Well I really should have looked on google image myself because there are loads of images out there!

Unfortunately a lot of them are of Lolth worshipping drow (boo! hiss!), and the rest are, umm, a little too revealing.

I did find one that is awesome, but I don't have anywhere to upload the image to.

Thanks both for looking!

Well I figured that both for a drow and for a priestess of Eilistraee such a thing as 'marriage' wouldn't mean much. Qilue Veladorn after all is known (partly) for the numerous affairs she has had and I don't think it's ever been condemned by the Dark Maiden.

The first of those pics looks funky Devalero. Where did you find it?

Topic: (least) Favorite Character Death
Subject: Well...

I thought I'd relate an event that ended a long campaign based in Mystara (an old campaign setting from the '80s for the uninitiated).

The PCs were all a bunch of rogue, desperadoes and just generally very unpleasant people. It consisted of a deeply racist orc, an insane barbarian (one too many hits to the head), an (annoying) elvish cleric, and my character who was a mercenary treasure-hunter.

The majority of the PCs had all been geased after falling foul of a very powerful cleric, and forced to end the life of an upstart snake creature that was striving to become a God in its own right. At first the group decided to resist the task imposed upon them, but when they started getting sick they had no choice but to try and complete it. Privately my character was thrilled at the news. He had not been geased, and being a hunter of rare artifacts it was right up his alley.

So the group entered the vast ziggarat that was this creature's domain. And it was vast. There were traps everywhere and nagas around each corner. Furthermore there was a band of catfolk who had infilitrated the same structure and were fighting a war of their own against the snake-men. Worse still when we finally saw the snake creature we were supposed to kill, any courage we had left us. It was huge and bloated and filled a 50'x50' room all on its own.

So the PCs decided to do the wise thing and run!

It was after we escaped that things got interesting. In our explorations we had come across a half-orc who had ignored us but was single-handedly slaughtering nagas. After we escaped the ziggurat the same orc approached us. He produced a dagger that he claimed was an artifact that could kill the snake-creature and he wanted to trade it. His reasoning was that he knew that we needed to kill the snake, and that he wasn't interested in doing it himself.

We looked at the half-orc. The half-orc looked at us back. We noted the medley of wonderful weapons the half-orc carried alongside the dagger. The half-orc yawned. We decided to overpower the half-orc and pillage his corpse. The half-orc changed into an bronze dragon.

Needless to say we all died a horrid and brutish death.

Hmm, that's a good point. I suppose it would be a bit much to hope that a colony of goblins were living in a 10'x10' room.

The gaming cliche that's always amused me had been the elf and dwarf duo. i can't tell you how many times I have seen an arrogant, flighty elf and brooding dwarf developing a brusque friendship on the lines of Legolas and Gimli.

And on that note, why do all dwarves have to talk in a bad Scottish accent?

I like them. They add something different that does help flesh out an otherwise faceless NPC.

Thanks for the offer Longshadow. Unfortunately I've never found any suitable pics of drow for Aelistae. If any one has any they know of, though, feel free to point me in the right direction.

Subject: A timely rescue

The hood Aelistae had worn had finally conceded defeat and had slipped from her head entirely. Aelistae, however, made no move to replace it. The man before her – the man who had rescued her – knew who and what she was and yet did not seem to care. She peered into the blues of his eyes looking for some sign of deceit, but she could find none.

“I had hoped…” Aelistae muttered with a shake of her head that freed more of her white bangs of hair, “I suppose it doesn’t matter what I had hoped.”

“But you saved my life,” she added looking again at the man who had introduced himself as Ash. He was perhaps a little too tall for the preference of most drow, and his clothes seemed bizarre to her eyes.

’He is handsome, though’ Aelistae concluded, a strange smile playing across her lips.

On an impulse she stood on her tips of her feet, pulled the man closer and brushed her lips against his. It was not a lengthy, lover’s kiss, and she soon broke it, but the smile that she wore remained in place.

She bowed before him in more sober fashion. “You have my thanks.”

A crash and a curse in the street below her warned her that she should not linger, and with a final wave at Ash she quickly departed. The buildings of Darromar huddled together and so it was not hard for Aelistae to jump from one roof-top to the other, until the gates of the city neared.

A short while later she found herself near Bart’s rendezvous, where Linnix, Barrbarra and Xaris were already waiting. Aelistae moved to join them, still sporting that smile.

Do CDs for the DM mean extra tough and nasty villains?

On a more serious note, I have both been enjoying the DM-ing and the posts from everyone. It's easy to craft a post when one is playing with interesting characters and fleshed out NPCs.

“I…” Aelistae stuttered finding herself lost for words. The clanging of a crossbow bolt to her right, quickly reminded her that none were needed. Now was not the time to question who, what or why, but merely to accept the help that was offered and escape her precarious position.

She quickly placed the dagger she was holding into its sheath beneath her boot, and then grabbed the ladder that had been slung over the side of the building. A moment later she began to clamber upwards.

Aelistae heard the footsteps above her, and knew that any escape over the roof-tops was closed. Her situation was desperate, and she quickly realized that the only hope she had was to get through the shuttered window that barred her way.

