Subject: Misplaced sympathy

Aelistae slowly picked up her sword and wiped it reverently of the vile lycanthropic blood that stained it, even as Xaris revealed what had caused his sudden transformation.

“You’re lucky to still be alive. Meddling with the Weave is dangerous – even for those who have spent centuries studying it. I wish I could take you to Qilué but…she is far away and we are here.” The drow priestess sheathed her sword and shook her head, as if trying to dispel an unwelcome thought. “We should ask the people at this temple about what happened, they may be able to explain it.”

Talus began to drag the corpses of the wolves into a heap, and Aelistae moved to help him. It was an undignified task, but one she was happy to perform. The comments that Xaris made about the werewolves, however, caused her to cock her head quizzically.

“We cannot afford to show respect to these creatures. If they are any more in the area they will gladly feast upon the corpses of their own kind. And we burn it as a warning to those of evil heart who think to disturb the tranquil beauty of these places.”

“Do not feel sad Xaris,” she continued as she laid a hand upon the gnome’s shoulder. “This…pack, were devoted to the Dark Goddess Shar. And it was for Her that they were looking for a blood sacrifice. If we hadn’t killed them, they would have sought that blood elsewhere.”

Aelistae squeezed the gnome’s shoulder softly, before turning to finish the task she had set herself.

It would have helped, although it is a little grisly to profit from the death of a companion in that manner, and to use their weapons.

Plus it was the DMs call at the time.

Kaelyn, can you put up the prices for the new magical loot, so that those who are interested can bid on the items?

I imagine that all the items will be wanted by various people among us.

I figure Aelistae's vision of how to tend to the her body would be to cremate it in a pyre, but I left it open for people to insert their ideas.

I agree that it's a bit grisly to pick over her corpse, and I'm happy for her to be buried/cremated etc. in whatever she's currently wearing. But I've never come across anyone being buried etc. wearing a backpack...which is why I brought up the bag of holding.

Plus it's a useful item for the party to collectively own.

No need to apologize, I think it was my fault when I updated Aelistae's sheet after she levelled.

I did discover, though, that the wand she has only has 28 charges (it's on page 30 of the Q/A).

If Artanis is still short of max hp, Aelistae will bump her to full with a cure light wounds spell (since she still has some first level spells memorized). And she'll give a few cure minors to Talus.

I also noticed that Aelistae doesn't have the Wand of CLW in her character sheet. I'm sure she 'bought' the one that Xaris recovered, with 35 charges (or maybe less).

Yes I was going to use the last couple of spells Aelistae has to heal with, and then start zapping people with her wand.

Bart can use a CLW wand? Funky.

On another note, I just looked over Sheva's character sheet and would you believe she had a silvered dagger? Ugh...

Regarding her equipment, I take it Bart will take it all? The bag of holding she has could be useful for the whole party to use for loot.

Subject: Searching for an alternative

Aelistae’s blade quivered in her hand, its keen point hovering inches over her breast. The moonlit blade whispered its promise that it would end her life quickly, without pain or remorse. But she could not summon the will to close those last few inches, and allow it to steal her life away.

Her head echoed with the promise she had made Elesia, that their paths would cross again. Her mind’s eye was full of the desperate look Nash had given her when last they had met. And her heart pounded with the love she had for him.

So her sword fell from her numb fingers and clattered to the earth, even before Talus, Bart and then Linnix sought to intervene.

“There’s still hope,” Aelistae echoed quietly, repeating the phrase Bart had used. “I’m sorry, I…so much has happened, and we have lost so much, it’s easy to forget why we struggle on.”

The drow priestess raised her head, her jaw once more set with determination. “So we go on, and we seek out this temple. All of us will need their priestesses to cleanse us of the curse. There is no way to tell us who among us is afflicted. The creature who spoke was not the only zze-ill among them. Some of the other wolves were human or gnome or elf-kind once, or they would not have fled before the Lady’s Grace.”

Aelistae passed a weary hand over her eyes. “We need to burn the corpses of the zze-illrin and tend Sheva’s body. I would do it myself, but I do not know the human custom.”

About the wolves/werewolves thing. Aelistae turned both a 'wolf' and a 'dire wolf' during the combat, and she could only have done that if both of those were lycanthropes. So it's not just those who have been bitten by the big bad that we need to worry about.

Maybe Talus can look over the other 'wolf' corpses before Aelistae burns them? Since those werewolves may have items squirreled away.

Finally Aelistae isn't interested in any of the magic items recovered from the big bad. The cloak displays the (un)holy image of Shar, the belt is best for Xaris or Artanis, and using a staff rather than a sword is taboo for an Eilistraeyn.

Subject: A pyrrhic victory

For thousand of years – before the dawn of Mankind, and before the Illythiiri had fallen into darkness – the Eilistraeyn had fought to preserve the natural beauty of the wilderness from those that would despoil it. There was no greater foe for them than the zze-illrin – men and women cursed to walk moon-lit nights as murderous creatures driven only by their lust for blood and meat.

Aelistae had fought against them before. And each successful hunt had been a time for celebration and dance for her and her Sisters.

This time, however, there could be no rejoicing. The drow priestess knew that even though they had killed their foe, the price had been far too high.

“There’s nothing I can do for her,” Aelistae remarked bitterly as she looked down upon the brutalized body of Sheva. The woman’s throat had been torn from her body, and so little of her face remained that she struggled to recognize the kind soul that had offered her aid when Aelistae and Linnix had needed it most.

