Elendil and Bronwyn lay still as rocks, albeit one said rock shivered with fright atop the cool night air. As first one, then two, then another pair of goblins marched passed, Elendil and Brownyn dare not look up more than a cursory glance, lest movement give away their positions. As more and more goblin’s passed, filtering out into the trees in all directions, soon the camp was deserted. Too good to be true, one would think, for indeed it was, for soon afterwards out from the mine entrance came the Orc who had left earlier, accompanied by a trio of Gnolls, each one barking in their obscene high pitched yapping. The gnolls, wearing shreds of hide and carrying glaives and shortswords at their hips took a position around the cage bearing the human. Two of them bent low and lifted the small cage, hefting it between them while the other pair, encircled it at the front and the back. The orc meanwhile watched at the four gnolls began taking the captive right past Elendil and Bronwyn, likely towards the keep farther south. As for the Orc, he spat a viscous glob of saliva upon the earth and turned to reenter the mine.

You don't use a spellbook for YOUR class spells, but you still have the ability to burn spells from them like scrolls, as essentially that's all a spellbook is.

whomever used it would have to have detect magic, and 5 ranks of knowlede arcana. I presume that's Tersoal as myself cannot own magic items. Hammer might even have it. I can 'use' a magic item for a purpose of another, and have more than enough ranks in knowledge arcana. I just can't be the one to buy / own it.

Subject: Into the night.

They had set out late into the night, silence hung around them though thunder was left in their wake as three horses galloped northbound. At the head of their arrow point rode a man tall and proud, polished armor gleaming in even the faintest of moonlight, crimson cloak fluttering in the wind behind him, the emblazoned upturned gauntlet reaching for the heavens as he and the magnificent chestnut shire which bore him made headway. At his rear flanks, a pair of opposites rode; one dressed in the greens and browns of the landscape, hood drawn, and longbow at her back atop a Calim mare (think arabian), while the other laced in white chain rode a white charger, longspear bearing the same standard rustling from near it’s tip bearing the upright gauntlet much akin to he who rode before him. All three had left in secrecy, with a mission of great importance to their faction upon their shoulders.

All three would travel long and hard to reach their destination in time, and to succeed where it was thought others had failed. They had traveled due north for almost an entire week, at some point crossing the great river Sulduskoon with the aid of a Water Walk scroll, time not favoring the much longer roundabout path. Under the shadows of the Starspire mountains they rode west, until the sounds of war drums and torch fire met their senses. With a silent gesture, the polished man motioned to the female, and like shadow she took to the night, her form blending and weaving with her surroundings till even her own companions could no longer make out her form from the trees. She returned a short while later though with what she had learned, and to the trio it only confirmed their suspicions.

“The camps have been roused, and recently.” Came a voice thick with elvish accents. “They speak of slaughter in the east, and trouble in the south. Even now, they speak of Bolikar’s wrath and their mustering of forces. It will not be long before the entire area is teeming with their filth.” As the woman spoke, she lowered her hood, revealing coppery kin tinged with green. Dark brown eyes peered forth under long bangs of black with natural coppery-red highlights. Tall, prominent ears twitched in anticipation, and she looked from one companion to the other.
“We shall have to move quickly, or sit this one out, hoping they take the majority of their forces elsewhere, though as you’re aware, this Bolikar creature doesn’t seem to be your typical cretin greenskin, I wouldn’t place a bet that he’ll be leaving his entire fortress empty for us to waltz in and take. I count a dozen of the critters and a single Orc, likely their keeper. What say you?”

The smaller, younger man atop the charger lifted up an almost foppish hat given to him by his father for his sixteenth cycle of seasons, and though the eyesore earned him much ridicule, he refused to be parted with the only item of attachment to the family he had left far behind. Sparkling blue eyes came into view, set amidst tanned skin and a clear complexion he smiled somewhat before turning to their leader. “Like lightning we strike, leaving thunder and broken enemies in our wake eh sir?” The young squire still held an excitability about him that only proved his inexperience. He was of stout heart and mind though, and perhaps one day make a fine knight, for now though he would still need to be trained and molded into a warrior, where reality’s harshness would not overwhelm the innocent spirit of youth.

Bronwyn, led by Elendil moved slowly and cautiously forward; so slowly Bronwyn paced four heartbeats to every step. As they crept closer, her heart in her chest seemed to grow louder, threatening to give them away. Louder and louder it rang in her ears like the beating of a great drum. Then it occurred to her as they ducked low and peered into a clearing by a mine entrance that it was indeed a great drum. A large canvas covered frame being pounded upon by a goblin. Those around him, some twelve goblins and a pair of orc’s were all moving in a fluster, aroused by the drum-chant. As they parted, from the huddle they once were in, the women eyed a small wooden cage, within a hunched over figure draped in a dark cloak, the hood covering his facial features.

