darand, from Darand Plantation. This is Jeena and Umalad," indicating the blonde human female and the ithorian in turn. He looks you over and frowns. "You're offworlders, right? That means you don't have any real way around... where are you headed?"

Ziv too recognized the trails of landspeeders as they became visible but he only nodded his agreement with Merc’s assessment. Seeing a couple of friendly looking humans exit the vehicle he slips the blaster pistol that was behind his leg into the back of his waistband and returns their smile. Before anyone else in his group speaks, Ziv steps forward and offers his hand to Jaal, “My name is Ziv and yes we are offworlders, a navigational error,” he lowers his voice, “...damn pilots…” then continues in a normal tone, “caused us to crash and we sure could use your help getting to the nearest civilization.”

Jeena has climbed out to take a place beside Jaal when apparently, he gets a good look at Caise for the first time. "You're a jedi, aren't you?" he asks.

Ziv glances at Caise and lowers his voice and leans over to Jaal while still looking at Caise and says in a slightly disappointed tone, “Yeah.. that’s a Jedi… not what you would have expected is it?” Ziv shakes his head.

Hearing a chance at some action, Vatta spurred her horse up next to the Paladin’s magnificent mount and nodded at her mention of friends needing help.

She listened to Cerric’s offer of help and nodded again, then thought to add, “I would like to accompany you in helping your friends…I mean if they are in battle now they might need all the help they can get.” She knew that she sounded anxious but she couldn’t help herself, the sooner she got to kill orcs the better.

She thought about her eagerness for killing, why was she so driven here to enter the fray? Normally she tried to avoid fighting when she could; after all she was no warrior. But the last few months had been boring without any sort of action and now being face with the real possibility of danger she jumped at the chance. Still, she felt as if something was driving her and she couldn’t explain it.

She sat anxiously on her horse waiting for The Lady Lorae to tell them hopefully to accompany her on her journey.

Vatta made it back to the Inn where she was staying and quietly slipped up the outside wall and into her third story window which she had left unlatched so she could get in again since the main door was certainly barred at this time of night. Closing and locking the window behind her she unburdened herself of her bow and quiver and set it in the corner before she collapsed on the bed with a heavy sigh.

Things had not gone as expected. What had she gotten herself into here, a mage and dark shadowy creatures chasing her? This was not what she had signed up for here. There was something going that shouldn’t involve her but somehow she had gotten involved and no doubt Grabel and the mage would want her dead now that she had over heard them. Not that she had any idea to what object they were referring but the mage certainly seemed to think it was important.

Why had she gone to check out the light, curiosity again? It had gotten her into more problems before and it seemed….. She paused in her thoughts as she sat up… ‘what was that?’

A noise, a scrape of some kind and it came from outside her window.. she got up and inched closer and peered out from the side… suddenly she was jumping back as a large hand with long talons crashed through the glass and narrowly missed her face. She stumbled back and fell on her behind and scurried backwards towards the door to the hallway as she stared wide-eyed at one of the shadowy beast men from the warehouse trying to climb in the window.

She got a much closer look now than she did in the warehouse and saw that the creature was slightly larger than a human male with large muscular arms ending in hands tipped with long razor sharp looking talons. Its head looked much very ape like but with a larger mouth lined with very dangerous looking teeth. How had it followed her? She had left her rope and hook there so maybe it had used that to track her scent.

The creature appeared to be stuck for a moment as it found the window too small for it’s large frame. As the creature reared back outside and began to tear at the window frame so it could enter the room, Vatta came out of her shock and got up whirling to the door and escape. She unlatched the door and bolted into the hallway as she heard the window being ripped out in her room. Glancing up and down the hallway she saw the stairs going down at one end and an open window at the other end. She chose the window and sprinted for it as the crashing from her room continued.

She slid to a stop at the window and glanced out and saw the top of the next two story building only about 10 feet away. She glanced back as she stepped onto the ledge crouching and saw the beastman come crashing out of her room and look around for her. His red eyes glared into her and he growled with hatred.

