If you view charisma in those terms (which is fine), then I still don't see why the average orc has more charisma than the average human (or whatever other race you wish to bring up).

But as I said I'm happy to just agree to disagree. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences and 4th edition isn't agreeable to many people (some of whom hang around on rdinn).

I'm not going to get involved in deciding whether a particular comment is right or wrong, but frankly I tend to agree with the general sentiments expressed by Bri and Suicidolt.

Having said that...

I never objected to the changes in 3rd edition, even though I had been playing AD&D. As I saw it (at the time) 3rd edition was a logical progression of what had appeared in 'Skills and Powers' and 'Combat and Tactics', and I liked the fact that a character could be customized to reflect the vision of how one wanted them to be. 4th edition is not a logical progression of what has gone before (for the reasons I've cited before).

Secondly, to claim that charisma never represented appearance is incorrect. It never just represented how physically attractive a character was, but I doubt anyone's vision of orcs is of them having magnetic personalities.

Finally, 3.5 rangers are actually pretty funky, and are certainly funkier than their 3rd ed. counterparts. The class that really suffered in 3rd edition was Bard...and they've disappeared entirely in 4th edition it seems.

Anyway, as I posted a while ago, each to their own. If you enjoy 4th edition, all power to you. But I'll stick with 3.5 and Pathfinder.

Kaelyn hasn't finished his update for the larger of the two parties yet, so I'm sure he'll work on the one for Zorana and Silvara after he's done.

It's quite a fun site. Not as good as playing Risk the old-fashioned way though.

And of course I've made silly mistakes where I've pressed the 'attack' button when I wanted to press the 'end attack'...

Of course if we do camp we could end up waking up to find all our belongings stolen by a certain bandaged halfling...

Well strictly speaking Bart's the one in charge, so whether we camp or not would be down to him.

Hmm, I don't think Bart would want to head down into the catacombs beneath the monastery either. Especially since we must be fairly close to the keep that is our objective.

Incidentally, Kaelyn, how far are we now from the keep?

“The potions made by a priestess channelling the power of her Goddess. Precisely how it works, or if it has worked, is something you’d have to ask a higher power…or a lower one,” Aelistae replied daskly to Linnix and Talus, as she tugged on the leather glove she wore upon her right hand.

“Sorry,” she added shortly afterwards with a shake of her head. “I…just have a lot on my mind.”

“I’d be happy to try and re-size of my old armour for you Xaris. When we make camp, I’ll spend some time on it.”

Just posted a brief description of how Aelistae is going to divide the potions and scrolls. She'll give Linnix, Talus and Xaris a potion, and use the scrolls on Artanis and herself.

It'll mean that there's a small chance that Aelistae and Artanis will not be cured of the curse. Sorry for putting Artanis at risk like that, but I had to choose someone (other than Aelistae) who would have to go for the riskier route.

A smile would have tugged at the corner of her lips at seeing the antics of Firin, if Aelistae had been in a lighter mood. The small merchant had a boundless enthusiasm that ordinarily would have appealed to her. But the battle with the werewolves, the death of Sheva, and then the news she had received of Nash, chased any smile she might have worn away.

“Here,” Aelistae said quietly, as she handed out the three potions she had procured from Firin to Linnix, Talus and Xaris. “Drink it. It’ll stave off any curse passed on to you by the ze-illrin.”

“Artanis and I will…well we’ll use these,” she added, pulling out the two scrolls she had also purchased.

I had Aelistae take the liberty of buying 3 potions of remove disease and 2 scrolls. The total came to 2700gp, which I figured could be taken from the 4200 the party earned by selling loot.

Aelistae only needs a 3 or more on a d20 check to successfully cast the spell from the scroll, so none of us will be howling at the moon bar a couple of really bad dice rolls.

Subject: Finding a purpose

“You want to be rid of me?”

The words were more of an accusation than a question, but the women that they were sounded towards did not seem to notice. She merely continued the fluid movements of the sword in her hand until the silver of the blade, the silvery locks of her hair and the glistening contours of her body became one. The graceful dance continued until all her breath was spent and her body could take no more.

