Topic: Forgotten Realms: The Unsung Heroes
Subject: Providing some comfort

“I have done worse,” Aelistae uttered simply, after Linnix confessed that she had been a thief in the past. The drow woman moved over to Linnix and laid a hand reassuringly upon her shoulder. “It does not matter who or what you were, but what you are now, and that you become the change you wish to see in the world.”

“I am Drow. I have done and seen such things…but it does not matter. The Lady forgives me and loves me in spite of all that. She loves you too, Sister.”

Aelistae smiled at Linnix, and lent in close to kiss her softly on the cheek.

“I’m sure the spell will work,” she directed towards Dylan. “If it doesn’t then we’re all going to get a little wet. Either way, I’m glad that you’ve decided to join us Dylan.”

The combats have been tough (especially the one with the werewolves!), but I don't agree that the challenges have been more than we could handle.

It seems to me that that's what you're complaining about. But you're characters never questioned following the wishes of a disembodied voice in a defiled temple, and then chose to attack an immortal dragon demon thing when you were in a weakened state. Both Silvara and Zora were the authors of their own fate rather than the passive recipients of some capricious DM-ing.

The mortality rate has been high, but to be honest these last couple of deaths
could have been avoided. And of course Sheva died because her player disappared.

As for non-bard singers, all priestesses of Eilistraee can sing a little. Although she only has one cross class skill point in the ability.

Oh and welcome back!

Yep, I know. It is a good idea.

We have a potion of darkvision for whoever wants the job. Now's the time when that potion becomes invaluable for you filthy surface dwellers...sorry, had a Lolth moment there.

Xaris will be -1 to Hide because of the Chain Shirt (it's only of masterwork quality, not mithril). So that'll be +11 not +12.

I fancy that Linnix would be the best at scouting, but it's up to Reralae if she wants to say that in character.

I think it might have been a mistake following a disembodied voice in a defiled temple, and an even bigger one attacking Malice.

Things aren't looking good for Zora and Silvara.

Subject: Preparing for battle

The small cloth glided over the length of her blade, and left its steel shimmering excitedly in the dark. It seemed almost alive in Aelistae’s hands, feeding on the nervous energy that churned inside her while she waited for night to fall.

And then finally it did. And Aelistae sang.

There were no words to the song. No particular pattern to the music. But Aelistae’s soft, soprano voice had a quiet beauty to it nonetheless. Her song was a confession to Goddess of the self-doubt and fear she had felt in recent days. And it was a plea to Eilistraee to watch over her friends and give her the strength to protect them.

There was no answer, or at least none that anyone could hear. As the wordless hymn tapered to a close, however, Aelistae could feel that her Lady was with her. Her skin tingled from Goddes’ presence, as if it had been caressed with the touch of her lips, and deep within she could feel her fears replaced with a new found strength and resolve.

“I’m ready,” she said simply to her companions. The drow woman rose to her feet, checked her belongings, fastened them in place, and then finally sheathed her well-maintained sword.

“We should move swiftly and silently. We should leave our horses here, and maybe some water for them to drink. Stay close together, but do not speak over a whisper when we near our goal. By Song and Sword, I hope…I know that we shall succeed. We have come too far to fail now.”

[OOC: Aelistae would prefer to leave the horses here, but if anyone else has a plan feel free to chime in. When we get to the ruins of the bridge, Aelistae will cast Make Whole.]

Subject: Quick explanation

The spell Aelistae is thinking of is 'Make Whole'. It should be able to repair the bridge, and for us all to therefore ride over it.

If we are going to wait until nightfall, Aelistae will have a look at the corpses on the battlefield and see if there's anything to salvage from them.

“Tahlin Orbb,”* Aelistae mouthed, after Linnix had shared her thoughts. “It may be that some will wait for the goblins to be killed, for us all to be weakened and then strike. We should be careful how we proceed.”

“I think it would be better for us to move under the cover of night and find a place where we can leave our horses,” she added after a momentary pause. “If we move quietly we should be able to ensure we do not stumble into a trap. Or at least that’s what I would do if I was in the World Below or in a forest. I…I have never done this in the open.”

Aelistae’s eyes fell to her other companions who hadn’t yet spoken. “What are your thoughts on the matter?”