As the goblin’s armed themselves, and the Orc’s barked their orders, one ran into the mine, while the other donned a suit of hide armor, the man in the cage spoke. “Looks like some unexpected guests.” A nearby goblin turned and jabbed a crude spear through the cage bars, the prisoner narrowly shifting to avoid the point. “Shaddup” the goblin spat, and the man in th cage merely laughed. “You wouldn’t want to damage Bolikar’s offering now.” said the stranger as he moved to sit on his knees, so small was the cage that it would not allow him to stand. With a grunt the goblin moved passed, and all around the air filled with the beating of drums, as the encampments roused, weapons gathered and armor donned. Pairs of goblins began moving off towards the trails, patrol’s no doubt. Elendil and Bronwyn would have to move, and quickly, as twin pairs of goblins began heading towards the path just off to their right.

Lawful Good vs Lawful Stupid.

I try and try to get this across to people. Just because a Paladin is bound by the tenants of good and law, does not mean he's a moron blindly abject to brash heroics.

In a hostage situation, a Paladin is a perfect negotiator (high diplomacy skills w/ charisma) to try and see the hostage safely returned... THen he can proceed to smite said villain..

Dragon.. a Paladin would more likely withdrawl to gather an armed militia or provide intelligence on the situation instead of brazenly thinking they can take the dragon singlehandedly. He's not Required to throw his life away because a big evil monster appears, only handle it in the most positive way while sticking to the mandates of their faith.

It didn’t take long for the companions to beat a hasty retreat from the encampment, withdrawing back across the bridge and into the cover of the copse of trees scattered on the other side of the bank. There introductions, healing, and strategy would be made, for their next strike against the common foe. It was while they were speaking that their ears caught the sound of war drums once more, this time more prominent, and soon after, a second, third and then half dozen were banging in unison, or apart, conveying the common message most likely. They had been attacked
The cloak made from a wolf’s hide and fur was of fine quality, the craftmanship of they who skinned it evident in the soft lining affixed to the underside of the pelt, and the strong seams which ran along its length. Though not magical, it was still a fine piece of work.

(Dylan has used five charges from his wand of healing (45/50) recovering 4, 4, 9 (intella), 5, and 6 respectively. Bringing Dylan to 23/24 hp, and Intella to 28/36hp.

Aelistae uses one 0 level spell to cure Dylan to 24/24hp, 1 Use of her wand on Intella for 9 equaling 36/36 Hp. She also uses two charges on Xaris , healing 4 and 7 respectively, bringing him to 60/61 hp.

Elendil's healing belt expends a charge,(2/3) and Talon screeches back to conciousness. It's wounded wing is mended, though a rather large bump on its forehead would remain from the swelling. Carefully removing what signs of struggle with the goblin she could, Elendil heads back for Bronwyn, who herself is steadily advancing with a look of paranoia about her.

As Elendil stepped out from the side of the path, she nearly caught a magic missile herself for her appearance, but thankfully no such attack came. Reunited, the women had options once more.

Kimono logged back into the world after a day off as it were. She hadn’t touched her computer at all since the incident with Kiku, she really didn’t know if she’d ever pick up her controller again. Then she read her email, and amidst the spam and gossip talk from her girlfriends, and a particularly cute guy she’d been crushing on since 4th grade, there was TL’s, speaking of recovery and secrecy. Kimono’s mouse ran over the ‘delete’ button more than once, but she could not simply let herself click the button that would rid her of this connection.

Instead, she found herself logging into the World once more, heading for Lia Fall, to TL, and to answers. As the world formed around her, the archaic surroundings once more took her breath away; the attention to detail exquisite. Finding TL under the cherry blossoms, she approached to find Kursado similarly nearby. As he spoke, she remained silent, she really didn’t know where to begin. She was angry and uncertain, concerned for Kiku and her player, but mostly confused, she had hoped Twin Lightning, whomever was beyond the character had real answers.

Who is Khalil?

Gorg raised a thin, almost non-existant eyebrow, thin sparse black hairs on a prominant brow. "Who Khalil you say. Then, you not Khalil. No you no for Bolikar. You..."
Gorg falls silent, backing away a moment eyeing those gathered, before turning to run, screaming something repeatedly in his native tongue, unrecognizable to the party. He didn't get very far however, as Linnix raised her bow and placed a single arrow in the fleeing boy's back, pushing him forward into a stumble, his voice stolen along with his breath, his life as he fell face first to the earth.
As eyes fell on her, she could only give a shrug that had "What?" written all over it. They could not afford to be discovered, and everyone knew that even if they did not want to speak it aloud.

Subject: where to

To the north, Elendil and Brownyn were engaged in a less civil exchange, with words hurled as verbal weapons to accompany the sword blows, and magic missiles of wands. At one end of the path, Elendil and her opponent squared away, both exchanging glancing blows, that did little more than entice more combat, while Bronwyn’s second Magic Missile (48/50) felled her foe with a small impact of flashing light as the missile of immaculate accuracy slammed into the goblin’s chest, knocking him for a loop from which he would not recover. Thankfully in the clear once more, Bronwyn could still here Elendil and her goblin enemy up ahead in th dark. A second round of battle netted still no successful blows, the goblin hooting and howling as it jumped from side to side taunting the elf. This served only to further the ranger’s anger, and her next strike would be retributive, catching the goblin across the face, splitting it’s jaw from ear to ear and claiming its life in a tumble to the ground, its face left in a perpetual bloody grin.