Vatta didn’t wait any longer and turning she leaped from the window ledge to the next roof top and flipping in the air she came down on her shoulder and rolled to her feet and used her momentum to continue running across the rooftop.

The beast saw his quarry disappear out the window and it launched itself in pursuit down the corridor. Just then a door opened and a man came out with sword in hand to investigate the ruckus. “What is going on here?” He bellowed and before he knew it the beast flung him aside with one hand as it passed, laying the man’s throat open with its sharp talons. The man slid to the floor of his room choking on his own blood as his life ebbed.

Vatta glanced back over her shoulder as she printed across the rooftop towards the next and saw a large shadow fly out of the window and land on the roof halfway to her. Cursing she sprinted as fast as her little legs would carry her towards the next adjoining roof.

She could swear she could feel the creature’s hot breath on her neck as she leaped to the next building and ran for her life with the creature seeming to gain on her. The roof she ran across here was flat and was decorated with a few chairs, a lean-to held up with a couple of poles and a small garden. Someone’s private get away spot no doubt. She dodged around the lean-to cover and nearly tripped over the chairs as she continued towards what she hoped was the next rooftop.

She heard a loud crack behind her as the creature didn’t even bother to dodge the lean-to but swiped it aside with one arm, splintering the poles in two and sending them scattering across the roof.

Vatta reached the roof edge and slid to a stop as she saw that she had reached a street and the next roof was too far away to leap so she whirled and drew her rapier. She stepped up on the roof ledge behind her as she panted trying to regain her breath as she waited for the creature. She didn’t have to wait long as she saw the beast plow through the small garden and hurl itself at her.

Her sword poised she waited till the last possible second and leaped upwards… she flipped in midair over the back of the beast as it flashed by below her headed over the edge of the roof. She tumbled when she hit the roof and came to a stop among the remains of the garden and glanced back gasping from the ground as she saw the creature disappear over the ledge with a howl of rage.

Vatta sighed as she stood slowly and sheathed her sword, walking to the edge she looked over the edge for she wanted to see the crumpled body of the creature on the street below. She jerked back; the creature wasn’t lying dead on the street stones, but was clinging to a window ledge just one story below the roof and she had seen that it was starting to climb back up. Wouldn’t this thing give up?

She looked around she had to hit the thing with before it reached the rooftop. She spotted one of the poles belonging to the lean-to that the garden over had used for shade when relaxing up here. She ran over to it and hefted it easily and turned to the ledge in time to see the taloned hand crest the lip. She balanced the pole and ran at the creature hoping to catch it in the face as it pulled itself up. But she wasn’t ten feet from the ledge when the creature propelled itself on the roof ledge and growled at her showing it’s large teeth. With hardly a pause the beast launched itself at her talons extended to rend her throat.

Vatta ducked her head and put all her strength into putting the splintered end of the pole in between her and the beast. A jarring impact flung her to the ground and she lost her grip on the pole as she was sent spinning across the roof to come to a stop among the scattered dirt of the former garden.

She shook her head, having almost lost consciousness, and looked up and saw the beastman withering on the roof with the pole protruding out it’s back at least two feet. It moaned softly and clutched at the pole and weakly tried to pull it from it’s body, but it’s strength was waning.

Vatta stood slowly and drew her rapier as she walked towards the beast and with a single thrust through the throat she ended its struggles. She wanted so much to collapse right there on the roof, but she knew the noise up here couldn’t have overlooked by those below.

She was startled when the creature on the roof before her suddenly disappeared in a loud flash of smoke which drifted off into the night leaving nothing but the pole laying there. She cursed and sheathed her sword again and quickly found her way off of this roof and headed back to her Inn.

She would have to be careful back at her room, surely the City Watch were there and would be asking a lot of questions. She would claim ignorance and say that she was out and didn’t know what happened. She would gather her things and get out of there as soon as she could. She would have to find another place to hide out; someplace a lot safer than an Inn while she contemplated her next move.

