Doc wondered what Morrigu meant by being a Raven over a Spider; he would have to observe the subject further to see any possible mutations or anthropomorphic magics which may adapt her to the avian species.

Klik projected his thoughts aloud: "Spider or Raven, you are our companion, and while I may not detest the surface elves as your blood war calls for, I cannot discount that aiding them is dangerous and in my case, beyond me without great personal risk as I lack sufficient means to combat them from a safe distance."

He turned to survey the elves and their struggle, before speaking once more.

"I know some of your hearts call to aid others, and I applaud the moral aspirations which beat within your chests; but those elves today, are just one of many reminders that this life is a fragile thing we cling to. If you can aid them do so, but do not trade the threat to one group to another on a whim of grandeur. There will be many dangers before our trek is over, and if we are unprepared, we could find ourselves in a similar situation as those elves below."

(if asked etc, Doc will provide medical aid to any who are brought to him should that be the brazen task someone undertakes, but would from a rational standpoint agree with leaving the elves is a wiser course. From a Alignment standpoint, his deity is the god of endurance, martyrdom, perseverance, and suffering. So in this case he'll pray for their endurance and perseverance but he's not in a position where martyrdom and taking their place is an option lol.)

Doc 'cant' help from range without giving up knowledge of outlawed divine magics (or close scrutiny that he is somehow empowered by the God-King thus empowering the falsehood that he is truly a "God)"
I simply lack ranged attacks and it's too early to give that info up.

As for travelling... Doc's ok with making perception checks or doing the mapping if someone else will do the perception checks.. he's a nomadic race, who already mentioned annotating the travels at night, so why not keep a map to correlate with his writings... seems like something he'd do.

And...for now.... need to post in game!.. *dashes off*

but as I said Doc is rational... it doesn't befit us to risk too much at the hands of adversaries at this stage in the game, and given peoples inventories.... and the 'reluctance of openly casting spells' especially divine spells apparently, that leaves me with one ranged throwing star-esque attack... which would do little, and we actually lack alot of long range options... So throw Doc up with Morrigu and ochitt in this instance.. It's not a 'he doesnt wish to help' he just doesnt think he 'can' be of help without jeopardizing more lives than those he could potentially save at this point..

I'm down for moving on and offering up a prayer and adding in some sort of .. 'this is reality, and reality is harsh' type dialogue.. too tired ot do proper in game post justice atm.. but will post before tomorrow's end.

I'm inclined to agree with Nomad's assessment. Doc's not one for pointless loss of life. If they are trying to retreat maybe we can at least give the zombies something else to think about. Doc can sacred flame them to draw fire, and it's multiple rounds of free range attacks before the zombies would ever make it into range for actual combat. We should be easily able to use the range / height advantage to at least give the three remaining elves some breathing room if we assist.

I'm good with having Doc cast sacred flame since arrows had little effect. It's radiant damage so it should have some degree of potential better success.

It should be noted too if my math's correct. some of us will be out of survival rations and if not now then soon. It may be tactically sound to try and scavenge extra's from the fallen or those we save as compensation.

Subject: pace of the game

Maybe it's because I used to post 2-3 times a week dependent on player pace (I had no life outside RDINN when I was a MOD here many years ago lol), and because my other games are now live, it does feel like it's a bit slow to me. That comes with play by post to be fair,(but real life delays and such draw out the 1 post / week to 1 post / 2+weeks etc and it sets the start of a new game off to a crawl) but I agree with some of the statements made by the others, and sometimes, 'taking the reigns' with creative licencing to move things along is well within the DM's capable hands.

Given the scenario presented to us and the information posted in game by those thus far, I'd interpret it thus:

The party spends the next minute gauging the battle from the benefit of their height and distance, and X Y or Z happens.. In the same post, given that only Morrigu was adamantly opposed to helping, two seemed to want to help, and Ochit and Doc while tentative had agreed to help if the others did, depending on X Y Z that happened, move the pace along into either joining the fray, or ignoring it and moving on to the next leg of the journey.

