Topic: Faulty Xbox (again)
Subject: ...

Thanks for the comment. It seems I can get a new one for only £60 (around $100) more than what it would cost to repair this one. So I think it's probably worth it.

I am pretty mad at Microsoft though. And pretty irritated that I'll be handing over more cash to them.

I have, and have had, an Xbox 360 for a few years now. Unfortunately it is, as all original 360s were, a really unreliable piece of kit, and it has now broken down (again).

Since my warranty has expired, getting it repaired is going to be quite expensive, and probably only marginally cheaper than buying a new one. Does anyone have a newer version of the 360, and it is more reliable than the old?

Subject: Strange acquaintances

Switch, Ara soon realized, was one strange droid. All but the simplest automaton developed quirks if left unattended: a stutter when speaking, a reticence before performing a basic task. And any gear-head knew that to be the algorithms in the personality matrix re-writing themselves. But it was only in a handful of droids that those personality quirks were allowed to develop to their full extent.

‘No wonder he hides himself away. The Empire would order a memory wipe as soon as they saw him,’ Ara mused as her pale eyes roved over the customised ebony coverings on the droid.

“Corellian spiced ale, if you have it,” she replied after Switch offered them all a drink and a seat. Ara perched herself on the small crate that was quickly shuffled before the droid’s large desk, her eyes still drinking in the sight and mannerisms of the strange droid that had greeted them.

“Her name is Maya,” she added shortly after Ithiria had spoken, in case Switch misunderstood.

When did Gammorreans get so greedy? We need to have a word with their union or something...

'Great. I've come across the only Gammorreans in the Galaxy that can count past ten,' Ara huffed silently, as she poured a heap of creds into the mitts of the Gammorrean that had addressed her.

"Don't suppose either of you two can contribute thirty?" she added to her companions after she had emptied her pockets of all except the money Maya had given them.

Ara shrugged, "Because obviously if we were planning on killing your Boss we'd have brought some Gammorean muscle with us."

"Now," she added, after thrusting her hands in her pockets, "I've got 100 creds with me. I could 'accidentally' drop it into your paws, and you could decide to take that break and get royally drunk."

Since Ara is 'force sensitive' (without having any real awareness of that fact), I figure that she would have heard Ithiria's brief contact as a shout rather than a whisper. Hence the post.

And, if in doubt, bribe the pigs!

It started as a whisper on the edge of her consciousness. But it did not stay that way. Words she couldn’t quite make out grew deeper and stronger in intensity, crowded out all other thoughts, until all she could hear was: ‘Be ready.’

“Ah! No need to shout!” Ara murmured to Ithiria. The tall, pale woman shook her head trying to will away the throbbing pain in her head the words had caused.

“Look, your ‘Bossman’ said you shouldn’t let us in, but we need to get in,” Ara added to the Gammoreans when it seemed Ithi’s original plan had failed. “So how about we pay you to ‘take a break’. That way you haven’t seen us enter, we get in, and you get some creds. Deal?”

I'm hoping we can get past this without combat, in which case I'm ok without a map. But is Ara's plan feasible?

And thanks for the heads up regading your trip. It fits in quite well with one that I'll be taking too between the 2nd and 7th.

Subject: "Stormtroopers hitting on me?...Like, eww."

“Not long. Flew in from Tanaab a week ago. More work here for a…,” Ara paused mid-reply. The burly Stormtrooper’s eyes were fixed several inches below her throat, and it was not because her unadorned, sleeveless blouse was especially alluring.

“Hmmm. Really…nice,” he muttered, even as Ara took a nervous step back, her pale cheeks flushing a deep blue. Thankfully the lift chose that moment to shudder to a sudden stop. “I’m getting off now,” the armoured man purred, “I’d like to get off later too, you know what I’m saying. Shift ends in about two hours. Why do you meet us down at Moise’s when you finish up? Sound good?”

“Uhh…yeah, sure…” Ara mouthed unconvincingly. But the words seemed to do. The Stormtrooper threw a last, fond wink, and Ara was left to thump the back of her head against the wall of the elevator.