Opening the hatch to the outdoors brings the smell of ozone and the pinging sound of cooling metal - the exterior of the lifeboat is still extremely hot. A quick once over reveals that the only way that the shuttle will ever move from this location will be due to the diligent work of dedicated scrappers - the bottom third of the craft is buried beneath the soil, and the entire starboard stabilizing fin has been raggedly shorn off in the crash. Indeed, a small assortment of metallic pieces lie scattered inside (and to either side) of a gulch dug into the ground by the momentum of the lifeboat.

Ziv looked over the remains of the shuttle as he made his way out of the craft and shakes his head, “This wont fly again.. “ Stating the obvious. He does manage to grab his gear and anything else he see inside that might be of use and that he can easily transport. He makes sure to hang on to the now dead bothan’s blaster Pistol, it might come in handy again.

As you file out of the shuttle, you are treated to a fairly large expanse of undeveloped land. A slightly purplish sky, dotted only by the occasionally wispy could, stretches high above. It is warm right now, but not overly hot, and a steady wind blows in from the east. Tall grasses sway in the breeze, and only a few odd trees break up the landscape.

Caise tries his commlink, but gets no response. Perhaps the range is too great, or the frequency is incorrect?

Looking around at all the barren land he continues to shake his head, “Out of the frying pan…” he mutters. He turns and watches as the one jedi tries his commlink without apparent success and just shakes his head. Planetside is where he feels the most useless and especially out here in the middle of no where.

Turning to Lana he smirks slightly and says softly, “I don’t have a clue as to where we need to be..,” mocking the Jedi’s statement , “.. but I’m pretty sure it isn’t here.”

Discussions are made as to how to proceed when Damanil spots a small cloud of dust on the horizon. Realizing the implication, he points to it. "Someone is coming," the red haired soldier states.

Hearing the former TDF soldier words, Ziv turns to look and spots the cloud of dust and after a few moments of analyzing it’s speed and direction he says, “Yeah it seems to be coming this way.. and fast too.” He hefts his blaster rife and checks it power pack, still good and holds it behind his leg and waits for the others to decide what to do. He is no soldier and is out of his element out here, but any who know him can tell that he can be fearless when it comes to fighting.

Subject: Tortured Rear!

Varuna rode uncomfortably upon his simple riding horse for though he could ride decently he did not ride often and found it rough upon his posterior. After the six long weeks the backbone of this horse, purchased for a small fee in the first town on their journey, felt like a rusty jagged saw blade cutting him in two. Guiding the reins with his left hand he absently fondled a necklace that hung around his neck with his right hand; a golden thornless rose about three inches in length, the holy symbol of his order.

The decision to join this group had not come easily, he had heard them out and prayed upon the decision and during the night he had a vision, obviously from the Sacred Mother, that told him the journey was a just one and that his services to the group would be needed. But after six long arduous weeks upon the back of this steed from Hades, he wondered if he had done something to offend the Goddess and earned her punishment.

His was not to question her motives so here he was and he had indeed been needed as their journey had been ripe with peril at many turns. While his service to the Goddess did not allow him to use weapons that drew blood, he had shown that his ball mace was very effective at cracking the skull and bones of those Slaa’kar that attempted to waylay their group. Normally he would have prayed for their unfortunate souls, but he wasn’t sure the lizard people even had souls.

Varuna listened to the true Sylvari speak and he only nodded having nothing to add as his eyes studied the town just ahead. By now they would have learned that Varuna said little but when he said something he usually had something he considered worth saying. But he had no idea what the object of their journey might be and he didn’t much care except that his Goddess had desired his presence and therefore the cause was good.

During the journey he had learned to trust those around him. All of them showed their bravery and goodness time and again upon the road and he had come to accept that his Goddess’s decision had been correct, not that he ever doubted it for a moment.

At the Gate

Not having much money himself, giving most of it the needy people, Varuna thought the entry fee for the town exorbitant thus he had to protest a little to the Guard.

“My good Captain,” he would begin knowing he was talking to a Sergeant, “I am but a poor Priest of the Sacred Mother, Lysora.. Goddess of Healing and Provider for the needy and being such we are not allowed much in the way of wealth… Might I beseech upon the kindness of your heart to let me pass without paying said fee and I promise that in return I will pay back that entry fee in triplicate to those within your fair town.”

