Subject: Valberg signing in

USS Lewis, en-route to the USS Cerberus 0937-hours

The shuttle flight to the Cerberus was a quiet one. The hum on communications revealed that the ship would be moored a while longer, awaiting a detachment of Romulan Scientists assisting in some capacity as advisors. Why the rigid race of war-mongers was even allowed in the quadrant, let alone near this installation was beyond Karl. It was likely above his pay grade, but his acceptance of the hierarchy of things was likely another reason he had been assigned to this crew. Karl Valberg was a man of action and damn good at what he was there to do. Poking his nose around in everyone else’s affairs typically only served to distract from tasks at hand.

Mind you the aging Lieutenant Commander still kept his bright blue eyes peeled beneath his furrowed brow, his ears to the wall for anything creeping through unofficial channels, and his vigilance honed to the edge of a Batleth, all traits necessary for a survivor of the Cardassian occupation, and in turn, a Starfleet Chief of Security.

Karl’s eyes finished scanning over the service record of Captain MacTavish, and Rrowl, a Kzinti of known valor and distinction whom would serve as his superior heading TAC, of which his department fell under. Valberg had a strict way of running his team, demanded excellence surpassing Starfleet guidelines, and could and had been known to come off as somewhat of a hard-ass. He smiled inwardly noting amendments to Rrowls dossier, and felt the Kzinti wouldn’t find his strict methods too overbearing given the circumstances. Though Starfleet only regulated a 80% score on level 17 difficulty for any member of security, Karl demanded any member on his detail be trained to level 18, and any away member must hold a validated score of at least passing grade at level 20 or higher. Karl still held the Marksman award with a 96% on level 23 in the phaser coarse, which had saved his life more than once. Valberg looked forward into kicking the motley crew into gear as soon as possible. He chuckled out loud at the prospect of his usual casualty rate… How many will request reassignment before we even reach DS9 I wonder?

Karl was pulled from his brief reverie as the helmsman hailed the Cerberus, and shortly thereafter was granted permission for Karl to beam aboard.

“Good luck sir” Ensign Jenkins said with an assertive nod.

“Luck is for the unskilled or unprepared Ensign.” With that Karl Valberg, along with his equipment disappeared in a beam of blue-white light.

USS Cerberus -0945

“Lieutenant Commander Karl Valberg, reporting in.”

“Good to have you aboard sir.” Came the reply of the transporter engineer.” Ensign McCrery here will show you to your quarters.”

Karl turned to regard the freckle faced, and fiery red haired ensign, who looked young enough to be his daughter, her features yet unmarred by the terrors of war, or the struggles of survival.

“This way sir,” she directed as they stepped into the corridor. Her voice was thick with and Irish accent and she walked well off to the side of Karl, as though his rank if not size intimidated her.

“I won’t bite”, Karl said with a smile, and Ensign McCrery, Ilene by first name, visible relaxed.

“First stop, quarters to ease the load, then Tactical and the Bridge to get acquainted.”

As he walked he tapped the communicator on his chest. =/\\= Commander Rrowl, and Captain MacTavish, Lieutenant Commander Karl Valberg reporting in a bit early sirs. Looking forward to seeing what his puppy’s got behind her wet ears. =/\\=

(I’ll leave it open for Communication, or for Rrowls command to meet him in Transporter Room 2 for the arrival of our ‘guests’.)

Subject: I'm not a Lumberjack...

Karl Valberg paced the corridors of the Promenade as he anxiously awaited word of his shuttle being prepared for departure to SB10 to meet up with his next tour. Apparently, the large man’s reputation in the previous months of the Dominion War had attracted the attention of someone clad in the comforts of the Starfleet hierarchy, for he was to leave DS9 and make his way to rendezvous with both a babe of a ship and a newfound Sheppard to tend to her flock.

The Cerberus eh? Valberg new well of the mythical beast to which the Steamrunner class starship claimed its namesake, the Norseman was well accustomed to the tale of the multi-headed creature of folklore. I can only pray the Captain’s got the nerve to ‘andle such a creature. If not, she’s likely to drag us all down to ‘ell with ‘er.

