Welcome to the game Reralae!

Which character is she/he (forgive me for not knowing what sex you are!) going to take over?

Well it will be a shame to lose Zonk and Longshadow. I was enjoying their contributions.

Since it's been a while without any news, however, 2 would be my favourite option. It's the one that easiest both for you and us as the players to manage.

If there are no takers I'd rather the characters be phased out rather than they be killed off. I'd like for other people to join in their place, though, since there would be room.

A fleck of the man’s blood stained Aelistae’s dark cheek, as she peered into the man’s eyes and listened to his desperate gurgling. A tear glimmered in her eye and she felt a fresh wave of pity for the poor wretch.

‘If only Lolth’s chosen were forced to look into the eyes of those they sacrificed,’ she thought to herself, ‘perhaps then they would hesitate before bringing their prey to the altar.’

Bart, however, did not share Aelistae’s empathy. He informed her and her companions of who he thought was responsible, and he told them all that he agreed with what ‘the Cardinal’ had done.

Aelistae spun to face the farmer, to tell him that he was wrong, that there was a difference between a swift death to punish the wicked and torturing them for one’s own sick pleasure. But the words never made it to her throat before Bart walked away. Aelistae stared at the human’s back and shed that tear – both for the man who had been crucified and in response to the callous attitude of her patron.

“Jallil, jous dosst ka'lith ulu nindol quortek. Xun naut ori'gato ukta gheut l'huthin dro maglust,”* she whispered in prayer as her hands closed around the comforting hilt of her sword.

“May your soul find some rest,” she added in the inelegant tongue of the surface.

With that said, she lifted her sword from its perch in the earth and sent it plunging down to skewer the man’s heart and quickly end his life.

She knelt by the dead man’s side for a moment, and gently closed his eyes, before remounting Daisy in silence.

OOC: *“Lady, take pity upon him. Do not let him wander the afterlife unclaimed.”

A soft sigh escaped from Aelistae’s lips, and a quiet sadness fell over her as she gazed down at the human.

If Aelistae had been born on the surface, where torture and cruelty were something to be abhorred, she would have shed a tear at seeing a man being crucified. But she had born in Menzoberranzen where even noble drow were sacrificed in ways so depraved as to defy comprehension. At night, when she closed her eyes, she could still see the sacrificial altars of Lolth, hear the screams of the dying and smell the sickly-sweet scent of freshly shed blood. Memories of Menzoberranzen tortured her still. The only advantage was that it had her hardened her to the cruelties of other races.

“There’s nothing I can do for him,” she whispered sadly to the others. “I have no more blessings of the Lady to give, or at least none that will save him.”

The drow priestess slowly dismounted from Daisy, and walked over to the suffering individual. Falling to her knees by his side, she slowly drew her sword and placed it blade first into the soft, yielding earth.

“I don’t know if you can hear me, but if you can, know that I have no wish to see you suffer like this. If you help us, I swear by the Lady I shall give you a swift, merciful death.”

OOC: I’ll wait to see if he can still talk before adding any more.

Subject: The dark lord Sauron...err, Bane

There were many things about humankind that Aelistae did not know or understand. The human settlements she had seen lacked the brutal beauty of drow cities or the simple elegance of the elves. Human concepts of marriage and fidelity were something Aelistae found strangely exotic. And concepts of kingship were something alien to her. But even Aelistae knew of the Black Hand, and seeing that image upon the disk sent a shudder through her.

“Bane,” she muttered, as she handed the wrapped up item to Bart.

“The image bears the image of the Bane, the Lord of Darkness,” she repeated in a slightly louder and more confident tone. “If we knew nothing else about the man that ran away, that would be enough to chase him.”

Aelistae clambered onto Daisy’s saddle, and trotted to Loriel’s side.

“Lead on, Sister.”

OOC: Aelistae assist on Loriel’s survival rolls to track the bandit (if needed)

Aelistae carefully pulled back a little more of the cloak to reveal the image in full.

[OOC: Will try a knowledge:religion here. I think I know what it is, but I'm not sure Aelistae would know.]

After running her eye over the image, she quickly wrapped up the disk once more and handed it to Bart.

