Ah great. Sorry for not posting. I've was busy yesterday, and have been most of today.

But now I guess I'll just wait until you post before I do.

I'm fine with that Reralae. And it actually makes sense for Linnix to have found most of the stuff. She does have the highest search modifier after all. (or at least I think she does).

Well there's the journal Aelistae found, and the door back in the spider's lair that she saw. Can't think of anything else.

But until she'd have a reason to believe they can't exit the way they came in, I'm not sure she'd try to explore them.

DA I've noticed that we picked up a suit of banded mail a while ago. Since Artanis is still wearing studded leather, it could be very useful for her. It should be fairly easy adjusting the straps etc so that it would fit her (Aelistae has an armour maintenance kit that could do the job for instance).

Oh and we also left a treasure chest unclaimed when we first ventured into the complex. It might be an idea to grab that as we leave.

Subject: Getting patched up

Aelistae stared into the glazed eyes of the fallen sorceress. Her mind was full of questions that she had no answer to. Had the woman known that laying the ambush on behalf of her master would claim her life? Was she really evil at heart or had she been led down the wrong path? In another time or place could they have not have been friends…or at least have parted ways in peace?

Aelistae sighed, and raised a weary hand to rub at her forehead. She was tired, both mentally and physically. It had been too long a time without either Reverie or quiet communion with her Goddess to give order to her thoughts and calm her fears.

‘Eilistraee give me strength. And forgive me if I have strayed from the path you would have me follow.’

The drow priestess slowly wiped the blood from her sword with a rag from her backpack, and knelt to close the eyes of the woman they had killed.

Even though the sorceress had used the ogre and the orcs as lackeys, it appeared that the monstrous creatures had plundered a small fortune in their forays. Linnix and Xaris proved remarkably adept at finding the treasures they had secreted away, and soon revealed vast stores of gold and intricately carved items.

Aelistae was glad that their efforts had not been in vain, although as her eyes swept over the form of Kas she saw that their rewards had come at a cost. The strange-looking woman had already been brought back from death’s door once before that day, and she appeared to be knocking upon it once again.

“I’ll do what I can for her,” she replied to Loriel, after the elf asked her for her help, “but until I have time to commune with the Dark Maiden, all I can do is dress her wounds. Help me take off her armour.”

The drow priestess moved over to Kas’ side, and removed a small wooden box inlaid with a floral pattern from her backpack. Producing a small vial from within it, Aelistae liberally sprinkled it over a large wound in her midriff that been caused by the ogre’s large axe. Once the wound had been cleaned and her armour removed, she painstakingly sowed together Kas’ pale flesh with a needle and thread and bound the wound in a tight dressing.

“The stitching will tear if you move around too much. But it should last until I can ask Eilistraee to help you,” she informed Kas. “Lean on me and I’ll help you walk.”

“I think we should return to Elesia and Bart as soon as we can. If this was all an elaborate trap, then it’s likely that they are in trouble.”

OOC: Aelistae will make a heal check on Kas obviously. It won’t make any effect to her hp, but hopefully it’ll make Kas feel a little better in character.

Don't mean to be a killjoy, but...before you all divide the loot, let's actually wait until it's all identified.

Some of the items may be class specific, or nasty for people of a particular alignment etc. It's pointless to claim an item if it's going to be harmful for your character!

After that whoever can make use of an item can bid via the system that Kaelyn suggested we use. That way everyone can get something (even Loriel!).

I was surprised by Kas' decision to charge the woman. But good on you, DM, for sticking to what your character would do.

Subject: The Final Showdown (...I hope!)

“A trap,” Aelistae mouthed as she witnessed the woman she thought had been the ogre's captive reveal herself to be anything but. Her voice, however, rang hollow, and was little more than an empty whisper that matched the emptiness she felt within.

She had journeyed into the cave in the hope that she could help an innocent in need, and exorcise the ghosts of her past. Because she had believed that the humans of the surface possessed something that most of her people lacked: compassion for each other’s suffering.

But she had been wrong. Bart had shown her that even a kindly human had limits to the love he could show for those of his own race. And the woman who had prepared the elaborate ambush had shown Aelistae that humans could be as cunning and as heartless as the cruellest drow.

Aelistae felt a tear form in her eye, even as she dropped the bow she had been holding, and effortlessly drew the finely wrought blade she carried.

It was said among the Elistraeyn that a devotee’s mood could be assessed by the way she held her blade, and the way she moved with it in her hands. If that was true and Aelistae’s feelings were on display as she sprinted to engage the woman in combat, the only thing that could be seen was the sadness that she felt welling inside.

OOC: Aelistae is dropping her bow as a free action, drawing her sword as a free action, and charging the woman.

Subject: Foul Orcses!

The door swung open, and battle was joined. An ogre, bigger than any Aelistae had ever seen, stood in the middle of the room. It’s massive girth and height dwarfed that of a human woman who was chained and bound behind him and a pack of orcs that were arrayed before him.

“Not the ogre! Shoot the orcs! Bring them down!” Aelistae shouted as she saw Loriel fire arrows into the ogre’s hide.