“And what makes you think that, my Sister?” she replied at last in a breathless whisper.

“You would send me away from those I know, those that have become my family…to live among the rivven….”

“And would that be so bad?” the woman interrupted, casting her dark eyes accusingly at the source of the voice.

“I…no…no, it wouldn’t. And if the humans would accept our kind, I would gladly live among them. But they fear us Qilué and would likely kill us out of blind panic. Why do you send me among them?”

“Because there’s nothing more for you to learn here. It has been fifteen Aeloulaeva since you joined us Aelistae; fifteen since you took the Sword Oath and embraced Eilistraee. But to fully embrace your future it is not enough to know the Lady’s message, but to see why it must be so. To see the Surface World in all its glory, to witness the everyday kindnesses of those that live upon it, and to feel love in your heart.”

The woman’s hand fell upon the other’s shoulder and squeezed it softly. “Do you understand?”

“I love him,” she confessed in a whisper, as Firin finished his tale. In that moment it did not matter to her if the merchant heard the words she had quietly spoken. She felt the love she held for Nash so keenly that it pained her. And it was by giving voice to what was in her heart that the feeling began to ebb.

“…Thank you,” she added to Firin, after clearing her throat.

She walked over to where she had left Daisy, and slowly petted the white mare’s neck. Her thoughts, however, were elsewhere.

’I will find this mirror,’ she vowed, ’And I free him from this demon. I just…I just hope I have my friends with me.”

[OOC: An 'Aeloulaeva; is an elvish measurement of time that correlates with 4 years.]

Aelistae’s hands fell to a pouch by her belt, and withdrew the gold and platinum coins that were contained therein.

“I’ll pay your price,” she communicated, handing over half of the total amount to Firin. “Tell me what I would know.”

Firin’s thoughts echoed in Aelistae’s mind, but the crystalline clarity of his thoughts did not make her own any more clear – even to herself.

“I don’t know exactly what it is I want. How he became this way? What is it that possesses his body? How do I fight it, and free him from its control? All those are thing I want to know, and yet…I’m not sure the answers will fill me with any joy.”

“I’m sorry,” she added with a shake of her head, “I don’t think I’m making much sense. If there’s anything you can tell me about him, or how I might save him, I…I’d be willing to pay anything.”

Subject: Buying salvation for her body and her heart

A warm smile broke through Aelistae’s guarded exterior, as Firin first rattled off the various potions, scrolls and curative salves that he possessed, before showing her his wares.

“Falduna l'Jallil,”* she half-sang and half spoke as she easily picked out the 3 potions and 2 pieces of parchment that would ward off the curse. “May the Moon smile upon you, friend,” she added with a pat of the merchant’s hand.

“Now let’s arrange a price for these…”

---

In the end the potions and scrolls were not the only thing Aelistae haggled over. Firin, it seemed, had a wealth of trinkets, weapons, and more mundane items crammed into a host of magical (or what seemed to be magical) bags. Some Aelistae recognized, and others…others were so exotic and strange to her eyes that she had to wonder where the small merchant had obtained them. The one thing that caught her was a small, dun and ecru diamond that fitted neatly into a small depression in her armour above her chest.

“Can I speak to you in private?” Aelistae inquired, after Firin had just completed his latest transaction with her companions. “I want…I need to buy information if you have it. Is there anything you know about a man called Nash Lambert? Some call him the Cardinal…”

The drow priestesses voice trailed off. She did not know what to do with the memories she had of Nash – to cradle them as treasured moments or bury them as harbingers of pain and loss. But before she could do either, she had to know what it was that had taken him from her.

[*“Praise the Lady.”]

Aelistae nodded as Dylan spoke, even though her understanding of the speech of humans did not stretch so far that she understood fully all the words that he had used.

“I have never met a human or…” Aelistae shook her head and left the thought unsaid. “What I mean to say is I would be honoured if you could teach me some of the songs you know. I have never learnt anything of how the edain sing.”*

[*Edain=Elvish for humans. Aelistae is using the elvish here since the (Underdark) drow for humans is a little too rude. ]
