Well that was an interesting development. Silly slavers should no better than to try and domesticate a drow though.

On a more serious note, I hope Linnix will be able to pick up on the ruse, and the slavers will fall for it!

There are a number of lovely spells Aelistae can cast without any spell components if they do...and one that only requires a material component of three tears too.

A shrill scream rent the air that was already thick with smoke and the smell of charred flesh. But there was no answer. That lone voice was lost amidst thousands more raised in glee or filled with the furtive prayers of the dying.

She ran. Or at least she tried to run, but her legs buckled beneath her and she fell in an undignified heap upon the cool, obsidian floor.

“Mistress?” a smooth, oily voice inquired from somewhere behind her. Her head willed her neck to turn so she could see who it was, but it barely moved. All she could see was a dark shadow out of the corner of her eye – one that soon fell on top of her.

“Who…who are you?” she rasped, her tongue suddenly numb.

“Oh, Mistress, all these years in service and still you do not know me?” the shadow replied, breathing heavily upon the back of her neck. “Don’t worry, soon you will.”

She tried to scream again. But couldn’t.

She slipped into unconsciousness. And she was thankful.

Aelistae’s eyes flicked open. Her head pounded, and she shook it in an effort to dispel the pain and the nightmare that she had had. But neither would leave her. The pain focused into a sharp throb behind her eyes, and the memory or dream grew more real. Everywhere she turned she saw that shadow, smelt his breath, felt…

‘Calm yourself,’ a voice within her uttered. ‘Now’s not the time to dredge up memories of the past.’

She nodded weakly in answer, and rose to leave the nightmare behind. Unfortunately for Aelistae, she only found herself entering another.

Her drow eyes blurred into focus and spied the three walls and iron bars that made up her cell. Beyond those she saw and felt the hungry eyes of those that had captured her and others that obviously wished to purchase her for their amusement. Within the cage were the scattered forms of Linnix and the woman who had served them. Both were covered in thick, chalky make-up – a crude parody of their natural beauty. And Aelistae soon found that she was no better off in that regard.

“Are you hurt?” she urgently whispered to Linnix and Tessa as one of their captors moved to begin an auction – where they were the commodities on sale. “Listen we don’t have long. If they sell us and divide us, we’ll have no escape. We have to act now or not at all.”

“Linnix, do you still have that token on you? The one you won? If so use it when they open the door. They want to sell us. They will not want to see us harmed.”

“And Linnix,” she quickly added in another whisper, “Forgive me for what I’m about to do.”

Aelistae slapped Linnix across the face, so hard that her head almost ricocheted off the hard wooden floor.

“Foolish women! You led me here to be captured by these humans! I will kill you for your stupidity!” she shouted in a mock show of indignation, before leaping upon Linnix and clapping her hands around her throat. Yet, although her face was a mask of rage and anger, Aelistae’s hands were loose enough to allow Linnix to breathe easily, and to allow her to prepare to act if the slavers opened their cage.

I suppose they'd probably get promoted to desk jobs, if they're unfit/unwilling to carry out field work. That's what happens to a few of the characters in the Eisenhorn novels (which I just finished ).

And the others could get burnt as heretics...which you know is a kind of retirement.

The cup slowly rocked in Aelistae’s hand, and the tea within swirled hypnotically to its own rhythm. She tried to lift her eyes from it but she found she could not. The whole world was suddenly spinning and Aelistae was spinning with it.

“Elg’cahl…”* she muttered, feeling the same numbness creep over her as she had decades before in Menzoberranzen.

The cup crashed suddenly upon the wooden floor. And soon Aelistae joined it.

OOC: *“Poison…”

“Sisters,” Aelistae echoed simply, after Linnix had spoken.

“Some day, when all this is done, I will take you to the Promenade - the holiest shrine to Our Lady. There is a chamber there where just one song had been sung continuously for over a thousand years, to remember all those who have passed on in Her service. We will go there, lift our voices to join that song, and add Caera’s name to it.”

Aelistae smiled, but before she could add anything more, a knock at the door stole her attention.

“Misses,” a soft, voice spoke through the door, “I bring you a bottle of wine, some hot tea, and some fresh drop biscuits as a courtesy from a man downstairs. Before leaving, he wanted me to extend his sincerest gratitude for the show you put on, and can only hope you’ll be around again in the future to provide such a spectacle.”

“That’s…most kind,” Aelistae replied after she had walked over and opened the door. She absently dropped her hand to her waist, as the woman bustled past to lay down her tray, only to realize that she had no coin with which to express her thanks to the woman.

“I don’t have my purse with me, but, please, join us if you will,” she offered, before pouring some tea for herself and Linnix and nibbling on the edge of a biscuit.

