Subject: The Doctor is In

At almost seven feet tall Klik-Chaka'doc stood towering over most of those gathered in the town square as he assessed those around him. He bore the same authoritative crown burned deep into the relief of his bone and leather armour as the Templars issuing first a call for adventurers seeking wealth and fame; cut by the blatant lack of request and reinforced by threats of punishment for defiance. Though his armour denoted allegiance to the militant lackeys of the God King and his ambitions, Klik's hearts beat for another more pious purpose. He observed many as they brokered tenuous partnerships and companies as the crowd thinned, leaving only a handful of strangers amidst the dust of the mid-day congregation.

Six strangers, from six far reaching lands and lineages remained and without words the motley crew was already a spectacle. Those deemed without merit enough to be drafted into one company or another, the dregs of the skill barrel.

No matter. Klik thought. And as he looked around at those gathered his thought's became his voice as it echoed in the minds of those he focused on.

Fear not the Templars, nor the situation we find ourselves in for through adversity we build strength. We are granted opportunities when least we seek them, and this is but one challenge thrown upon the pile of surviving this cruel machination we call life.

Klik gently fingered the bloody ribbon between the fingers of his left secondary hand, as his mandibles clicked excitedly.

The Thri-kreen shifted as he witnessed a half-elf introduced as Crowe break the ice with a lumbering brute of a man named Ochitt. The muscled man spoke plainly, articulating slowly; but was that due to a lack of a verbose vocabulary or deliberate intent Klik was uncertain.

Klik tried to force out some of the common tongue, but lacking the very muscle in question, it came out broken and strained. Pointing to himself, and his dust crusted Smock he tried to mouth the word Klik, but without proper vocal chords or a humanoid tongue, it was nigh impossible. With a sigh, he resorted to his native telepathy, projecting his name to the others.

You may refer to me as Klik. Doctor Klik if it suits you. I am a field medic trained in the Templar order, though not bound to its stringent regiments as most foot soldiers. If you have need of patching up on this newfound journey. It would seem I'm to be your bug.

Subject: the problem with 5e and spell levels

Is that Providing offensive spellcasters the easy ability to 'screw nature' and increase the raw damage their spells do (spell level doesnt affect spell DC in 5e anymore); is infinitely more powerful and likely common than those few who want to 'preserve' life.

If we're going to balance the scales, Preserving should be harder (there's less preservable land) but stronger in the outcome. (not sure how yet but will edit when I have more time)

Or. allow preserving to have a immediate impact. (like the land becomes fertile again in a small radius) and when on 'preserved land or land lush with life still' they then get to cast spells at the higher level etc. if the balance isnt there it's noticable why the game world is fubared. it's just too easy to wrack power from nothing lol.

just a thought.

since my God is actually an 'old god' are those spells still restricted? I would think create water would be a fundamental part of the spells of the old god of healing and life lol.

It may add for some interesting Rp as well since it's considered 'lost knowledge' as well.

If however it proves problematic from a DM perspective IE. Dehydration threats become moot because of it then for flavour purposes that's fine. maybe I can 'earn the spell' from dedicated service or something down the line lol.

Topic: Looking for ideas
Subject: NEverwinter wood

Neverwinter Woods is home to a Skymirror. An ancient and powerful scrying device that the Circle of the Woods (a druid conclave) uses to contact the elders of other Circles, or fey spirits of other realms for guidance and information.

The Skymirror is literally a lake in the center of the woods, surrounded by four great oaks which bear clues symbollic of druidic spells which need to be cast upon the trees to unlock the wards denying access to the skymirror.
All the spells are second level spells so well within reach of 6th level players.

Often one tree has a carving representing a spell. Such as an owls face, (Owl's wisdom) a charging bull (bull's strength), a jaguar leaping (cat's grace) , maybe a half human half bark face (barkskin) etc

spells easily chosen by a druid/ cleric, or in some cases, arcane spell casters. of course you can set the clues yourself.

Once unlocked, the skymirror may be able to 'guide them through a projection above the stillness of the lake, (imagine a reflection in the waters) of where the Gate is. As for closing it.

Have 1-2 monkey men casters as maintaining it. Once defeated the gate will close, within however many rounds (as it shrinks and dissipates) allowing potential escape time if they have to close it from the other side.

This owuld lead to a likely 'boss scenario' where the adventurers have to fight their way through guardians to these gatekeepers etc to stop it. (imagine storming a stargate if you followed the show)

Or alternatively let the skymirror show them of a Lodestone, or some other named relic that has the power to seal a gate indefinately. It could then set them on the path for an entire adventure to locate the object AND should they deign to use it. (maybe as an option other than going in to stop the gatekeepers) it adds for future dynamics as perhaps now the Great Apes are cut off from their 'breeding grounds' and it could have in game consequences for the ecology of the species or Neverwinter Woods as a whole.

just a few quick thoughts on a break from work.

