As for what to do with the shield, since DA wants it for Artanis, I say we let her have it. Sure it'll be a while before she's able to pay off the 9k, but since there will be items that we'll find in the future that people will be bidding on, it won't take that long (I think).

I'm all for selling the spear though, if Xaris doesn't want it.

The idea that Loriel 'recovered the shield on her own' is ridiculous. We were all traveling down the corridor when we collectively came across the room and saw the items. Then you posted as Loriel that you would take the items before anyone else managed to get a post in.

That in no way constitutes recovering an item on your own.

And to be honest, even if Loriel had done so, why would she need the shield at all?

Personally I'd like for us to be able to divide loot without recourse to an auction system. But if people who can't use items start claiming them, then keeping things as they are is better for all.

Are you sure? No one is asking that you pay off the whole amount immediately, or that all the gold you earn in future must go into paying this debt.

Well I suppose the question is whether Xaris wants to hand over those items as party loot or keep them himself. If it's the former than the cost to identify it all can come from party funds. Otherwise probably not.

Did you think about the spear at all for Xaris? It is a pretty nifty weapon for barbarians.

Aelistae won't be bidding on any of the items. The shield and spear aren't useful to her and she just got the ring of course.

If no one wants them I suppose we could sell them, but I'd rather they be used since they are funky items.

Other than that we do have lots of mundane items that we've gathered as loot that I'd suppose we should sell as well.

Subject: A frosty reception

Aelistae instinctively raised the cowl of her cloak and immersed her face in its depths. Only a few strands of her silvery hair were uncovered, but she could still feel the gazes of disapproval that were directed towards her in the inn. A hush had fallen over the patrons in the bar when she had entered, and when the conversation resumed it revolved around the ‘drow witch’ seated in the corner. One of the armoured humans even appeared as if we would rise and confront her openly until another calmed him.

It was a scene that had become remarkably familiar to Aelistae. Ever since leaving the Promenade beneath Waterdeep, her attempts to prove that she was no danger to simple village and townsfolk had gone poorly, and, even after she had found some common ground by signing up to Bart’s expedition, she had nearly met her end in the streets of Darromar.

“I’d like to buy the others a drink,” she whispered quietly to one of the serving girls with a gesture to the surly patrons, “I truly mean them no harm. And if you could pass on that I would be grateful, Sister.”

[Aelistae will hand over 5 silvers to her if she agrees.]

Aelistae sipped the water slowly, and gave a cursory glance to the menu that had been provided to her. The food seemed strange and exotic to her eyes. Without knowing what was good to at and what wasn’t, Aelistae quickly decided to order the first item that Linnix chose.

She smiled apologetically at the woman as she rose to investigate the small, wheeled cage that sat in one corner of the inn.

“Could I have a go?” she asked the innkeeper, as she produced a handful of gold and silver coins.

[Aelistae will try her luck 3 times if she’s allowed to.]

Well I hope to have my character finished(ish) shortly. I'll pm it to you soon with a background of her and her appearance of her (etc.).

I still need to spend my money on equipment, but I imagine that's not too difficult.

I think I'll probably buy the 4th ed. PHB and take a look at the core rules. There may be something in there that's worthwhile.

What I object to is everything apart from the core game mechanics at the moment.

Ah well Aelistae doesn't have enough to buy out the ring of protection (since half it's value will be 1000gp). So...can I bid 400gp for it? (I could probably bid less for it and still get it, but it's only fair to bid what I can.)

And personally I don't think we should bid for scrolls/potions and such-like.

Linnix suddenly seemed so imbued with verve and energy that Aelistae had to stifle a giggle. They joy she expressed so openly was a breath of fresh air for the Elistraeyn, especially after the confrontation that occurred moments before.

But as Linnix skipped off to catch breakfast, Aelistae realized that she had never mentioned to the young woman precisely what she had intended to show her, but somehow Linnix had known it involved dancing.

‘Was she…?’ The thought that Linnix had been watching her as she had danced the night before and had then met Nash, caused her eyes to widen slightly.

‘But even if she was watching last night…do I have anything to be ashamed of?’

The drow priestess reached into a pouch that hung on her belt, and fingered the silver cross that was contained therein. She raised it to her lips, and found her answer.

I've enjoyed playing all classes really.

I don't like monks though. Since most campaigns conform to a fantasy version of mediaeval Europe I've always found the presence of Shao Lin kung-fu masters bizarre.

