Topic: Required Viewing: A discussion of films
Subject: Movie Geek

Well I've seen 13 movies off the list... and I'm willing to bet my husband has seen the other seven that I haven't (between the two of us we are a super geek). But then again I am also a BIG movie buff and have seen/own a ton of other movies as well.

But I think the real issue with this list is is that the definition of 'geek' is not really given and is a difficult thing to peg down. There are lots of different kinds of 'Geeks' out there really.

This list seemed a little more geared toward 'computer/scifi geeks'

I know that for a group such as ourselves I would have more more fantasy/Medieval films.

Men in Tights
Robin Hood (Kevin Costner)
Rob Roy
How to Train your Dragon
Princess Bride

Then, like someone mentioned earlier, there are more adventure geeks. And I'll put their two recommendations here as they were excellent:

Indiana Jones
The Mummy
Boondock Saints
Die Hard
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Fight Club

And of course there are also comic book geeks and all the comic book movies are too many to mention here but I will plug my favorite - Hellboy because I can.

And you certainly can't leave out some of the Scifi classics not listed on the boardgamegeeks list such as Tremors...

Geekdom has many faces, and in the end you really have to tailor your own 'must see movie list' to go with what you and your friends are constantly quoting and referencing while gathered in some geeky social situation

Subject: Eve?

The man shook his head, "I'm not with anyone, officially.”

Eve stared at him critically and decided that he was telling the truth, but that did not make him completely harmless. So while her grip loosened slightly on the night stick it was still ready to complete a damaging swing if needed.

“The only thing I pay attention to is what my my clients assign to me. In some circumstances, it's a personal matter, particularly when it comes to missing people..."

Ha! Missing people… that’s right I’m missing, and I intend for it to stay that way…

He turned the laptop, holding it out for Eve to see, the text size large enough for her to read it without getting too close, "This is you, isn't it?"

However, the screen has a different story. It is a text document, rather than a website.

Name: Evelyn Meadows
Birthplace: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
No picture available
The date of birth is Eve's own, but the rest of the information is clearly unrelated to her life as Cheryl.

"If this is you," The man said carefully, "Then you are the beneficiary of my client. If it is not you, then I will apologize for taking up your time and the mistaken identity."

The screen did not have on it what she had expected it to. Above anything else she had expected one of the police flyers with her mug shot on it. The sheer simplicity of the text document left her blinking for a moment, when she read over the first few lines she sighed in relief. Except for the birthday the information had nothing to do with her. Eve Handle had no background, and Cheryl West had never been to Canada, had never been to or done any of the things this Evelyn Meadow’s had.

Eve shook her head, the tension melting out of her shoulders as she did. “Not me. Never even been to Canada, and the name’s Eve, just Eve, Handle…”

She took a step backwards toward her room, the hand holding the night stick falling casually to her side as she did.

Subject: Knowing who I am can get you killed...

She had barely gotten the needle threaded when a knock at the door caused her head to jerk upwards.

A moment later the voice of Mr. Laptop spoke respectfully through the door, "Miss, are you awake?"

So polite… I know a prison guard or two who could learn a lesson from this guy…

“Yeah… just a second…” the needle found a temporary home in the bedding and she quickly slipped the torn jeans back on before going to the door. She released the lock and opened it with one hand, the other concealing the night club behind her back, this woman would not take any chances no matter how polite the man on the other side of the door sounded.

Through a lock of her Kool-aid red hair she eyed the man so addicted to his laptop that he was typing on it standing in front of her door, “Yes?”

"It is not my business why, but..." He pauses a moment, his eyes slightly distant, before he nods, "I believe you may be the beneficiary of one of my clients..."

Immediately she began to feel her heart race. He knows who I am… her head filled with a line of curses. Seconds ticked by as she stared intently at him, color rising in her cheeks as she tried to get a firm grip on the situation. Finally she shoved the curses to the back of her thoughts and let her eyes dart up and down the hallway, making sure they were alone.

When all seemed clear she stepped out into the hall, moving closer to him as her hand gripped the night stick readying it for a blow if it was needed.