He spoke reverently and with all modesty and hoped the Sergeant of the Guard would let him pass, but if the man was adamant about him paying the fee, then Varuna would reach into his meager pouch of money and withdraw the required amount and pay without any further fuss.

Riding into the Town he was impressed with the level of cleanliness of the town and he guessed that perhaps the entry tax was being put to good use afterall. He guided his mount along after the others content in his role to follow those in charge of this mission, though he couldn’t wait to get off his torture rack some called a horse and rest hoping they wouldn’t turn right around and leave again right away.

Topic: The Erstwhile Adventures of Vatta Silestia
Subject: Trouble Brewing

Vatta watched the warehouse from across the street from deep in the shadows of an adjacent building. She had been there for over an hour after having checked the building for all sides and choosing this side as the best accessible avenue. After an hour observing the windows on this side, she had seen no signs of movement.

Having waited long enough, she took one last look up and down the street to make sure no one was on the darkened street then she slipped out of the shadows and to the other side. If anyone was watching all they would have seen was a blurred shadow that quickly blended from one side of the street to the other.

She paused to listen for signs of alarm, hearing none she unslung her rope and hook within moments she was on her way up the wall to the second story windows. A few moments later she had the window opened and was slipping inside after pulling up the rope and securing it on the ledge outside the window.

Inside the tall two story warehouse Vatta found herself on the level of support beams crisscrossing the warehouse about 15’ above the floor. On the 6” wooden beams, the agile thief walked as swiftly and confidently as if she were strolling down the main street. Her eyes scanned the floor below watching for guards or any other signs of life.

She sees only a large open floor dotted with stacks of crates, barrels and sacks of all sizes, a typical warehouse from all appearances. Against the back wall she spots a large room that could be an office so she heads in that direction.

Dropping deftly to the ground without a sound, she studied the door before her. A sign on the door said “Van Grabel” and Vatta smiled and she hardly broke stride as she picked the lock and slipped in the door. She found a rather modest with a large desk, a couple of tall cabinets, a table littered with items and a couple chairs.

She lit a lantern on the main desk and began to thoroughly search the desk, cabinets and everything on the table. After an hour of searching, she found several ledgers on shipments of goods but all belong to Van Grabel and had no mention of her client.

She frowned as she began to put everything back where it belonged. She hadn’t expected to find the ledger here as it wouldn’t have been the safest place to store a valuable piece of blackmail against a competitor.
Blowing out the lantern she glanced once more around the room then headed to the door. She paused as she heard voices out in the warehouse, she silently cursed as she realized she must have taken too long in searching. Listening, she could tell that the voices didn’t get any closer and so she clacked open the door and peered out. Seeing a light on the far side of the warehouse, the same direction as the voices, she slipped out the door and relocked it. In a moment she had run to the wall and quickly scaled its rough surface and was securely back amongst the rafters.

She looked at the stationary light in the distance and listened to the voices which she couldn’t make out and then glanced at the open window through which she entered. Should she see what was happening or get out while she was still undetected. Her curiosity won and she glided along the beam and headed towards the lit area.

Now crouching on a rafter just outside of the area of light she could see two men standing in the pool of light cast by a single lantern. One man was Van Grabel himself, and the other man she had never seen before. He was dressed in robes and she sensed a strange eeriness coming from the man, an aura of magic almost exuded from him. He was human, just past middle aged, bald and clean shaven; giving all the signs of a user of magic and she had to wonder why Van Grabel was meeting with him here secretly in the dead of night.

“You don’t understand.. I cant deliver it because I have not yet received the shipment,” Van Grabel was saying as they came into her sight.

The mage snorted, “That is not my problem… you promised shipment today and it isn’t here,” He replied with obvious contempt and disregard for the merchant’s problem. “You had better not be holding out on me.. cause if you are.. the consequences will not be pleasant.”

Van Grabel straightened at the threat, “You know I wouldn’t do such a thing.. and I don’t care for your threats.. you will have it in a few days.. so just be patient.. what will a few more days matter?”

