Subject: Worth More Than Gold

“So ye want to know about dat?” Her eyes glittered slightly as she whispered with Karn

“No so much a pilgrim as I’d thought I sees.” A cackle erupted from her chest which overtook her completely for some minutes until it turned into a cough that wracked her body. To stop it she hit her chest and leaned over the side of the table, spitting something up onto the floor and then turned back to Karn, face red, eyes watering slightly.

“Eh… the dust round here, that and the tobac.” Again she started to laugh but managed to cut it short before she started that terrible coughing again.

“But enough lamentings of an old woman. Yeah de Scotts Brothers run the water around here. An what’s it worth? More than ye could know pilgrim, more than you could know…” She leaned back against the table and grabbed a dirty glass from behind her, it was chipped at the top and covered in a thin almost milky residue. It was a pint beer glass. Holding it between the two of them she grins at Karn.

“Ye fill up two of des with some of that clean mountain water, I let you, yer friends and hell even yer horses fer three days. But like I says ye gotta pay upfront. An don’t think I’m doin you any favors on this either. James or Henry finds you buying water from someone else…”

“Well fires have been known to start over such things. Funny thing that too, cause you either gotta watch your building go down in cinders or pay James to get water to put it out…” she cackles at that until she coughs some more.

“So… what ye say?” She leans in again, the foul stench of her breath is overwhelming, but she doesn’t seem to notice. “Get me paid an I’ll get ye all a drink and some food an we can sit here and talk all ye want…”

Grinning widely she waits for a response from this group.

The Monetary System In Despair

There is no consistent monetary system.
Cherish Valley will be more like systems in the West in that gold and other shinys are valuable.
From what the Dwarf said the current exchange would be in a certain weight of gold, or water. Weight will probably come into play anywhere you go, as the worth of a certain coin only means something in the land it was forged in.
As for how much an ounce of gold is worth here (for this particular inn) it seems to be as much as a night in the inn. *grin*

I think you will find that bartering, and trading are all very acceptable means of payment anywhere in Despair.

As for comparison, again that is all hard to say as out East the value of things changes from one Kingdom to the next. However, just on the other side of the mountain (where Karn is from) four ounces of gold would likely get you a shabby room for a night, and little else (of course the quality of these rooms and the food she is offering has not been discussed).

Other than that I'm not going to give you much help on the issue, since it is highly unlikely any of you would have much more knowledge.

As for what form the wealth you carry on you, I leave that up to you.

Part of the fun of Despair is figuring out how things work

I posted up the dwarf's response to the room and the price to give everyone a little more to go on.

Cyco - I've noted the rest of your post and will get to his conversations at the bar once we get the price negotiated. Don't want to let too much out yet.

Loki - I'll send you a PM concerning what Karn might know about Cherish Valley sometime today.

“Horses… aye. I got a small stable out back, an two rooms upstairs, not right next to each other, but both looking out the back, so ye can keep an eye on dem beaut’s. Eastern horses have a habit of disappearing round here, if ye catch me drift.” She grinned that toothless grin at them again.

Leaning back against one of the tables she examined her fingers and started to dig at the grit under her fingernails.

“One ounce a night for each room, another for the care of the horses, and if ye want I can throw in dinner and breakfast, whatever ye want – well whatever I gots that you want – for another. So that be four ounce of gold.” She leaned in a little closer to them and looked down the street both ways and back at the others on her patio.

“That be unless ye got something else to trade.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Like some good clean water from dem mountains… you got any left?”

She stared at the group her eyes wide, though with fear, or with glee, or some odd combination of them both it would be hard to tell.

In the hills of Coria the Bride and her Groom lay beneath the earth
There nothing grows
There no one goes
For cursed be the buried

At the alter Vytte had stood alone whilst lamented tears did fall
The flowers wilted
The feast soured
For the groom had not come

Before that dawn the alarm had rung and the soldiers took to arms
Cries rang from the battlefield
Cries rang from the women
For the enemy had arrived

Days the battle raged until at last the enemy retreated but few returned home
Bravely they had fought
Bravely they had died
For that was their honor

Vytte rode to the blood soaked field with hope clouding her mind
Peaceful was the land
Peaceful was her groom
For in death he rested

To the Gods she called in grief to right the wrong that had been done
Against nature they replied
Against his honor they replied
For the dead should not rise

