Topic: Forgotten Realms: The Unsung Heroes
Subject: Rat-on-a-Stick anyone?

In the small underground chamber violet orbs met dark, beady eyes. The latter flashed with curiosity and hunger, but seemed so unthreatening that Aelistae’s mouth curled in mirth. ’Jora’ she thought, an image of the small, furry creatures that fed on the scraps of Skullport flashing in her mind. As a younger woman she had viewed them with disgust, even fear, so different were their emaciated, hairy bodies from the graceful spiders that lived among Lolth’s Drow. But then she realized how little harm they could do to her, and she begun to fancy that the creatures were more afraid of her than she was of them.

It turned out she was wrong.

An instant after the pairs of eyes had met, the chamber was awash with the filthy, chittering bodies of thousands – tens of thousands – of rats. The creatures were everywhere. They bit and scratched the uncovered flesh between where the skirts of her armour and the leather underneath ended on her thigh and her boots began. The rodents tried to burrow through her torso, held at bay only by the mithril strands of her armour. And they pulled and tore at the corneres of her eyes and mouth. It was all Aelistae could do to keep her feet and stop herself from huddling over into a blubbering, weeping mess.

Jallil, sslig'ne ilta,” she thought more than spoke, reaching through the mass of writhing bodies to where Linnix had been. A small, frightful whimper was the only sound that her friend – her sister – had heard her, and that the spell woven into the words had had its effect.

A few second later, Aelistae was gone.

Only to reappear a second later beside Dylan and Talus.

“I’ve decided I hate rats,” she murmured with cold humour, as she plucked a hissing rat from out of her long hair, threw it to the ground, and stamped on its brittle neck.

[OOC. The drow translates as: ‘Jora’ = Rats; ‘Jallil, sslig'ne ilta’ = Lady, protect her.

As for Aelistae’s actions she’s going to cast Sanctuary on Linnix, she’s then going to use her boots to teleport over to where Dylan and Talus are (ie. out of the swarms of rats).

She’ll then draw her sword and start swinging at rat flesh.]

Good question.

I think they're currently swarming over Aelistae and Linnix, and haven't headed up the passage that Dylan and Talus are in. But it'd be good to know for sure.

Well either's fine, I'd just need a little help if we go down the Saga route.

Of course we first need to rope in a DM...

Yes I'd love to play in a SW game. I don't have Saga edition, though, just 'Revised'.

I felt the same way when I heard about it. I'm not a big fan of the MMOs out there right now. But from the first glimpses and news of this one, it does seem worth trying.

Part of the reason is that Bioware have a long and proud history of making some brilliant rpg games. And if they can't make a MMORPG that has a strong story at its heart then no one can.

I was poking around the website that they have for the game (which is a surprise since there's no release date or any sign of the game being complete). There's quite a good comic to check out, and a some interesting videos from the developers.

This one in particular I thought was interesting.

I'm not a big fan of MMORPGs but a friend of mine mentioned that a new Star Wars MMO was being worked on. I scoffed at first, until he mentioned that it was a follow up to the excellent Knights of the Old Republic series, and that apparently they're trying to make the story central to the whole gaming experience.

That whetted my appetite, and so I was wondering if anyone in the know knew anything more about the game?

I spoke to Chris a few days ago, and he declared his intent to pull the plug on the game.

It's a shame since it's a game I have enjoyed, and I think others have too.

I think it is an attempt to try and force those who disliked 4th edition to convert to it. I, like others, actually did buy pdfs of a few 3rd edition related material, and I am disappointed that no one will be able to do so any longer.

If anything it's likely to drive people towards finding illegal means to download that material, rather than driving them towards 4th edition.

Subject: Taking the bait

Silvery hair flickered dimly in the gloom of the underground passage. Violet eyes widened slightly as they fell upon the empty room ahead. And a breath of air hissed from between ruby lips.

::No danger see I:: Aelistae communicated to Talus with silent, curving fingers and dancing thumbs. ::Trap? Ambush? Stay behind until clear or danger appears::

Like a small hunting cat on the prowl, Aelistae stepped carefully into the open chamber, her gloved hands so low they almost brushed the top of her dark boots. She raised one briefly to beckon Linnix on, before letting it fall again, and scampering quickly to the desk on the left corner the room.