As she made to hand over the disk to Bart, Aelistae caught out of the corner of her eye the hint of an image upon the disk. Tilting her head curiously, the drow woman pulled back the fabric of the cloak a little to see if she could make any sense of it.

“It might well be evil,” Aelistae replied as she placed the scroll she had been examining back in its case. “But examining it could tell us more about these men we just fought. We can stow it safely for now and talk about it later.”

The drow priestess knelt down upon the earth and picked up the singed, but largely intact cloak that Loriel had salvaged. Without physically touching the surface of the item, she carefully wrapped it in the folds of the cloak, before handing it Bart so that he could stow it away.

“Oh, there’s this as well,” she added, waving the scroll case with an apologetic smile. “It contains a spell I recognize. I hope you don’t mind if I keep it?”

[OOC: I’m guessing only Elesia would be able to use the scroll safely apart from Aelistae. If any others would rather have it, feel free to say]

“I wish we had more time for introductions or to discuss this attack, but I think Loriel’s right. Let’s ride and see if we can chase down that last human.”

With that said Aelistae scampered away to fetch Daisy. It was time to find some answers to the riddle.

A smile sprang up upon Aelistae’s lips as Kas rose slowly to her feet and thanked her for her the healing she had imparted.

“There is no need to thank me, Sister. I would have failed Lady Eilistraee had I let you slip away unaided.”

“My name is Aelistae D’Vrann,” she added with a slight bow, “I would be honoured to learn the name your mother gave you, and what you know of these men who attacked you.”

The drow woman turned momentarily, catching the faint outline of translucent wings upon Elesia’s back as she cast a spell upon the items Loriel had gathered. Her eyes widened slightly at the sight, but she did not comment upon what she had seen. Everyone had secrets that they at times they did not wish to divulge. And it was not as if Aelistae herself had not tried to hide her heritage.

“It may be that the disk is attuned to a sect or some group,” Aelistae offered in response to Elesia’s warning. “I could commune with Eilistraee this night, and ask her about the item. Until then perhaps we should avoid interacting with it?”

Whilst she avoided the disk, however, Aelistae did pick up the scroll case and examine its contents.

OOC: Aelistae will just see if she can make any sense of what’s written on the scroll. If it’s a spell and she can’t read it she’ll cast read magic.

Lolth actually is an FR deity. She tends to float around in the background of Greyhawk, but its in the world of FR that she is a 'grounded' deity. (having numerous novels written about her and her worshippers, the story of her once being Araushnee etc.)

Pelor of course isn't. Unless Kas has been plane-hopping. And the ideal substitute for Pelor in the FR pantheon is Lathander the Morninglord.

I seem to recall, though, that Kas was worshipping Tyr. Or is that just me imagining things?

Ah sorry I misread your question.

Rangers can't spontaneously cast from their spell lists, unfortunately. And I believe cure light wounds is a 2nd level spell for a ranger (don't ask me why though!). Unfortunately a cure minor isn't possible since rangers don't get 0 level spells.

Aelistae nodded, seeing the wisdom in Elesia’s words.

“That might be best, especially if we intend to track down the last of these…” Aelistae paused trying to think of the best word to describe the group they had fought off. Clearly they were more than bandits, and yet she knew little of humans and even less of what group they might represent. “…Humans,” she finished at last with a shrug.

“I have come across bandits before, but none like these. They were willing to die rather than be captured. To attack an armed group rather than flee. And the bridge and river we saw were illusions.”

Aelistae cocked her head as if pondering the mystery, before shrugging once more, and turning to regard the prone form of Kas.

“How are you feeling?” she asked the woman in her lilting common.

In that case perhaps we should try and track him down (at least for a few hours). On horseback we should be faster than his overland speed.

Well that's all of Aelistae's healing gone for the day. Not sure how late it is in the day, but we should perhaps think of camping soon.

That is unless people want to try and chase down/track the 'bandit' that fled.

Aelistae smiled graciously as Elesia praised her abilities to heal those stricken by the sword-arms of the bandits and by their parting gift of the fireball.

‘Although these men were like no bandits I’ve ever seen,’ she thought to herself as she recalled their willingness to throw away their own lives rather than surrender.

Aelistae shook her head and the errant thought away. There were still sick comrades that needed her attention.