Out of the shadows came one who offered the unnatural
Promises of life taken
Promises of love unfilled
For their souls exchanged

Vows once denied were spoken before a small bridal party
The Bride appeared frightened
The Groom appeared vacant
For a dark specter watched

Suspiciously the neighbors spoke as the Groom’s comrades lay in graves
Hidden in darkness he stayed
Hidden in shame she stayed
For no others had been found alive

Still was the night the neighbors checked on them and found them
By her hand his blood was spilt
By her hand her blood was spilt
For the dead should remain so

The Groom was finally buried and Vytte laid beside him
There nothing grows
There no one goes
For cursed be the buried

Well this is a first draft of the song she played. Let me know what you guys think.

Out East that would depend on what part of the world you come from. Magic is known in this world all throughout the land. How it is percieved will change from one culture to another. Some embrace it and weild it carelessly, others consider it a great thing to be mastered, and others are afraid of it, while others might actually deny its existance altogether (although neighboring cultures might not and their belief has to then be put down in some way).

How your characters culture viewed magic I am leaving up to you. Meithryander (the whole world, east and west) is large enough to hold anything you come up with. Cyco has already determined that Nuar comes from a hobbit village where magic is not accepted.

Out West... there is no concurrent culture, besides 'Survival of the Fittest'

However, from the stories that have made it back across the mountains you all are under the impression that magic is something that is seen regularly out there. Although the magic is bound to be on the darker side of the spectrum.

Hope that answers the question.

Subject: The Undead Have No Music Appreciation

Syana had listened to the stream of words coming from the bubbly red headed waitress with wide eyes. People that talked so much always amazed her. She lost track of what food the place had to offer and when the waitress’s eyes fell upon her for her order she simply nodded her head, hoping that the girl would bring her something edible. The girl seemed to take that nod as another order for ale, stew and some bread. As she went to go get the orders Syana slipped quietly from the table.

The blood was still on her hands, under her fingernails, on her dress. She would swear it smelled funny, and it make her feel tainted. Wandering from the table she went around the inn, looking for a water closet where she could wash her hands and dress.

Just as quietly as she slipped away she slipped back to the table after a short while. Her hands scrubbed clean and her bodice and skirt dark with wetness in spots, though darker shades in the middle of these spots attested to her inability to get the stains out completely.

Once back at the table she heartily ate the stew the waitress had brought. The stew was very good, but part of Syana wondered if the stew was actually good or if she was just so shaken and hungry that a pile of dirt would have tasted good at that moment. Either way it did not matter the food was gone in a matter of minutes.

The mood was somber in the place, which was not helping to alleviate her own feelings of discontent.

So she pulled the beautiful mandolin out of its bag and placed it across her lap. The instrument was finely worked. Made out of a red wood that had been polished to a high shine. A robin of lighter colored wood was inlaid in the body, the same bird that was embroidered on the bag it was carried in. Lidana used to make their music selections and now that she was gone Syana simply let her fingers fall upon the strings of the instrument and waited to see what happened.

Tonight she prayed that Lidana would choose something up beat for her to play, something that would lift the spirits of those around her, and perhaps more importantly lift her own. Closing her eyes she let her fingers move across the strings, but the song that came from them was not upbeat. Instead it was slow and mournful.

The Ballad of Vytte, the beautiful maiden who was betrothed to a handsome young soldier. The night before her wedding the men are called to war, and the following morning she hears that they have been slaughtered on the battlefield. Dressed in her wedding gown she goes to the battle field and wanders the blood soaked field. She finds him among the dead, but finds him to look so peaceful in his death that she cannot believe he is dead. She drags his body to the woods and invokes the Gods for help, but at first none answer the way she wants. He is dead and to undo that would be an abomination. Finally an evil spirit finds her and offers help, in return for both of their souls. The agreement is made and her love is brought back from the dead. They marry, but he is changed and she finds it difficult to live under the scrutiny of her neighbors. She shuts her and her bridegroom up in the house and no one hears from them for months. When the neighbors finally checked on them they find them both dead, he bludgeoned in his sleep, and her wrists slit.

While those unfamiliar with the story would not know the details the emotions of the ballad would be unmistakable. After the last sonorous note had finished hanging in the air she lifted her fingers from the mandolin and looked around at those around her.