Daisy pawed the earth nervously as Aelistae worked her way loose from her saddle. She fell to her knees and her blue-black fingers trailed across the blacker earth and the footprints upon it that so alarmed the horse she had been riding.

“Shi tar,” she whispered to the horse, in the language of the surface elves, “byrol caesi shor ces iar.”

She rose to her feet and let the earth fall from her fingers. It was clear to her that a battle had been fought here. The dead goblin corpses and the fallen armoured figure attested to that. But the burns upon the corpses and the ruined cinders of the bridge suggested something more than just a simple clash of swords had occurred.

‘A wizard?’ she thought. ‘Or maybe more than one…’

“We’re too late,” Bart suddenly muttered, interrupting her train of thought. “Backtracking to another crossing would take days, and no horse can make the forty foot jump across.”

For the first time upon the road the indomitable farmer appeared deflated. He visibly sagged in the saddle, and appeared ready to turn his horse around and start the long journey back, until Aelistae’s hand found his and squeezed it reassuringly.

“There’s always hope. If we can wait until tonight, the Lady will grant me the strength to repair the bridge.”

[OOC: Aelistae’s whisper to the horse is elven, and translates as ‘Be calm, nothing here will hurt us.’]

Well given the amount of training he has to do, it's only natural he's going to have a high carb (and high everything else) diet.

I imagine if you asked one of the Olympic weightlifters what they eat in a day, it'd give you a heart-attack...well either that would or the amount of anabolic steroids they also consume.

Well he did suggest he was the greatest Olympian of all time, so I don't think he's that modest.

But I suppose he has a right to claim that title. Personally I'd still rate Carl Lewis higher, but that's because I think it's harder to win multiple events in track and field (and I enjoy watching athletics more than I do swimming ).

Subject: It's all so quiet...

Soft peels of laughter reverberated through the quiet spot in which they had made camp, and Aelistae was surprised to realize that she was its source. All the pain and loss she had experienced in the last few days had slowly worn away the simple joys in life, until even a smile had become a chore. But Linnix’s simple joke caused all that happiness that had welled inside to suddenly find a release.

“I’m glad to be here with each of you,” she managed to say after her fit of giggles died. “I never thought I would be led to such good people when I left the Promenade. But I was and I’m grateful.”

Aelistae rose, nodded her head to each of her companions, and strode away to be a lone for a time. And to give her thanks to her Goddess.

---

“There. I think that will suffice.”

Aelistae slowly unfurled the chain armour she had once worn, and had recently re-sized, before Xaris. The morning light illuminated the elegant, black metal links of the armour and the slightly less elegant job she had done in shortening its length.

“It may be a little tight in some places,” she added apologetically, “but then I don’t think Xyl’ssara ever thought a jlha’zen would be wearing the armour she made.”

[OOC: ‘Jlha’zen’ is Gnome in Drow]

It's a bit unfair to taint him with drug abuse. As a swimmer one has more options to win clutches of gold medals since the various disciplines aren't that far apart. Plus if we automatically doubt every amazing feat, it tends to cheapen everything of value.

But I do find it amusing that people are casting aspersions on the Chinese given that the big drug scandals of the past few years have all been around American athletes (Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery etc). That's not to say that all Chinese athletes are clean, but that no one country can claim the moral high-ground over the issue.

Now I'm getting impatient. I kind of feel like the viewer at the end of an episode of the '60s Batman series.

"What's going to happen next? Will Xaris realize that he'll need a little bit of padding around the chest area to feel comfortable in Aelistae's armour? Will Aelistae start dual-wielding scimitars and call herself Dzzrit? Will Talus ever admit his true feelings towards...Daisy the Horse? Stay tuned Batfans!"

...Hope the move goes well and you can finish the rest of the update soon Kaelyn!

My comment was a more general one rather than being solely directed at you. I've only read and skimmed through the Player's Handbook once, and so I'm happy to defer to your analysis over how a particular aspect of the game mechanics work.

Yet when you conclude by stating that Suicidolt ought to 'bow out and admit that everything I say is the complete truth', you don't necessarily come across in the best light.

Anyway, enough has been said on the topic, so let's just agree to disagree and leave it there.

Ah well that'll teach me for not looking at the MM. Looks like I was wrong about orcs then.

But seriously, there's no need to get quite so worked up over the issue. You're not going to convince each other than one perspective is 'the truth'.

And DM...I tend to agree.
