Well I put my first post up.

Apologies for copying Battlestar-style swearing. It seemed a lot better to use that than to just have the words censored out.

Subject: Tazi

Her eye stung. It felt heavy and swollen and when she forced it open the world was coloured in a red haze.

‘Was it always that colour?’ her addled mind wondered as her gaze fixed upon the crimson sky that hung heavily above her. There were no clouds there, but just the merciless, burning suns of Ophelia VII.

A sudden flash of pain made her wince, and she swivelled her one functional eye to regard its source. It was a large, ugly reptilian creature who was busily burying its snout in the broken flesh of her right arm. She tried to ward it away, but she could not. Her arms were impaled through the wrists to a large, timber frame, and the useless, flapping motion of her limbs as she tried to move them only caused the scabbed wounds to ooze dark, viscous blood.

“So she’s still alive then?” a voice heavy with age muttered behind her.

“Yes Canoness,” another replied, in a reverent tone.

“How long has it been?”

“Almost four and a half days.”

“And her crime?”

The other voice snorted in disgust. “It’s the usual, with this one. She was found sharing the bed of some hiveborn rat. We tried beating it out of her, but still she would not repent. So Sister Atrea suggested this, more novel punishment.”

“But still you cling to life. …What should I do with you?” the first of the two voices whispered thoughtfully.

“Do you know an Inquisitor has requested this one?” it added after a moment’s thought.

The other could barely contain her surprise. “Really? Her heart is pure, in a fight there are few better among those following Our Martyred Lady, but her mind…”

“It wanders,” the first finished. “Still where better to learn discipline than in the Black Ships? Have her cleaned and fed, but let the wounds scar. Perhaps then there will be men unwilling to let her clamber into their beds.”

“And the man, Canoness? The one she was caught with?”

“Burn him.”

Tazi shook her head, in an attempt to dispel the last cobwebs of the dream that had plagued her. It had been the same dream she always had – the blazing suns, her broken flesh, the voices – only she knew the troubling images were more than just a fantasy her mind had conjured. Her left hand absently rubbed at her right wrist. She could still see the scar, still feel the pain, even though she had purchased skin grafts months before.

“A wound upon my soul,” Tazi muttered darkly, as she stumbled to the mirror and washing basin that adorned her otherwise spartan room.

‘By the Saints, I look terrible,’ she thought. Her eye shadow had smudged in her sleep, leaving a large black stain beneath her emerald eyes, and her short, black hair was an unruly mess. The ordinarily honey tone to her skin was replaced with a greenish tint – a legacy of spending the night before looking at the world through a bottle. If her make-up had been fixed, she had drunk less, and her hair was longer, she knew she would compare favourably to the pampered daughters of high society. But as it was she just looked like a hard-bitten member of the Adepta Sororitas – more commonly known as the Sisters of Battle.

‘Not that it matters much,’ she added glumly. ‘There’s no one to frack on this rust-bucket anyway.’

“Incoming transmission from Inquisitor Carrigan,” a computerized voice suddenly bellowed. “Beginning transmission: “Piscivorus! Get in here!”

A cruel smile formed over her lips, as she filled the basin with water and began to wash her face. ‘I wonder what poor fracker she chose for that job.’

It was several minutes later before she found the hand-written note in her mailbox, stipulating it was she that chosen for that dubious ‘honour’.

The swearing could be heard from as far away as the engine room.

---

Tazi walked or rather clumped down the hallway. She was clad in tightly-fitting plate that was died an ebony black colour, and wore over the top a long tabard of red cloth embroidered with the sayings of a long-forgotten Saint. She had washed quickly, and had made a cursory effort to sweep her hair back from her face to reveal an intricate tattoo of three crystalline tears below her right eye.

She was of the Order of Our Martyred Lady, the oldest of the Orders Militant in the Adepta Sororitas, and in her armour she looked the part. Each step she took down the ship's cavernous corridors were accompanied by the frightened whispers and scurrying footfalls of the ship’s crew as they parted to let her pass.

She came to a sudden stop before a large black door - or more particularly a door that was an even darker shade of black than the rest of the ship - knocked once and entered.

“Apologies Mistress. I only received your communiqué a few moments ago.”

Basically the PHB just appropriated the gods from the Greyhawk setting (Heironeous, Hextor et al).