With a slight blush she set her fingers upon the strings to start another song when she heard the banging on the shutters. Her fingers let one stray note into the air as she turned her head up to the windows, her eyes growing wide.

Not again… oh Lidana, please not again… she prayed in her head.

In an instant the mandolin was back in its bag and slug protectively over her shoulder. She stood up and looked at the others as she drew her sword from its sheath.

Well then... let us begin this story.

I've reposted the teaser (with a few slight adjustments) onto the game thread. I put the game thread out under the 'Modern' section of the rules based RPG's. Couldn't figure out a better place to put it.

I'll open it up and you all can work up your first posts. I haven't had a chance to really take a good hard look at the char sheets you've all sent in, but a quick look at them it seems that everything is in order, I'll let people know if anything needs to be adjusted.

Thanks!

The Arrival

Beneath their feet the stony trail that constituted the Way of the Forsaken slowly widened out as it followed the muddy river down from the mountains. Far off a blood red sky loomed behind black cancerous clouds as the sun set before them. One of the group suggested they make camp for the night. Another shook their head, and pointed ahead, two hills grew on either side of the path, and between them the group could almost make out the hunched shapes of buildings. It was agreed that they would continue until they reached this settlement.

Each step brought more clarity to the small settlement. Before they reached it, though, they passed the summit of the hill north of the trail. It rose high above them, a pile of rocks and dirt with bits of pale green grass trying to take root. At the top rose a castle, or what was left of a castle. Yellowish stone had once been the foundation of the great building. Four towers rose toward the red sky, one at each corner of the square outer wall. What lay inside remained a mystery to those below. It appeared abandoned. The heavy iron bars on the windows leaked rust down the walls; thin vines covered the heavy double door braced with iron strips; tower roofs caved inward; blocks of stone from the top of the wall had toppled and lay smashed on the ground below. As they continued to walk toward the settlement hiding in the valley they noticed that the western wall was black with char. Eerily it sat on the hill, an empty shell of what would have once been an impressive fortress. Despite its apparent emptiness, the group still felt unease as they passed it, as if eyes were watching from the dark windows.

The girl with the dark hair and the big green eyes was especially moved by the ruins, she pulled her cloak tighter around her and found it difficult to pull her eyes away from the dark char marks. When she finally broke her gaze from it she turned eyes to the summit of the southern hill, where her companions were already looking, it lay much farther west. But even from the distance they could make out a hunched shape with a tall tower rising up from the middle of it. Flecks of red sky could be seen through the tower and spoke of its ruined state as well.

Moving forward they kept their attention on the settlement. The rifle wielder, having the most knowledge on what might lay before them, commented that this might be Cherish Valley. While the tall elf noted that there seemed to be little worth cherishing here as she curled her lip slightly. This brought about small laughter, but it easily got lost on the rocky hills that surrounded them.

Ahead a wooden sign had been thrust into the ground, but it was too dark and too far off to see if anything was written on it yet. But the buildings ahead started to take shape. The first could be best described as a compound. The muddy river dipped under an arch in the high wall that surrounded it. Every now and then something moved atop that wall.

Peeking out from behind the compound wall were more buildings, the tallest of which reached a height of two stories, while most were squat little huts. The spread was actually surprising, especially to the travelers who had spent the last month passing over a largely deserted mountain range. There were probably a hundred or more buildings that could be seen, and most even appeared to be laid out in lines, as if there were streets between them.

Suddenly the sign that had seemed like a small mile maker in front of them was beside them. It was a crude wooden sign with ‘Chairish Valle’ scrawled across it in chipping white paint. They had made it, but this was just the beginning of their journey, and what lay ahead was just as mysterious as those hollowed out castles.