Oh I'm happy for you to take the cloak if you like. Aelistae's saves are all fairly high so she can go along happily without it.

As for money, Aelistae would be happy to share whatever she has with Artanis.

As it is we should be swinging by Castle Tethyr, so we should (hopefully) be able to buy basic supplies and gear for Artanis. If the party wish to spare the cash we could also invest in some better armour for her too (I was thinking a masterwork breastplate if we could find one).

Aelistae caught the faraway, haunted look in the young woman’s eyes. It was a look she understood, because it was the same one that afflicted her when she thought overlong on her past.

The drow woman reached out and reassuringly squeezed Linnix’s hand. “It is called l’assajre among my kind. To see and feel moments of our past so vividly that we believe we are there. To feel guilt…and shame at what we have done. Or feel such peace that we wish we could live in that moment for eternity.”

“I have done and seen things that I am not proud of. Things that cast shadows on my mind and my soul. Such cruelty…” Aelistae shook her head and interrupted her train of thought. “The thing is that we can’t let the past consume us. If we did we would become those shadows.”

“I don’t know who she was Linnix, and I would not force you to reveal something that is private. But, if you like, I can show you something to ease the pain of the dream and the pain of its loss.”

Oh we have some remaining potions that I figure we can give out without any bidding or anything.

I would suggest the Darkvision go to Linnix (since she doesn't have dark or low light vision at all), and that the haste and blur potions go to Artanis and Xaris. If I could take the neutralize poision potion for Aelistae that would be nifty, since it will lesson the need for her to memorize that spell.

Other than that, is no one else bidding on any of the magical items?

Yay! It looks as if Aelistae won't have to use up all her spells. *dances*

Can she make a heal check to deduce how much healing Bart or Marcus would require? She has no intention to heal the captive bandit, and Kas of course will be able to heal herself.

“Are you a fairy?”

What had been a softly worded thought echoed around the lightless room and travelled further than she intended. She hastily drew a small hand over her lips, as if that act alone would cause the words to tumble back into her mouth.

A slow gurgling sound from what seemed like a pile of refuse that occupied one corner of the cell was the only response. It took her a while to realize that the gurgle was a laugh and the pile of refuse the broken body of a person.

“Is that what they say?” a woman’s voice responded throatily when the laughing died. “That I am a fairy witch, come to spirit drow children away so I can sacrifice them to my Goddess?”

She nodded dumbly, too afraid to speak or move closer and see what the horrible monster she had long been told of actually looked like.

“No child…I am not a witch. I serve no Goddess. I am just a broken elf waiting for a death that never comes.”

A sad smile came over the poor wretch, but it was one she could sense rather than see. “One day you, or your children, or your children’s children, will look upon one of my kind and realize that both elf and the drow are the same. You will take their hand in friendship, embrace them, and come to know that in the future we will be one people.”

Lidless, empty eye sockets emerged from the dark. They sat in a face that must have once been beautiful, but starvation and torment had stolen that away.

Her eyes widened in terror as she peered into those empty depths. She ran away in terror, but the voice still chased her.

“Remember that child! Remember!”

She did.

Loriel’s hand hovered in the air, after the elvish woman had declared her wish to be friends. Aelistae not only took the hand offered to her, but embraced Loriel warmly.

“Amin harmuva onalle mellon e' cormamin, Loriel.”

Loriel continued by mentioning Aelistae’s attire the previous night, and cause a light violet blush to stain her otherwise blue-black features.

“It was…” she stammered, breaking her embrace to look Loriel in the eye. “Look, I would never do anything to endanger the task we have signed up to. Trust me on that.”

[Reply if you wish Bri, I’m happy to keep backposting]

---

Aelistae felt like shaking Kas out of the fantasy she had constructed. The one in which she had the right to judge others for their failings but yet ignored her own. And in which Kas had entered the underground complex with Aelistae’s consent, when she had not even been present when they had decided to do so.

Between what first Loriel and Linnix said to her, however, there was little room or need for her to say anything more.

“I thought the angel feathers was a nice touch,” Aelistae joked as she knelt near where Linnix had taken her perch. The woman was pale and drawn, and even though the drow priestess knew little about humans she knew there was something wrong.

“I never told you how sorry I was for last night. You asked me out of friendship what was troubling me, and I…well I didn’t respond. But if there’s anything you need to say, perhaps we can burden each other with out troubles?”

