Subject: Sojourn in Middle Earth

Hi everyone.

You may have all read GreyGrey's recounting of his time as the Corsairs of Umbar in a diplomacy/wargame set in Middle Earth. Well he inspired me to try it for myself, and after having a go at the intro. module for the past few months (it's pretty affordable if any of you wish to try it), I've just embarked on my first full game. (yay!)

I've been assigned as the Sinda Elves (the Elves of Mirkwood and Lothlorien combined). Unfortunately there's is no pretty Legolas to admire (*sobs*), but it does promise to be a fun game.

If no one objects, and if people are interested, I'll update you over the next weeks and months with what transpires.

Topic: Forgotten Realms: The Unsung Heroes
Subject: A brief conversation

She listened to the words carefully, feeling the depth of Linnix’s frustration and anger at the way in which Loriel had treated her. It was impossible for Aelistae to disagree. The elven woman had ridden roughshod over the feelings of others, and had seemed oblivious to any sense of wrongdoing.

Yet for all that, Aelistae was more confused than angry.

Most drow were taught from the earliest age to hate the ‘faeries’ of the surface, and that there was no greater honour than to slaughter an elf in cold blood. The Elistraeyn were different. Aelistae had been encouraged to see in elves all that she was missing, and all that she could one day become. Parables were told of the love and everyday kindnesses of surface elves, of their willingness to lay down their lives for that in which they believed, and the respect they had garnered from the other races of Faerun. Rather than hate elves, the Elistraeyn reified them.

Loriel, however, seemed to fall short of that ideal, and that realization troubled the drow priestess.

’Were we wrong? Have we merely swapped an unconditional hatred for an unconditional love, and missed the truth of what they are actually like?’

Aelistae found that she had no answer, and that troubled her all the more.

“I…understand,” she replied at last to Linnix. “A trouble shared is a trouble halved, and I am always available if you need to talk more.”

Aelistae continued on in silence, wondering if she could ever share her own concerns.

Aelistae nodded as first Elesia and then Bart spoke, although in truth their words merely reminded the drow woman how little she knew about humankind.

Every other human she met seemed to be so unlike the others she had seen. Zacharias clearly thought nothing of endangering innocent lives, but Bart did. The group that accosted Aelistae had desired to harm her because of the half-truths and stories they had heard of dark elves, but Ash had saved her even though he knew what she was. And although Bart spoke of Castle Tethyr and the Sulduskoon River as if they were common knowledge, Aelistae knew nothing at all of them.

‘So much still to learn,’ she reminded herself, as she urged Daisy on, and began to follow Bart on his quest.

----

[After an hour or so into the journey:]

Daisy proved to be a delight to ride. Aelistae was sure that the horse could sense her anxiety, especially on those occasions that she had pulled on her reins in one direction when she had intended to go in the other, but the mare seemed to take it all in her stride.

“Diola ile,”* she whispered in the horse’s ear after leaning close to affectionately pat the creature.

The horse nickered in response, and Aelistae rose to sit upright in her saddle feeling glad for Daisy’s companionship. As she gaze upon the assembled group, the drow woman found herself feeling the same way about all those that had so unquestioningly accepted her.

“You had some questions for me earlier I think,” Aelistae asked Linnix quietly as she slowed Daisy to match the pace of the woman’s cart. “I would welcome the conversation if you wish to ask them.”

*Elvish for ‘thank you’

Well simply because I'd rather people read/view and then argue against something they disagree with, rather than anticipate they're going to dislike something and ignore it.

I have no problem with people boycotting or doing whatever it is they want to do. But I don't see how people can make that choice about a novel, when all that boycott is based upon is received wisdom.

That's actually a bit unfair on Pullman.

The novels that he wrote - the 'His Dark Materials' - trilogy, is really interesting in literary terms. To describe them as being anti-Christian is to over-simplify things. A far more accurate term would be anti-clerical, but even that isn't fully appropriate. The novels are actually pretty remarkable because they seek to take big ideas and bid debates and present them in a form that children can engage with. That does not make them into an anti-religious polemic.

I have seen the movie, and I'm sure they'll go on to adapt his other books into films. Unfortunately the cinema adaptation takes the bare bones of the books and throws aside the heart and soul of the novels.

But then I suppose it's not the first time that's happened.

Just realized there is something missing from my last post. You asked for a marching order, Kaelyn, and I don't think I've provided one for Aelistae now that she's on a horse.

She'll be riding to side of Linnix's cart, unless the road is so narrow that it makes it impossible. If so, she'll ride behind it.

Aelistae’s violet eyes fastened upon the horse Elesia had summoned for her use. In all her time upon the surface she had rarely ridden a horse and had rarely felt the need to ride. The places that the Lady of the Dance favoured were locked in the wilds of Faerun where horses or other steeds could not easily travel. But more than that, Aelistae had always been loath to put her life in the hands of a horse by clambering upon its back and hoping it would not object to her presence.

Her feelings changed somewhat as she looked upon Daisy. She was a beautiful animal. Though her white coat rippled with the powerful muscles that lay underneath, Aelistae found herself believing Elesia’s promise that she was a kind and gentle creature. It also touched Aelistae that the elf would allow a drow to ride such a magnificent beast.

The decision to accept Elesia’s gift, however, was only made when Aelistae saw and heard the furious charge of Zacharias and his band.