Not long after they had passed the sign the compound reared itself to their right. The river disappeared under the arch on its far side, and disappeared from sight altogether. On the other side of the compound a dry river bed seemed to sneak out from under the wall and rushed toward the huddle of buildings beyond. The walls were made of reddish stone and stood at least three stories tall. The movement seen before proved to be guards pacing the top of the walls, their heads bobbing over the edge and peering down at the travelers now and then. Torches flickered from the watch ledge, in slotted windows running the length of the walls, and astride the massive doors that pierced one wall. At the doors the path they were on split and a well tended branch of it led straight up to them. Each of the wooden doors had a ‘S’ carved deeply in it, where such large amounts of what looked like oak had been found truly was a mystery. A small niche in the left hand door suggested that a guard stood on the other side to watch the door and let in those authorized to do so. Even at this late hour, with the sun dipping down behind the distant hill with its solitary tower and leaving the sky to fade from blood red to black, there were noises from inside the compound. Loud bangs, chains rattling, hot bursts of what could be steam, shouts and other muffled noises. Pillows of thin white clouds drifted over the walls as the steam like noises hit the air.

Whispered thoughts flittered among the travelers as they passed as to what the compound was for. The construction of the compound caught the eye of the Halfling, glancing around at the barren surroundings he wondered out loud where the wood for the doors had come from. But none dared to approach it.

Just as soon they were in the town. The town was laid out in streets, small dusty streets that did not appear to have names branched out off the Way of the Forsaken. Randomly selecting one of them they wandered the streets. Few people moved on the street, and those that did cast the group suspicious looks and moved to the other side of the street before hurrying on their way. Up the street though candle light spilled from one of the taller buildings out onto the street and sounds common with a bar could be heard. Nodding to each other the group headed that way.

The inn stood back a bit from the road, allowing for the patio that stuck out from the first floor. The patio was little more than a wooden platform in the dust. Beams rose from it’s corners and were topped by other beams. Weathered canvas nailed to the beams gave the patio a roof. Rolls of canvas at the edge of the roof could easily be untied to give the patio walls. Circular tables were spread out over the platform, a metal lantern on each lit the place up warmly. Sitting in the mismatched chairs were a handful of patrons, drinking, playing cards, laughing at each other. Everything, including the patrons, seemed covered in a layer of fine dirt, likely the food was as well.

Above the patio windows looked down on the street, thin curtains blowing in a soft breeze. Placed perfectly around them was a black dragon painted across the pale planks. Under the red flash of flame that escaped from his lips was written ‘Midnite Dragon’.
As the travelers approached a female dwarf rose from one of the tables and came to the edge of the patio. She grinned a toothless smile and waved her hand at them. Her appearance stopped the group for a moment, none had ever seen a dwarf quiet like her before. The satin bright purple gown she wore was trimmed in black lace, it also had been worn everyday since it appeared in her wardrobe and it showed in loose hems, torn lace, and stains of unknown origin. Though toothless her mouth was ringed in heavy red lipstick, dark lines were drawn around her eyes but the makeup had spread out in spidery veins through her crow’s feet. She propped a hand that was covered in a fingerless black glove on her hip and greeted them.

“Welcome Pilgrims, yer welcome to come up, but I’ll warn you, gotta pay –before- I’ll bring you yer drink,” and she laughed heartily into the night.

((Same as the teaser posted in Recruitment, just added in the characters playing, I'll open this up to everyone as soon as I get all those sheets. Welcome!))

Alright ladies and gents...
I've got all but one sheet and I've been assured it is coming soon. As soon as it appear in my box I'll get this game started.

In the meanwhile I've updated the roster on the first page, but there is real basic material there.

This group has been traveling together for about a month now. I'm leaving it up to you how much you wish to reveal to your companions about your history, motivations for going west etc...

So if you want to post up what your fellow travelers would know about your character as of now that would be good. And of course if you wish to add a good description of what they look like, what they are wearing etc that couldn't hurt either.

Topic: Despair Q&A
Subject: Drum roll please...

Despair no longer, the answers have come¡K

Okay here are the adjustments I am making to Witchcraft for the purposes of this game:

1. Please buy all character stats according to what the book allows for the character type you have chosen with the following two exceptions:

Race
I am allowing for players to select a race other than human if they desire.

For humans, you may add one point to any attribute you would like.
For elves, you may add one point to perception (elves can see and hear better than any other race).
For Halflings, you may add one point to dexterity (they are bouncy little creatures)
For dwarfs, you may add one point to strength (since they are like short squat little brick walls)
For Half-elves, you may add one point to knowledge (the dual heritage comes with a wealth of information)
If you want to play something not on that list please contact me.

Divine Powers
You may buy divine powers, but as noted previously the Gods are rather distant, especially in Despair (well there are some Gods that are reachable in Despair but somehow I doubt you will be calling on them), so getting them is going to take more work.

