When they got to where ever she was taking him, he deposited his bag on the floor out of the way and turned to Ma, “Thank you very much Ma’am! I hope to not be too much more of an inconvenience than I have already been.”

"All crew to the cargo bay, pronto." Came over the ship’s intercom.. Sounded like Wyatt.

“Sounds like something serious,” Andrew said as he subconsciously dropped his hands down to this guns to check their readiness.

“Guess we better hurray eh?” He added with a faint smile as he headed back towards the cargo bay.

“You think we can still pull this mission off Sgt? I mean, there are only 5 of us and the Capt…. Well .. he doesn’t strike me as being the right man for the job.. you know what I mean.”

With Clements words spoken Romo stopped dead in his tracks and whirled on the corporal.

“I’ll have none of that Corporal, the Captain’s in charge and that’s it. If he says we continue the op, we continue the op and let me be clear on this you will follow his orders to the letter or you will deal with me. Trust me CORPORAL Clements you don’t want to go there with me. Now lets finish up so we can get gone from here as the Captain wants.”

Clements looked Romo in the eyes for a moment and then with a faint smile on his lips he nodded, “Sure thing Sarg, I understand... just voicing my concerns is all.”

Brutal had respect for the Sgt; he was a hell of a fighter… he was someone you would want at your back when the shit went down. Romo’s were the orders Brutal had no problem following, though he still had doubts about the Capt.

Finishing their job and returning to the others, Brutal handed out the lengths of parachute line he had salvaged to anyone who wanted them… he had bundled them and tied them off neatly so they would be easy to stow and take up less room.

With the few meager supplies gathered and the weapons from those poor saps who hit the ground even harder than Brutal had were laid out… it didn’t seem like much.

He stood with a carbine in his hands waiting for orders as he scanned the treeline for any sign of the enemy.. he knew they had to be out there… the ME’s would have radioed the position of the crash.. and probably the possibility of survivors… some of the chutes must have been spotted by the pilots… it could only be a matter of hours .. or less.. till these hills were crawling with Germans

Newhouse, Beylix, Inside Rocinante’s Cargo Bay, 1.20 pm, Day Three

Ma watched Wyatt go with the news of Willow when she heard a voice. “Good day,” Andrew says softly with a smile, “Sorry I hope I wasn’t interrupting anything.” He gestured with his head towards the retreating Wyatt’s figure. “Just looking for a place to stow my things; names Andrew Bowman, Ma’am.”

As Ma turns, Andrew can see that the elder lady is horrible disfigured in the face and neck area. Not fire or wounds, but it seems like half her face is melted and unable to reform. She bows her head and draws her hood over her head at meeting Andrew and merely nods politely. Then she beckons with her finger to show Andrew where he can store his things.

Andrew follows the disfigured woman through the passages to where ever she intended for him to bunk… he silently wondered what could have caused her disfigurement.. he wouldn’t ask.. such things weren’t for him… he was sure that somewhere along the line.. if he stay on long enough.. would become known to him.

“I wasn’t eavesdropping or anything back there,” he said gesturing back to the room where she had been conversing with Wyatt, “it was just that Wyatt seemed a bit upset and voices have a tendency to carry in these passages when they are raised in anger.” He smiled slightly.

“I heard Wyatt call you Ma,” he continued, “I assume that is a nickname… probably cause you take care of them no doubt.” The last bit wasn’t quite a question but had a lingering question-like ring to it.

When they got to where ever she was taking him, he deposited his bag on the floor out of the way and turned to her, “Thank you very much Ma’am! I hope to not be too much more of an inconvenience than I have already been.”

Subject: A 'Brutal' situation

“OUT! JUMP NOW!”

Cpl Jake Clements, or ‘Brutal’ as some men called him, didn’t hit the deck when the 20mm slugs ripped through the plane’s fuselage… instead he stood up and barked orders to the Privates under his wing.

“You heard the Major,” he barked, “hook up and to the door… move.. MOVE!”

He turned to grab the arm of a cowering private on the deck at his feet and dragged the man to his feet.

“Move Jensen… you worthless piece of …”

He never got to finish his insult of the man’s bravado as a round from the ME-109 cannons ripped through the man spilling his guts out onto the front and splattering the man’s blood all over the front of Brutal.

