Subject: Some assumptions

I'm assuming that it's alright to assume that Aelistae would still have her mithril shirt on?

I figure that the weight of it is so little that she would, until it had been decided who was going to keep watch and when. But if you deem that she wouldn't have it on, that's ok.

Subject: Bumps in the night...

“Vith!” Aelistae exclaimed angrily as she slipped off of Daisy’s back. Her rear felt so numb she would have fallen in an undignified heap if she hadn’t grasped the horse’s saddle to steady herself at the last possible moment. But, as the white mare craned her head and nuzzled her sympathetically, the drow woman found that she could not stay angry for long.

"Evagna ussa,” Aelistae uttered softly. “Ka dos zhahen naut ji dosman, Usstan talinth satiir feir taga Usstan xun nin."

Daisy nickered as if she understood, and, after life returned to her limbs, Aelistae left her to unpack for the night.

It did not take long. Aelistae was no vain Matron Mother, and the few possessions that she did carry could be effortlessly unpacked from her small backpack. She soon found herself nibbling on a sausage that Bart had prepared and staring into the flames of the fire that he had kindled.

‘Strange that it can appear so beautiful,’ she thought as she stared at the flames that licked at the night sky, and found her mind wandering back to the burnt-out building in which Kas and Loriel had perished, and the fiery hell into which Nash had disappeared. 'I wonder if they were in pain…if he’s in pain,' a voice within her head added, tears welling in her eyes.

A series of howls suddenly rent the quiet stillness of the night air. And the tears were just as quickly willed away. She was drow, and she was a Darksong Knight. She refused to allow her emotions to paralyze her into inaction.

Aelistae scampered the few steps to where she had left her sword, and scanned the shadows around the camp.

“Stay close to the fire!,” she shouted to the others. “The fire and our presence should scare them, unless…” Aelistae’s eyes drifted to the night sky and the full moon that was cradled within it. All Eilistraeyn’s knew that it was not just the Dark Maiden that claimed sovereignty over the moon. “Stay close to the fire, and do not let the creatures bite you if you can help it!”

Aelistae fell into the soft cadences of a spell, as she drew her sword.

[OOC: ‘Vith’ is too rude to translate , but the other sentence translates as: “Forgive me. If you were not so gentle I know that I’d feel far worse than I do now.”

I think I’ve included enough actions for 2 rounds. Since Aelistae will be moving and picking up her sword. And then she’ll be looking around her, while she draws her sword as a free action and casts a spell. The spell she’s casting is cat’s grace.]

I was just curious what he looked like, so I could build a mental picture of him.

Linnix does still have her cart too. But Talus would probably prefer riding.

Solvy and Reralae, Aelistae was able to trade in the various trinkets for 1500gp (according to Kaelyn). Each of the gems she's handing out is worth 500gp.

Just so both of you know

Aelistae gently stroked the forelock of her horse, as Daisy carefully sniffed at her new armour. She had never thought she would have grown accustomed to riding in the surface fashion, let alone actually look forward to it. But she did. There was too much sadness, too much heart-ache for her in Castle Tethyr, and she longed for the open road and the chance to forget some of the cares she carried.

Bart made mention of the things she had done to honour the memories of Kas and Loriel, and Aelistae nodded appreciatively. ‘He’s a good man,’ she found herself thinking, ‘like Nash.’

Aelistae shook her head, as if to dismiss, for the moment, the pain and the memories of Nash that tormented her. She clambered on top of Daisy, and carefully directed her towards Linnix and Sheva.

“I have something for each of you,” she announced as she produced two large rubies, and handed one of each to the two women. “I was able to trade the jewels and trinkets that were in the slaver’s purse for three gems – one for each of us. We were after all, all the victims of what happened. And we all deserve a reward for what we did.”

Will Aelistae be able to sell off those gems and that ring in the hour before we have to assemble at the gate?