OOC: Yay! I get to use Elven rather than Drow!

The Elven is: “I will treasure your gift of friendship in my heart, Loriel.”

Other than that I've successfully managed to locate Tinculin, for the Free Peoples to use. It's a powerful mage artifact in its own right, but it also gives mages the ability to learn a spell that can allow them to damage enemy characters without being present on the hex in which they're situated.

And I've been focusing all my efforts on unveiling and smashing a hidden town that the Dragon Lord has in the middle of Mirkwood. That'll fall to me this turn, and will mean that Mirkwood will have been cleansed by the end of turn 6!

It also puts me in a good position. The Sinda will have successfully overcome the danger posed to Lorien, and my only loss has been one village. All my characters are intact, and are now looking very strong. Added to that I have 4 emissaries who are going to be busy building camps and villages in order to improve my economy.

So what has happened?

Since I wrote that thing about Taurnil I might as well start there. On turn 3 Taurnil intercepted an army hailing from Dol Guldur that was looking to raze Caras Galadhon. The Dragon Lord actually sent another army around as well, in, what I suspect, was a plan to converge on Lorien. Luckily the Eothraim and North Gondor cavalry intercepted and destroyed that second army.

On turn 3 I decided not to have Taurnil's army attack but to prevent the opposing army from moving back to Dol Guldur. In the end the Dragon Lord decided to assault the Woodmen Camp I was on, in the mistaken belief that he would attack me as well. On turn 4 I attacked and won! Yay!

Battle at 2615
In the Mild climate of the Open Plains of 2615, a conflict took place in the hours of late morning under a clear sky.

At the head of a highly energetic army rode Captain Taurnil of the nation of the Sinda Elves. The mount on which he rode cantered anxiously along the side of the battle lines. Behind him the forming ranks were filled with:
Troops Weapons Armor Formations

1000 Wood Elf footsoldiers w/broadswords wooden none a mob
900 Wood Elf archers w/long bows arrows none ragged ranks

At the head of a rebellious army rode Hero Celedhring of the nation of the Dragon Lord. In his hands was borne the glowing Staff called Taurin. The mount on which he rode moved with trepidation to the center of
the battle lines. Behind him the forming ranks were filled with:
Troops Weapons Armor Formations

400 Troll footsoldiers w/battle axes wooden none a mob
600 Orc footsoldiers w/scimitars bronze leather a mob
600 Goblin archers w/short bows arrows none a mob

The Camp of Vidus flying the flag of the Woodmen is situated in the Open Plains here.

After the battle.... Taurnil's forces found no enemy armies to fight. Celedhring's forces found no enemy armies to fight.

The battle for Vidus was over even before it began. The attackers were so numerous and strong that thedefending militia had little chance to save themselves. The battle was over in just a few hours!!

After the attack on the population center.... Celedhring's army survived the attack on the Camp, but suffered minor losses. Celedhring appeared to have survived. The Camp has been reduced to a Ruins. The Ruins of Vidus now flies no flag.

The Dragon Lord tried to assassinate Taurnil after that, but not only did it not work, Taurnil severely wounded the prospective assassin. I have no idea why the Dragon Lord tried that, since he (at that stage) would have no agents capable of carrying out assassination orders. (it requires quite a high agent rank).

On turn 4:

In the Mild climate of the Open Plains of 2615, a conflict took place in the early morning hours under an
overcast sky.

At the head of a calm army rode Hero Celedhring of the nation of the Dragon Lord. In his hands was borne the glowing Staff called Taurin. The mount on which he rode moved calmly to the front of the battle lines. Behind him the forming ranks were filled with:
Troops Weapons Armor Formations

388 Troll footsoldiers w/battle axes wooden none a mob
582 Orc footsoldiers w/scimitars bronze leather a mob
582 Goblin archers w/short bows arrows none a mob

The Ruins of Vidus flying no flag is situated in the Open Plains here.

Report from Taurnil.....My commanders moved among the troops before battle, readying them, bolstering their resolve, and issuing last minute orders. These troops didn't need much encouragement and waved and joked
with their Commanders, offering bets on who would find the best plunder. Finally the order was shouted across the battlefield.. Head straight for them and then strike the left flank...the left flank!

Against the forces of Celedhring, when we hit their flank, they attempted to surround us.

