Make sense to me.

About the staff, the reason why I suggested we sell it is because it doesn't really fit in with any of our characters (if only because to activate it would require a good result from a use magic device check). Plus it'll maybe allow us to purchase a few trinkets that could be of use.

Dungeon maps really. But generally something that gives you the flexibility to create a map for different types of encounters (eg in a forest clearing).

Meh...Campaign Cartographer requires Windows.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good mapping programs I could use for DMing (specifically anything that would work on Mac OS X)?

My maps are always embarrassingly bad, so anything that could improve them would be awesome.

Topic: Sojourn in Middle Earth
Subject: Updates

Several more weeks have been and gone, and now turn 12 is looming. Since a lot has happened, I thought I'd try the Peter Jackson approach to conveying a lot of information about Middle Earth in a concise but understandable form. If you remember in the Two Towers film there's a scene in which Faramir's aide-de-camp conveys to him the latest news of the War, by running his hand over a map. This is my (slightly less good) version:

The noise was something he hadn’t heard for over a millennia. The din of hammer hitting anvils, and the heavy footfall of armour-clad elves could be heard everywhere in the hidden refuge of Rhubar. For over a millennia his people had remained apart from the concerns of Middle Earth. Swift arrows always awaited any servants of Darkness that dared to stray into their forest homes, but their ears had remained to deaf to the envoys, entreaties and pleas for aid from others. Until now.

“What news of the War?”

His voice startled the lone travel-worn elf, dismounting from atop an equally weary charger.

“Milord Amroth,” the figure breathed, before dropping into a reverential bow.

“Spare me the formalities just this once Mablung,” the tall Sindarin elf replied before closing the few paces separated him from his kinsman, and pulling him to his feet. “What news?”

“Word has trickled through to Ohtar of Edhellond of the dire need that Gondor is in. The Black Numenoreans of Umbar – the Corsairs some call them – have thrown their weight behind the Dark Lord. Several thousands have landed on the banks of the Anduin, and are even now besieging Pelargir. The Princes of Dol Amroth have been unable to react in the manner that they would have. Prince Celdrahil has been slain, and the response from Dol Amroth had been slower than Tarondar of Gondor hoped.”

“And Ohtar how has he responded?”

“He has set sail Milord. As word came of the Corsairs and their treachery, Ohtar sailed in behind their black ships. The Men were so eager to pillage Gondor, they left their whole fleet unguarded. He intends to burn it.”

“So that will leave both Harondar and Umbar defenceless to our navies.”

“Quite, Milord.”

“What of Mordor? Has the Enemy unleashed his full might?”

“No. The Men of Arnor and the Horselords of the Eothraim have tried to draw out their forces, but for now the Black Gate remains firmly closed. The Easterlings of Khand have effectively harried and destroyed and foul orcs that have sought to attack us here at Rhun. But even now Ovatha of Khand and Gaerandil of the Northmen of Khan call for our aid. I told them that…”

“We will march.”

“Milord?”

“Tell them that we will march. The Sindarin will go to War.”

Subject: Items

We have lots of artwork, gems etc. as party loot that I think we should sell to Firin. That'll raise 1054gp (depending on if he pays the full amount of what they're worth).

If we sell the staff we picked up we could also raise some extra cash too, but that's only if Deuce/Talus wants to part with it.

Aelistae can't really afford any items at the moment, but I'm going to ask if Firin has some items from the Magic Item Compendium (since I already asked if he has a magic elven courtblade and he doesn't *sniffs*)

The items are:
Circlet of Mages
Acrobat Boots
Boots of Agile Leaping
Ring of Silent Spells
Iron Ward Diamond (armour crystal)

Aelistae was not an accomplished rider, but even she could feel the Daisy’s unease as she rode atop her. The white mare whinnied forlornly from time to time and her whole massive frame seemed somehow smaller in the morning light, without Elesia.

“Udos orn kyorl ilta 'sohna,”* she whispered into the horse’s ear.

She did not know if her words had an effect, but by the time Dylan had sung his first note on the road, Daisy’s sprits seemed to have lifted. Her ears swiveled about as if possessed with a life of their own, and it was all Aelistae could do to prevent her from breaking out in an excited canter.

The drow priestess smiled. ’If only all out spirits could be lifted so easily.’

“You sing well,” she remarked after a song sung by Dylan’s deep timbre voice came to an end. “Do you practice bae-queshel or…‘song magic’? I think that’s what it would be called in the trade tongue.”

[OOC: I’m happy to backpost if you’d like to reply Sibby]

---

The hours wore on, and when the fiery Sun was still at its apex, they finally reached their goal. Except that even Aelistae could deduce from under the hood of her cloak that the temple had long since fallen into ruin. The earth had been blackened by fire, and the area was strewn with twisted chunks of rock. The only structure still standing was a crude archway that framed a doorway that led deep underground.