I'd give you a list of FR deities but there's so many it'd make your eyes bleed. I've always liked that about FR though.

Well I apologize for dropping out at any rate. And I really don't blame you Eol, we all know that you were busy and had to prioritize real life (*gasp* 'real life' is there such a thing?).

It would be a shame not to continue, though, if only for the folk that have put in a lot of work and written some great stuff when everyone else has been quiet.

Yes it was a lovely post Xaris.

The only thing is that Ehlonna isn't a deity in FR sadly. You could use Mielikki or Silvanus I suppose as a replacement in future. Or then there's Baervan Wildwanderer who is the patron deity of forest gnomes (he's a NG god).

Talking about where everyone went...I was thinking of quietly retiring from the Trek game. The reason is that if this does start again (and so does Olan's SW game) I really wouldn't have the time really to post as I'd like.

It's been ages since Vaela has done anything, so I don't think she'd be too missed as it is.

Subject: Sitting in the courtyard

A thoughtful smile curled at the edges of Aelistae’s dark-red lips, as she sat in a quiet corner of the courtyard. She was not dressed in the form-fitting leathers she had worn on the road or the fine mithril armour she had recently bought, but rather an exotic-looking dress. Or rather what appeared to a dress. The sleeveless garment was made of a cloth so impossibly fine it was only the silvery embroidery upon it that saved her modesty, and the bottom half of it was cut so that the midnight black of her smooth legs were largely uncovered. In her hands she cradled the unsheathed blade of her sword, and her fingers absently trailed over the inscription that adorned it – ‘Tangis'wun Oloth gaer zhah Ssussun.’*

Her violet eyes, however, were fixed upon Elesia, and her head nodded in time to the sweet song she sung. It had stilled the hubbub that had reigned before, and everyone it seemed was caught in its spell.

“My heart you shall keep,” Aelistae murmured in an echo of the song’s final words as it came to a close. Her thoughts drifted to Nash, and the short while she had spent with him two nights before. He had declared his love for her and had bound his soul to her own. She found the thought of it and all that it meant terrifying. Or she had done, until Elesia’s song.

‘Maybe this was Her plan for me all along? To come here and know what it is to love and be loved.’

Aelistae shook her head, causing her long, unbound hair to spill over one shoulder. She had no answer, and did not even know whether Nash had meant what he had said or whether he had merely been caught in the throes of his passion.

A murmur in the crowd caught her attention, and her eyes lifted to see Elesia ask Bart to dance with her. The smile she had sported earlier returned, as she swept her thoughts and doubts aside and watched them dance.

Maybe so, but I don't recall other popular tabletop games having a major revision every 5 years.

You can take chess, poker or Risk by way of example.

Although admittedly some revisions of chess could be funny...

'Queen takes Pawn g4.'
'Nuh-uh.'
'What do you mean nuh-uh?'
'You mean you didn't read the new FAQ? Man you really are out of the loop...''

Ah that's a good point.

I've spent most of my remaining gold on getting the mithril shirt enchanted. But I do have a few hundred gold left (in both coin and gems).

If Xaris wishes I could compensate him for the wand that way.

Aelistae smiled wistfully at Miriam’s reaction to seeing her face. “I wish I could say that everyone who looked upon my face had your good heart, Miriam. The message of the Dark Lady it seems is not easy to hear for either drow or non-drow.”

“And please, do not bow to me. It is I who should be doing so to you.”

The drow priestess punctuated her words with a graceful bob of her head at the young woman.

If Aelistae’s was surprised at Miriam’s first reaction to her, however, it was as nothing to the moment when it came to paying for her purchase.

“Twelve-forty?” she echoed when the shop attendant revealed a price far below than what she originally quoted. “That’s…well it’s more than reasonable,” she added as she counted out the requisite gold.

Aelistae smiled as she picked up the box in which her armour had been stowed. It amazed her how light it all was, especially when compared to the light chain coat she currently wore. When Miriam mentioned her father’s expertise, however, it gave Aelistae a further idea.

‘What if I had this enchanted?’

Thanks Kaelyn.

Unless anyone else would like it, I suppose I better bid on the wand of cure light wounds that Xaris discovered. What would be the median price for it? (given that it only has 28 charges).

And I don't suppose Aelistae can find and buy a masterwork set of panpipes?