‘Open, open,’ she pleaded, as she pushed at the shutters. When that did not work she reached to her calf, produced a dagger and shoved it between the two planks of wood that sealed her only escape. It was a manoeuvre borne of desperation but she was hoping it would not take much skill to flip the latch that held the shutters in place.

OOC: I’m assuming that using a dagger while perched at a window-sill is doable since it’s a light weapon. If using the dagger doesn’t work, she’ll try to break down the shutters with her fists and the butt of the dagger.

Subject: So I take it we can't just be friends then?

“Mai’ai,” Aelistae cursed softly in the language of the drow.

She desired to find some measure of acceptance among the humans of Tethyr and to pay for past sins. She believed that she was embarking on a road that would allow her to make some progress towards that goal, and so had allowed her guard to fall.

She had never been so foolish.

Looking upon the unshaven features of the man before her, and catching the looks of his companions out of the corner of her eye, Aelistae knew there was little she could say to convince them to leave her in peace. She saw the same mixture of hunger and hatred on their faces that she had seen in drow raiding parties: that which led the Menzoberranzenar to hunt their prey without mercy and remorse. And could she blame them for hating her? Had she not committed crimes that deserved their hatred?

‘No,’ she answered to herself, clenching her jaw, ‘I am not like them. I am not like her.’

“I wish I could give you what you want, but I can’t. I wish I could explain to you that you are wrong about me, but I think your ears are closed to my pleas. I…I am sorry.”

All of a sudden Aelistae was surrounded by a thick, impenetrable darkness. In a flurry of activity she began to clamber up one of the walls to her right, heading for where she remembered there to be a window. She hoped that she would be able to reach it and force her way through, while the men remained confused by her ruse. Time would tell whether she would succeed.

OOC: ‘Mai’ai’ = Idiot

Aelistae is dropping a globe of darkness upon the earth beneath her feet, and hoping to climb 10’ and then force her way through a window. That’s probably 2 rounds of actions rather than 1, but I’m hoping her assailants are too confused or hampered to actually strike at her.

The only thing that Aelistae might need is a horse. Since Linnix has a horse and cart, however, and since I don't see Aelistae being very comfortable around horses, I'm hoping she can hitch a lift on that.

Aelistae cocked her head as Linnix expressed her desire to learn more about her. It was difficult for her to tell whether the young woman was serious or not, especially since she knew so little about humans and their mannerisms. In the end, though, she decided to take Linnix’s words on faith.

“I would be happy to converse later if you have questions you would wish to ask.”

As first Xaris and then Barrb introduced themselves, Aelistae nodded politely to them both. From the elven woman, however, there was silence. It was not something that surprised the drow, because of all surface races the elves had reason to hate and fear the Illythiri. Even those surface elves that joined the Eilistraeen in their moonlight ceremonies were slow to trust her kind.

‘And yet it still hurts,’ she thought, glancing briefly at Loriel. ’Although perhaps it is something else that holds her tongue.’

Aelistae was not convinced, but she did not have much time to think over the matter. Bart approached the small group with tears in his eyes, and prostated himself before them. Then came a beautiful woman who lifted the farmer from the place he had taken upon the earth, and introduced herself as a follower of Tymora.

Aelistae returned the woman’s bow with a nod of her head. “I am Aelistae D’Vrann, Blade Sister of Eilistraee.”

After the others had introduced themselves once more Bart offered them all a hearty handshake in the human fashion, and the promise to meet them all by the city gates with supplies in an hour.

The drow woman nodded her assent, and then swiftly left to make her own preparations. There was not much to do. She slipped back into the inn at which she stayed, careful not to show her face to any of its patrons. She gathered her few belongings quickly, and then slipped out once more, leaving the money that she owed upon the bed in which she had slept.

The only problem she had as she made her way to the rendezvous at the city gate was that it was impossible to hide herself as she had done before. She wore an intricately crafted sword strapped to her back and carried a bow that she could not hide beneath her cloak. In addition the backpack she wore prevented her cloak from enveloping her completely and exposed the black chain mail and form fitting leathers that she was clad in.

If Aelistae cared much about the awkward glances she received, however, she did not show it. She had found some purpose after long months of travel, and it gave her strength.

“I thought you were after wealth and notoriety,” Aelistae remarked to Linnix with the hint of mirth in her voice, after she had signed Bart James’ charter. “Well regardless of your reasons, I am glad that we’ll have the chance to journey together.”

What surprised the drow priestess even more than Linnix’s decision was the fact that others had chosen to eschew an easy reward and sign the farmer’s parchment. There was a half-human woman, who towered over Aelistae and who bore the scars of a hardened warrior. Shortly after came a diminutive gnome bearing the trappings of one used to living in the wilds. Finally there came an elf, whose eyes matched Aelistae’s violet hue, but whose features betrayed both a sun and moon elven heritage.

“My name is Aelistae. It would honour me to learn the names your mothers gave you,” she remarked simply after she had picked her way to the small group, and inched her hood back to reveal more of her face.