“Who are you? Who are you with? Police? FBI? US Marshalls perhaps? You have to tell me… I’m fully aware of my rights and you and I know that my lawyer screaming ‘entrapment’ isn’t going to make whatever department you are with look good…” she said firmly, controlling her desire to rap the man in the temple with the club until after he answered only by counting her own heartbeats.

((Well I'd enjoy this picking back up... couldn't help but to work up a response to Mr. Laptop. ))

I have a whole photo album full of them anyway.

Ohh... and it would be great if I could have these in by the 22nd (short notice I know but you all can handle it) and there will be a word limit of 1000 words or less.

Anything over 1000 words might get a visit from Meri's chainsaw...

Well I am going to try to put together a quick edition of the RDInnsider after several months of letting it lag.

In honor of this season I was wondering if anyone out there had any scary short stories, excerpts or poetry that they would like to share.

If you have something that you think would be fitting please send it over to me via PM.

Happy Halloween!!

Vergal Sea Port

His grey robes and quiet demeanor had earned him the name ‘Mouse’ but he had always felt that was not really the best fit. ‘Rat’ might have been more appropriate, or perhaps ‘Eel’ but ‘Mouse’ it was. It worked better than his real name.

His mother would have been mortified if her son’s actions had been attached to the family name in any way. At times, however, he secretly contemplated doing just that, if only to take her closer to the edge of her grave.

Right now though his mother was far from his thoughts. Instead he was focused entirely on the woman who called this wretched little space her home. The ‘Wharf Witch’ as she was called. Success in Drasnia usually demanded more than simple magical ability. Only a few could rise up out of the sludge due to their arcane skills. Brute force, the correct friends and laying claim to very few moral hang ups usually could overpower even skilled magicians. His own climb had been tenuous, and he had started several rungs higher than this witch. Yet he had watched her begin her ascent. If anyone else in Drasnia was capable of being an adversary to him it was this woman.

I wonder if she recognizes that… he thought to himself, Well… let’s find out.

He brushed the canvas flap covering the door and stepped inside the little apartment with the gentle rush of bells following him. All night he had stood across the street, waiting for her to return home, but she had not so he knew the place would be empty.

Standing on the threshold of her space he was momentarily overwhelmed by the strength of her presence even when she was not there. Closing his eyes he could smell her as if she stood next to him, the offal of fish with the under tow of brine and caustic salts. Opening them he could almost see her moving about the room, sitting before the loom in the moonlight, sleeping under the coarse covers piled on the floor, rummaging through the odds and ends on the shelves, heating up the coin on the lantern…

The coin…

“And what are you doing here without your mistress?” he cooed at the object that sat quietly atop the lantern.

“She has been strangely distracted, yet more pointedly alert than usual, something is amiss I realize. However to have left you behind she must be greatly out of sorts.” Mouse whispered the words as he stepped across the dusty planks to her bed.

His grey robes spread out over the floor as he crouched down and picked the coin up between his soft fingers. The well worn Bedine symbol flashed briefly at him. “So… where is she? Where is that mistress of yours?”

His thumb eclipsed the oppressive image as his lips whispered a spell into the air.

The world boiled in shades of sanguine. Hot flashes burst from overheated bubbles and threatened to burn him. The thought that this had been a mistake flitted through his mind a moment but then subsided as he noticed the rain begin. Cool white rain poured from above. Exasperated sizzles erupted from the world as they cooled from the sweet honey and milk rain. Every drop mingled with the heavy red and soon the world was melting in shades of pink. It melted and ran through the cobblestone streets toward a grate in the middle of the road. Eagerly he followed it and peered down through the wrought iron bars.

Below him the witch lay in a room made of stone. The perfect lines of her body were only barely covered by a thin blanket. He took no time in admiring them though, instead he took careful inspection of the figure they were hugged closely against. There was no mistaking the pure alabaster white form that held her close to its chest and ran its fingers through her hair in a most loving fashion.

Mouse shifted in his surprise, a rock grinding against the metal edge of the grate as he did. The assassins’ twin moon eyes rose up from the witch and fixed on Mouse even as his arms wrapped tighter around the woman.

The coin dropped to the floor. Mouse did not seem to notice this. He stared distantly at the large tapestry that rose over the witch’s bed with a smirk on his lips.

“So… that is where you have been my little fishy friend…”

The smirk broke into a grin and he began laughing.
