Thea had thrown Eofara a terrified look when he told this strange man and his wolf, for now Thea was considering that the elf and the man indeed went together, the truth, or at least a variation of it. Her hand had fallen from his shirt and she pulled back, looking amongst those around her to see if they were as shocked as she was.

The strange man had then accused them of being liars and she trembled slightly at the accusation. Tears started to brim over her eyelids again. She didn’t step forward but from where she was she shook her head and spoke in a shaky voice that probably barely carried over to the newcomer.

With the half truth already spoken, however, and without it eliciting a overly negative response from the man she figured what could it hurt to reveal more to him. The truth was always the way to solve problems.

“Please… he speaks the truth. We… are wanted… accused unjustly of practicing magics… but… sir you must believe me it is untrue. We… we are headed… oh…” she faltered, details were not her strong point. “Well we have to find something… please this really isn’t where we should be talking about things like this, out on the road. Anyone could come by… it will grow dark soon…” she stopped and stared at the man standing by the wolf, letting her bright blue eyes search his.

Lady… may we trust him? Guide me… please my lady…

“We need a place to rest for the night… if you know a place perhaps you could guide us there and we could talk further?” She suggested, her voice calming a little bit from before as she eased into the idea that the man meant them no direct harm.

Being a school for adventurer's weapons would be alright to carry with you. However their use, save for training sessions, would not be looked upon favorably. Situations where they are used may be investigated by the facility on a case to case basis.

So... use your weapons at your own risk.

Topic: RedWyrm School of Online Adventuring - Q&A
Subject: Confrontations & Interactions

Alright... had a few messages about this so I figured I would post up some guidelines here.

For the sake of prose (something that most of us enjoy and why we are here to be honest) please feel free to elaborate on your characters actions without going into a great deal of the nitty gritty details in the text.

However, as we are still playing a rules based D&D game make sure that out of character (OOC) you clarify what has transpired.

EXE:

Jonah steps back from the dragon, not wanting to wind up with is claws decorating his skull. His lips move as he tries desperatly to focus not on the claws but on the magic that he wishes to cast. One hand spreads and from his palm a white sticky substance shoots forth, while his other hand goes to his sword.

((OOC: Attempting to cast web on the dragon. Standing outside of the dragon's reach, so... 20 feet away. Am also preparing to draw sword for next round))

When it comes to the actions of your fellow players or NPC's, it gets a bit trickier. If you have a question about something they might do (especially when your actions are dependent on it) send a note to the person responsible for their actions (player or DM) and ask them, you might also do best to ask them if it is okay to include that information in your post. If the action is small and relatively assumable you can post it without asking (Just as Tus did in his last post). However, be prepared to change it if needed later.

EXE:

When the final arrow had soared through the air she turned and looked back at the others behind her. She smiled when she saw their looks of approval at her actions.

((OOC: Assuming everyone is pleased with her killing off the incoming hobgoblin and avoiding a fight))

Ela's head continued to throb.

When the Kobolds sank to the ground and melted into the grass she had stroked her bow and offered a thank you to the man she felt protected her. Watching them melt made her stomach turn, and as her boots moved in the slimy grass her mind could not help but wonder what bodies had made the rest of the lawn turn slick.

As they made their way to the back of the manor she felt a little bit of, strange, relief when they came across the statues. At least they had not been stepping over what remained of the party guests, or at least not all of them, the whole time. Some at least were frozen in stone, sometimes effect could be reversed.

Around her the smell of used magic continued to assault her olfactory senses, the red light pulsed between the globes of 'real' light made by the torches, a few torches sputtered and the sound of crackling flame rose the hairs on her arms even more than the sounds of the creatures on the platform gnawing away at something.

Crow had decided to sneak forward to get a closer look. And once again she followed behind him, giving him enough space to let him work, but close enough to offer him protection with her bow.

"Stay with me melamin..." she whispered into her viel while she tiptoed with her fellow Syl toward the platform.

Since they moment they had met she had done her best to protect Crow, and she would continue to do so.

Subject: Who is this?

With the appearance of others Thea’s nerves calmed down some. At least it was easier to forget some of the more troubling aspects of this trip and focus on getting to know everyone. The bard was particularly intriguing to her, his gallant bow when he appeared made her giggle. However, it was with the elf that she continued her conversation while they traveled.