“Welcome welcome!” a strange-looking figure shouted from atop a pile of rocks. The large drapes of cloth it was clad in made it impossible to tell what race or sex it was. And it was only as the creature explained it was a merchant that Aelistae realized that the voice she had heard had not been shouted at all, but had been communicated as a thought, straight into her mind.

Aelistae slowly dismounted from Daisy, as Dylan inquired about what had happened to the temple.

Her eyes carefully scanned the area over which the rubble of the temple had been scattered, but she could see no one else hidden away in ambush. And the creature itself seemed too small to be an illithid and too thin to be duergar.

“We will trade with you, but first let us create some rules. No drawing of weapons, no ambushes, no spells – other than that to determine the value of an item, and no tricks of the mind. Are we agreed?”

[Presuming that the terms are acceptable to him:]

“We came here for healing, because many of us have been bitten and now carry the curse of the ze-illrin – lycanthropes you would call them. Do you have anything that could help us? We would also need some rations. We have gold, gems and items for trade in return.

[* “We will see her again.”]

I discovered recently that anyone can download a free pdf containing the (Ad&D) FR supplement 'Lands of Intrigue'. It is a supplement that basically fleshes out Tethyr as of 1370 DR (ie the year and place that our campaign is set in).

So if you're interested at all, and you don't know much about Tethyr, you can download it here.

Aelistae’s violet eyes widened in surprise as Linnix carefully repeated the phrase she herself had just spoken in the language of the dark elves. Her pronounciation was not perfect, but then the language had evolved to be difficult for outsiders to speak and comprehend. What surprised and impressed Aelistae was the sincerity that lay behind those words. It was as if she had always uttered those words in her mind, but had only now, for the first time, finally given them voice.

‘I pray we live long enough, so that I may teach her your language. So that I may take her to one of your hidden places, and show her the Dance as it is on the High Hunt.’

Her dark, sable hand squeezed Linnix’s in quiet appreciation. And then the dancing began….

“A linath lu' killian,” Aelistae muttered reverently after Linnix had spoken. “Every hour it seems you become more like a Dark Lady.”

“We will sing to remember Sheva, and for Elesia…” Aelistae paused as she struggled to find the words. “We will make the vow to meet her again.”

The drow priestess ran a weary hand through the silvery bangs of her hair, before holding out her hand to Linnix. “Come let us start.”

[OOC: The drow literally means 'By Song and Sword', but has the same purpose for Aelistae as 'Amen' might.]

Subject: Snatching victory from the jaws of a mutant

Tazi shrugged after the Tech-Priest pushed past her, with barely a word spoken to acknowledge her presence. The hissing of his cogs and the jangling of his metallic implants proved to be fitting accompaniment to the rattle of her gun, as she fired it into the head of the unmoving mutant. The creature’s body shuddered involuntarily before finally falling limp – as if some higher power had suddenly thrown off a switch.

Tazi broke out into a broad smile. “Well, well…looks here as if I got the killing blow,” she quipped to Daggerfall. “Your ass is mine. Literally.”

Her moment of glory, however, was cut short by the sound of Carrigan’s voice over the speakers. As usual, she didn’t sound as if she was in the best of moods.

The Sister of Battle groaned. “Looks like we better move out. Let’s check the remaining cells to see if any more heretics are free, and then…”

Tazi stopped suddenly. After only taking a few steps around the narrow bend in the hallway, she spotted Mkoll standing over the body of a man clad in the uniform of the Adeptus Arbites.

“Is he alive?”

I like 3rd ed. And hard copies of 3/3.5 ed. material is easier to get of than Ad&D stuff.

But regarding 4th edition, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Ok this is scary. No sooner had I posted that, that I was reading something written by Keith Baker (one of the designers of 4th ed.), and he defends 4th ed. by comparing it to an action movie.

I did get around (finally) to playing 4th ed., and one of the chaps I was playing with compared 4th ed. to an action movie whereas 3rd ed is a novel. I think that comment is spot on. 4th ed is a better system if all you're interested in is combat and dungeon-crawling, but not if you're interested in telling a story.

For instance multi-classing works better in game mechanics terms. But it also mitigates against the idea of a chaotic rogue suffering a change of heart and becoming a cleric (to take one example).

I also think that 4th ed. was designed so that the DM would not have to tell a story. Instead it's marketed as a new toy that parents can buy their kids (with a new version of the toy appearing every year). It's certainly not marketed for adults who enjoy roleplaying.

That doesn't mean that 4th ed. is a bad system. I think it's very good, but not at what I want to do.

Subject: Ensuring that one of us is saved...

Aelistae eyes fell to the small vial that Dylan held aloft. If she was like most other drow she would have taken the small bottle and have drunk its contents without a second thought. But she was not. Though she longed to drink the potion and ensure that she would never become a bestial werewolf, she knew that if she took the potion when others needed it, she would already be a beast.

“Give the potion to Bartholomew. If he falls his children will lose their father, and his partner her consort. Give it to him so, if the worst comes, one of us will be saved.”

“Now,” she continued with a small cough, “let us share some food, and maybe a song or two.”