Elendil, reaching for her companion Talon, picks up on the wind with her acute sense of hearing the sounds of goblin’s up ahead, cursing and taunting much as her now defeated enemy had. She faintly makes out partial phrases like “poke him” and “can we eat him?” in goblin tongue while remarks such as “....to your leader” and “wouldn’t do that...” are spoken in a human dialect laced with rich Calimshite accents.

Subject: Questions

In a quiet encampment surrounded by a not-so quiet gathering of ill intended greenskins and their ilk, numerous party members now looked upon the half orcish child standing in the corner of the tent. At the forefront was Aelistae, the fearsome dark elf reputed for their cruelty and creative malice. When she sheathed her weapon and held aloft some tidbit morsels however the child looked at her strangely, truly confused. None-the-less, he complied, shuffling out from behind the drums and closer to she who bid him come hither. As he approached, Linnix cut through the side of the tent, appearing in plain sight, startling the younger half breed, but still he went to Aelistae.

As they backed away from the tent, leaving behind the field of silence, The orc looked around the carnage of his clan’s destruction with eyes of anger and hate. Aelistae looked at the young one, with eyes unlike Gorg in orcish, or George in human tongue had ever seen. He had seen drow eyes before, but Aelistae’s were filled with a kindness misplaced upon her ebony features. Aelistae prodded the boy for information subtly at first, gaining his name and the fact that he was indeed a proud member of the Moon Howl clan, ready to rise above his tainted bloodline (referring to human) and prove to all he was a mighty warrior, worthy of following the Great Bolikar. This undoubtedly pushed Aelistae or the other’s around to more questions, but Gorg interrupted with one of his own.

Speaking in Orcish, then repeating it in a broken english, raising a brow when he realizes noone understands him Gorg says “Why has Bolikar sent you to punish us, we have done nothing wrong. Has Khalil sent you to do her bidding?”

I wouldn't think wrapping your fists in chains would invoke an unfamiliarity penalty, as you're still simply punching or what not, it would be like wearing a spiked gauntlet in a sense simple turning non-lethal into lethal and armed damage. Though you are correct in losing 'reach' but then again, THAT use of the chain would certainly be a unfamiliar wepaon penalty and it might not even be enough chain to grant you a reach bonus.

I can dimension hop likely a total of two people out of the cage sucking up the remainder of my spells for the day. The only illusion spell I have of remote use are Dancing lights and ghost sound, but these orc's have been pretty smart to linking magic to the caster as we've seen.

As far as a spellbook goes. Any arcane caster (myself or Ellisarae) as it stands I believe would be able to 'burn' spells directly from a spellbook. Using them as scrolls but destroying the chance of ever memorizing from said book again. Though I don't see any spellbooks just lying around waiting to be nabbed either.

the chains make for a practical application. By wrapping chains around your fists, you're noW considered armed, and deal lethal damage, as well as no longer provoke unarmed attacks of opportunity.
Time to think a little more outside the box.

Topic: Keeping PC's alive
Subject: hmmm

Well, I can thankfully say I've never lost a character in a tabletop D&D game, or on the inn so far as I can remember to death (Though one was basically removed from play as he was imprisoned and unable to escape) but then again I'm usually the cautious and calculating player, not the brazen warrior.

As a Dm though, I've been running my new FR game since december, and at last recollection have at least 5 PC deaths under my belt. Only one was effectively the removal of a player who left the inn suddenly with no word for an extended period of time.

I've had it said my challanges are 'over the top' and impossible even, but as surviving members of the campaign will attest. I 'always' leave options open to survive encounters traps or puzzles, even though Pc's are often reluctant to 'flee', or see beyond the obvious (well i don't see anything on my character sheet that's going to get me out of this one)

To summarize my point.
In the last scenario, a duskblade and a paladin entered a long since ravaged temple to Oghma and Denier (deity's of knowledge and learning) and encountered the signs of some specter or ghost, though subtle interaction like breezes, or the lifting of their hair. After solving a puzzle involving a riddle a merchant had passed on regarding the temple, they entered the main chapel, where an Evil orb radiating negative energy and necromancy was kept. upon an pedastal before an alter of a woman in a pieta pose holding the remannts of a skeleton shakled where the broken stone of its original burden once lay. In the pews were a handful of skeleton's looking like they were killed and suspended in a state of prayer. Bravely they defeated it eventually, revealing within the orb was a still beating, large heart covered in a layer of frigid frost still emanating a small radius of cold. (And most certainly detecting as Evil as was explained via pm over IM)
The spirit appeared to them then, a incorporeal woman who bid them give her back her heart. Without a second thought, a search of the area or anything they complied, placing the heart back in the cavity of the skeleton.

Long story short, they revived the living pandora's box as it were as they released 'Malice' (the name of the halfdragon) upon the world. As gratitude for freeing her of the prison the priests had so hard-fought-for placed her into, the half dragon offered them their lives. Turning her back upon them and lowering her guard.

Both pc's chose to strike her... Both lost their lives..

On that note, both are playing much more cautious new characters lol.
