And I just had a look. There's quite a good wiki page on the SAS. Nothing about training there though.

I don't think anyone except ex-SAS people would know what their training is like. The names of those serving in it, it's precise number, and the theatre it's serving in is all kept under wraps (much like Delta Force).

You could always do a google search. There's bound to be some military-type who's written something about it.

SAS is 'Special Air Service' rather than services...and yes they are uber-hard. From what I know Delta Force was based on the SAS, in as much as it is largely black ops and inter-service to boot.

There's also a SBS in Blighty, which is 'Special Boat Service'. For some reason I always think of them as 5 year old kids sitting in a bath playing with rubber duckies...it might be because they never do anything.

Ok I have a feeling that Dwibius/Intella is suggesting that we cross the bridge leading into the keep.

That is not a good idea! The keep is bound to be occupied by gobbos, and the bridge leading into the keep I would expect to be heavily guarded.

I would much rather go around the keep in a sweep of the camps - even if that takes a while.

Yeah I'm a bit confused by that too...which is a little strange because it made perfect sense when I looked at it after having a drink (or four).

I think Dwibius' plan is fine. I might not be able to get in a post saying as much, so I thought I'd say so here.

Nah...it'd be much more fun to shoot the paladin. Paladin-on-a-stick anyone? It's a drow delicacy!

Even if our characters can't get to the site of where the horn was blown quickly (which I'm not sure they'd know) taking a recon. around the area could be useful. And we could also attack any camps we walk near to.

“I don’t think that will work,” Aelistae replied to Artanis with a slight shake of her head. “The bridge at the keep is likely to be guarded, and even if it wasn’t it would take us some time to dismantle it. Also I don’t think that the goblins and orcs are after us. It seems something less subtle than us is attacking them this night.”

“I may be best for us to take our horses,” she added after reflecting on Dylan’s suggestion. “But I would prefer to go on foot. Even if we run, we’ll make less noise than a horse walking.”

I changed Aelistae's plan because I heard from Chris that it would be really tough to destroy the bridge. The other thing mitigating against that idea now is the horn, which probably is going to result in all the gobbos heading towards Atharam.

Finally Aelistae is actually pretty nifty in melee combat...just thought I'd point it out.

"You didn't hear it?" Aelistae inquired, looking around at her companions. The blank stares told her they hadn't - except for Intella.

"Well it's good to know I wasn't imagining it," she added with a nod as she looked at the halfling. "But I don't think Linnix and Xaris should go alone. We should go together. The sound was quite distant, and it would take too long for you two to scout all that distance."

Aelistae craned her head. The wind brought the sounds of drums beating in the distance, and whispers of something more. She could make out the feint sound of a horn blaring above the bass of the drums. It did not sound like any instruments the Elistraeyn used. There was no tone or pitch to the horn but just a crude, wailing cacophony.

“Did you hear that? …That horn? I think the orcs and goblins have found some other prey.”

Aeliste hitched over her bow over her shoulder. “We can’t wait here any longer. We should go if only investigate what that sound was.”

Kaelyn told me that we won't be able to take the bridge down easily, so Aelistae's plan isn't so good.

Time for Plan C!

Time was dragging on, and the more it did, the more uncertain Aelistae became about her original proposal.

“I don’t know what a ‘dire tiger’ is,” she replied to Dylan, “but if you’re thinking of trying to confuse or scare the goblins, I’m not sure it’ll work. The force we’d be facing might be four or five times the size we just fought, and few goblins would feel fear with those kind of numbers on their side.”

“I’m thinking…I’m thinking that we could take the fight to them. Why not hit the goblins and orcs while they’re still gathering their strength and breaking camp before they cross the river? That way we can hit them in small groups, instead of in one big horde.”

Aelistae bit down upon her bottom lip as she digested the observation Artanis had made.

‘She’s right. If half of the forces from each camp are sent to track us down, they’ll have more than enough to come across both bridges and encircle us. And then….’

The drow woman shook her head, releasing a few strands of silvery hair from the braid she had used to tie it back. “I think the only thing we can do is to destroy the bridge we just went across, and seek to ambush them on the bridge near the keep. That way we can keep their numbers to a manageable level. But if we are going to act we must do so now. Before they discover our location.”