After the battle had joined in earnest, heroes made their presence known all over the battlefield. Celedhring rode into the enemy ranks with his glowing Staff and cut down a score of foes before they knew what had happened.
Report from Taurnil.....Our archers let loose an initial volley that soared unhindered into the enemy lines. Our foot soldiers engaged the other troops in the open and took the battle to them. The troops fought very
well, but more training would have raised them to great heights. They fought with great spirit. Although the enemy fought hard, we finally succeeded in overwhelming them after a long battle. Commanders on the scene ordered their troops to salvage what they could from the remains of the enemy
forces..

Captain Taurnil: 1297 Food

After the battle.... Taurnil's forces were victorious in the battle, but suffered huge losses. Taurnil appeared to have survived. Celedhring's forces were destroyed/routed in the battle. Celedhring appeared to have survived.

Meanwhile at Dol Guldur:

Battle at 2715
In the Mild climate of the Mixed Forest of 2715, a conflict took place in the early hours of the evening in a dense and oppressive fog.

At the head of a calm army rode Captain Beoraborn of the nation of the Woodmen. The mount on which he rode moved calmly to the front of the battle lines. Behind him the forming ranks were filled with:

800 Beorning footmen w/battle axes wooden none a mob
600 Woodman archers w/long bows arrows none ragged ranks

At the head of a calm army rode Commander Waulfa of the nation of the Woodmen. The mount on which he rode moved calmly to the front of the battle lines. Behind him the forming ranks were filled with:
Troops Weapons Armor Formations

1000 Beorning footmen w/battle axes wooden/bronze none/leather ragged ranks
1200 Woodman footmen w/hand axes bronze leather ragged ranks

At the head of a highly energetic army rode Lord Mahrcared of the nation of the Éothraim. In his hands was borne the glowing Sword called Herugrim. The mount on which he rode cantered anxiously along the side of the battle lines. Behind him the forming ranks were filled with:
Troops Weapons Armor Formations

2449 Éothraim horsemen w/lances bronze/steel leather/bronze ragged ranks
1108 Plainsman horsemen w/broadswords bronze/steel leather/bronze ragged ranks

300 Lesser Dúnadan footmen w/shortswords bronze/steel bronze ragged ranks

507 Dúnadan knights w/lances bronze/steel bronze ragged ranks
507 Dúnadan knights w/shortswords bronze/steel bronze ragged ranks

At the head of a calm army rode Captain Wodurishak of the nation of the Dragon Lord. The mount on which he rode moved calmly to the front of the battle lines. Behind him the forming ranks were filled with:

400 Troll footsoldiers w/battle axes wooden none a mob
300 Mannish slaves w/maces bronze leather a mob

The Major Town of Dol Guldur flying the flag of the Dragon Lord is situated in the Mixed Forest here. It is fortified by a Keep, and it is under siege or attack.

Report from Mahrcared.....My commanders moved among the troops before battle, readying them, bolstering their resolve, and issuing last minute orders. These troops didn't need much encouragement and waved and
joked with their Commanders, offering bets on who would find the best plunder. Finally the order was passed down the ranks.. Charge!! Charge!!
Against the forces of Wodurishak, they met our charge with their standard formation.

After the battle had joined in earnest, heroes made their presence known all over the battlefield. Mahrcared fought side by side with the troops and diverted many a blade during the pitched battle with his glowing Sword.
Report from Mahrcared.....Our cavalry were severely hindered by the dense woods in accomplishing their objectives. The troops fought very well, but more training would have raised them to great heights. They fought with great spirit. Although the enemy fought hard, we finally succeeded in overwhelming them after a long battle. Subject: Simmering anger

Aelistae shook her head, as she slipped trough the light copse that surrounded the mouth of the cave. It was in an effort to try and clear her thoughts, and soothe the burning anger she felt at what Kas had done. But try as she might she could not quite calm the fire that raged within her.

Among the Elistraeyn a blade was only to be used to venerate the Goddess, or when one intended to wet its edge with the blood of the enemy. To use it upon a friend, upon someone who had prayed before the Lady to heal them when their life was slipping away, was an insult to her and her faith that Aelistae would not forget.

‘Well my duty to her is done. Since she is not part of this expedition, we can part ways in peace and think no more about it.’

That thought alone brought Aelistae some relief. She finally came upon a pile of her discarded clothes, and she changed into a loose blouse and leather skirt after peeling off the shirt she had ‘appropriated’ from Nash.