‘What was I thinking? I might as well piss on the grave of Dil and be done with it. Idiot!’

The code for ‘Deck N14’ was punched in, the lift shuddered back into life, and Ara, for the next few minutes, tried to avoid the gaze of her companions.

-----

“I was hoping Maya would be wrong about the Piggies,” Ara breathed quietly after Mars relayed what he had seen further down the decrepit corridor. Although between the hiss of venting gas, the twisted and scarred metallic walls, and the failing internal atmosphere, Ara knew that it was unsurprising ‘Switch’ couldn’t afford better mercs.

“We could try and bluff our way past them. Or I could search and disable an exhaust vent that we could slip through, and out into the docking bay. It shouldn’t be too hard to do.”

“Deck N15,” Ara replied, hoping that it, unlike their true destination, was still open to non-Imperial personnel. “Reported leak of Cyanoxis D-587. It’s the stuff that fracks up droid sensors and ocular implants.”

‘Now let’s just hope these berks get off before we get to N14,’ Ara thought as she stood in the lift and returned the stormtroopers’ smile.

Ara’s eyes drifted upwards, tracing the lazy descent of the elevator. ‘9, 8, 7, 6…’ she breathed, watching each yellow light flash on and then off, trying hard to repress the nervousness she felt at standing our in the open after the fire-fight earlier that morning. ‘Come on,’ she willed, thrusting a hand into an empty pocket, in case it reached for the easy comfort of another cigarra.

When the elevator did arrive with a loud ‘bing!’, however, she immediately wished it hadn’t.

Ara found herself staring into the faceless mask of a stormtrooper. It was the only the presence of her finger-nails digging into the flesh of her thigh that prevented her from twitching in alarm, or fleeing from the scene as fast as she could. ’Just a couple of grunts,’ she reasoned behind her goggles, they don’t know who you are.’

“So…uhh, you guys going down?” Ara inquired, with a half-step into the elevator.

By calling them a myth, Ara's position was doubting their ability to perform all the 'magic' associated with their belief in the Force. I figure that would be the Imperial line too.

Looking forward to the update.

Ara took a sharp draw of her cigarra, startled by the sudden outburst from Mars. It was the first time she had seen a chink in his icy demeanour.

“Maybe not,” she replied, after Mars had finished his angry pacing across the room, “but if they were real they weren’t the people they made themselves out to be. There’s a lot of frack on Arkania, and no Jedi ever came to help there.”

Ara shrugged, and lent over to put out her cigarra on a durasteel table. “Not that it matters. They’re either all dead, never existed, or don't care enough to help us now.”

I figure that Ara has a pair of goggles that she'll slip on, alongside a boiler-suit/maintenance uniform thing.

Other than that she'll take a couple of medpacs (since she currently has none), and will disassemble her blaster carbine so she can hide it on her person and slip it past security. (I'm trusting that Ara has enough mechanics skill to do that fairly easily).

‘She sounds like a Jedi.’

Ara pondered over the revelation for a full twelve seconds, rolling her cigarra between her fingers slowly as she did so. When the seconds were up she spluttered into a sudden laugh.

“’Other ways to communicate other than a comlink’? You sound like one of those Jedi in the Alexis Cov-Prim holovids. Next you’ll be waving your hands and having Mars believe he’s a bantha, or rushing off to Coruscant to confront the Emperor in a duel!”

Ara flashed a pearly smile in the direction of Ithiria from within the pall of smoke that surrounded where she sat. “Of course those Jedi were merely a myth.”

Ara shook her head still amused by the notion that Ithiria was one of the near-mythical Jedi Order. “I think the idea of a disguise is a good one, though. We could disguise you two as tech-heads with all the odds and ends Maya has here, and disguise our faces behind goggles or a welding mask.”

I'll put a post up either today or tomorrow. The mechanic idea is what Ara will go for, since it isn't that hard for her to pretend to be a tech-head.

Well the obvious thing to do would be to disguise ourselves as maintenance men/women, and bluff our way through to the docking bay.

Thoughts?