He was so different than anyone she had ever met before. The silver laced language he spoke was enthralling and she continued to ask him to tell her how to say things in his language while they spoke. Mainly it was polite things, as in ‘good morning’ or ‘goodnight’ but the objects they passed along the way sometimes became the subject of her inquiries as well, such as ‘tree’ or ‘bird’. When she was not trying out his language on her own tongue she kept it busy by asking him other questions.

She wanted to know why he had left his home and what it that home was like. Many of her questions showed how ignorant she was when it came to elves. Asking him if they lived in trees and didn’t have to eat. Other questions focused on the plague though, which she seemed to have a great knowledge of and wanted to know how it affected his people and how far it had reached its grasp onto elven lands.

A giggle and a blush often accompanied her questions or his answers while they walked, and for a little while she had put the reason for this journey out of her mind.

That was until the wolf blocked their path. Her feet slowed to a complete stop the moment she saw it, her blue eyes widening into bright saucers. Never before had she been so close to a wild animal in all her life, the experience was mesmerizing and terrifying at the same time. She heard her father’s voice in her head reminding her to never stare a wild animal directly in the eyes, that it might spook them and cause them to attack. Despite his voice she could not do anything but stare into its eyes.

Her breath held as she caught Rose moving forward out of the corner of her eyes. “Don’t…” she whispered too softly for Rose to hear her.

The dark beads of the wolfs eyes kept her so rapt that when the man stepped out of the forest she did not notice him until he stood by the wolf. A gasp pulled from her lungs when she caught sight of him, standing there tall, rugged and silent. The weapons he carried were prominently displayed and made her cringe slightly. Without thinking she took a step backwards, behind Eofara and reached out with her thin fingers, brushing his sleeve as if seeking his protection.

I must say speeddemon this is the only time I have ever seen a whole post written in first person.

I have always found that writing in first person is very challenging, so I am going to try and make things a bit easier for you. Try it in third person next time.

It is a great way to get into character, though, and please please please feel free to include your character's thoughts in your post (which will be in first person). But actions and such are usually better in third.

Part of the reason for this is just because so many of the games we run here include combat of some kind and using the more standard form of 'He dove right' is easier for other people to read and understand.

Looking forward to your next post!

First of all, good job on the character interaction you started. Talking to Ion and then bumping into Steelight is a great way to get rp started with your fellow players

Still could use some work on format yet though. I know that Ion gave you some advice on how to improve your recapping of conversation from other players and I was pleased to see that you made some of those adjustments. You'll notice I struck through some of what was left. Internal thoughts of other characters should not really be included in your posts.

Editing other people's posts to incorporate your own perspective is an art that is very nervewracking sometimes and is difficult to say the least.

Your begining line ('Levanna Amarker listened intently to the professor') is one great way to do it well though. Unless your character is going to directly respond to something someone said there is no reason to copy and paste the text. A quick recap like you did works fine. If you are going to have your character respond to something try to only grab the speech part of their posts, and perhaps any important descriptions of pure action.

EXE:

Merideth posts:

Merideth stared at Levanna suspiciously. "I want to know the truth Levanna. Have you broken into the kitchen and replaced the stock of gruel with chicken bones?"

It is a pretty good prank, more effective at getting my attentions than Ion's constant nagging I'll admit... but if she did... I'm going to have to do something... chicken bones!? I'm not sure if I should punish her or give her rewards for such creativity! Meri thought to herself, but mantained the steely look while she gazed at Levanna.

Tus Lased posts:

Levanna trembled under the suspicious glare of Merideth.

It wasn't really my fault... it was do it or get drowned by those half-orc bullys!

But the words just wouldn't come to her throat, even when the directors voice spoke, "I want to know the truth Levanna. Have you broken into the kitchen and replaced the stock of gruel with chicken bones?"

She swallowed hard, her eyes getting larger.

Chicken bones!?

"What are you talking about!?" She exclaimed with a ring of sincerity to her voice.

I put whole chickens in there! What happened to them!?

Ah another loyal poster! Well done, I love your formatting which makes your posts easy to read and understand.

I have two small things for you.

First, lets work on getting those 'scene setting' lines I have demanded from you in italics. If you don't know how to get something into italics check out this thread and see if that helps. If you still need some help let me know.