Aelistae tightened the last straps of her satchel, grasped her bow and sword, and took one last look at the room in which she spent the night. Without her belongings in it, it somehow seemed empty and strangely devoid of life. Yet even still, the drow priestess lingered on, with the unnerving thought that she had left something behind.

“Oh…,” she remarked simply as she remembered what it was. It was the small pin Loriel had given her. Pale citrines were set within it, so as to echo the majesty of a full moon. Just looking at it sent fresh tears to Aelistae’s eyes, but, before they could fall, she turned away and left with the brooch cradled in her hands.

‘It’s strange how my own concerns seem so unimportant now,’ she reflected after she had left the Inn, and had made her way to the small shrine that had been constructed around the burnt building down the road. Men and women still lingered around it, leaving wreaths and lighting candles for women they had never met or known in life. It was a strange sight to Aelistae’s drow eyes, but she admired the gesture. And before long a small brooch lay in amidst the flowers and trinkets – a gift that Loriel had given her to show that she cared and which Aelistae was returning in death to show that she did too.

The War of the Spider Queen series was alright (in parts). If you like the Dark Elf trilogy then you'll enjoy it, since the writing is better than what Salvatore could manage.

And on that note, the later Salvatore stuff is better than the earlier things he wrote. So 'The Path of Darkness' series (written in the late 90s and early 00s) is far better that the slightly unrefined Icewind Dale series.

I haven't read any of the non-FR stuff that has come out recently, so I can't comment on the other novels.

Aelistae shot out a hand and grasped Linnix’s own. “Don’t leave. We’re all family, and you’re part of that no?”

The drow priestess shook her head and turned briefly to the woman who had just joined them. “Forgive me,” she nodded apologetically, “This is Sheva, the woman who helped Linnix and I last night. I don’t know how she came to be there, but she fought bravely.”

Ah ok, no worries.

On another note, people are still yet to claim the potions we recovered a while back. Since no one else has expressed a desire to take them, Aelistae will pick up the 'neutralize poison' potion (which will save her needing to memorize the spell) and the 'haste' potion (unless anyone else wants it).

Also, Aelistae will probably look to sell off the ring and gems that were thrown her way after the fight with the slavers (apart one gem which she gave to Tessa). If she's able to do so, she'll divide the money between herself, Sheva and Linnix.

Subject: Being a true drow

“Sometimes I think it would be easier to live how my mother lived. To spare no thought if a companion dies, to feel no guilt…” Aelistae remarked after Artanis followed her outside and laid a comforting hand upon her shoulder.

“I’m not sure if I’ll ever be alright with this,” she added as the tears finally dried. “I had my problems with Kasenarion…I thought her head-strong and foolish, but I am not so blessed with friends that I can afford to cast those I have aside.”

“I’m sorry…I don’t think I’m making much sense. But, thank you Artanis for…for being you.”

Aelistae patted the half-elf’s hands gratefully, as she turned to head back inside the Inn.

---

The drow priestess listened quietly as Artanis and Talus described what had happened the previous night. From all that was told her – of the crazed wizard, the burning house, the child held hostage – Aelistae realized that there was little she could have done to help Kas or Loriel. That realization, however, was of little comfort to her. And nor were the comments of Linnix.

’So cold. Like a true drow,' she thought darkly.

Topic: Forgotten Realms: the Unsung Heroes Q/A
Subject: Tyr Info.

Ok I won't go in to the history and dogma of Tyr, but here's the 'clergy and temples' entry of the deity in Faiths and Pantheons.

The Tyrran faith appeals to those who seek to bring order to the disorderly, to punish the wicked, and to ensure that civilization prospers through a careful, fair system of justice. Theirs is a doctrine of justice through benevolent force and armed vigilance, a philosophy that makes the faith attractive to paladins and lawful fighters. Most adherents do not fight in the field, however, instead seeing to important battles in the courts as bureacrats, judges, baiiffs, and merchants. Tyrrans tend to view all affairs in clear-cut moral terms, preferring to see the world ordered by just laws that provide the greatest benefit to all. They tend towards intolerance, sometimes violently so, and seldom tolerate mockery, parody, or the questioning of their faith.