“A few days can change everything,” the mage fairly shouted, “you don’t understand that everything must proceed on schedule or everything is….” He paused and looked at the back of his right hand and suddenly he whirled and looked around the warehouse.

“Someone is here.” He said in a lower tone to the merchant.

Van Grabel started looking about and Vatta thought it was time to leave. She didn’t know how the mage knew she was there but she didn’t want to wait. As she slipped back along the beam the mage began speaking some incomprehensible words and gestured, she moved quicker for she knew a spell when she saw one.

Before she had gone more than a few paces the mage pointed up into the rafters and shouted, “There.. they are up there!” She glanced back and saw the mage waving his arms again and suddenly their was a pop in the air that hurt her ears slightly and suddenly there were two more shapes in the warehouse.

Dark, bestial looking forms came out of the shadows and looked up towards her. They were larger than humans and heavily muscled with large teeth and red eyes and they immediately leaped from the floor to the beams and started after her.

Vatta let out one of her more choice curses and raced along the beams headed for the window, the large beastmen chasing after her closing on her. She didn’t know if she was going to make it, they were large but very fast and she knew that if they caught her they would rip her limbs easily from their sockets.

She doubled her effort and could swear she could feel their fetid breath on her neck as she leaped at the window and snatched the rope as she sailed through into the night. The rope jerked and her momentum swung her back to slam into the side of the warehouse and she let the rope go and fell to the ground only 6 more feet below and was on the run as her feet touched the ground.

Glancing back she saw two shadows watching her out the window with large red glowing eyes. She didn’t know why they didn’t follow but she was thankful for it no matter the reason.

The mage snared at the two beast and with a wave send them back into the shadows, and turned to Van Grabel, “Whoever it was has overheard us.. they must be found.”

The merchant nodded, “I will have some of my men…”

“BAH!” The mage interrupted, “your men are useless.. I will handle this myself…. Just tend to the shipment. I want it by tomorrow… or else.” He turned and stalked off leaving a slightly stunned merchant standing in his warehouse.

Topic: The Guiding Light Q&A
Subject: Varuna Casan - Priest of Lysora

(Ok so I came up with the brief history and description below. Hope everything is ok. Will have character sheet tomorrow hopefully. )

Varuna Casan is a half breed, half human/half elf, who was abandoned on the steps of a temple of Lysora in Coria when only days old. A note was attached to his clothes explaining that his mother couldn’t keep him because of prejudices in her village against elves and asking the Priests of the Sacred Mother to care and protect the boy.

The priests of Audalis’s Goddess of Healing didn’t care if the boy was of mixed descent and raised him and taught him their ways and when he became old enough to chose, he prayed for days and finally was granted a vision of the Goddess and was therefore accepted into the Reverent Lady of Spirit’s service.

He was a young priest when he left the temple and began his journey into life, spreading the word of the Sacred Mother‘s benevolence and compassion. He travels now seeking to heal and help those less fortunate and to spread the word of his Goddesses great power.

Varuna can often be found in poor areas, or in places where battles have been fought, helping those who are injured or displaced from their homes. He asks for nothing in return, those most give what they can in goods, he accepts only enough to sustain his life and carry on with his mission.

Now 23 years of age, a mere youngling for his race, he appears as an average height human looking man whose mixed heritage can only be ascertained when his slightly pointed ears protrude from beneath his shoulder length brown hair. His dress is common for one of Lysora’s followers, leather breeches and studded leather armor covered with a white, worn, knee-length robe with light blue trim sporting a thornless rose embroidered upon its chest. A large brown floppy type hat adorns his head, beneath which resides a somewhat handsome and gentile face with deep set green eyes. A large ball mace hangs from a leather belt with several belt pouches which hold the tools of his trade.

Vatta smiles and nods to his response, “It is as I suspected.. You didn’t seem to be infirm or incapable.. and I imagine the quest for knowledge would include the knowledge of defending oneself and others from harm”

She smirked at a thought then said with a wry smile, “But if your knowledge in this area falls short .. don’t worry I wont be far away.” Her smile broadened to him showing that she was once again teasing him. She would indeed protect him as she had stated if the need arose but she thought she might need his unique magical talents before this was over.