“If you can aid me in healing the stranger, Sister, I would be grateful,” the drow priestess said to Elesia with a gesture towards Kas. “Eilistraee is a generous mistress, but I fear that I’ll soon have spent all of the blessings she has given me this day.”

Aelistae briefly touched her own forehead, and that of Xaris as she made her way to Kas’ side once more.

“I am not hear to hurt you,” she whispered to the stranger, aware of how her appearance could startle surface races. Except when Aelistae looked at the woman without the horrific burns she had been clad in before, she realised that she was not a member of any of the surface races she had seen. She was beautiful but in an odd, unearthly way.

Aelistae promised herself that she would ask the woman about it later. For the moment she contented herself with a swift prayer to her Goddess, and another spell of healing over the stranger.

OOC: Cure Light Wounds on Xaris, Aelistae and Kas. 1d8+3 for each spell.

Aelistae’s eyes ran along the length of the arrow nocked to her bow, and out towards the two bandits who were still standing. She tensed her muscles and prepared to fire, only for one of the two men to throw down two red beads at his feet.

“Oh no,” she managed to gasp, her eyes widening in horror. She had seen such devices before, and her mouth opened as she tried to shout a warning.

All that came out was a strangled scream. A searing ball of fire erupted around her, and all Aelistae could do was to try and avoid the worst of the blast. She dived to the ground and rolled until the red heat of the fireball was replaced by the cooling air of the summer’s day.

Aelistae winced as she staggered to her feet. Her armour chafed over skin that was blistered and burnt, and her ears still rang with the noise of the fireball.

A noise to her left caused the drow woman to spin in that direction. It was Elesia, who looked as bad as Aelistae felt, and she seemed to be mouthing something in her direction.

It took several seconds before the cacophony in her ears died down and she heard the words: “She‘s dying.” Aelistae followed Elesia’s gaze and saw at last the stricken form of the woman who had been attacked by the bandits. Her skin was charred black, and, even though Loriel appeared to be tending to her wounds, Aelistae knew it would take more than bandages to help her.

“Not if I can help it,” the drow priestess managed to reply in a throaty whisper, before rushing to side of the stricken woman.

She knelt upon earth charred blacker than her own skin, and lightly touched a brooch that she wore depicting a naked, drow woman dancing before a full moon.

“Jallil, plynn brou pholor ilta,”* she muttered quietly before leaning forward to kiss the woman’s forehead.

Eilistraee answered. The brooch shone a brilliant silver, and Aelistae directed the blessing of her Goddess into the prone form of Kas.

[Cure moderate wounds on Kas for 2d8+3. Aelistae will also spend one charge of her healing belt to heal Kas for an additional 2d8. So that’s a total of 4d8+3.]

Her breathing eased, and the burns scarring her flesh receded to an angry pink.

“Bel’la dos,”* the priestess added, before touching her belt once more in order to heal some of her own wounds.

[Aelistae is spending one charge of her healing belt to heal herself for 2d8.]

Aelistae rose to her feet more steadily than she did before. Her skin still tingled and felt raw, but she knew that some rest would soon ease whatever pain she still felt. She also knew that she still had work to do.

“If you were a little taller, I would think you were drow,” Aelistae joked quietly as she knelt before the blackened form of Xaris and administered her Lady’s blessing upon the fierce gnome warrior.

[Same as with Kas. Cure moderate wounds for 2d8+3, and spending the last charge of her healing belt to heal for an additional 2d8. So that’s also 4d8+3 healing.]

Lastly, Aelistae stepped close to Loriel. Her movements were tentative, for in truth she was unsure that the elf would accept help from a drow.

“Sister, I can ask the Lady of the Dance to heal some of your wounds. Will you allow me to do so?”

[If Loriel agrees, Aelistae will impart a cure light wounds upon her. So that’s 1d8+3 healing.]

OOC:

*“Lady, take pity on her,” and “thank you,” in drow.

Aelistae has used up all of her second level spells, and will has turned ‘true-strike’ into a cure light wounds. That’ll give her 3 cure light wounds that she can still cast. I want to save those until I know what the result of the healing rolls are. If they’re all high she’ll start healing Loriel’s animals, otherwise she’ll spend them on Kas, Xaris and Loriel.