Valberg paced, his wide shoulders straining against the gold uniform which hugged his muscular frame. At 6’5, some two-hundred pounds, and bearing the clear bloodline of the Norwegians in his crystal blue eyes and clean cropped blonde mustache and beard, he had grown accustomed to the chidings of those he passed regarding Paul Bunyan, or more crude rumors that he bore Klingon blood coursing through his arctic veins. His face was brazen and steel cast, his jaw line straight and angular, his arms and legs much like some Austrian bodybuilders. In fact, when one looked at Karl Valberg, one would expect to see him wrestling bears, or bouncing some seedy club rather than head a security detail. The intelligence that lay hidden behind the large mans eyes was startling to many, especially his family back home whom he hadn’t heard from in almost a year, since they refused to use anything but the antiquated traditional forms of communication.

At 37 however, Karl could still outfight crewmen half his age, (and did frequently) whenever he managed to steel away on the holodeck for a spell. Karl grinned as he paced towards the loading docks, he’d miss his spars with his favourite rival, Worf; The Klingon and him had sparred numerous times, and more than once needed a visit to the infirmary for momentary clean ups before returning to duty, much to the good doctor’s dismay.

As Karl made his way to the bay, his attention lay focused on the relatively incomplete dossier of personnel that would be assigned to the Cerberus. A complete lack of mission details and further lack of statistical information regarding the Cerberus’ compliments had him wondering if he was being sent away from battle, from the front lines where he’d been since the war began. Me body’s grown accustomed to war as of late, if they think I’m nearing the end of my prowess they’ll need think again.

Where others see the ‘hill as a daunting reflection of age, Karl Valberg saw it merely as another obstacle with which to barrel over and leave crumbled behind him. The thought of possibly being removed from battle due to his recent injuries angered him, a scowl involuntarily crossing his normally stoic expression. He still bore the reminder of the twin Cardassian blaster which had struck him as he shielded a door while others were being evacuated. Everytime he moved he felt the flare of pain in his shoulder and lower right back, and remembered also he owed his life to the ensign Rachel Duncart, who thought to pull his crumpled body into the shuttle just as it was jettisoned from the RMF-15 outpost even as it exploded around them.

The scowl worn unbeknownst to him was a clear warning sign to others, as civilians and crewman alike seemed to give him a wider birth than usual. He slammed his weathered hands against the access panel to the loading dock, and nearly bowled over a couple merchants carrying a rather expensive case of Klausian brandy off and arriving frigate.

Karl hadn’t needed to leave early for SB10, the Cerberus was supposed to return to DS9 in the near future anyways, but having been reduced from Chief of Security to Senior Security Officer with the arrival of Odo some month’s prior, the large man had yearned to return to a post where he was in a position to lead once more. Odo, for all his guile and wisdom kept behind that blank expression, always left Karl feeling on edge. He was one of -the hundred- after all, and linked to the founders. While he didn’t doubt his loyalty to DS9, the humanity in Karl left him unsettled with having a Changeling in charge of the stations internal affairs.

--------------
As the shuttle bay doors closed and the small vessel left port, Karl could only watch out the view screen before him the remnants of DS9 fade behind him, and turned his attention to the helmsman. “Get me to Starbase 10 as fast as this bolt bucket will fly, I don’t want to miss their departure.”

“Yes sir, right away sir.” Came the curt reply from the ensign. Looked fresh out of the academy he did, and Karl knew that with the significant casualties this war had wrought, Starfleet pups had been forced to leave the security of the den far sooner than he deigned them ready too. Karl looked at the Batleth which lay in a case at his feet. It had been a present from Worf after they had narrowly survived an away mission together some months prior, where Karl had been forced to wield the strange weapon, in a battle for survival and had shown unexpected finesse and skill with the foreign blade. He would miss Worf, Rachel and the few others he had befriended. To Karl’s simple logic however it meant only one thing. Completing the mission and staying alive long enough to visit them again. He still owed Worf another spar, and Rachel, he had only just begun to repay for all he owed her. Were she but a little older, nay her a little younger, perhaps things would have been different between the two of them… perhaps.

Accessing the communications terminal, Karl Valberg sent notice to SB10, and the Cerberus that he’d be there for the requested 0900 sign in, though he wasn’t expected until they reached DS9 some days later. He’d want all the time he could have to ship shape the crew, tighten ranks, and smack any doubts about his age and capability into the nearest black hole should it come to it.