Clerics of Tyr bring law to lawless lands, often serving as judge, jury, and executioner. Without a civilized legal code with which to guide their judgements, they often default to a doctrine roughly equivalent to "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." However, Tyrrans prefer to err on the side of mercy, and otherwise commute otherwise harsh sentences for cases in which the offender was ignorant of any wrongdoing. Such criminals usually find their names recorded in the cleric's 'Book of Lawgiving', which is then shared with the nearest temples to prevent that perpetrator repeating the offence and getting off lightly. Powerful clerics frequently employ the 'mark of justice' spell to add magical coercion to their stern lectures to convicted criminals.

In civilized lands, Tyrrans (inevitably called "tyrants" by their legion detractors) tend to become legal experts, advising rulers, judges, or powerful merchants on the intricacies of the law and arguing cases before magistrates. They view the latter as charity, donating their (sometimes lavish) "speaking fees" to the church.

Regardless of their setting, Tyrrans can never enforce a law that can be shown to be unjust - definied by the church as out of compliance with the principles and definitions adhered to by other laws in the body of legal doctrine of which it is part. This sometimes forces Tyrrans to support very unfair laws that are, nonetheless, just. In many such cases, Tyrrans attempt to change the laws by working within the system. Those who break even unfair laws as a form of defiance or political dissent are nonetheless guilty, in their view, and deserve to be punished to the fullest extent the law allows.

In some cases, Tyrrans act as agents of vengeance for those who have been wronged and who cannot afford or are no longer around to defend themselves. In such cases, when the law is so broken down as to become meaningless, clerics of Tyr act openly to defy evil or corrupt forces, martyring themselves if such becomes necessary.

The well-connected, highly organized Church of Tyr sponsors an extensive system of fortified temples throughout Faerun. Each subscribes to a strict set of internal rules known as the Innumerable Edicts, which seem to grow more onerous and more pedantic with each coming year.

Currently the sprawling Fortress Faithful in Tethyr (south of Zazesspur) holds the most influential position in the church, as many faithful flocked there during that land's recent civil war, and have stayed on to ensure stability in the region. The massive House of Tyr's Hand in Thesk represents a more staid, traditionalist sect of the church, and shelters the Just Knights - clerics, paladins and fighters who have honoured the Maimed God in countless battles against their aggresive neighbours in Thay. Individual temples of Tyr offer lodging, fresh mounts, healing, spell aid, weapons, gear and holy advice, as well as confession of sins, which plays an absolving role in the faith.

Ok that'll do. I'm exhausted after typing that...

Yep, that's true, but not in the way you might think. In lawless areas they may act as Wyatt Earp-clones, but in more civilized areas (such as Tethyr) they are more akin to magistrates and organized police.

The reason I brought it up is this. Although according to the game mechanics a cleric of Tyr can choose the 'retribution' domain, that does not make Tyr a 'God of Retribution.' The portfolio that belongs to Tyr is that of Justice. (portfolio being the area of temporal affairs that he has been assigned by Ao). There actually is a human God of Retribution, called Hoar, with whom Tyrists do not get along.

I'll post up some info a little later from the Faiths and Pantheons book. It has the detail about Tyr that's lacking from the FRCS.

In less poetic parlance, the Sinda are starting to look very, very strong indeed.

I have a series of characters that are becoming very powerful. In addition, the fact that I've created 6 new camps had improved my economy drastically.

So far there have been some attempts to assassinate some Sinda characters but none have been successful. This is in large part due to my agent strength, since I have 5 pure agents wandering around, and some of those are starting to get very sneaky indeed.