“I…” Aelistae stuttered and glanced at Miriam. Part of her wished she had used the scroll they had stumbled upon two days before and altered her appearance. And the other wondered if that would not run counter to her goal of proving that not all drow had blackened hearts.

“I would like that, but please do not be startled by my appearance. I mean you no ill will.”

Aelistae slowly pulled back her hood, and revealed to the woman her heritage. She was glad, all of a sudden, that Linnix and Loriel were with her in case things did not go as she would have wished it.

Okies regarding Aelistae's share of the money.

She'll give up 600 gp, so she can fully buy out the ring of protection. She'll purchase a mithril shirt (and hopefully be able to give up her existing armour in part exchange). And finally she'll try to find an apothecary where she can buy 2 doses of antitoxin, and a potion of Cure Light Wounds.

After all that's done she'll transfer the dress she is currently carrying, place it in the extra backpack she picked up, and stow it on Linnix's cart when the journey resumes. (unless Linnix objects). That should mean that her encumbrance falls to a light load.

If anyone wants to join Aelistae on her shopping trip, feel free to do so. She'd feel safer travelling in a group.

Aelistae circled the edge of the marketplace, but it was not because she was afraid of others recoiling in fear or horror at the fact that she was drow. The sun had past its zenith and with leather gloves covering her hands and a cloak hiding her features, she was confident the colour of her skin would not be seen. It was because the market square was so full it would have been impossible for her to push her way through the crowd even had she wished to.

Hawkers, beggars, merchants, the rick, the poor – all of humanity it seemed had gathered in one small location. Some were dark-skinned, others as fair as snow. Some wore elaborate headdresses and others barely wore anything at all.

“Goddess,” Aelistae murmured, at the sight of all those people.

“Rat skins!” one enterprising peddlar near her yelled. “Get yer rat skins ‘ere! Buy one and I’ll throw in the rest of the rat for free!”

“‘Ere you. You wants a rat?” the peddlar continued as he spied Aelistae. “They makes good eating too if you cook ‘em enough. And failing that you can just throws ‘em at people.”

“Umm, I was looking for some armour or weapons actually.”

“Oh, then you probably wants a shop down there. It’s called Duncan’s Smithy. But you know why do you needs all this snooty sword stuff when you can get a rat for a fraction of the price!”

“Uhuh…” Aelistae mumbled, deciding it best that she move on.

---

Despite the peddlar’s unsettling mannerisms, he proved to be right both about the location of the shop and that it was the place to go to. The weapons and armour of display were beautifully made, and some of the items there would not have been out of place in the armoury of the Promenade.

“Mithril,” Aelistae commented, entranced by one suit of tightly pressed armour that was as light as a feather.

“How much is this?” she inquired, hoping there was a vendor hiding nearby.

On another note, is there any chance a (non-magical) mithril chain shirt would be available? (since that's something Aelistae could afford).

Failing that, any magical chain shirts would be good too.

Aelistae laughed a soft, musical laugh as the diminutive Xaris gleefully accepted his winnings, and Linnix ran over comically and almost destroyed the small game in her eagerness to play.

‘It is good to laugh again,’ she mused, as she tried and failed to remember the last time she had done so so openly.

“You do know, that all winners have to buy a round of drinks for everyone?” she added with a wink at Xaris and Linnix.

Well that is funky! Since that wand is a wand of clw that saves Aelistae the bother of trying to track one down.

For the sword 10k is about right for what it's worth. It doesn't matter, though. It's way out of Aelistae's price range.

Well the justification for 3rd edition was that there were so many (obscure) rulebooks out there, that AD&D had become quite arcane and unwieldy. At the time I agreed. 3rd ed. seemed like a natural continuation of the Skills and Powers book and Combat and Tactics, both of which I liked.

But now they're using the same justification for 4th edition. If it is the case that there are too many books out there, and that they're not of a very high quality, then why did they release them in the first place? And are they trying to say that their customers are mugs for buying them at all?

More to the point, do we honestly believe that there will not be a whole series of more splat books in the future?

And I agree absolutely with what you're saying about adventures Almerin. The day of creating really good adventures as supplements has died. The last one I was actually motivated into buying was War of the Spider Queen and that was 5 years ago (and I think it could have been improved in places).