Subject: Doc Klik

Doc Klik is finished and submitted after going through Impulses tweaking. Should make it to the Character page when he's back from holidays.

Doc Klik has the bedside manner of a cockroach, which is not much better than his appearance; but his skill with a scalpel or a spellweave to mend flesh or bone is second to none. The battlefield medic speaks little unless it is required, and often his conversation goes unheard of outside those intended, for his Broken common is distorted and elongated, so he prefers the use of his limited telepathy. Nothing quite like being inside a patients head when he's inside your body too fixing up what's broken.

Doc Klik has a warrior's heart, and never shies from a battle, but his lust for the hunt itself often outweighs any desire for reward. The Thri-kreen serves a higher purpose, one believed he alone knows of, and serves it with all the vigor and spirit his chitinous body can muster. Unorthodox, unsocial, and perhaps a little unhinged to the common eye, Doc "Klik," --a moniker picked up for ease of use along the road to save people trying to pronounce his name in the Kreen tongue-- is undoubtedly a reliable compatriot who takes the Doctor's code as seriously as a paladin takes his oath, or a wizard their craft.

We the pc's are linked how? I read something about bounty hunters. Are we members of a guild? or some organization? do we work for the God King or some third party?

Just working on Doc's backstory is all.

Subject: Stepping up

Between running a bi weekly live game, Dming a roll20.net game and playing in another roll20.net game I thought this one game would be enough to date my far too long distance from the inn, though I have been drawn to read back over my last Dm's game (75pages!) and the spark is there, but for now I'd love to keep playing and hope you do too

As for thri-keen since their entire being for living only 30-40 years is due to the theory that they don't sleep is probably give them back the sleepless feature from the conversion Ayrn posted, but I like the adaptation of weaker arms incapable of extra attacks. (They can hold my scalpel and gauss lol)
If I had to choose impulse between a 10' telepathy and a natural starting armour class of 13+Dex from a Rp perspective the telepathy works for party interaction in small scale but there armour adds a descriptive dofference, a combat value and potential to for trying to find armour to compliment my chitinous form.. Graft ceramics to my shell? Haha

Anywho lots of interest is always a good sign and ayrn's assessments are spot on as memory serves but I hope to see this play out and play long.

That being said the party sizes fall mostly on your timeframe and effort to manage multiple storylines at the same time, im down for either way though.

Subject: some questions

Defiling / preserving.
It looks like from a rules perspective Defiling get's all the bonuses and preserving get's nothing, not even a rp value of trying to 'restore nourishment to the terrain or anything. aside from an 'uphill moral struggle' is there any intrinsic reason to be a preserver?

Does drawing your magic from a land already scorched and barren inherently make you 'evil'? It seems to me from reading what I have that defiling as a magical side effect is almost just 'the norm'.

Races: Muls. They seem to have really gotten all the benefits of both races, increased speed, tolerance, years of age, but they pick up the sleep perk of the elvish races (which is even shorter than your revised thri-kreen which originally got a free long rest in a short rest period), and the incredibly strong Relentless Endurance of the half-orc race as well. Is this in your opinion balanced?

I see the doc you posted where you sorta made a personal errata of what you liked and didnt like. Will work with that. I like how the life domain is available now though

With the communication troubles, and lack of natural armor Thri-kreen cleric may not be the best choice now (though a mantis like looking healer idea still intrigues me lol)

Will write up something soon.

I looked at that doc ayrn posted. It says while Thri-kreen can only speak kreen (a language of clicks and pops cause they have no lips etc) and a distorted elongated hissing broken common, they have telepathy and can communicate to anyone within 100 feet that can understand any language.

Subject: some conflictions

I'm reading Ayrns 5e conversion of the 2e setting, but there are 'auras' and healing surges (which was 4e) and all sorts of 'gm specific' potentials (like wild talents) that should probably be ironed out before character creation is made.

That being said, since elemental domains are the only ones available in this setting a thri-kreen earth cleric (or human / human varient) seem to be calling to me.

if he's willing to have a sixth person, I can have a cleric drawn up post haste. I have the background almost completely done out of interest to play such a role and can generate 5e characters pretty quick.

Hey there, love 5e, haven't played in a play by post game in quite a long time here, but if anyone needs, I have the entire phb in pdf format as well you can share with the players if you like.

The dark sun setting seems interesting though, and it seems like you have a good party lined up with 5 players. I'll keep an eye out and see how this progresses

^^ PLAYERS HANDBOOK

Edit: actually if you'll consider a 6th player I've got a great idea about a cleric who hides behind the guise of a medicine man (doctor background from the 5e wiki or sage background from phb) hiding his divine magic for fear of persecution. Highly morales he'll offer aid to friend or foe as the dr's code is to preserve all life etc etc