She looked around at the party and the surrounding terrain, looking for places where they might be ambushed. Places where the trail might narrow the land might rise and give an enemy higher elevation from which to launch a surprise missile barrage. As she had told Cerric, she wasn’t fluent in large scale battles, but she knew ambushes and surprise tactics and how to spot them.

Wondering how much longer it would be to where they were headed, she couldn’t help but feel a little anxious for some action. Since coming to this area she hadn’t had any jobs or anything else to excite her sense of adventure. She hoped that was about to change soon.

Subject: The coming battle!

Vatta smiled at his words… Mercenary? Noble? She chuckled slightly, “You truly have a way with words Priest of Oghma; you would make a Great Orator.” His words did seem to break her out of her awkward mutterings and she relaxed a bit as she realized that he was trying to spin her profession into a good light. She didn’t mind that at all, actually she would have to remember what he had said to recall it in the future.

When he spoke of tactics she changed demeanor entirely and her stern face showed that her mind had now turned to the coming battle.

“Skilled in killing you mean… yes .. but large scale battles are a bit unusual for this ‘noble vagabond’,” she smirked in jest, “but killing orcs is mostly a public service for the general populace.. and without sounding boisterious .. I do it quite well indeed.” She didn’t tell him that while she detested orcs in general, such filthy creatures, she didn’t hate them as many of her race. She saw orcs and their constant raiding on others as a necessary thing in the grand scheme of life. Death was something that everyone must face eventually, as she was fond of saying: ‘No one gets out of life alive.’

This time it was personal though, these orcs were killing Tel’Quessir (The People), as Elves referred to their kin, and she didn’t take that lightly. While she didn’t care for the way most humans lived their lives, scurrying about like insects and not caring about what they do to the world upon which they live, she found them tolerable and generally they accepted Elves living among them. Even though her people lived a long life compared to others, they were generally not as prolific as the other races, such as human and orcs. Sometimes an Elvin couple might only have one child to rear and the death of any Elf was a tragedy to the clan.

She looked over at Cerric and asked, “I assume you have some battle experience.. or are the Priests of Oghma pacifists?” She looked him over and while she might not see a warrior before her, she had dealt with Priests and Wizards enough to know not to misjudge them by their appearance, for if you did it would often be the last time you made such a mistake.

Vatta’s smile lit her face brightly at the gaze of the Priest for while she knew she was beautiful by any standards she seldom saw men who seemed taken back when they looked at her. Human males seemed especially vulnerable to her beauty, she wasn’t sure but thought that they found Elvin females to be somewhat exotic and this added to the allure. While she was flattered by what she saw in his gaze when he looked at her, she was glad when he recovered himself and told her of his deity.

“Oghma, Lord of Knowledge,” She repeated thoughtfully. “I like that.. It sounds truly noble and gracious… surely the Priests of Oghma can be found among the most wise and intelligent of men,” she says sincerely.

When he asks of her profession, she chuckles and turns her head to scan the area briefly before returning to look at him. “True, everyone must arm themselves in such times,” she says as she looks ‘sdown to see the swept hilt of her bone handle rapier protruding slightly from beneath her cloak.

She sighs slightly before answering about her profession, trying to put it as elegantly as she can so as not to offend the noble priest sense of righteousness, “You might say I sell my services to those in need…I… I try to help people when I can.”

She found it difficult to talk about her profession for what could she say; that she stole things when required, that she often spied upon people and learned their secrets, or that she killed when it needed to be done, all for money.

She turned away saying nothing more, for while the Priest gave his services freely to those in need she often required payment. Oh she had done a few favors or helped out those without means to pay her, she considered those her good deeds, but most of the time what she did was illegal.

Cerric could no doubt sense that she seemed almost embarrassed by her own words as she looked everywhere but at him, as if he might see the truth in her beautiful amber eyes.

