"Tell my father what has happened here and that I am staying. He will understand." With no more to say Billy simply waited for whatever came next.

Billy tried to send his mind, what little of it there was, out to contact the others. "Well anyone have any thoughts on the choice at hand?" After a moment he added "I for one find this world a bit more intersting than the one I came from and I think we make quite a good team. I will be staying."

He waited for the others to answer if they could but his mind was all but made up.

Billy was exhuasted but his friends urged him on. Together they crawled to the feet of the beast and Siliwen's magic fought that of the beast. Even in this battle of magic Billy could sense that his strength was being tapped to help his companion; as usual magic needed help from the flesh. "Hurry for I do not have much strength left." he managed to gasp out as he fought to tap his final reserve hoping it would be enough.

Billy heard the sword in mid charge. So far it had given only good advice so he dipped his sword attack and bull rushed the creature. The impact would certainly have killed lesser men for it was like hitting a solid stone wall; something Billy had done before so he knew exactly what that felt like. As with the wall, the creature gave under Billy's charge and it was knocked aside. Billy was surprised when teh sword almost seemed to swing itself at the manacles and free his friend. It was then that the debt his body owed for using nothing but adrenaline came due. He sunk to his kness knowing that he was spent. If so much as a schoolgirl came at him now he was not sure who would win.

He heard the creature taunt the group and his heart sunk. Then the voice they had heard upon arrival in this world rang in his head urging them to band together. With the last of his strength Billy crawled to where Alea and Siliwen stood and collapsed at their feet; a hand on each of them. He knew that steel would not win this fight. "I hope I bought you enough time; it is up to magic now." He looked at his recently freed friend and prayed that she was strong enough to finish what they had all begun.

Billy struggled but could not break free of the invisible bonds that squeezed him. Once more he cursed the use of magic. Then for a moment the bonds released a bit and he drew several deep breaths into his starved lungs. He could not break free but he at last was able to breath. Moments later the unthinkable happened; the bonds weakened even more and Billy managed to break free.

Looking up he found himself near the vile creature that had bound him and by some miracle the creature was facing away from him. Gathering his sword, Billy charged the creature and aimed a sing at the spot where head and neck met. 'Lets see how you like the taste of steel.' he thought as he swung. Once more Billy was focused on saving his friend.

Billy's fake retreat worked almost as he planned it; he hadn't planned on getting hit at all but it worked pretty well overall. Moving with a limp he closed in on the leader and felt stronger with each step. Then an invisible force seemed to squeeze the breath from him. Gathering all his hatred of just this kind of magical attack by one he knew to be feeble he let his rage build and felt it augmented by power form the sword. When his rage built to the point it could build no more he gave a loud, fierce war cry and put all his might and that of the sword into breaking free. He would either break the bond that held him or die from over-exertion trying. He had to get to his friend and rescue her.

Billy's sword was undeterred by the magic shields and as before the Shelnak faces showed confusion, shock and concern. He knew he took a few hits in return but adrenaline kept him from feeling the pain he knew would come later.

A voice in his head urged him; no it ordered him to save their lost companion and the sword itself seemed to pull him towards her. Knowing that a rush past the enemies before him would open him up to attack he tried something he hoped they had not seen before. Billy took a step back and tried to look like he was going to turn and run. Then, after a moments pause, he dropped his right shoulder and rolled towards the leader. With luck they would be too stunned to retaliate until he was past them.

Billy saw their lost companion and she llooked like she had been found just in time. Although he wished to rescue her immediatley, his attention for the moment was drawn to the enemy before him. Although the others referred to them as "large", Billy found them to be just about the right size for a good fight. Drawing his sword he readied himself for battle. 'Well sword, lets see what you can do' he thought as he attacked the nearest foe.

Billy listened to the others; especially when Alea mentioned his sword might indeed be magical. He was about to drop it when Thor suggested it might simply be a gift fromthe gods. Then their dwarf companion stated that he would take the sword.

For several long moments Billy sttod still, thinking about what to do. 'Father always taught me that magic was for the weak and a crutch used by those not strong enough in their own right. But now I see Alea fight and she has helped us all more than once.' he thought to himself. Those around him noticed a determined and perplexed look on his face. 'What if it is magic; will I be seen as weak? Then again if it is simply a relic from the gods then only a truely mighty warrior would be able to weild such a thing. Yes that must be it; it is a relic and I am honored by being allowed to hold it. Billy nodded to himself as he thought.