(I left the original Timeline blank as I didn’t know the travel distance between DS9 and SB10. Timelines will begin upon his boarding. (or if u add one by all means thanks! Been awhile since I’ve had to post anything of any relative length. Look forward to this! I’ll post his arrival post in a while, maybe allow for the message to be received of his arrival or something.)

He looked around with an expression of awe plastered on his face as he took in the cool carbon plating and the multitude of blinking lights which glittered across various consoles and interfaces like the stars dotting the blackness of space. Taking his first steps forward, he was greeted by the Transporter chief, and gave a curt nod of the head in reply.

"Officer Kaelyn Reporting for Duty"

Olan looked me up and I'm interested in getting someone whipped out to join the crew! I've prided myself on Trekky Geekdom, and loved the DS9 timeline, so this sounds awesome. I'm thinking Ops is sounding like a grand choice, lemme refresh my noggin on positions and potential and pop some concepts up.

Thondrek rolled over to stand and never felt the taste of dirt in his mouth was more delicious than it was now. Looking up as Geim moved on to another wounded companion, Thondrek new that the stalwart cleric had likely saved more than one life this day.

"Thank Kharox." Thondrek managed between spitting out dirt. "That bear felt like the entire undermountain came down upon me." Standing, though still in a poor position to be doing much more fighting for the time being, Thondrek pulled forth one of his three potions of Cure Moderate Wounds and quaffed it in a single swallow.

Feeling the healing properties mend his wounds somewhat he only wished it would have mended his clothing and armor the same way. Moving over to the mutant bear Thondrek looks for the longest of his needle like protrustions and extracts it from the base with a few whacks of his blade.

"Maybe we'll have better luck taking the next one down with weapons we know break their tough hide..." He looked to the others to catch their expressions at his mentioning of continuing the fight and added... "We are taking the other down right? That durn fool Draven's in there all alone, and if what all we faced was any indication, I'd not like ta know how he's faring. Pray he's found some nice corner shadows to hide in."

Thondrek took stock of his spells and inventory (please let me know what spells I have left via q/a) and turned to face the tower once more... Cursing at the very stones which rejected him so.

(I'm back!!! sorry for my departure hopefully this helps.)

It hadn't taken Nel long to make her way across the district to their apartment; a quaint little domicile that doubled as the Crimson Blade's headquarters. Her mind was swimming with a dozen different thoughts which all clashed and swirled within her head. Stepping out of the rain and running her fingers through her slick red hair, tucking the soaking locks behind her ear she sat at the main room table, taking out her specialized alchemy lab from her bag of holding. With a dilligence which showed this matter to be a personal affair, she gently took forth the bolt tipped in an unknown substance and set about trying to discover the contents.

Knowing what it was thatk illed Maurd might help her get a fix on suppliers or those known to use the product in excess. It was a start of what she hoped would be a road to justice, or at least vengeance.

I think with a strong defensive perimeter this fight wouldn't have to be so difficult... I'm thinking fighters surrounding the stair well and surrounding /flanking / gang-busting the creatureas it comesdown for surely both could not fit upo the stairwell at once... Geim, Loda , and Alyssia should be equally spread behind Thondrek, Malius, Draven amd the Bladesinger for support and healing, and I think through a battle of patience and attrition we should be able to win with some thought behind us.

Stacking two deep should help prevent bull rushes and anything of the like as well, and if need be the back row can step in long enough for the seriously wounded to be mended..

It's just a thought but i think it could work...

Anyone care to lend Thondrek a shield for this fight?

Each floor seemed out of place. For a wizard's tower there certainly seemed a lack of all things wizardly. Sure there were books and scrolls, papers and trinkets scattered across the tower accented with a myriad of bloody splatters or slain bodies, but what of the glitz, the glow of magical energies? He could find none.

As Thondrek moved lower through the tower, he froze in place when his eyes finally fell across all he had been searching for... and so much more than he had bargained for. The large creature, bear like in base reflection, but with bone shards and feral mutations changing it into something so much more than a once proud animal lay huddled in a nested lair of all things of value within the tower. The creature thankfully seemed asleep, and THondrek had to mentally slap himself for even allowing himself the thought of possibly approaching and plucking an item or two of interest from the sleeping beast's lair. Nay, got friends below that need me. He told himself with a shake of his head as he picked his way towards the stairwell once more to go lower once more.