Second, see if you can't lengthen some of your posts just a bit and get some of those internal thoughts of your character in there. Feel free to flesh things out as you need. Add to your surroundings, if there is something you want to run by me before including it just ask here or through a PM. But little details, like watching a bug crawl across the floor in the cafeteria or something can be added without asking and add flavor to your posts

Subject: First Weeks Comments: Steelight

Kudos on the regular posting and for helping keeping things moving here. Steelight is turning into an interesting character

I would like to suggest foregoing the bold for speech. There might be certain DM's that would like speech to be highlighted in some way, but I am not one of those. My reason for this is because it can be useful to use bold to highlight specific aspects of speech and not all of it. For instance if a character needs to yell bold is appropriate:

"Look out that boulder is going to crash!"

Or when some specific part of the speech needs to be highlighted because it is said with a greater or different emotion than the rest of the sentence (depending on the emotion being used sometimes italics are more suited for this):

"I've told you a thousand times to clean up after your bullywug. Now go do it now!"

"shhhh... I got a secret to tell you!"

It can also be useful to highlight something in a personal thought when italics have already been used.

I can't believe that Steelight asked that halfling to go to the RedWyrm senior dance instead of a nice human girl like me...

I love your prose dear. You put alot into your character's posts and I hope that others can learn some by reading them over and seeing the detail that you provide.

I would recommend using that return key just a bit more

When you have an internal thought I would pull it out a little bit more to ease readability.

Crap I think I’m lost again.

Ion looked at the landscape around him. It was very nearly the first day of his third year at the Redwyrm School of Adventure and he was supposed to be there. In fact it should have been right there in front of him. But it wasn’t. Instead he was looking at a forest. A very pretty forest to be sure but a forest nonetheless.

Amazing. This time I even astound myself. Been going here for three years and I still can’t find the stupid place.

The Codge Trio
RedWyrm Cafeteria
Week 1 – Monday afternoon

Ion and Steelight continued to show the new students around the school. The first place they stopped was the dormitories. Each student was given their own room, something that most students did not complain about. The amenities were somewhat Spartan, but adequate. The rooms are just large enough for a twin sized bed, a small wardrobe, a desk and a chair. Across from the door there is a neat little square window in the wall, the courtyard it looks out into depends on what side of the hallway you are on. Those facing North get a view of the combat training grounds, those facing South get a view of the labyrinth that spreads out toward the nearby forest. Each room has a chalkboard plaque on the door, the name of the student who occupies it is scrawled on it.

After giving them a few minutes to drop off their belongings the tour continued.

The building was complex, and it was rumored that it really didn’t end. One hallway had green grass growing on the floor instead of carpet, faint music drifted down it. ‘The Gateway to Audalis’ the senior students called it. It would lead you to another world that many went to after graduating to become great adventurers.

There were hallways that were musky and smelled of knowledge. The ‘Articles’ room held texts written by famous adventurers. The ‘Armoury’ emitted noises of gears turning and billows of steam poured out from under the door. Small imps scurried in and out making sure that the machines that assisted adventurers kept running smoothly. The ‘Vault’ and the ‘Archives’ were libraries with treasures the new students looked at with awe.

A billboard of ‘Blogs’ fluttered with the wisdom of the RedWyrm facility. There was a hall which laughter bubbled out of all times of the day and night.

Finally they wound up in a large open room cluttered with chairs and tables. One wall had a long counter affixed to it and above it an opening led to the kitchen. Bowls with steaming pale colored gruel rested on the counter, just waiting for someone brave enough to pick them up and attempt to eat them. A plate sat next to the bowls, laden with dry cold toast. There was also a large bowl with bits of cheese stuck to the bottom, apparently the only way to make the gruel edible is to cover it in cheese, which has already been depleted for the day and explains the remaining bowls of gruel on the counter.

Stomachs grumbling everyone gets a bowl and settles at a table. Next to them three half orcs were eating their own, cheese covered, bowls.

Ion and Steelight would recognize the trio as ‘fourth year students’ whose names had been scrawled on their doors for over six years now, but who were finally up for the final examinations this coming spring. The reason it has taken so long to get to this point might have something to do with their sour dispositions, trouble with authority and overall inability to get along with others.

With a grin on his face the tallest of the three leans over and grins at the group.
“I be needin’ seconds, thanks for bringing it over…” he says while his hand reaches over and snags Amaker’s bowl from under her nose.