To adjust for this all divine powers will be double price, for character creation and for purchasing during game play as well.

2. Associations are not necessary. Only worry about them if you have found an association that really has called out to you, and make adjustments to fit your background as you feel fit. I¡¦m not currently that concerned with people being of a certain group, your ties would probably not be that strong with them at any rate as you¡¦ve gone on your own to Despair without any comrades from your group¡K

3. Equipment, this is where the fun comes in. I¡¦m not allowing for any increase in character points save for the race attribute adjustment mentioned above and the main reason for that is that I¡¦m going to be very liberal with equipment options for you.

The main rule I have is¡K anything pre Civil War is game. And that is world wide, and even dips into fantasy realms. If the technology was around prior to the American Civil War, it¡¦s available.

Witchcraft does not have price lists, and I¡¦m not going to create any, nor give you starting wealth, you can buy your economic status as one of the advantage/disadvantages as you wish.

That being said¡K have as much or as little as you wish, but keep reality in mind.

Anything you have at this point you have dragged across the mountains with you (and these are some treacherous mountains).

There is no paper money system in Despair (who would govern it?) so wealth is best transported in the shape of something shiny, but again you gotta lug the shinies around with you and robbery is a common thing out west.

You are going into a world of chaos, and you all knew that, I pray to the distant Gods that you have come prepared.

Also of note, Despair consists mainly of desert land, it¡¦s hot, it¡¦s dry, it¡¦s dusty. A suit of full plate metal might not be such a good idea.

Your enemies might not always be fleshy things either. Bullets work great on coyotes, but ghosts are another thing, and so is a dust storm. You¡¦ve been living in the wild up until this point, and might be in the future again (although currently you are in Cherish Valley and have the opportunity to acquire more supplies).

So there are¡K bring what you think will keep you alive. If there are any questions please feel free to ask. (so Loki¡K the answer is yes, strap the guns to your whole body and wear armor if you like )

*I know it will come up¡K so being proactive here. There was not any bullet proof armor pre Civil War that I know of. But yes I¡¦ll allow Mithreal (I probably murdered the spelling of that). Give it the same stats as the lowest level of bullet proof armor in the book (sorry don¡¦t have the book on me at the moment to see what that is). Of course your enemies may have it as well¡K ƒº

I think that covers most of it, when you figure out what I forgot let me know.

I¡¦ll be awaiting the final sheets, and so will the horrors of Despair!

M.

Topic: Despair Q&A
Subject: Races

I am going to allow the basic fantasy races: Human, dwarf, elven, halfling, half-elf (and if you have another idea let me know).
I'm thinking of giving each race a bonus to an attribute that makes sense for the race but haven't worked out which ones get what, but probably just one point to add to the attribute beyond what you put in.
So at this point just note what race they are and then we can adjust some stats later this week.

Glad to hear you are still interested, that's three.

I'm working up some fun things for you guys to kill too

Huh... thought you would have wanted to go with someone with Sight abilities... but mundane would give you more points to go into her arts...

Well so far it sounds like it is okay to change the format here.

If you want to start building characters that is fine, I might come up with a few point adjustments from what is in the book, but nothing huge I don't think, as I look into a little deeper just as forewarning...

Subject: Sincerest Appologies

I'm dreadfully sorry, Christmas ended up taking up way more of my time than I had expected and so has the beginning of the year. Things are slowly calming down around here.

I have not had much of a chance to take a good look at any of the sheets I have gotten from you, nor a chance to work up those first encounters for this game.

However... I wanted to ask a question and see what people thought of it. I have been thinking of working this up as a tabletop as well for some of my friends, and while doing that I have come to the conclusion that it would be easier to run this world in a slightly adjusted version of Witchcraft instead of 4e... the biggest adjustments I've thought up thus far (and the idea only struck me two days ago so I'll still hashing some details out) would be eliminating the more modern equipment/skills (computers, cars, machine guns etc), get rid of the bast, allow people to choose races other than human, and have some kind of adjustment to how many points could go into divine inspiration spells since the Gods are so far removed from Despair...

I just really have come to like the Witchcraft system, know it better than 4e to run a game in, and think that it might work better.

Let me know what you guys think... I can still make either work... and again sorry for dissapearing!