As he made his way towards the bottom floor, he was pleased to see the scorched remnants of one of the abborations of nature slumped over. At least the wizards had put up a fight. Dying in glorified combat certainly beat being slain while asleep or even worse... cowering or attempting to flee. As Thondrek moved on, he had to freeze once more as a second very much alive boned bear creature moved passed him, the coarse hairs on the creature's back brushing against the Khord's ruddy skin like a thousand needles dancing across it's surface.

With the creature a safe distance past, Thondrek made all haste to the front door where he unlatched the lock from the inside and through open the doors. Standing there still invisible in the entryway. "Looks like the badger was the least of our worries... Two very large, and very pissed off bear's suffering from a similar affliction roam the tower. All the wizard's are dead, but there may still be something of value or information to be learned from the destruction within. At the very least we cannot allow these creatures to possibly roam free. The way is open Bladesinger.. I suggest we make a decision quickly before the creature's decide they want to take in the sunlight."
Stepping outside and Thondrek informed the party of all he saw within, hoping they would make a decision quickly in whether to seal the tower up once more, or enter and try to assist the Bladesinger.

The man's sudden change in attitude was socking to say the least. Nel wondered where she had gone wrong. She had offered money, reputation, a chance to grow as a business.. And he had responded almost with outward hositility.

Nel could merely shake her head in disapproval. "The choice is yours to make good shopkeep. And we will heed your request and move out. Perhaps as you scrub the bloodshed from your floors you might come to your senses and rethink my most gracious offer."

Nel pulled out a single gold coin and left it spinning upon the bartopas she turned to stand before her colleagues. "That should cover my drinks at least." Walkingtowards them she patted Mongerie upon his uninjured shoulder, allowing her hand to snake down and find his own weathered fingers. "Blades, take what you can from the fallen, and move out. We're obviously no longer welcome here. We'll reconvene at HQ, and tend to what needs tending to there. My apologies friends if your evening's respite has come to an unpleasant end."

Nel squeezed Mongerie's hand reassuringly and moved to leave the bar. She would stop by the local bank or appraisal shop, have the gem's appraised, then make her way back to the HQ.

Flashing a charismatic smile towards the barkeep Nel shook her head and spread her hands in a calming manner as she stepped over Groar and made her way towards the bar.

"No no good barkeep. You mistake those before you as common thugs, or perhaps a gang intent on vagantry but I assure you we are neither. My name is Nel d'Deneith, of House Deneith, I'm sure you've heard of it? These men and women behind me are the Crimson Blades, my personal escorts, honor guard, and dearest friends. Each one has the skills and strength of a half dozen common soldiers, And we would simply like to apologize for the damnable Daask bringing terror and damage to your fine establishment."

Hopping up atop the bar and swinging her slender, toned legs over to the other side where she sat cross-legged before the barkeep she smiled.

"We're not here to rob you, in fact, I'd like to pay for any damages accrued through our.. argumentative disturbance."

Nel pulled out a small coin purse feeling the weight of it in her hands. "What do you think it'll take to cover this?"

(Seeing how terrified the barkeep is, I doubt he'll try and rip her off and she'll pay a reasonable fee.)

Batting her lashes and continuing her famous smile she went on. "Actually, I was thinking perhaps this is a good opportunity for some... business of mutual benefit?"
She let the question linger a moment before getting serious. "I propose a business arrangement. You will pass any pertinant information, rumors, or descriptions of people of import, or interest to me or my Blades here. Or if we are unreachable, send carrier pidgeon or something similar to get the information to us. In return, I'll see to it that more reputable patrons know of this place, as well as do my best to ensure future events like this one don't find their way into your establishment. Of course information leading to a bounty, arrest, or other subject of value will put more coin in your coffers as well." As she spoke she leaned forward and let her hand graze the underside of the barkeeps chin, squeezing and shaking it gently. "I like this place. The people here are good people, intelligent people. I'd hate to see anything happen to it. Think we can strike a deal....?.. Oh I'm sorry what was your name?"

((Nel is trying to strike a business deal and open contacts to use when she get's Leadership later on Utilize bluff diplomacy and charisma checks as needed if any seeing how terrified he is... If anyone else doesn't post.. like Discq... Nel directs him to please heal Mongriere, and the continued looting of the other orcs.))
