Subject: Death comes

Velina wwatched the blood slowly stop flowing and the angry light in the clerics eyes fade. Moments later he lay dead. She felt no remorse for what she did; he had led an attack on her party but neither did she feel elation over her first kill. In fact, she felt nothing.

The rest of the group had their attention focused on the remaining enemy so Velina took time to search the body of the now dead cleric for any items that appeared useful or interesting.

Subject: my thoughts

I am thinking that they would be unlikely to offer any useful info. Esp the cleric as religious fanatics rarely go against the gods.

My main concern is what happens if we let any of them get away. Who will they tell and how much hurt will that bring down on us.

Subject: Suit yourself

"Well, you signed your own death warrent." Velina was really not surprised that he refused her terms and the look in his eye told her that an answers he gave would likely be either false or too cryptic to be helpful. "I should just let you here to slowly bleed out and die or die in agony from infection. However I will at least grant you a quick death."

Velina once move moved in with her daggers, but this time she was not moving slowly and offering the cleric a chance to decline her advance. No, this time she was going to kill him quickly. For the first time in her life, her skills would be used against an actual person. She knew she would forever see those glaring eyes in her nightmares.

Subject: same thinking

I origionally thought teh same thing but teh post said we already offered to let him go. Now, only one of us made that civalrous offer and Velina is certainly not above "sneaky" moves but at this stage party unity would suffer if we don't honor it.

Subject: Hmmmmm

Velina was thinking about the offer when the lone remaining enemy planted his sword and asked for permission to leave. "Hmm a cleric with no healing of his own? Tsk, tsk; you should know better than that." Taking out the potion she moved closer. "My dagger rests against your throat first then you drink; you try anything stupid and I will send you on your way to Bane myself. Understand?"

OOC: Assuming he accepts

IC:She placed her dagger and then offered him the potion.

Seeing that her companions had things fairly well in hand, Velina dismounted and closed on the injured cleric. Drawing her twin daggers, she approached him. "Who sent you and how did you know of the map? Speak quickly or speak never again."

Velina waited a few seconds for an answer. If the cleric wished to co-operate she would simply monitor him for now. If he refused to answer or answered in an unhelpful manner she intended to end his life quickly.

Subject: An easier target

Velina saw the enemy cleric fall and saw an easier target than the fighter. Spurring her mount she headed towards the downed opponent. "I'll take care of the cleric!" she yelled to those near her.

She intended to close with the injured man, then dismount and attack. Hopefully she would avoid being engaged by anyone else. If she was, her attention would of course be turned to her new adversary.

Two quick questions so I can post:
1. How far is velina from the downed cleric?

2. Can she make it there and attack in one round without offerign anyone an attack of opportunity on her? (she is mounted still)

Subject: Clarification

Velina called to Kannizan, "Glad for the company."

OOC: Velina is not so much charging as staying a bit behind/outside those charging so she will catch them just after they enter melee. She wants to avoid being a target in the melee but close enough to avoid the archers getting a good bead on her if possible.

Subject: Well now....

Velina figured the other group was not gonna step aside and she really wasn't surprised that they had named a high toll. She was however surprised that they knew of the map. That was not a good thing at all. How did they find out she wondered. Then in an instant her wondering was over as she saw one of them charge and moments later Bearpaw charged as well. He was soon joined by two others of the party.

Taking stock of her chances in mounted combat against straight fighters, Velina knew the odds were certainly not in her favor. For now her best bet was to keep close to those who were moving forward and look for an opening. Grabbing the daggers from her thigh sheaths, she kneed her mount forward and kept to the outside of her charging companions. If an opportunity presented itself she would throw her two daggers at the charging enemy. If not she would wait for now.

Subject: assumptions

Well if a player posts after another and throws out more questions it is my assumption that they were not waiting for an answer as they saw that one had already been answered. Most games I have played in the non-combat stuff goes in post order; whoever posts first acts first. Only in actual combat does initiative come into play. Will adjust if that is not the method here.

As for a leader, we do need one but unless the heir steps up and takes charge or at least appoints someone to be a spokesperson we will continue to struggle and be unorganized as characters; players might work together but not the characters.

Subject: Multiple questions asked

Velina looked at Gunk-karg as he made his demands that the other group stepp aside or declare their intentions. They had not answered her question about a toll which she had hoped might bribe their way past the blockade and now the orcish one was making demands. Not that it was unexpected for one of orc ancestry to be blunt but it seemed fairly obvious to her at least that those before them were not there by accident and were unlikly to step aside. And they didn't seem like the kind to back down to threats. "Well I guess you just bought us a fight. Hope you can handle them." she said to Gunk-karg.

She eyed up the opponents and her companions and it looked like it might be a fair and even fight which is the kind she liked to avoid.

'Well it didn't take long to find trouble.' Velina thought to herself. 'Guess I'll see how this group reacts.'

While thinking she glanced around and saw weapons readied and other signs of tension. Seemed her companions were itching for a fight.

Turning to the group blocking the road she called out, "Is there a toll for use of the road?" She hoped that a bit of gold might avoid a fight that looked a bit stacked against them.