Vatta rode along watching all around her and studying everything, but even that could not alleviate her boredom. She could be very patient when things required her to be, such as when she had to stay in one uncomfortable position for up to an hour at a time in order to avoid detection, but the tedium of the journey was anything but exciting.

She turned to look at Cerric upon his magnificent animal, which wasn’t a nice as the Lorae’s but it was still one of the best mounts she had ever seen, and asked him, “So, Cerric…. What deity do you worship? Is he or she a healing god, or one of war, nature, ah.. Drinking…. What?”

She usually considered talk of religion to be mundane but anything was better than listening to the constant clopping of the hooves of all the mounts and draft animals. If she didn’t have some actual conversation then she just might not be able to bear this journey much longer.

Vatta had missed the whole mount summoning of the Priest which was of no real consequences actually; she would have found the sight impressive but she had little real care for such magic. The only kind that mattered was the type that could help her and her compatriots, such as healing and those that dealt damage to their enemies. All other types just seem for show to instill a sense of awe in others about their ability.

Vatta smiled at the Priest greeting and nodded, she took a liking to him as he seemed genuinely nice and wanted to help others so his patron deity much be one of good persuasion. She didn’t know much about the gods, having little use for them herself, which is why she showed no recognition when the Lady warrior declared herself a ‘Paladin of the Light’.

She knew what a Paladin was, a holy warrior serving their gods desire, and she had met several in her time even adventured with them when the need arose. Her lack of faith in the gods often made her wonder if the Paladins were only deluding themselves with their beliefs and what they served and why; she only shrugged inwardly at the thought as it didn’t matter to her. The Paladins she had met were all stand-up and fight kind of people that you wanted by your side when things got rough, which they often did when they were around.

Vatta sat atop her horse waiting for instructions on where they were bound and what was expected of them. She had kept the hood of her cloak back as this was no time for concealment and she wanted to be able to see in all directions as she rode; it was often useful to spot trouble when it arose. She would follow the Paladins lead and be always alert and ready at a moments notice to bring her bow into play if needed.

Subject: The Plan

It was late afternoon as Vatta stood in the shadow of a doorway of a building and watched the business warehouse of Gant Van Grabel and waited for the man to leave for the day. She had picked up her fee earlier in the day and had began work right away by learning where the Grabel merchant house was located near the Southgate only a block from his client’s business. It seemed that most of the merchant businesses were located here being near the town market, it only made sense.

She had checked out all sides of the warehouse and noticed several ways which might give access and while not guards were visible she was sure they would be present inside the building. She waited now for Gant Van Grabel to follow him and find out where he lived for she really doubted that the man was dumb enough to keep the blackmail ledger here are his place of business; it was more likely stored away in his home or some other secret place yet unknown.

She busied herself while she waited by watching all the people scurry around the city. Consisting mostly of humans, they ran here and there intent on some errand, always in a hurry. Well she figured that perhaps since their lives were so short that maybe they wanted to get in much into it as possible. Maybe, maybe not.

She glanced around and spotted Grabel as he left the business with two armed escorts, interesting she thought as she slipped out into the throng of people and followed them. The streets here were teeming with people making following them without notice quite easy.

They left the Market area and entered the South ward of Westgate, the area where most of the merchant nobles of the city held residence. Here she had to be more careful as the traffic thinned and would make someone like her more noticeable to those she followed. They seemed to not care if they were being followed for they never glanced back once though the guards kept a eye out for anyone getting too close to the merchant.

Vatta stopped when the trio entered the walled are around a rather large three story mansion, she nodded her approval, ‘Grabel seems to be doing quite well for himself’ she thought. After 10 minutes she made a slow circuit of the walled structure locating all entrances and sentries; returning to the front she shook her head. The place only had two entrance, the main one and a smaller servant entrance in the rear for kitchen deliveries and servants, the wall was tall and was no doubt hiding guards on the other side. She spend 10 more minutes studying the place, every visible window, chimney and ledge then still shaking her head she slipped off back the way she had come before someone spotted her and wondered what someone dressed like her was doing in the rich quarter.