What play by post allows that playing live does not is the advantage of backposting and interactions beyond the immediate breadth of the post at hand.

Just my 2 cents. Please don't take them negatively because they are meant to be constructive and not in any way imply I'm not enjoying this game because I am!

I feel like Doc will be played out as very level headed, rational, and poignant. Almost.. 'spock' like in a manner. He's not above helping the elves provided more good than risk comes of it. perhaps we can save them then dissuade them from continuing, and pick up a few extra survival days or supplies from them as they head on back, aware of their ill equipped nature for this task.

As for morrigu.. he's not above playing to her racial stereotype to get her to perhaps assist the group, nor is he above calling himself 'lesser' for the sake of unity. words mean little to the Kreen.

Subject: Doctor's moral compass

Three days the small group of would be adventurers traveled through the sweltering heat of the day and dreadfully cold nights. Hours upon hours were spent marching in near silence; a feat Klik thought highly unnatural for such races prone to gossip and storytelling. The silence of the sand was only rarely disturbed by the outspoken irritation of Morrigu and the heavy footfalls of feet through sand and shale.

Only Reynard broke the dreadful monotony of the trek as he neared and inquired as to Klik's training.

Turning to the heavily armored man Klik focused his thoughts and transmitted them telepathically.

When the Sorcerer King's minions came upon my clutch, the warriors of my tribe thought little of the forces which sought our lands for the Boneyard we nested by. The ancient graveyard is a host to centuries of marvelous creature and tale alike, where grand beast, and Kreen warrior alike are laid to rest to forever be remembered as the sun bleaches bone and immortalizes the body as the spirit flies free. What we deemed as sacrament, the Templar's deigned valuable resources for furthering their military campaigns. Needless to say diplomatic resolutions are not a Kreen's strong point when dealing with other races, and combat quickly ensued. Much blood was shed, and much valor gained for warrior's on both sides, but what Kreen's have in abundance in size or vigor, The Sorcerer King matched with waves upon waves of sacrificial pawns. For every Kreen that fell, five humans or their kind met an end, but endlessly they came, well into the night, and into the next morning still until eventually the clutch was reduced to but a few survivors clinging to life, ideal, and perhaps... foolish pride.

Klik absentmindedly fingered the long blood hued ribbon wrapped around his secondary right appendage. He paused for a moment as though reflecting upon that memory, and then continued.

When the Templar's came upon me, I was busy tending to the wounded, both Kreen, and invader alike, staunching the flow of death wherever I could. Honor in battle deserved a clean end, not at the hands of infection and lingering pain. My hands worked tirelessly with scalpel and bandage, ointment and salve to spare the dying, and for some reason the commander of that expeditionary force saw value in Kreen medicine and gave me a choice. To serve under the God-King and learn the 'superior spirit of man' or die in the sand like the rest of the 'roaches'. I can tell you now that then and there I realized that pride alone would not save those dying around me, and if being a Templar would give me the tools with which to save more lives, and perhaps learn the ways of you foreigners enough to prevent future needless bloodshed, then my choice was clear. It was soon after I began training as a Medic in the order. It took years before I was forgotten as a drafted casualty of war, and was simply another man behind the God-King. Fortunately, your kinds memories are short, and paperwork long, and so while one station believes I'm part of one detachment, and another believes I should be delivering supplies with convoys, I am free to travel and put to use the skills I've been taught, both Kreen and man.

Klik fingered the ribbon some more before tightly securing it around his arm once more.

There is another, more spiritual reason I wander the path I do, but these strangers, these, Godless souls led astray by this Sorcerer-King, are not yet trusted enough to know the truth.. but then again is anyone on this rock capable of comprehending they are sheep to a false shepherd? Klik thought to himself as he continued on their way.