OOC: There could be a trap or an ambush here, but Aelistae will take the bait. She’ll scamper quickly over to the desk. If nothing exciting happens she’ll search through it for anything of interest. After that’s done she’ll take a look at the piles of refuse. Although we probably know from our experience at the keep what goblin poo looks like.

Topic: Forgotten Realms Base of Operations
Subject: Quick explanation...

The new maps are up so here's a quick explanation of how I planned things. (if the consensus is to change things I'm happy to do that).

In the surface part of the Keep, area 1 is the garden/bailey. Area 2 is, on the ground floor, a reception/throne area for Bart, a study and a vault. On the upper floor it's Bart's personal chamber and 2 guest rooms/rooms for PCs. Area 3 contains 4 rooms for PCs and 2 bathrooms. Area 4 contains the kitchen and pantry and then a dining room with a storage area on the upper level. Areas 5 and 6 are barracks and one stronghold space is an armoury. Area 7 is a training area. Finally area 8 is servants' quarters with the upper floor being some rooms for a slightly better off employees.

There are stairs at the south west of area 1 that lead down to the basement.

In the basement, each circular room is divided into 2 with a bathroom or storage area to the rear. My thoughts are that the western portion can be bedrooms and the eastern areas can include a library, magic lab, a smithy and a workshop. Rooms 5 and 6 can be a prison and a storage area.

We won't have the funds to furnish each room into its specific role, but we should have plenty to to create the space for that room to be furnished. Until that time it could be used as impromptu sleeping quarters or something.

Umm, only because I drew up 15.

I suppose we could add more. Anyone can give me a poke after seeing the updated maps and I'll add/remove stuff as appropriate.

You were right about Stone Shape. We can get a 5% discount on constructing the walls in each underground space (so 95 gp rather than 100).

Subject: Lower levels

The lower levels are quite cheap to develop (100 gp per stronghold space, and there are 15 stronghold spaces there).

If we don't develop it at all we won't have enough space to give each PC their own room or enough space for a smithy.

Subject: Even more thoughts...

I've submitted some updated maps of the keep with interior walls in place, and individual rooms detailed (on both the ground and upper floors). Kaelyn hasn't put them up on this thread yet, but hopefully he will sense.

(The rest of this will make more sense if you have or can consult the Stronghold Builder's Guidebook and if you consult the new maps when they're up

All bedrooms, barracks, servant quarters, bathrooms, stables and storage areas have already been paid for or installed without us as a favour by the Crown, so we don't have to worry about that. That also covers most of the interior walls.

I suggest that we use up the 1000 gold reserve the keep has and the 5000k loan available immediately to kit out the keep with some essentials.

2 things we do have to pay for are the costs of working the cavern beneath the keep and of creating a wooden structure to act as servant quarters. That'll cost 2500 gp.

Which leave 3500 gp for outfitting the rest of the Keep and attracting some more soldiers to guard it. The way I'd suggest spending is on a courtyard (basically refitting the bailey), an armoury, a smithy and a basic training area for the training of troops. That'll cost 3000 gp.

Which leaves 500 gp which, according to Kaelyn, we could use to pay for 25 Tethyrian regulars to be stationed at the Keep. (level 4 warriors).

It'll give us a spartan existence and enough of a military presence to hold the keep should it be attacked. We'd have the space to furnish more rooms as and when the keep starts making money (things such as libraries, magical labs, workplaces, reception areas, studies, prison cells, etc. etc.)

Thoughts?

Sure if Talus wants to do the duties that would be great. He can use Aelistae's book, quill and ink if he doesn't have any of his own.

“A map of the mine would be useful, and it’ll let me put something we found a while ago to good use,” Aelistae responded with half a smile to Linnix’s suggestion, before reaching into her backpack and produced a dusty, leather-bound book marked ‘Adventure Log’.

She was still smoothing a crumpled page from the tome, when Linnix approached her and whispered quietly in Drow.

“Gaer zhah naubol ulu treemma dal l' olath, vel'drav dalninin z'hin ul'naus suul a suul,” Aelistae replied, laying a comforting hand upon the woman’s shoulder. “I can see well enough to guide you. And if you have to strike a torch don’t be shy in doing so.”

[OOC: “There is nothing to fear from the dark, when sisters walk together side by side.”

I think it would be best for Aelistae to take up any map-drawing duties simply because she can drop the book and draw her sword as a free action if needs be. If someone else wants to do it, though, then feel free to volunteer.]