A soft nicker from Daisy greeted Aelistae as she and her companions returned to their camp. But if the drow woman heard it, she did not react. Her mind was elsewhere, thinking over all those needless deaths that had stalked every step of their journey.

‘I just hope it is worth it. That when all of this is done, some good will come with the humans’ return here.’

Aelistae placed her bow and sword among her belongings, before returning to the others with a thin wand in her hand. It turned out that there was little need for it. Dylan’s wounds had largely been healed, as had the worst of those of the halfling woman had sustained.

“Do not be afraid to retreat next time,” she whispered to Dylan after singing a quick song of healing to close the last of his wounds. “Nindyn vel’uss kyorl nind ratha thalra elyhinn dal til alust – Those who spend too long watching their backs meet death from the front.”

[OOC: Feel free to reply if you wish. Aelistae isn’t really criticizing Dylan…well she might think he’s a rubbish swordsman but that’s about it. ]

“I’m Aelistae D’Vrann,” she said shortly afterwards with a nod to the halfling woman. She managed with forced cheer to conjure a brief smile, but she soon abandoned the effort. She no longer felt like smiling or laughing when the bloodshed in the coming hours threatened to dwarf all that had gone before. “Let me see what I can do to tend to…”

The sudden thrum of heavy drums reverberated through the air. Aelistae stopped abruptly, before craning her neck and picking out the sound of one, two and then half a dozen or more wardrums. The drow priestess quickly healed the last of the halfling’s wounds and ran to fetch her bow and sword.

“It seems our work tonight is not yet done. We should fight them at the bridge. Their numbers will mean nothing if they can’t swarm over us. And if things go badly, we can always collapse it.”

“You’re welcome to come with us, Sister,” she added with a glance at the halfling. “But it’s dangerous work, and I do not want to risk your life.”

I presume we're all agreed on heading back to our camp?

If so Aelistae will heal everyone up when we get there, primarily by using her healing sticks (wands of clw) and the odd 0 level spell.

Time seemed to slow as the half-orc boy began to shout and turned to flee. But even so Aelistae found that she did not have enough time. All she could do was watch as Linnix first raised her bow and then drilled and arrow into the back of the half-orc child.

Aelistae’s eyes fell. She did not want to look at the body of the boy whom she had hoped could be saved, but had chosen instead to remain among the orcs and goblins who had caused so much pain to others.

“You…did the right thing,” the drow woman managed to say at last to Linnix.. “Dylan is right we should go. There is nothing more we can learn here, and nothing more we can do.”

‘I just wish things could have been different,’ a voice within her head added, as she and her comrades strode back into the night.

Sorry for choosing to ignore Artanis (and Talus too). It seemed odd to me that Aelistae would turn her back on the boy after just stepping through.

But yeah, anyway, sorry.

“It’s sad isn’t it? The things our people have done…the things our people still do.”

The young, girl flinched as if she had been struck. Her gaze had been fixed upon the thin, gaunt face and the empty, lidless eyes that had haunted her for tenday after tenday. But it was not the face that caused her to flinch. It was the words.

She stole a glance at the tall woman who had crept to her side. Her ebony skin glistened in the moonlight, bathing her skin in a silvery halo.

“It was necessary,” she found herself saying, “she could have been a spy. Haven’t the faeries always persecuted us? Don’t they butcher our kind without remorse?”

The woman smiled, as if responding to a joke that only she was privy to. “And yet you saved her. You found that broken woman and came here. Do you even know why?”

She didn’t.

“P'wal Usstan broue ilta,” Aelistae responded at last as she gazed upon the sad sight of the bound, half-orc child. His starved frame banged futilely at the drums, even as his face betrayed his fear and confusion.

Her sword slipped into its sheath, almost of its own volition, as she stepped forward and reached out a hand to the boy. The other reached into a pouch by her belt and produced a few pieces of dried fruit she had saved from her last meal.

’Take the hand,’ she willed, ‘choose a better life.’

Artanis tugged at her cloak and she could feel the disdain with which Talus looked upon the half-orcish child. But Aelistae chose to ignore both, until the boy had made his decision.

[OOC: The drow translates as “Because I pitied her.”]

Regarding the cloak, we should should wait to see if it's magical before deciding who it's best suited for. Also since people have very nearly killed themselves before by playing with unidentified items, I think we should play safe this time.

(...although I do recall Aelistae warning everyone back then too )

I'll post later today when I have a little more time.