"I have deceided that this sword is not 'magic' but rather a relic from the gods as Thor suggested. As such I will keep it. Now lets get after those Shelnak."

Billy's breath came in long measured rythm as he calmed himself. Looking at the scene before him and the sword in his hands he wondered exactly what had happened. It was almost like the sword itself wanted to fight. That thought shocked Billy and he dropped the giant sword. "Do you think the sword is magic or something? I am not gonna use a magic sword!" Billy was not a fan of magic as it was for the weak. He favored muscle and sweat.

Billy charged in to battle and his great sword swung in huge archs stopping only when it found purchased in Shelnack flesh; and it stopped often. This was Billy in his element. It was after the second foe fell to his blade that Billy became a bit confused. He was happy to be in battle again but it was differant than he ever felt before. It was almost as if someone or something else was happy along with him. For now there was killing to do and he would ponder the emotions thing later. That is if he remembered to think about it later.

Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, Billy pressed his attack.

Billy figured if the Shelnaks were coming out of the tunnel the group needed to take the decision was easy; fight. Of course for Billy deciding to fight was pretty easy in itself. His sword had worked last time and so he figured it should work again. Not wanting to receive a charge flat-footed he drew his sword and charged at the leading enemy. There would be no asking for quarters or any given; death was the only excuse for leaving the fight early and Billy intended to allow as many of the Shelnaks to depart as possible. His first swing was aimed at the base of the neck in an attempt to cleave and make a quick kill.

Billy scratched his head, trying hard to think. "She is gone and we don't know where she went or if she is alive. We do know that there is a battle we must fight. If we skip teh battle looking for her and find her it will be too late for her to do anything. If we fight and don't find her we may not be able to go on. But if we fight we have a chance of finding her and finishing our task. So I say we go and fight."

OK, guess your tenth grade education tops my BS in Biology so I bow to your superior knowledge. there are very few "absolute certains" and "speculation is what drives research and is exactly what your teacher is looking for; your "speculation" on what makes us human. Hope you get a good grade.

Topic: What does it mean to be Human
Subject: perhaps conceit

Maybe it is conceit that makes us human. We might just be the only species that believes others are incapable of anything and we are vastly superior.

My dog tells me very plainly when he needs to go outside to potty, when someone is at the door, when it is past his dinner time or that he is happy to see me come home. They don't speak "human" but they certainly do communicate. One of our dogs actual "tells" my wife when she is about to get an asthma attack and will go to her and whine and pace between her and her breathing treatment machine until she listens to him. We never taught him to do that but he figure dit out.

Just because we are too dumb to understand dolphin speech doesn't mean they don't understand it and communicate just as effectively as we do. Even bees can tell each other where flowers are.

Seeing eye dogs, helper monkeys and the like certainly do learn and use tools.

As for compasion, there have been many stories of primates helping out the injured; both of their own and at times humans.

Topic: What does it mean to be Human
Subject: outside the box?

Why exactly think outside the box on this one? Unless this is a strictly philosophical assignment why not go scientific?

Our DNA is what makes us human.

Used to be "use of tools" sets humans apart from animals but that has been proven false.

Then it was "organized form of communication": again disproven

Then it was ability to rationalize: disproven also.

For awhile it was we were the only ones who went to war, raped each other or killed soley for pleasure; those also have been disproven.

Compassion; nope that is seen often in animlas as well.

Watch TV was suggested but you can get videos designed for cats and dogs that they watch for hours so that is a no-go as well.

"That is pretty risky. I am not real sure they will buy it. But if you want to give it a try, you probably need to be the one to fake it as me giving up is more believable. Unless of course you manage to hit something this time and we even the odds."

Velina winced as the first arrow nicked her. The second arrow hurt like nothing she had felt before. She was in a bit if trouble and knew it. Quickly she pulled the arrow out and then downed one of her healing potions. Knowing it would take too long to ready her crossbow with all she had done so far she instead unleased a spell. Aiming for the rider she had wounded she sent Kelgore's fire bolt towards him.

"Well look at that, the little girl hit and the mighty warrior missed. I promise not to tell too many people."