He dropped the dead man to the deck and whirled to the door himself.. He flung himself out without even hooking up to the static line… he trusted to himself to pull his own chute.. A habit he had noticed Sgt Romo also practiced… he hated the jerk the line gave him and he always thought he would be slammed up against the tail of the plane and be stuck there if his line failed.

He fell through the darkness trying to gauge his height before pulling his cord… not wanting to hang in the air and be a sitting duck for any ‘Krauts’ on the ground… his timing was a bit off.. his eyes bugged as he saw silhouettes of the trees below.. He yanked his cord and felt the snap of his lines and the belts dug into his groin at is rapidly slowed his descent .. He crashed through the branches below with considerable force… but miraculously his chute didn’t hang on anything.

Hitting the ground hard, he rolled over a few times and then came to his feet with a groan… he checked himself and realized .. Other than a few bruises and scrapes .. He was alright.

He cut loose his chute .. Gathered it together and hoisting his gear on his back and with his carbine in hand.. He looked around and spotted movement as someone else was moving through the trees.. He recognized Sgt Romo and smirked slightly.. He was glad Romo made it.. He respected the Sgt .. More than he had any other so far.. especially any of the officers.

When they met up with the others.. Cpl Clements wasn’t too happy to see that Capt. Edintore had made it down.. he didn’t trust officers in general.. most didn’t know their ass from a hole in the ground.. and so far Edintore hadn’t shown himself to be any different… but without the Major this would be the first time he had seen the Capt in charge.. so maybe the man would grow a pair and prove his worth.. or not.

“We should move.” the Capt said once they were all gathered, “I don’t want any Nazi’s to know we’re here though. Romo and Brutal, snatch those chutes from the trees. Doc and I will find some branches and leaves to cover them with. McGuiness, find a high tree to climb and find out what you can about our position. Let’s hurry, people!”

Romo turned to Clements “You heard him Corporal lets get those chutes”

With his own chute already in hand, Brutal moved with Romo to gather those of the others. Once they were out of earshot of the others, and gathering the chutes for burial, Jake spoke to Romo quietly.

“You think we can still pull this mission off Sgt?” he asked looking back at the Capt and the others, “I mean, there are only 5 of us and the Capt…. Well .. he doesn’t strike me as being the right man for the job.. you know what I mean.”

(Conversation here.. Will backpost if needed)

When they had all the chutes, Brutal took out his large combat knife.. a favorite weapon of his that he kept strapped to his right thigh.. and cut off several of the lines from the parachutes... he knew the line was strong and could support the weight of an average man.. it might come in handy later in getting into this castle... he took enough to give each of them up to a 20' length (if possible).

(Note: not my idea but I thought it was a good one so I incorporated it into my post )

Once they were done buring the chutes and rejoined the others.. Brutal took stock of their small group as they tried to decide which direction to go.. he didn’t know since they seemed lost… other than the Capt and Sgt… there was the medic… the one they called ‘Doc’ … he seemed capable at his job… though he tended to curse unnecessarily … not that Jake minded… he cursed himself when the situation warranted… but ‘Doc’ tended to make it a matter of every conversation … the other was Private McGuinnes… a sniper … that might come in handy … Brutal was no slouch of a shot himself… but he knew he was no sniper … the man might prove very useful if they were to survive.

All in all … they did seem to have the basics covered… if only the leadership was a bit more trustworthy … but time would tell if they would succeed in this mission and in their lives as well.

(Sorry I havent posted sooner.. out of town for the Holiday weekend.. the best I could come up with at the time. )

Newhouse, Beylix, Outside Jailhouse, 1:00 pm, Day Three

Ken sighs deeply, “Mr Bowman. I hope you found the work you wanted. I think it would be best for all if you got to moving."

“I think I have,” Andrew replied from where he sat upon the Mule waiting for it to move, “Thank you Deputy!”

With a tap Wyatt set Wolf into action and the mule sped deftly away from the awful scene towards the ship.

Bowman noticed how everyone seemed on edge after the incident.. he didn’t know the man that had been killed but he still felt outraged at the manner of his death.. shot in the back over box full of ballots. They would probably never know the whole story… and the more Andrew thought on it the less he was inclined to wonder.