Aelistae breathed deeply. She was tired and her muscles ached from her dance, but that was not the cause. Linnix had revealed why she had wanted to dance with her and who Caera was, and the truth of it stole her breath away.

“I…I’m going to tell you something,” she managed to utter as she moved to sit by her friend’s side and placed her sword beside her. She pulled her legs to her chest as she did so, in a mirror image of how she had sat when they had first met. Her eyes followed Linnix’s gaze until they fixed themselves upon the Moon.

“There was once a girl, long ago, who lost all of her family. But…it wasn’t the tragedy you might think it. In her heart she knew they had never loved her; that they were incapable of doing so even had they wished it. All the evils they had performed in their lived had emptied them out from the inside, and all they felt was hatred and burning ambition.”

“Still she was saddened by their loss,” she continued. “They were all she had known. And hearing and seeing their deaths nearly drove her into madness….”

For a moment tears glimmered in Aelistae’s eyes, but they screwed themselves shut as if deciding on their own volition that they would not let them fall.

“But…she did not. In her heart she heard a song. It had always been there, she had just never taken the time to listen to it. It whispered of the Moon, of the Dance, of how her people could return and live in peace with all those upon the surface.”

“That girl followed that song and became me. And I learnt that that song came from Eilistraee.”

“Caera – your sister – followed that song too. She might not have had a name for the Lady of the Moon that she danced for, but it was Eilistraee. And if she has passed on, do not feel sad. She dances still under the forests of Svartalfheim in a place so beautiful that no words can do it justice.”

Aelistae smiled, and the smile remained as her eyes opened once more.

“I do not fear death because I know what awaits me. If…if you wish it. It can await you too.”

Aelistae nodded her head slightly in response to Linnix’s words. She broke the embrace, but her fingers lingered upon her cheeks to lightly brush away the tears that fell there.

“Of course I will,” she remarked softly.

May we honour her always, Aelistae added as her dance drew slowly to its conclusion. She had wanted to ask Linnix who the woman had been in life, and what she had meant to her, but she could see that the wounds of grief were too raw and too recent.

Aelistae spun on the point of her foot, and assumed the posture she had begun the dance with. Her leg was lifted behind her, while her the sword she held was once more raised in salute to the heavens. Unlike before, however, she did not assume the position for long. Instead she broke it, by walking over to Linnix and embracing her.

“We will honour her, as we honour all those who were dear to us and have been taken away,” she whispered quietly.

No words were spoken from Aelistae as she continued her dance. Any onlookers who only took notice of the focused expression on her face or the thin beads of sweat that began to line her frame would only have seen a dancer devoted to her art. But each pirouette and leap she made had a wider purpose, and slowly, imperceptibly, its rhythm and form began to change to complement Linnix’s own.

Aelistae? Is this real? Linnix asked. The question was not expressed with words but with subtle changes in her dance, and was expressed in response to another figure joining their communion. To Aelistae’s drow eyes she seemed almost to be Linnix’s twin, except that her hair was longer and her eyes darker.

Yes, in a way, she replied enigmatically, communicating her thoughts even as she gracefully leant forward and extended her right leg straight out behind her at an angle beyond ninety degrees. The Dance shows that which you need to see, and that which your heart yearns for. So for this moment she is as alive as you or I.

Subject: The Dance begins

Loriel closed Aelistae’s hand around the gift she had placed there in order to encourage her to accept it, and despite her best intentions the drow woman found that she could not refuse.

“Well…I am grateful for the kind thought,” she commented with a nod of her head, as she unwrapped the gift. It was a brooch, almost as intricate as the one she currently wore but fashioned from materials of a far higher quality. Pale gems sat in gold inlay and were arranged to depict a full moon.

“It’s beautiful, Sister. Thank you,” the drow woman added, even as she wrapped the brooch up once more, and placed it safely upon the table. “I promise I’ll wear it later.”

Linnix looked in her direction, and softly worded her desire for Aelistae to fulfill her promise – to show her the Dance. Her eyes revealed her unease, as did, strangely, her dress, but Aelistae could not tell whether that was out of simple nervousness or something more.

‘Whatever it is, I hope you can provide some peace for her,’ she thought silently as she exended her hand out once more, and led Linnix into the middle of the courtyard.

Around them lovers lazily floated in their partners’ arms, others sang, and a few even traded suspicious glances at seeing the hue of Aelistae’s skin and the unsheathed sword that she carried. But Aelistae paid them no heed. She closed her eyes, and three small silvery balls of light appeared that floated ten feet in the air and covered the courtyard in a soft, silvery light.

“If you are unsure follow my lead,” she whispered to Linnix, “at least until you hear the Song within you, and grow unashamed to dance to that tune.”