~*~*~*~*~

Eventually, the group cleared a dune of sand and their vision of the landscape under the sun soaked sky was met with what their ears had gleaned of shortly before; combat. It looked as though a small group of elves were squaring off against a superior number of shambling rickety beings. It was discussed by various members of the group what course of action should be taken, and opinions varied from assistance, to avoidance, and each had it's own merit.

Klik 'voiced' his opinion to the group.
It would be folly to expend too many resources at the behest of rivals; but on the other hand knowledge is power as they say, and the more we know about potential adversaries the better prepared we can be in the future. -There was something in the way he expressed his statement that felt as though he was broadly covering both the unknown entities AND the elven company themselves.-

If we are to render them assistance, let it be done with minimal danger to ourselves, and if they accept our aid, let it be known that it comes with a cost, as does everything in life.

Turning to Morrigu he spoke softly, though openly. I understand hatred; a frail, humanoid emotion used to shelter weakness behind a veil of anger. I am led to believe you Ilythiri are above such base emotional crutches. That as superior Elven bloodlines, it is more in your nature to evoke awe at your beauty and wrath than be driven away by mere words. Would it not be a grand mockery to those elves to be forced to owe you - their better- their very lives? How better to humiliate them than to send them scurrying knowing that each breath they take was granted by your whim? Hrmm.. perhaps my books are mistaken.. I may have to question their authors accuracy

What if Anyone spellcaster or not could permanently expend their Hit die to raise the status of a 5ft area etc?

meaning.. no regaining hp on short rests etc... meaning for most people... a tangible cost to restoring a small piece of the world with their own life energy..

Sorta a belief that everything's connected etc.

meaning if Klik wanted to turn a 5ft piece of defiled land into lush verdant land... it would cost him BOTH of his hit die (healing surges in some other editions) Meaning come short rest he has no 'natural healing'. This preservation lasts until a long rest where you can choose how many hit die to regain / ending/ shortening the radius preserved to enforce the land of the dark suns ever vile encroachment.

This would fight the 'it's so easy to make permanent happy places' but allows for maybe sects of druids or what not that do permanently devote part of their lives (literally) to maintaining some small piece of beauty and life in the world.

at 5ft / hit dice.. that means a max level character could only do a 100 ft radius and in most game worlds 20th level anythings are very rare let alone.. good aligned and with the motives to do such a thing.

but it allows for interesting RP options, or a group of say.. I dunno.. 6 adventurers to maybe weigh the odds and with a inspired prayer or somesuch pour their 'essence' into the earth and try and salvage a temporary reprieve.

just thoughts.

Klik's character sheet has him being respectful as far as being a doctor, but he doesn't 'respect' someone unless they are a proven warrior... That being said.

'saving the elves' is an affront to their warrior spirit. They should be able to handle it, or flee, regroup, or fail and let the sands claim them. we're on a time limit and this is an advantage to move forward at least putting one group behind us.

I'll post in game these thoughts (as well as backposting for the conversation about templar training) when I have time this is rushed at work.

Preservers:

Maybe make it almost like a Channel divinity ability. but not bound to Clerics... this is just a ... theorycraft..

*Preservation*
The spellcaster calls upon their inner reserves to invigorate the ground around them, stemming off defiled ground and returning life to once barren lands.

As a bonus action, this ability will raise the status of land around the caster by one level. Defiled will become neutral, Neutral will become verdant etc. This field of preservation will grow at a radius of 5ft / three caster levels to reflect their growing reserves as they get stronger.

The spellcaster is able to affect his/her spell with this ability as though it were a metamagic. Affecting the ground and gaining it's equivalent bonus while casting a spell.

A spell caster may use this ability once / spell casting ability modifier / short/long rest. (for Klik for example it would be 3 with a 16 wisdom)

Doc Klik settled his pack by the dune that they would seek shelter from the elements behind. He pulled forth both of his shields from his arms, wrapped his blanket around one, then the other and dug them into the dune, providing additional cover from the winds with an angled lean-to that would let most of the irritants of the desert drift over the resting party.