“May the Dark Maiden bless you Sister,” she added in the elven tongue to Loriel. “I can assure you I mean you no harm, despite the colour of my skin. I hope that in time, you will allow me to win your trust.”

OOC: I’m concluding that for an elf (even a drow) spotting that Loriel is of mixed heritage isn’t too difficult. If you’d rather Aelistae not know that Brianna, I’ll happily edit the post.

Interesting idea Kaelyn. So if we choose to keep it private will you keep the recipient in the dark too?

Oh on another note, I've just noticed a typo (that's my fault) on Aelistae's sheet. Under 'attacks' she has a composite longbow listed as one of her weapons, but under 'gear' she has a light crossbow. She's actually carrying a comp. longbow and not a crossbow at all, so if you could change that I'd be grateful.

Subject: Yep and yep

I have used props in the past, but that's only because I DM infrequently so I have time to prepare. Some of the best campaigns I've played in are those in which the DM has used props, or has even just affected amusing accents to flesh out the NPCs.

I have also played with people who have dressed up. But in my opinion I always found that they looked a little ridiculous!

Aelistae nodded as Linnix introduced herself, causing a stray lock of silvery-white hair to escape the confines of her hood.

“I am honoured that you would share your name with me, Linnix. I am called Aelistae D’Vrann.”

After sitting down and asking her question, Aelistae smiled as the blonde woman explained her reason for being at the courtyard.

“You’re wise to be cautious, I think. If one moves in a herd of rothé, the predator can quickly become the prey,” she replied, echoing a saying common among the soldiers of Menzoberranzen. “Sometimes, though, there is no alternative but to do just that.”

Aelistae fell silent as the Queen-Monarch appeared and introduced herself. To the drow’s eyes she carried herself as any Matron Mother might, except for the fact that she did not command but asked. Those assembled were given the option of aiding a boisterous smith, a glib merchant, an enigmatic wizard, a humble farmer, or to just walk away and refuse their Queen.

Aelistae found herself liking the practice.

It was the last speaker, however, that caught her attention. He spoke of his poverty, his desire to build a home, and to provide a refuge for all those that wished it. But, more than that, he offered a chance for Aelistae to exorcise feelings of guilt that had long plagued her.

“I don’t know which path you’ll choose to follow, Linnix, but if it is different from mine I hope that one day I will be able to repay you for the kindness you have shown me.”

With that said, Aelistae pushed her way through the crowd, and to the only patron that most of those assembled would rather avoid.

“I will aid you, if you choose to accept my help,” she said simply to Bart. “But first there is something you must know.”

The drow priestess moved her hands to her hood, and slipped it off her head. Wide, nocturnal eyes framed below narrow tufts of stark white hair were revealed to the farmer. She unveiled an angular but beautiful face that was the colour of midnight shadow, and freed the chaotic bangs of her silvery hair. She had decided it was time to disclose her heritage. It was a risk, but one that she had no choice but to take.

“I am drow, but please I mean you no harm.” Aelistae crossed her arms diagonally across her chest to emphasize the point. “Your Queen spoke of this being a chance for even a criminal to re-write their fate. I ask only for that same chance. Let me sign your parchment, and I will show you that I mean you no ill-will.”

[Provided Bart agrees (and Aelistae isn’t arrested!):]

Aelistae signed her name quickly, having no desire to linger under the gaze of those that might object to the presence of a drow. With the deed done, she replaced her hood and slipped back into the crowd.

Subject: 3 women, a gnome and a drow...I'm sure there's a joke there somewhere

Aelistae squinted her eyes uncomfortably. The sun had only just begun its assent when she reached the square, but, even though she had spent decades upon the surface of Faerun, the memory of the searing pain it had caused her when she had first glimpsed it was hard to forget. For several tendays she thought the burning sensation in her eyes would leave her blind or drive her mad. In the end it didn’t do either, and she had grown accustomed to its presence. Or rather as accustomed to that fiery ball in the sky as a creature born in the lightless Underdark could be.

‘Thankfully the Lady favours the moon and not the sun,’ Aelistae concluded, and pulled the hood she wore even lower to shield her eyes.

Several men, women and one gnome had already gathered in the courtyard, but the drow priestess shied away from their presence and found a more secluded and shaded spot at which to wait. It was a patch of flattened earth nestled beneath a tree. The only problem seemed to be that a human woman seemed to have had the same idea.

Her colouring seemed exotic to Aelistae’s violet eyes, possessed as she was with blonde hair and fair skin. Her garb, though, was simple and betrayed no sign that she was one of those looking to answer the summons.

“May I join you?” Aelistae inquired politely to the woman, in her lilting accent.

[Assuming Linnix agrees]

“Thank you,” she replied, nodding her thanks.

Aelistae sat under the canopy of the tree and pulled her legs to her chest. A flash of dark skin was evident along her thigh where her skirt and armour parted, but she made no effort to cover herself. She was confident that the shade of the tree would make the blue-black of her skin seem like a trick of the light.

‘Besides,’ she thought, ‘there will come a time when these people will have to learn what I am.’

“Are you here for the…gathering?” she asked the woman beside her, although she was unsure if she had hit upon the right word.