The offending creature stood several feet away, Sheva’s blood still dripping from its maw. It tried desperately to flee from her presence, still cowed by the power of her Goddess. But that did not save it. Aelistae fetched her bow and peppered the wolf with arrows until it slumped over, resigned to its own death.

“There’s nothing I can do for us either,” she added, the bitterness that had been present in her voice replaced with weary sadness. “These creatures were zze-illrin – werewolves I think your kind call them. We have all been bitten. Tomorrow night when the moon comes we will lose our mind, our bodies will becomes as these creatures and we will tear each other apart.”

“I…I’m sorry that our journey ends like this. But I’m glad to have known each of you, even…even if it was only for a short time.”

The drow woman bowed her head, a tear glimmering in her eye as she prepared to turn her blade upon herself.

Just read the update and...we're alive! *dances* I can't believe we survived through that since that was one nasty battle. Congrats everyone!

As for the dire wolf, Aelistae will move to kill it while it's still turned (by shooting her bow at it). As far as she's concerned it's a lycanthrope (since she turned it) and hence deserves to die.

I'll post later today when I get back home.

I think that's a really good idea.

And on another note, is there somewhere on the site that provides info. for new users? Something along the lines of what the site is about, how to go about getting involved in a game etc.

Apologies if such a thing already exists!

Subject: Flanking the Flanker

Aelistae had spent decades on the surface - decades in which she had forced herself to look at the Sun, until its glare no longer stung at her eyes or blinded her. The light that burst forth from Xaris, however, was too white - too bright - for her to cope with. All she could do was close her eyes, until the pain dissipated and darkness was restored.

When she opened them she was surprised to see Bart free of all the wounds he had been inflicted with, and even more surprised to see that Xaris was now paler than a svirfneblin.

Aelistae shook her head, and closed the last few paces to where her sword lay.

‘Now let’s see what you’re made of,’ she thought, as she felt the comforting weight of the blade in her hand, and closed to attack one of the werewolves.

[OOC: Aelistae is moving to flank the wolf flanking Xaris. And then attacking it with her sword. That’s only one round of actions, but she’ll continue doing that until the critter is dead.]

Well I'm back, and I just posted a short post describing Aelistae's actions for the next 2 rounds.

How many werewolves are left for us to deal with?Is it just the dire one (that's been turned) and the big bad?

There was no time for lingering sorrow or regret. Elesia had been taken and there was no sign of Sheva – the woman who had joined them at Castle Tethyr. But Aelistae could not allow her thoughts to wander. Not while there were those that still needed her.

“I will not let you die,” she vowed to Bart, after channeling her Goddess’ power to repel the lycanthrope that had been attacking him, and a little extra to save his life.

[Swapping out ‘True Strike’ to cast Cure Light Wounds on Bart]

“Keep yourself safe,” she added to the human, as she moved to join the fray.

[Move action to where her sword is lying (somewhere by the big bad?) and a standard action to pick it up]

Here's hoping she hasn't disappeared for good.

I wonder though that, with the way things are going, what will 5th edition be like? Isn't it likely that they'll try to move away completely from any link to pen and paper roleplaying, and instead just launch an MMO?

For that reason I can't really be shrug my shoulders at those who play 4th edition. I see it as part of a worrying direction that will kill of the game.

And on that note, wouldn't it be awesome if someone reissued some of the (2nd edition) AD&D material? Since I would prefer to play that as opposed to 4th ed. rubbish. Plus my AD&D books are looking really tatty.

Nasty combat so far. When I read that Aelistae had rolled a critical miss, and had fallen down before the werewolf, I was certain she was going to die.

Now I'm just hoping she made her fortitude save when the wolf bit her, and she hasn't contracted lycanthropy.

Subject: Regret

Aelistae’s footing gave way beneath her. Her sword flew from her grasp. And she smelt the stale, fetid breath of the werewolf as it plunged its teeth into her flesh.

But it was not the end.

The world became impossibly bright, as if someone had brushed away the dust and grime that covered it and had polished every living surface. The grass became flushed with a verdant hue, the bark of trees lost their worried wrinkles, and the silvery light of the moon burned brighter than it ever had before.

Her eyes rose and found themselves locked onto a face that was beyond beautiful. It was framed by silvery white hair that streamed over velvet-black skin like liquid moonlight. Its features were proud and perfectly formed but were currently molded into a tender smile. The eyes that sat in the face shifted between hues of blue, as the moonlight reflected the tears contained therein.

Aelistae longed to be with that face. Longed to swim in those eyes and lose all her cares.

But it was not the end.

The face metamorphosed into that of Elesia. The world lost its brilliant hue. And Aelistae cried out, more out of a sense of loss than because of the pain she felt searing through her body.

One of her hands fell to her belt, and the pain began to subside even if the feeling of loss remained.

[ooc: Standard action to activate her belt of healing, and use all three charges to heal 4d8]

“I’m alive,” she croaked, as her eyes focused on Elesia. “What hap…?” she began to ask, until she noticed how different Elesia looked. She was still beautiful, but it was the frail beauty of the fae, and she stood now replete with shimmering wings.

“I…thank you for saving me,” the drow priestess mouthed sadly. “But I…we, need to go back. We can’t leave them.”

[ooc: It'll be a move action to get back to her feet, so I guess that's all her actions for this round.]
