Topic: Game of Thrones Subject: Well...
Maybe I sounded more negative than I meant to. The translation from book to screen is still fabulous. It's just that there are off-screen omissions and small conflations of several characters into one that are noticeable.
The fact that George R.R. Martin is the guiding hand in the production ensures that it's true in spirit to the novels.
Oh, and if you won't be disappointed with what's coming I assure you...

Topic: Game of Thrones Subject: Yep
Been watching it, and reading the novels (the first series inspired me to start reading them, and I'm on the 5th now).
There's a lot of cutting corners in the TV version as compared to the novels, but it is still very, very cool. I can't think of any other TV show that has conveyed a dark, earthy fantasy so well.
I suppose, though, the downside to reading the novels is that it spoils the surprises in the TV version. Was it the weird thing with Davos and Melisandre that had you spooked?

I don't have the time to play another game, but there is a version of the Drow race that doesn't involve a level adjustment. It's in the FR Player's Guide to Faerun (3.5 version).
Thought I'd be helpful and point that out.

Topic: Gender Roles (an unorganized possible feminist rant) Subject: ...
There is no gendered bias in D&D over any of the prime attributes or any classes.
In real life we can, of course, say that the average man is stronger than the average woman. But, adventurers are (by definition) not the average. You only need to check out some of the Olympic events to see some uber-strong women that would easily have a strength of 18 (or more).
EDIT: That's applying to Humans of course. I imagine the typical Dwarven women are as muscly as their male counterparts (it's the beards...)...

I have played strong female, fightery types (a couple made brief stints in Olan's games, I recall). I have also played some very cool female clerics too (and I always enjoy playing clerics). So I'm not sure how true it is in my case.
I'm much like Eol, though, in that I no longer really want to play fighters of any sort. Or at least not straight fighters at any rate.
So maybe it's something to do with women not wanting to play the meathead of the party (whether male or female)?

Ok, it's pretty cool.
I don't, however, want work colleagues who are 'friends' of mine on Facebook to know that I'm a roleplayer (I'm afraid it'll be seen as a bit unprofessional). So I may create another account for rdinn.

The key thing is to make monsters fit into the narrative and story you're telling. Also try and make the scenario you run flexible enough that you give players more than one route that they can take to get to the end. That'll encourage you to work on the bits beyond combat