Aelistae waited for those before her to give her room to fire an arrow of her own. But she sent it spiralling towards the right-most of the four orcs rather than their master.

OOC: Okies I’m assuming that Aelistae can’t fire her bow until the folk ahead of her give her a clear line-of-sight. So she’ll delay her action until after Artanis, Xaris and Kas, and then fire her bow.

Oh and given that the orcs are (probably) within 30’, I’ll take my point blank shot bonus here, please.

Aelistae’s hand trembled. Thin rivulets of blood ran down the sword she was holding, and pooled on the blue-black of her skin. Its end lay buried deep in the chest of an orc she had tracked down, and its ragged breathing signalled that its own end was near.

She knew what it was she had to do. She had to withdraw her blade, and end its wretched life with one swift stroke so that it could no longer torment the innocents that lived nearby.

And yet she could not. The orc’s eyes met hers, and he gurgled something in a tongue she did not understand. But then she did not have to. Aelistae saw in his eyes what he was asking of her: mercy.

A black-feathered arrow whistled past her ear, hit the orc in the forehead and ended the creature’s life in an instant. The orc slumped to the forest floor with its eyes wide open, still conveying their final, desperate plea.

“W…Why?” Her voice cracked as she asked the simple question.

“The orc killed a child in cold blood, Aelistae. There was no redemption there to be had.” A dark, ebony-hued hand fell onto her shoulder and squeezed it reassuringly. “‘Repay rudeness with kindness. Repay violence with swift violence, so that the fewest may be hurt and danger fast removed from the land.’…That is what the Lady asks of us. It is not an easy path to follow, Sister, but one we must stick to.”

Aelistae closed her eyes. She had heard the shuffling from behind the door, the plaintive wail, and then the harsh sound of the ogre hitting its captives. She knew what her Goddess would have her do.

“No mercy,” the drow priestess whispered as she opened her eyes, a quiet fury burning in her violet orbs.

OOC: Aelistae can’t do much more until either Artanis or Xaris, our resident super-gnome, open the door.

Bri, Loriel doesn't have the shield, so she can't 'use it to protect the woman'.

Even if she did without the Quick Draw feat it would be useless to you. (it's a move action to sheathe or draw a weapon).

I've used this system before and it works well. It leads to an equal distribution of items which is always good.

But, of course, there's not much point in doing this until we have the items identified.

I haven't been giving CD points on the basis of a character acting in accord with their background. I've been giving them simply for posts (or a series of posts) that I've enjoyed reading.

And there's loads of rp opportunities for Kas as memories trickle back to her (if you want to go down that route).

Aelistae bowed her head in thanks at the compliment Kas paid her.

“You could be right,” she replied, after the Tyrran had speculated that the statue was consecrated to some evil deity. “But if it was I think we would feel something. And, I at least, don’t feel anything here. It may be just what it is. An old statue of a forgotten people, that is slowly being eroded by the ravages of time.”

The drow priestess smiled wistfully. “Well I don’t think we’ll ever know. Come we should keep moving.”

Thanks for answering the queries I had Kaelyn.

The prestige class I was thinking of was (obviously) Sword Dancer of Eilistraee. But that's a long way in the future.

About the magical loot (or what we think is magical), we should probably wait until we have it all identified before splitting it up and before we start using it.

I remember once playing with a guy who started experimenting with a sword the party found. He would swing it around, shout random words that he thought might trigger a special effect...until he eventually stumbled across something that did trigger the sword's magic. The sword spat a fireball out and nearly killed him.

Aelistae peered into the darkened room. The statue of a horse-headed figure locked in mortal combat with a centaur caught her eye, even as Loriel moved to salvage the weapons worked into the piece of art.

“That’s not the first time we have seen an image of a man with a horse’s head here. But I have never seen or heard of any creature who looks like that. Perhaps this whole complex was a temple once, to some forgotten God?”

[OOC: Aelistae will try a Knowledge (Religion) check. I doubt it’ll reveal anything though]

Aelistae shrugged. She was not a scholar, and she knew that there were many mysteries out there that were beyond her power to solve.

“Be careful of the shield and the spear,” she cautioned Loriel as she returned with her prize. “It is not wise to wield items that may be magical, until we know if they are enchanted and what enchantments they might hold.”

Aelistae bit her lip as her eyes returned to focus on the darkness ahead. They had come seeking an ogre and his captives, but there had been little sign of either.

‘Where are you?’ she wondered.

Subject: Some queries

Now that we've picked up a fair bit of loot, I was just wondering how everyone wanted to split it? Aelistae, if I was in character, would look to split it 8 ways (6 shares for the PCs, and one share each for the NPC and the patron). But I'm not sure if everyone would agree with that.

We've also picked up some potions, and I was wondering whether, Kaelyn, you'd allow us to guess at their contents by taking a small sip? The only other way (I think) to identify potions is to cast the spell Identify. But it's a very expensive spell to cast on one low level potion.

Finally, would Aelistae be free to take a prestige class from Faiths and Pantheons (it's a 3.5 FR supplement)? It's a long way off yet before she could meet the requirements for a prestige class, but it's good to plan ahead.