He watched as other's prepared a small campfire, and as they did so he dug out small burrows into the sand within which bedrolls could be set.

As people inquired about who would take watch, Klik turned, leaning on his native Gythka; whose spiked polearm drifted through the sand leaving intricate patterns and strange markings, many of which were quickly erased by the shifting sands.

Projecting his mind to those gathered he spoke
"Rest easy, I will keep watch as a shepherd does their flock. I need not sleep as you do, and will take the time to prepare for the morrow, and perhaps annotate our travels."

Given their pre-adventure apt for conflict, Klik figured these early hours of the evening may be his only quiet time to reflect in the days ahead, and he had no qualms with dutifully putting the wasteful 'sleep' other creatures needed to more productive uses.

(Easy DM references) Passive Perception 15, Active Perception (+5), Darkvision 60ft, Stealth Checks while on watch (+5)

During the course of the night (if nothing happens) Doc will pray for the following new spells (If interrupted I'll use the current spell list)

Cure Wounds
Guiding Bolt
Shield of Faith
Bless
Detect Poison and Disease

and not waiting another week for an update in interest of 'convincing' morrigu.

If 5/6 people are ready to move out. Let's face it given the time limit the5 people would probably just go with or without the 'crazy drow with schizophrenia' or whatever she has.

Now, from an OOC perspective we dont wanna do that. Can it not be said that we convince her and 'backpost' after the update' about what was said / her reactions to get this little adventure moving.

Doc has little issue with walking near her holding his shields up like umbrellas for shade. Gives him a closer chance to inspect the subject of everyone's curiosity lol. Given my sheer size difference on her and two shields I should be able to 'although looking silly' provide quite a bit of cover for our solar afflicted she-witch.

while being a drow would have it's penalties during the day. Waiting to night has more immediate plausible negatives... the foremost being.. 'hours of wasted time to let others get ahead of us'.

So that being taken into consideration Doc would say go by day. Morrigu can stand in Ochit's shade lol.

Also.. yes. Doc was purposely causing attention away from the confrontation in a hopes to alleviate some tension in the room.

Yes his first comment was only to the merchant and second was a broad general address to the room as a whole. can only communicate with those I have visual Line of sight on, it would have come across almost like a nagging whisper at the back of everyone's minds. Not forceful, but present. I view his telepathy when used in a broad general sense like when you're brain overhears the dozens of tidbits you do everyday. You don't really pay attention to it in detail but something catches your attention enough to potentially try to tune in to what's said.. like in a busy work environment when someone calls your name it triggers attention even though it's not forceful.

Doc sat in the corner minding his own when their newfound companion of obsidian complexion found herself bereft of manners at the hand of one merchant. At his boisterous response the tension within the merchant center grew tangibly thicker as those still around tensed up at the vocal discontent.

Doc noticed Ochit square up to defend the woman, and Trossach moved away from the table as well. While Doc did not think this would escalate to a primitive quarrel answered with fisticuffs, he didn't want to have to worry about patching up his party before the adventure even begun.

Focusing on the merchant first, Doc telepathically relayed Calm yourself good peddler. This place is crawling with Templar's and your lack of professionalism will only cost you time in the brig, cutting into your bottom line if this escalates.

Turning his attention to Morrigu, Doc thought to try and calm her down as well, but somehow thought another invasion of her mind in an already stressful situation might not be a wise decision. Instead he stood up and knocked the table over in an overly dramatic fashion spilling his water across the floor and his tankard to clatter next to the thud of wood on wood.

Taking any attention his actions have drawn, Doc addresses the room generically.

Pardon my clumsiness. My extra appendages sometimes get caught on things... allow me to clean it up

With that Doc will flip the table back up and mop up his spill with part of his apron.

it's just the templar background was the only background from what I recall that said GP instead of CP. I assumed it was a 'perk' for being under the God King's employ.