Aelistae rushed out from her position on Linnix’s cart, grabbed Daisy’s reins and quickly led her away from the gate. Her eyes flickered with anger as she watched the band rush past without stopping, knowing that they would have crushed the horse beneath their feet without a second thought.

“Xal dos mechrola pholor nath’orbb,”* the drow muttered, mouthing a curse common among the Elistraeen.

Yet her anger was fell away when she gave a tentative pat to Daisy to calm the creature. She found herself loving the mare, and soon after Zacharias and his cronies had ridden on, Aelistae carefully mounted the steed.

“I would be honoured to ride her, Sister,” she added appreciatively to Elesia.

After carefully directing the horse to Linnix’s cart, so that she could reclaim her weapons, and after hearing Barbb’s angry retort, Aelistae turned in her saddle to speak to her.

“I am hope that you are wrong, but I fear…,” Aelistae paused and shrugged, “well it doesn’t matter.”

“But come,” she added, to the others. “Let us be on our way. If you think it best that we take the longer route, Barrbarra and Linnix, then I support your decision. My only preference, though, is that we not linger here and have others try to trample over us.”

* ‘May you choke on a spider.’

I suppose I'm quite valuable. Not sure that helps much, though, since it's kind of pointless to sell your own corpse.

Aelistae’s eyes widened as Linnix hopped down from her cart and spoke to Loriel. Her anger and outrage was plain for all to see, and the drow woman wondered if for a moment she might not strike Loriel.

Thankfully it did not come to that, and Linnix returned, still shaking with anger, but with no more than harsh words spoken.

As Linnix returned to her cart, Aelistae tentatively strode across it to place a reassuring hand upon the human’s shoulder. The priestess did not want simmering anger to tear apart the small group that had been assembled before they had been embarked on their quest, even if Aelistae privately agreed with the sentiments that Linnix had expressed.

Aelistae turned to nod at Barrb after she had spoken. It was half out of respect for her wisdom and experience in warcraft, and half out of the concern she had shown to have a quiet word with Loriel.

"Then we should take the road, if you think it best. And Xaris, please join us, I would welcome the company."

Regarding the marching order for when they depart, Aelistae is wherever Linnix decides to be (unless she kicks her off her cart )

I'll have a look and see if I can find anything suitable for Loriel, if it's a problem to search for you.

Aelistae knew the road before her was likely to be difficult, but the drow woman could barely conceal her excitement. It would be the first time in her life that she would associate at length with any of the surface races, and she longed to learn more about them. But more than that, her heart was still beating rapidly after her flight from some of Darromar’s less wholesome citizens.

Aelistae raised the fingers of her right hand to her lips, recalling the kiss she had stolen from Ash. She smiled as she wondered what the human had made of her actions and whether he had been amused or shocked by her behaviour.

‘Probably both,’ she thought, with a sly grin.

The smile remained intact as Elesia and Bart waved in her direction, and invited her to join them.

Aelistae replied with a nod to greet each of her travelling companions, and then effortlessly lifted herself to sit upon the back of Linnix’s cart. “I hope you don’t mind if I sit here, Linnix? she asked the woman.

[Assuming Linnix agrees:]

The drow priestess rose to her knees and then quickly unstrapped her sheathed sword, unslung her bow, and removed her backpack. Bart explained that the journey would be a long one, and Aelistae reasoned that she might as well make herself as comfortable as possible. She rested her bow near her, and kept her sword upon her lap, knowing that in the wilds it was wise to have weapons near.

Aelistae heard the question Bart posed to the group, and then Loriel’s concerns. Aelistae cocked her head slightly and shifted in her seat so she could face the elvish woman.

“Forgive me sister, but do you think even several animals would be able to carry so many supplies?” she asked in her accented Common as she motioned towards the large barrels and footlockers that were stowed in Bart’s wagon. “And more to the point, I am not a very competent rider.”

Aelistae left unsaid her suspicion that Bart would struggle to afford a pack of mules in addition to the supplies he had already procured, largely to spare the human’s dignity.

“If you truly think it best that Linnix leave her cart behind, then I bow to your wisdom, sister. But in my opinion it would be better to leave now. It would take hours to make changes, and we do not want to give our rivals too much of a head start. Plus, as a friend recently reminded me, many folk do not look kindly upon my kind regardless of my intentions.”

The drow woman’s eyes shifted to those nearby who were already casting dangerous glances in her direction. If it bothered the priestess, however, she did not show it, choosing instead to bury their hostility beneath the same smile she had earlier worn.

“I know little of Tethyr, and little of what dangers or difficulties would await us if we do take the shorter road. Which course would you suggest?” Aelistae finished her question by glancing at each of her companions.

You're absolutely right in what you say Longshadow. I hadn't thought of it quite in that light!

Does that mean, though, that one should dump the whole possibility of detecting alignment? And if so, the whole alignment system?

As a player I've never really valued the whole concept. And as a DM it can lead to problems if you move beyond there being moral absolutes of good and evil and no shades of grey in between.

Regardless of the quirks it's still a great resource in my opinion. It'll be nice to have one place to go to for all that stuff, especially if (as I hope!) the campaign lasts for some time to come.

I suppose there's nothing quite as annoying as the paladin who consciously detects evil. It certainly can break an interestingly designed encounter if you play it that the paladin can detect more than just intent.