The quiet whisper was followed by song. It was not loud nor boisterous, but soft and melodic like a quiet whisper of wind in the dead of night.

"A Valsharess tu’jol l’Phor Siyannen!
A ssussun ulu udossa gh’nindel
hí 'aladhremmin lorugen.
A Eilistraee Gilthoniel
ph’linath lu’killian i gelair..."

The words of the song faded, but the tune to which it had been set continued to be sung by Aelistae and her body responded to it. Like the song her body moved to slow, sensuous movements. Her bare feet curled as she stood upon her toes alone, and lifted her leg, bent at the knee, behind her. Her right hand, and the sword within it, reached towards the heavens and the globes of light she had conjured.

And then, as if a dam had burst within her, she broke out into a flurry of action. She spun upon her standing foot, threw her sword in the air and caught it effortlessly in her arm behind her back. On and on she danced, brief moments of activity punctuated by long moments where she held positions of unnatural grace and poise. The only constant was her long, silvery hair, which seemed in perpetual motion, and her eyes, which remained fixed on the night sky.

OOC: The globes of light is from her innate drow ability to cast dancing lights.

The words to the song are:

"O Queen beyond the Stars Above!
O light to us that wanders
here amidst the world of woven trees.
O Eilistraee Star-kindler
whose song and sword guide us…"

Subject: Gnome Gods

Regarding Gnomish Gods, I thought I'd just quickly post the bio of Baervan Wildwanderer. If you've played Baldur's Gate 2, he's the God that Aerie worships.

Baervan Wildwanderer is gentle, good natured and mischievious, and his penchant for good-natured mischief rivals Garl Glittergold himself. Though sometimes Baervan plays jokes on other creatures, it is hard not to like him. The Masked Leaf's tricks are much more pointed than [is] typical of the Forgotten Folk [ie. gnomes], and if Baervan wants to send someone a message, he does so in the form of a joke. Baervan is patron of the forest gnomes, rare and secretive kin of rock gnomes.

He also has a raccoon companion called Chiktikka Fastpaws. The rest is about how his clergy is organized and we can skip that...

As for his dogma:

The great forests of the outdoors await those Forgotten Folk daring enough to venture forth from their burrows. Wander the great woodlands in search of excitement and sylvan sites of incredible beauty. Defend and protect the creatures of the forest and the woodlands in which they reside. Be ever curious, and follow life wherever it may lead.'

...I thought I'd bring it up since that reminds me of Xaris.

Subject: A crowded table in the inn

The evening wound on and Aelistae sat alone, lost in her thoughts.

A quiet cough alerted her to another’s presence, and her eyes widened slightly in surprise as she found it was Xaris. The garb the gnome was dressed in was poor, marked as it was by the days they had spent together on the road, but the smile he wore was genuine as he politely asked if he could join her.

“Please,” she responded with a gesture at an empty chair, “I am always glad for the company, and I’m honoured that you would consider me a friend Xaris. You more than anyone have reason to mistrust me, after what my kind have done to yours.”

Aelistae continued with a soft laugh as Xaris commented her on her dress and her beauty. “Thank you. If I had known you were possessed with such a silver tongue I would have sought your counsel earlier.”

Linnix chose that moment to swim into view, and stole Aelistae’s attention from anything else she may have added.

‘If her skin were darker I would swear she was an Elistraeyn,’ Aelistae mused as she nodded appreciatively at the dramatic change in her appearance.

“Umm, Aelistae, do you think I need a blade?” she queried nervously.

Aelistae smiled and shook her head. “To dance with a blade would be to pledge yourself in service to Eilistraee. And with all the will in the world I don’t believe you’re ready for that.”

“L'Alure, L'Drathir, L'Killian – The Dance, The Moon, The Sword. That is what She asks of us,” she added, as she lightly touched a brooch she wore depicting a naked drow woman dancing before a full moon with nothing but a blade for company. “All else is discarded – our doubts, our fears, everything. But any can join the Dance if they feel is call without the need to offer anything more.”

She rose suddenly, her sword perilously balanced in the fingers of her right hand as she extended the other to Linnix. “Would you like to begin?”

Before the young woman could reply, Loriel appeared and dispensed gifts to all those gathered around the small table.

Aelistae broke her hold upon Linnix’s hand in order to take the small package, but the shake of her head displayed her unease. “I can’t take this Loriel. I have nothing to give you in return. And I need nothing other than your friendship.”

Umm, I may be missing something, but I don't think the Pope has made an official announcement proscribing DnD as heretical. (although if he did, the sales of the PHB would probably rise. )

As far as I'm aware, any anti-roleplaying stuff has come from some slightly odd Evangelicals.
