Topic: Forgotten Realms: The Unsung Heroes
Subject: Stepping towards the unknown

The keep glimmered like a candle in the distance. A halo of fiery light emanated from above it, and its masonry appeared to have crumbled off its walls like wax.

Aelistae slipped from atop Daisy’s back and stood on the edge of the large clearing that ringed the keep. Her gaze ran over the unmanned crenellations and the seemingly inattentive inhabitants. But as she stood there and cocked her head in thought, it was something else that occupied the drow priestess’ mind.

The keep should, she realized, have seemed unimpressive to her. Her violet eyes had glimpsed the terrible beauty of the Houses of Menzoberranzen. Every wall there was covered in a thousand intricate shapes and free-flowing forms designed to strike awe and fear in equal measure. Her gently tapered ears had been serenaded with the simpler beauty of the Promenade. The whole temple echoed with song so pure that the memory of it was enough to bring tears to her eyes. In comparison, the few squat structures of the keep should have seemed rude and uncultured.

‘And yet it has its own honest integrity to it,’ she concluded. ‘Much like the humans that built it.’

Aelistae shook her head, dispelling the enchantment the keep had cast upon her.

“I think we should strike the keep,” she commented matter-of-factly as she moved to tether her horse to a nearby tree. “It may seem foolish, but it is better to strike now before they have gathered their strength and posted a watch upon the walls.”

“Besides,” she added, with a gesture at the north-eastern portion of the keep, “we should be able to make it past the walls there without any need for rope and without alerting the goblins inside.”

You're absolutely right.

14 years ago now (I think) there was a school shooting in Dunblane in Scotland, and after really tight controls were imposed on all firearms, such a thing has never been repeated.

Sure knives are a lot more prevalent than they once were, but you can't kill multiple people with a knife.

At least there's enough orcs for everybody.

Time to show everyone how good Dylan is with that rapier of his.

That's exactly how I would expect it to work. But it would be good to know if there's an official ruling anyone has come across on this.

Does anyone know if the feat 'Skill Focus' would apply to all forms of the 'perform' or skill, or just to a particular sub-skill?

I'm sure this query is answered in one of the faqs but since the dastardly advent of 4th ed. it's hard to find them.

I was just wondering if it would be possible to introduce a search function on the site?

Sometimes when I've wanted to find something in a really big thread, I've ended up using google which is a roundabout way of doing things.

Splitting up would be a bad idea.

I agree with Jozan's plan though. If we are going to continue circling north of the camp to investigate the first horn, it makes sense to finish off what gobbos are still at the camp we'll pass.

Heh, yeah I know what you mean.

As far as I know it goes back to the Second World War, when the RAF was a new service and so was willing to experiment a little more. It might also have been a way to distinguish it from other infantry units, and to stop it being co-opted into the Marines or Paras etc.

It's because it falls under the (loose) command of the Royal Air Force. There's a Special Boat Service as well that's part of the Royal Navy etc.

Aelistae could teach him drow silent if he asked nicely. It's a sign language, which I've been dying to teach some other people, if only because i like the idea of carrying on two conversations simultaneously - one verbally, and the other with her fingers.

I think we can combine both plans maybe? If we head towards the source of the first horn, we can knock off any goblins we meet along the way.

So how are things looking for the Sinda and the Free Peoples?

Pros for the Free as a whole

1) Economically the Free Peoples are winning the war quite easily. We managed to collapse the market prices several turns ago. What this means is that the forces of Sauron get the lowest possible renumeration from selling products to market. Since Mordor isn't that great a place to live, and the Dark Servants need to sell to balance the books, this form of economic warfare can be quite effective.

2) Militarily we're winning hands down. Since I last posted the Ice King has lost his capital Durthang and his back up capital (both in Mordor). The Dragon Lord's back up capital has also been destroyed (also in Mordor). Finally Osgiliath has been liberated and Ithilien is now (more or less) free of Sauron's malefic influence.

3) Character strength. Some Free characters are looking very strong. There are already assassination squads up and running of Free agents, and soon they'll be joined by curse squads. (Curse squads are groups of very powerful mages that can kill enemy characters without being in the same hex as that character).

The Corsairs did manage to destroy a North Gondor city (Pelargir) and a South Gondor town, but in so doing they lost all of their navy (one third of which is now in my hands!).

Negatives for the Free

1) The DS do still have agents around that can pose real problems for the Free. We do have agents of our own (the Sinda especially) but they're out-numbered by the opposition. So some nations have lost a lot of characters to Morgul blades (North Gondor especially).

2) The bank of Harad/Corsairs. Since both Harad and Corsairs turned Dark, they can payroll Mordor nations that would otherwise go bankrupt. The Free will need to do something about this.

Now for the Sinda. How am I doing?

In short, the Sinda Elves are starting to become very strong indeed. I'm regularly ranked first or second among the free peoples, but that's not necessarily the best way of judging things (since it's a team game really).