The drow priestess pouted slightly as she poked a finger through the thin gash in the linen shirt that had appeared where the bandit had slashed at her. But if she feared Nash’s disapproval, she need not have worried.

There was no sign of the human in the clearing in which she had danced before her Goddess and had danced more earthily with him. She could find no indication that he had ever been there at all, until she stumbled upon the forms of four orcs and a warg that had been slain and hidden in the undergrowth nearby. Buried in the earth was a small, silver cross, which Aelistae took. She doubted that the item had been left for her to find, but she knew it had been Nash’s. And that was enough.

‘Return to me soon,’ Aelistae thought, as she turned and headed back to the campsite.

---

Tap, tap, tap…

Aelistae carefully worked at the black inter-locking rings of her armour, as her companions slept on oblivious even as the first light of dawn crept into the sky above. Few of her companions it seemed had been perturbed by her absence. And, it was only as they slept soundly that Aelistae realized how the bandits had been able to infiltrate the camp so easily.

‘They went back underground putting themselves at risk, and exposing those left behind. And yet they rescued the child.’ Aelistae mused, her eyes falling briefly to the sleeping boy. ‘I don’t know whether to applaud them for their bravery or curse them for their foolishness.’

Finally the tapping ceased and she held her armour up to inspect her work. The chain links that had been severed by the giant spider had been painstakingly pressed back into place. Aelistae allowed herself a smile. The new joints looked so seem-less that she struggled to tell where exactly the spider’s mandibles had bitten through.

’Now for the other.’ Aelistae slowly laid her armour down, and picked up the grime-encrusted chainmail that had been taken from the captive Kas had taken. A little tender loving care and it’ll make fine armour for our fine practitioner of Kyorlin Plynn, she added, referring to Artanis and her use of both sword and shield.

“Aelistae, may I talk with you for a moment.?” A voice broke the quiet stillness of the camp, and the drow woman was surprised to find it emanated from Loriel. The elvish woman had shown little desire to converse with her before – an attitude that Aelistae had taken as being due to her feeling uncomfortable about her drow heritage.

“What is it you wish to say, Sister?”

[I’ll back post a reply]

Aelistae laid a soft kiss upon Artanis’ forehead. Her skin was blistered horribly, and her hair was all but gone. All through the night, Aelistae had had to bear the sights and sounds of Artanis’ discomfort in the knowledge that she could not do anything to aid her. As morning came, however, that changed.

“Belbau ilta dosst dumoas Jallil ji il xal sundu lu'alure h'uena mzild.”

A healthy pallor returned to her features as her skin knitted and reformed itself, and as a healthy lock of hair sprouted from her otherwise bare head.

[Aelistae will first do a Cure Moderate Wounds, and spend one charge from her Healing Belt to do 4d8+3 healing. She’ll then do a Cure Light for another 1d8+3 healing on Artanis. If she still needs healing after that I’ll decide what to do after I know what the results of the rolls are]

“I altered the straps slightly, on the armour we took from Kas’ battle-captive. I think it should fit you, if you wish to try it,” she added, handing over the hauberk and leggings of chain mail armour.

The others rose, and after seeing that Xaris needed her attention top, Aelistae left Artanis’ side to tend to the brave gnome.

“It seems we only ever talk when you’re in need of attention, Xaris. A woman could get easily get put out at that you know,” she joked as she tended to the gnome’s wounds.

[Aelistae will do the same to Xaris as she did with Artanis.]

A smile returned to Aelistae’s lips, and she felt her spirit’s lift…until Kas decided to advertize her plans to hunt down the bandits that had attacked the night before.

"The common folk have enough problems to face, besides dealing with their own kind preying on them,” she explained, as if her reasoning was infallible.

“The common folk really have a problem if you’re the one looking out for them,” Aelistae found herself quipping in response, her earlier frustration making itself manifest once more. “The reason they attacked was because you ran off in the middle of the night without telling anyone where you had gone. That left the camp unguarded, and disaster nearly struck as a result.”

“If you wish to go chasing after bandits, go. I will not stop you, and nor will I mourn your absence. But do not expect me to follow.”

[OOC: Aelistae will use her spell splots for silence and wave of grief when she spontaneously casts the 2 CMWs. She’ll exchange summon monster 1 and true strike for the 2 CLWs

The drow spoken is: ‘Give her your blessing Lady so she may sing and dance once more.’]