There was an encounter that my mages benefitted from with Galadriel a while back, which I quite enjoyed:

'Last evening, after the troops had been fed, and the fires were banked for the night, a glow appeared to all within the camp from the surrounding trees. As the glow came nearer, all could see that the light emanated from an Elven female of wondrous beauty. The creatures of the wood seemed to grow quiet as she passed beneath the stately trees. As she entered our camp, the birds seemed to start singing and the forest became alive with noise. The troops also felt enheartened by her mere presence, and I hastened to welcome her to our poor camp. "I am called Galadriel, and I am glad to welcome you to the fight against the Darkness. I will seek out any of you who have mage skill and see if I can be of any small assistance to them." As she passed among the troops, even the tired among us felt rejuvenated and blessed that she had deigned to spend some time among us. For each Mage she found, she spoke of the spells they knew. To some, she imparted some of the ancient knowledge. And with that she left by entering the forest, which seemed to just swallow her from sight.'

That's about everything, so I'll update things in a few weeks time. I'm not sure if anyone cares to read this stuff...but i'm going to be stubborn and write it anyway.

Topic: Sojourn in Middle Earth
Subject: Well...

Well several weeks have past, and turn 8 has come to a close. About time to update this methinks.

A few weeks ago the elves of Lorien (ie me) under King Amroth evicted the Nazgul from their last lair within Mirkwood. Once again the eaves of the great forest were liberated from the malefic influence of Sauron. Amroth of Lothlorien renamed the forest Eryn Lasgalen - or the Wood of the Greenleaves.

In the north the dour Dwarves, the stoic Boernings and the sons of the Kings of Arnor have swept away the Witch King of Angmar. No longer will his shadow hang like a dark cloud in the North. And thanks to the craft of Tharudan (Sinda super agent who has stolen his most powerful artifact) the Witch King himself will soon fall at the hands of King Bain I of Khazad-dum.

In the Bay of Belfalas and the South, Sauron has corrupted the hearts of the Haradrim and they, along with the eighth of the Nazgul (the Quiet Avenger) have sent their navies to ravage the the towns of the Princes of Dol Amroth (South Gondor). But it was something we long suspected. The Quiet Avenger's champion fell under an assassin's blade after rampaging through two Gondorian towns, and the Haradrim have been interecepted by the Cardolanese and Sindarin navies before they could even reach land.

[The one thing left to decide then is which way the Corsairs will turn. If they choose Sauron - as we suspect - things are going to really heat up].

Meanwhile Gondor itself has been hard pressed. The ancient capital of Osgiliath has swapped hands innumerable times, but its bridge over the Anduin to Minas Anor (Minas Tirith) has been destroyed. The forces of Sauron are pillaging through the towns of Gondor on the east bank of the Anduin, and it seems likely they'll try and ford the river near Pelargir in an attempt to smash the heirs of Numenor.

The Eothraim and the Dwarves, and all good folk have thrown thousands of brave souls at the Black Gates, in an effort to relieve the pressure. But so far our attempts have been in vain.

In the far South and East the brave men of Khand (the Easterlings) have engaged in a series of lightning swift raids on Mordor, while their huge armies of horse and Mumluk (they had an encounter in which they recruited the huge beasts!) have rampaged through the South and are now beseiging the capital of the Quiet Avenger.

I don't think I'll ever get round to buying the 4th edition PHB myself. It would just really depress me, so I'm happy to go on pretending it never came into being.

Just as a quick comment on your last post, DM, Tyr is not the God of retribution. The portfolio of the Even-Handed god is one thing only, and that is 'Justice'. In fact killing someone without proof - although not actively punished - would be frowned upon since Tyrrans are supposed to keep detailed records of their actions so that their activities can be assessed by their peers.

Basically Tyrrans act as lawmen and judges rather than vigilantes.

Well we don't have to have a full recounting of events for Talus or Sheva's in any posts we do. Someone could do a simple: 'X briefly recounted the tale of their days together' or words to that effect.

That'll keep it brief, since both of you (as players) know exactly what happened!