Newhouse, Beylix, Inside the Rocinante, 1:05pm, Day Three

As the Mule pulled up to the Rocinante Andrew looked up at the ship and smiled slightly… he remembered such ships and remembered them fondly.. having travelled about a couple he was familiar with them and their abilities and was always amazed at the way they would keep flying even when they seemed ready to fly apart… he was looking forward to flying aboard this one for some reason.. it made a warm feeling grow in his chest.. he couldn’t explain it.. only that it made him feel good.

When they slid into the cargo bay, Wyatt was out of the mule before it had even settled and walking quickly back towards the door.

"Ma," he called into the comm as he reached it. "We got some guests t' get settled. Same number as we had on the trip in so there's no need t' figure on more for mealtime."

Andrew stepped from the mule and glanced around the cargo bay as he walked over slowly to stand next to Wyatt.
“Hope I haven’t caused you too much trouble Wyatt,” he said softly to the Captain, ‘twas not my intention to involve you in my affairs.”

“Cap’n, Mr. Bowman, we can’t let that sheriff blackmail us, we need to find some way to turn the tables or put somebody else in his place. And are we really gonna ferry Pearson back to Frisco, I can’t help but get the feeling there’s something not right about him and if he becomes Sheriff there I think that town, law wise, will become quite hostile to us. I still have friends there Cap‘n I‘d hate to drop this shiong-mung duh kwong-run on them, contract or not” Wolf spoke quietly as the others dispersed.

Andrew turned to look upon Wolf .. he quietly wondered why the man felt the need to include him in this conversation with the Captain… obviously he had no say in the matter as it was Wyatt’s ship and so he remained silent and let the Captain of the ship answer his crewman.

"We're gonna do jus' that, Wolf," Wyatt said in an even tone, his face unreadable. "We're gonna do the job, we're gonna get paid, and we're gonna put this whole bad deal behind us. Keep your head on straight, dohn-ma?"

“Unpleasant as the decision may make us all feel…” Andrew added, “.. Wyatt’s right.. best to get to where you need to drop this man off and be done with it.”

"Andrew," the captain gave Wolf a pat on the shoulder to soften his harsh words a little as he turned to the uncle of his dead wife. "We got a full house what with these travelers an' all, but you're welcome to bunk in Asher's bunk 'til we make Frisco. Then we can work out what needs workin' out."

“Don’t mind me Wyatt,” Andrew said with a smile as he hefted his belongings on his shoulder and headed off to explore the ship, “I can sleep anywhere… I just stay out of your folk’s way till me burn atmo and then we can discuss our situation.”

Wyatt did a little exploring of the ship.. heading up the catwalks and down the passages.. moving to the side out of the way of the crew as they prepared to get the ship ready to leave.

He wound up watching as Wyatt finished up talking to a woman he had not met.. obviously she had remained on the ship .. he didn’t catch what was said between Wyatt and her.. he only watched as Wyatt stormed off obviously upset about something.

(Figure this will take place when Wyatt gets his answer about Willow and storms off to find her)

Seeing the woman alone now .. Andrew steps into the room and clears his throat to announce his presence.. when the woman turns he sees her scarred visage and despite his shock shows no reaction on his face.. he has seen worse .. not usually on a woman though.. he nods his head slightly in greeting.

“Good day,” he says softly with a smile, “Sorry I hope I wasn’t interrupting anything.” He gestured with his head towards the retreating Wyatt’s figure. “Just looking for a place to stow my things; names Andrew Bowman, Ma’am.”

Subject: Can we get off this rock?.....

Newhouse, Beylix, Outside Jailhouse, 12:45 pm, Day Three

“Well now!” the sheriff drawled, “I’m hearing some threatening language to a law man here. That isn’t very civil considering I released your friend here as payment for his safe passage. Before you get any ideas in your little heads about revenge and retribution let me tell you, if I don’t get a wave from Luke every 24 hours telling me he’s being treated goodly, I’d have to assume the worst. Put out an arrest warrant to the cortex for y’all, and make sure I told all my friends in the verse that you people have a tendency to kill clients. Even if you avoid the law, how much work you gonna get with that reputation?”

“Wait just a minute!” John Blake glares at the sheriff, “Captain Wyatt is a good decent man, unlike you sir. He would never stoop to your level.”

“My level!” Sheriff growls indignant, “I do have two guns here. So you better watch your mouth.”

At this Andrew looked over at the Sheriff from where he was seated aboard the Mule waiting for the ride back to the ship.. he had thought the matter settled but the big mouth Sheriff kept spouting off showing that he shot his mouth off more than his guns. Andrew was becoming sorely tempted to test the Sheriff’s bravado.. his constant belief that he was the fastest gun here on this rock.