The world essentially runs on 'ceramic pieces' CP while the average person survives on ceramic bits (bt) Meaning the majority of people live on silvers / week like in a typical d&D universe economy.

If the Book you gave us was wrong or misprinted let me know and I'll edit my post. Otherwise. Klik started with effectively 1500 CP (in the 15 GP the book states) and will primarily just use to to benefit the group on the down low.

Klik meandered into the tavern and inn, currently occupied by provisioners and merchants as groups stocked up for their journey towards the ruins. It appeared as though the flurry of immediate necessity had inflated the price of survival packs; and with nary an attempt to hide their greed the merchant's grins showed their enthusiasm at benefiting from the Templar's decree.

Three days should cover the essentials for travels, but Klik was a wary sort. They would be travelling into unknown ruins, and with that, there were variables outside the kreen's control. To compensate, Klik waited until the others had purchased their provisions, and when the crowd thinned, approached the merchant he deemed the least likely to cheat him. (Insight) Approaching the merchant Klik will be sure to get the person's name.

Still bearing the markings of the Templars upon his armor, he had no qualms with utilizing what authority the association provided, and with that retrieved his coin and tried to haggle the merchant down to 2cp / survival day, reminding him through telepathy the graciousness Templars are apt to reciprocate after providing such protection for merchants to safely peddle their wares; that a strong working relationship could see many more customer's choosing his stand above others if turned by the word of a respectable doctor and Templar affiliate toward such a quality salesman. (scratch the antitoxin no way I can afford 50cp worth)

(if it fails he'll pay the 3cp / and get 4 days worth. (12cp) if he succeeds' he'll get four for 8cp and give him an extra in the interest of continued relations. (9cp)

With rations procured, Klik answered Trossach plainly. With pack full and coin purse empty, I see little more I can do but ready to depart.

I know we're not at level 4 yet, but I'm seriously thinking about taking the 'healer feat' provided you perhaps allow Chris Perkin's (the lead content director for D&D / wizards of the coasts house rule errata as currently 'medicine as a skill, healer as a feat and healer's kits' are pretty useless when a simple 'spare the dying cantrip' fixes everything..

This is His ruling and if allowed is something (unless game direction changes his progression in relation to roleplay I'd be interested in taking.

Medicine. A Wisdom (Medicine) check lets you try to stabilize a dying companion, evaluate others wounds, diagnose illnesses, treat poisoned or diseased creatures, and examine corpses in order determine the cause of death.
With a successful Wisdom (Medicine) check you can stabilize a dying character at 0 hit points.
Medicine may also be used to provide long-term care to poisoned or diseased creatures. When a poisoned or diseased creature is cared for by someone proficient in the Medicine skill, they make their recuperation saving throws (see Downtime: Recuperating on page 187 of the Player's Handbook) with advantage.

Healer's Kit. This kit is a leather pouch containing bandages, salves, and splints. The kit has ten uses. As an action, you can expend one use of the kit to stabilize a creature that has 0 hit points, without needing to make a Wisdom (Medicine) check.
If you expend one use of a healer's kit to treat a poisoned or diseased creature, you gain advantage on your Wisdom (Medicine) check.

Healer Feat:
You are an able physician, allowing you to mend wounds quickly and get your allies back in the fight.
You gain the following benefits:
• You have advantage on all Wisdom (Medicine) checks.
• When you use a healer's kit to stabilize a dying creature, that creature also regains 1d6+4 hit points.
• As an action, you can spend one use of a healer's kit to tend to a creature and restore 1d6 + 4 hit
points to it, plus additional hit points equal to the creature's maximum number of Hit Dice. The creature can't regain hit points from this feat again until it finishes a short or long rest.

trying to embellish the thematic 'healer / medic' portion of the character outside the limitations of . "cast cure wounds" describe miraculous healing lol.