I managed to get down 13 camps before the camp limit was reached (at which point it becomes tough to create new camps) and many of these have been upgraded to villages. As a result the Sinda have the highest (equal) tax base among the Free Peoples and have given large amounts of cash in recent turns to more economically deprived nations.

In terms of resource production, that has also been improved hugely. The only thing I'm a little short on is mounts for cavalry, but I have an artifact that will allow a mage of mine to conjure mounts of thin air every turn.

My characters are exceptionally strong. I don't want to name names, in case any DS player reads this, but of the 17 Sinda characters around at the moment 8 have a rank of 60 or more in one of the four skills (command, agent, mage or emissary). Another 5 are approaching that mark.

Militarily I have the largest navy in the Great Sea bar none (primarily due to captured Corsair ships). I'm also scaling up my land forces for various up-coming escapades (more on that in a few weeks time).

Subject: 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend' (she hopes)...

Aelistae stared wide-eyed at the night sky. The moon and stars had been eclipsed by a face formed from a thousand bursts of fiery light. It leered over the keep and surrounding countryside, its visage a cross between that of an orc and an ogre. And then it spoke.

“Return to the Keep my Minions. Return to regroup, where we will then march out in force, and stomp these urchins which dare defy the will of Bolikar, the will of Gruumsh! The time for humans is nearing an end, and their hit and run tactics shall fall under the mighty foot of the united might of the six-clans! Return to the Keep, from where we shall surge forth like a wave and sweep aside those in the north, south, east and west for the insignificant insects they are. Bolikar see’s all, as Gruumsh wishes it. Bolikar crushes all who stand before him!”

The drow priestess shook her head in disbelief, causing several strands of her silvery hair to fall across her face. She had never seen such magic or levels of organization displayed by orcs and goblins. She had always thought them too brutish, too beset by internecine strife to ever realize their collective strength.

‘Whataver this Bolikar is, he’s no ordinary orc. …Or perhaps there’s another power behind the throne and....’

The sudden appearance of Intella interrupted her train of thought. The diminutive halfling stumbled back to the narrow trail, blood streaming from a wound in her head and with her flesh torn horribly on one of her arms. Aelistae quickly swept her hair from out of her eyes and sheathed her sword before moving to her companion’s aid.

[Aelistae will cast cure light wounds on Intella, and will boost it with one charge from her healing belt, for a total of 3d8+3 healing. She’ll swap out ‘true strike’ for the clw. If there’s any healing still to be done after that, she’ll top it off with her wand of clw.]

“Don’t be afraid to come to me if you’re hurt like that again. I don’t know what you’re reasons are for being here, but you’re one of us now,” she whispered to the halfling.

“We should move away from here, and find out what is was that caused that first horn to be sounded,” she added to the others after rising to her feet. “If there is an enemy of the goblins and orcs there – even if it’s one of our rivals – we need to make common cause. I don’t think we can fight this Bolikar and his army alone.”

Subject: Food for the table or another goblin massacre?

Aelistae’s eyes narrowed. All around her tiny flickers of light bobbed through the undergrowth, and, when the lights went out, she could see the goblins that were holding them. They were crouched low, rubbing their already filthy bodies upon the earth, and their eyes glimmered with a terrible hunger. Every now and again the yapping of a dog-headed gnoll could be heard, presumably urging its charges forward and reminding them of the fresh meat that they would soon enjoy.

Aelistae, however, was in no mood to fill a goblin stew-pot.

She carefully worked her way from atop Daisy’s back and landed quietly upon the hard-compacted earth of the trail they had been following. The horse seemed strangely calm, as if trusting her new dark-skinned mistress would keep her safe. But Aelistae’s companions seemed more ill at ease. She knew that the darkness of the night was enough to blind the humans that travelled with her.

“Keep calm,” she whispered, “there are seven creatures on this side and a similar number behind. Most are goblins, but some are…” Aelistae paused as she tried and failed to think of the human term for the gnolls that she had seen. “The others are kyrii – dog-headed creatures.”

She reached for the comforting pommel of her sword and briefly closed her eyes. A short while later her sword was in her hand and four silvery balls of light hovered in the air, illuminating the surrounding area.

[OOC: Aelistae will dismount as a move action, draw her sword as a free action, and user her innate drow ability to cast dancing lights. Two balls of light will be on the ‘northern’ side of the trail, and two on the ‘southern’. Since they give off as much light as a lantern, it should be enough for the non-darkvision types to see with.

On the second and subsequent rounds Aelistae will be engaging the enemy. She’ll try and stay close to the trail and protect Bart and other non-melee types.]

I doubt Intella can dismount, move and attack all in the same round. Dismounting from a mount is a move action unless you can make a DC 20 ride check (which will be pretty tough)

I still prefer leaving the horses behind, but if the rest of you want to take them Aelistae is willing to go along with the plan.

And don't worry Dwibius! We all goof from time to time.