From what he had seen, the Sheriff always liked to come in guns ready in hand.. he wondered how the man would fair in a true duel when he didn’t get the jump on someone. He was contemplating stepping from the mule and putting an end to this whole thing right now. He was sure that is the lead started flying that Wyatt and his men would take care of Pearson if the man got involved, but it was the thought of Wyatt and his men that stayed Andrew in his seat aboard the mule. Wyatt had saved his skin from his stupid mistake of letting himself be taken into custody and trusting the ‘system’ with setting an innocent man free. He should have known by now the ‘system’ was broken.. not to trust it. He vowed that he would not find himself in a similar situation again any time soon.

Luke steps forward, “Whoa! Listen. I’m a lawman. I follow the law of the land. You have to talk tough when you are in my shoes but I am deeply sorry for the death of your friend. He was running, he didn’t stop and as you heard the sheriff, I did what he felt was right. Now if you have other ways and laws in Frisco, I’ll follow them to the letter I assure you. I wish that Mr. Sloat here had just stopped running when I told him to, especially for nothing but ballots.”

“He’s right” Sherman says to John, ‘Chad should have stopped. He’s been acting twitchy since we left. And we can plainly see that the sheriff here is heavy handed.”

“Excuse ME! Keep the commentary to yourself!”

“We came all this way for a Sheriff John,” Fiddler said, “and spent a lot of platinum. I think Chad did himself in by acting strange and running. Let’s go over the rules and laws with Mr. Pearson on the way back and make sure he knows what we expect.”

Mr. Blake is obviously not thrilled by his companions’ mercantile attitude but he does agree with them, “Right. Let’s take Chad home then. Mr. Pearson. First order of business, you don’t shoot anyone unless they are holding a gun or knife on you.”

“Yes Sir.” Pearson agrees, “Captain Wyatt, if you want me to hand over my irons now and you hold them for the length of the journey, I accept that your word is law on your ship.”

“I’ll appreciate that, Mr. Pearson,” Wyatt drawled. Then, turning his attention to the sheriff he added. “You’ll hear from Pearson every twenty-four, Lawman.”.

Andrew smiled slightly as he sat back .. he could tell that Wyatt was holding back what he really wanted to say.. he hadn’t seen the man in years.. but he thought he knew him enough to read some of what he felt... besides.. he felt the same way.

He held on as the Mule moved off towards the spaceport… and hopefully off this planet as soon as possible.

Newhouse, Beylix, Outside Jailhouse, 12:30 am, Day Three

"Let's git on back to the ship, Gentlemen.”

Andrew nodded slightly at what he saw as Wyatt’s wise decision… this wasn’t the place to start a fight.. Besides it wouldn’t bring back the poor soul with two bullets in his back. His hand moved away from where it hung next to his gun.. He had no doubt that he could have dropped the sheriff where he stood before the man could have gotten a shot off.. The man’s attention was too focused on those on the ground that he saw as a greater threat.. But he was glad that he didn’t have to kill the man.. It would have made the exit from this backwater world more urgent and a bit tougher.

Andrew Bowman eased back into his seat and reached to hold on for the ride back to the ship.. He didn’t know the rest of the crew yet.. Be he knew Wyatt enough to know that this wasn’t over yet.. He believed that he would find out what was going to come of all this once they were deep in the black.

He was ready to get off this rock.. Having been here only a short time.. It had worn out it’s welcome in a very short time.

Newhouse, Beylix, Outside Jailhouse, 12:20 am, Day Three

“Stop in the name of the law!” shouts Luke Pearson as he clears his pistol from the holster. Chad keeps on running.

BLAM, BLAM

Luke opens up on Chad, firing two shots into the man’s back. Both bullets hit their target with deadly accuracy and Chad goes down like a sack of potatoes. Luke then twirls the gun in his hand, all fancy like and re-holsters it. All around him, people stare in disbelief of what they just saw, but then they start to clap and smile cheerfully.

“Thank you Luke!”

“Nice shooting Mr. Pearson!”

“Good aim there Deputy Pearson.”

The praise and cheering goes on as the two men who had been chasing Chad caught up. But the smiles don’t hide the fear in these people’s eyes. The cheering can’t hide the terror you see in them.