Quietly Velina spoke, "No you are not the heir, not the leader and none of us volunteered to follow you. Might do well to remember that before you cause a stir."

Subject: Think

"Of course a bunch of hobgoblins would be a push over for a tribe or clan, but neither are traveling with us. Sure you can take on 10 hobgoblins yourself my friend but what if there are 50 of them attacking you?" Velina waited a moment before continuing. "Remeber they said these were hobgoblin like things not real hobgoblins. Whatever they are the managed to kill a talented wizard in his own home. That alone tells me I should at least respect their ability to organize and fight. I doubt our little group would have had the same luck attacking that place. I for one would like to live thru this jaunt."

Turning to the map, "Your idea of taking red lark seems to make sense. I also care little which way we go as long as we stay together." Velina climbed into her saddle, "I will follow which ever way ther heir deems appropriate."

Subject: Which path?

"I appreciate your eagerness but perhaps we need to figure out exactly how we will be going before rushing off. We can travel overland which may be quicker and let us avoid highway bandits but has perils of its own like wild creatures. Then again the road may be quicker depending on the terrain of the overland route but we might be easily spotted as we arrive at the manor and lose the element of surprise." Velina shrugged, "Either way is fine with me but we should at least agree on which way we are going. Working together we have a chance of coming back alive; working as individuals I suspect that the Lord of Waterdeep will enjoy their new estate."

Velina readied her mount insuring her gear was properly packed, the saddle was tight and her daggers were well seated in their sheaths. Just to be safe she had packed one of the healing potions near the top of her pack in easy reach in case of trouble.

Subject: Not fair?

"Not fair you say? Well would it be 'fair' for someone your size to fight me? Perhaps honorable by some standards but far from fair for we both know I would stand no chance. For you and your tribe single, physical combat is fair for that is accepted. Wizards would count any use of a weapon as unfair and would call anything but spell use unfair in a fight. You never hear a knight calling for magic use or a thief asking for combat on a field of honor. What is 'fair' is often simply what the person describing it feels is in their best interest." Velina smiled, "As for me, fair is irrelevant. What matters is who lives and who dies." Placing a hand on the barbarian's arm she added, "I would be honored to fight next to you as well. I'll make a deal with you; if you fight in single combat in a 'fair' way I will do my best to make sure it stays that way and your opponent doesn't get any help or cheat."

Perhaps others, like me, are waiting for any indication of a plan from the heir who by nature of position should be in charge. Or at least appoint someone to lead for them. We need to get some semblence of cooperation going or this will get difficult for you as a DM very quickly with everyone doing their own thing( some resting, some leavign right away; some riding at fast pace, some keeping with walkers; some direct route, some highway route.

Fixed my earlier post to show my father as the elf.

Velin alistened with interest to teh story. "Sorry you never your birth parents but it sounds like you found a much better family in teh end. All we can ask is a place where we are welcomed. I won't tell the others our secret about you smarts; they can figure it out on their own if they are smart enough." Velina's brow furrowed in concentration, "Now as for what I am, how do I explain it to you? You are correct that I do fight but there is a bit more than that. I can cast a spell or two as well. Now, I am not as good as a straight up fighter like you in single combat nor am I a match for a true wizard in a magic duel but by being a bit of both I hope to have a surprise. I say I hope as I have never been allowed to actually fight, just learn from tomes or books as you would know them. Tomes is just a a fancy word for them."

"Well, I guess I did miss you elvin heritage; you are not of the regular mix. I doubt anyone here in this town would guess you to be of mixed blood." Velina thought a moment. "Was it your father or mother who is elvin? For me it was my father who was elvin."

"As for 'dumbing things down for you', I hope I do not offend you. The way I figure it you are smarter than you let on but it might be to our advantage in certain situations to have people think otherwise. Tongues tend to wag more around those judged to 'simple' to understand and you might pick up some useful information. However, if you wish I will cease and not use words differant than those I would normally choose unless you ask for an explaination. Being underestimated is often a good thing; you have an element of surprise on folks. Take me for example, bet none of you know what to make of me do you?"

Subject: Almost ready

"I am almost ready my big friend. Just need to make a last stop by the weapons shop as I have been eyeing a dagger or two. As for why they make the buildings so small there are two reasons, first space in cities is expensive and second most city dwellers don't work out and get as big as you so they think the shops are of just fine size." Velina led the way to the weapons shop and after her last purchase the pair headed back.

"My we get a lot of looks. You would think folks never saw a barbarian and half-elf together before." Velina laughed for she knew what an odd combination the two presented. "Just so you know I never give up; however when required I do change my goals. Tis better to live to fight another day and discretion is the better part of valor are what my elvin teachers told me. It was a passing centaur that said it a differant way; you have to be alive to avenge a wrong."

"I figured you knew gold." Velina turned and left for the shops. "I figure we hit the merchants for food, then healing stuff." Velina led the way and stopped a few times to ask directions. Eventually she found the shops necessary. "Well, get what you think you might need."

OOC: I sent a PM to the game master with my shopping list.