Headed back towards her Inn, which was only a few blocks away, she started to run her plans around in her head. She would need some time to think , but she thought best with a drink so reaching the Inn she slipped into her usual table and order a meal and some ale and began to formulate her plan. As she sipped her ale waiting on her meal, her first thought was that she would try the warehouse first, it would be easiest and who knew the merchant might not be as smart as she thought, but she doubted she was that lucky.

By the time the meal arrived she had already decided that tomorrow she would check out the warehouse again from every angle and then tomorrow night she would attempt and entry and search it for the ledger. She hoped for a quick easy solution, but her luck had not been good lately and she sensed this was not the time for her luck to change.

She bowed her head at the Elfin Warrior’s acceptance of her offer and smiled, “Diola lle (Thank You)” and rushes off towards the Inn where she rushes in and bellows at the owner to have the stable boy ready her mount. She rushes upstairs before he has a chance to answer, enters her room and begins to pack the few belongings not already in her saddle bags and backpack.

In minutes she is ready and rushes down the stairs and the owner tells her quickly that her horse is out front ready to go. She tosses another gold piece to the owner, “Thank you and good fortune to you.”

Rushing out the door she finds the stable boy waiting with her horse watching all the commotion in the town with wide eyes. She throws her saddle bags and backpack on her horse and ties them down to the back of her saddle. Checking her mount with a practiced eye she tightens a strap or two and then tosses the stable boy a silver piece and quickly hops into the mount.

She turns and trots her horse over to where the Elvin lady is and introduces herself to her and the Priest, “I am Vatta Silvestia.”

As she waits for everyone to be ready she straps her quiver on the right side of the saddle and lashes her bow on the left where a simple pull of one leather strap will free it for immediate use when needed.

Looking at the Priest she grins slightly and says, “Don’t worry Priest, I’ll guard your back.”

Vatta moved closer through the crowd of people and listened as the Priest spoke to the Female Elvin Warrior and smiled at another wager won; if only she had someone from which to collect these wagers. Most Priests that she had met were good natured and always jumped at the chance to help others, this one was no exception.

While Vatta had nothing against helping others, risking her life without reward was usually considered foolish. Vatta’s ears perked up hearing the Warrior woman speak; her voice stirred something in Vatta, something that compelled her to step forward when the Lady accepted Cerric told the Priest to ride with the others.

“Vedui',” Vatta says to the Lady as she reaches up with one hand and draws back her hood revealing her elfin face; she bows slightly keeping her eyes on the Lady. “Tel’Quessir are in danger?” she asks sounding concerned. Sight of the Elvin warrior has sparked a sense of loyalty in her to help protect her people if possible.

If the Lady confirms that elves are indeed in danger, Vatta will look thoughtful for a moment and then look at her and nod, “My bow and sword I offer to help if I can.”

Vatta looks over at Cerric again and smiles, “Perhaps I might be of service protecting the Priest while he heals and .. stuff.” She smirks and gives Cerric a sly wink to show she is joking, but maybe only partially.

Hearing the bells, Vatta slips away from watching Cerric and moves towards where she can watch what is going on. When the people start to gather she moves out of the shadows, though still covered in her cloak and hood, and stands next to the Inn and leans on the wall watching all the proceedings.

She stands up straight seeing the Elvin female warrior and on a Moonhorse as well, most curious. Here thoughts of investigating Cerric and his purpose are forgotten for now as she listens to the call to arms of the locals.

Orcs? She despises the filth vermin and all their ilk, but she ponders if she should get involved. Such a thing hardly seems profitable to her, she has no holdings here, nothing she need defend. Orcs killing people, ones unknown to her, seems hardly work her notice, but… it could bring some excitement.

Listening to the soldier bellowing and mentioning of going with the extraordinarily tall Elvin female warrior causes her to consider it, but still…

She looks around and waits; obviously well armed and more able than most of the farmers and such in Ashbenford she wonders what would happen if she doesn’t step forth to aid. She smirks and decides to find out.

Glancing at the Priest she watches to see what he will do, join them no doubt after all he is a Priest.