Andrew Bowman had seen a lot of death so violence didn’t shock him.. but seeing this running man shot in the back without much chance given for him to surrender made him cringe slightly. What appalled him even more, was the callous comments from those on the street regarding it. He closed his eyes and shook his head slightly at the scene before him.

He heard the fear in the voices of the towns folk as they ‘congratulated’ the Deputy .. on what amounted to murder.. of the man whose only visible crime was running down the street.

“You ruttin’ trigger-happy sumbitch,” Sam’s gaze had already swept back past Sloat’s sprawled form and found the back of Pearson’s head again, “what’d ya have ta go an’ shoot that poor bastard fer?!”

Andrew heard one of Wyatt’s Crew, Sam.. he think he heard him called, comment on the needless death. He could only agree with the man’s words and opened his eyes again and focused them on Pearson as he stood up on the Mule as it came to a halt.

“Seemed downright uncalled for to me,” Andrew spoke up to add his words to those of Sam’s, “the man wasn’t a danger to anyone especially with his hands full of that there strongbox.”

He spoke loud enough so that all of the people ‘cheering’ for Pearson can easily hear what he thinks about the situation. He had stood so that he would stand out atop the Mule and call the attention to himself; easier to be heard that way.

“Hard to try a man when he’s dead… don’t you think!” He finished with a shake of his head again.

Newhouse, Beylix, Outside Jailhouse, 12:15 am, Day Three

Andrew watched as the events unfolded about him.. he raised an eyebrow when the shots rang out.. he remembered Darla from Emmitt's bar where he had played cards and unfortunately had to kill a man in self defense.. he still wondered why the man had tried to kill him?

Was he a wanted man here as well as on other worlds.. he had enemies.. hell who didn’t.. but most were poor and couldn’t afford to hire someone or place a bounty on his head.. at least not one that would make a person chase him down across the verse.

Though.. when he thought about it.. he could think of a few who could afford to hire bounty hunters or put up a sizable reward.. enough to make someone come into a saloon and try and shoot him in the back.. he would have to be more careful he thought.

For now he watched as a man carrying a strong box ran out of a building and was chased by two other men.. he thought this strange but strange seemed to be the way about this planet.

"Wolf," Wyatt drawled quietly. "Head that fool off at the pass. He ain't draggin' us to the gallows with him, an' he's got 'imself a might bit o' explaining to do t' me before the Law get's 'im."

That said, Wyatt shifted his brown coat to allow better access to his Colt. "Sam, we'll make 'im think we're helpin' him, so no guns unless necessary. Andrew...If'n you wanna step off, I understand."

Andrew smiled slightly and shook his head as he hung on to the mule so he wouldn’t get tossed.

“Nah.. I guess I might as well stick around.. ya might need me.” He checked the status of his holstered guns.. he didn’t draw any of them and wouldn’t unless necessary.. but it never hurt to know they were ready.

(Edit: had the wrong time/location bar.. hmm???)

If I may.. I would like to offer this poem in Memorandum of Joanne, Dragon Mistress, and how she will be missed, and the grief.. I'm sure.. we all feel:

Life goes on (by Tara)

The rain will fall the snow will sparkle,
the tree's will blow and the birds will sing, children will dance flowers will grow,
music will ring and tears will flow,
ice will melt and memories felt.
Yesterday i was there, today i am not.
The angels called upon me and led me far away.
Tears will fall, hearts will break.
but i am still there in your heart.
I can still be felt.
close your eyes can you see me standing there? remember life goes on.
one day we will meet but until then enjoy what you have got.
If you ever need me just close your eyes and i will be there,
open your eyes and i will be gone,
now live your life and move on.
Remember i am only sleeping.
i will never be too far.
i will be that star shining down on you,
can you see it?
tonight i say goodbye,
tonight i shed my last tear,
i have to leave the angels are near.
Fall with the rain,
sparkle with the snow,
blow with the tree's
and sing with the birds,
dance with the children
and ring with the music,
enjoy yourself and be happy,
smile and cry sing and dance,
laugh and be sad.
share moments and express feelings.
stengthen and weaken.
love and smile.
you are still young, your life is yours.
forever will i miss you.
but now I've been laid to rest.
the angel came i got my wings.
i can fly, and i can sore
i can reach where I've never been before.

close your eyes see I'm still standing there.
