Watched it, thoroughly enjoyed it, better then LOtR (But not by much)

I know reviews have said that it's a bit slow in places, and although it could be accused of that near the start I think it's paced just about right.

Subject: Sharing is caring

I like the phrase sharing is caring, not because I believe it's true but because it rhymes. Anyway, I thought I would share something with you all.

Today has been a big day for me.

Today was the presentation date for a major bit of group work I'd been stressing out over for three weeks, we did it and I think we may have just pulled it out the bag in true student style.
Tomorrow is also the deadline for my Progress Report for my Dissertation, this is relevant today because I handed it in today a day early! I like doing this, it avoids last minute stress, but that doesn't mean this coursework was stress free either.

I've still got a fair amount of work on my plate, but the load has been lightened and so is now more manageable. This means I'll be able to engage more with the game and get back to enjoying it rather then worrying about letting you all down with late posting and such.

Yay for getting things done!

Subject: The special hell? Not today.

John had come down to the hangar in a mood, something or somebody in the bridge had ticked him off but he wasn’t saying what or who. He just helped Willow and Cheung with their preparations then stood by the door controls waiting for the onslaught of unexpected guests. A slight bump and a green light announced they’d docked with the Star and John, being the closest, pushed a button to drop the loading ramp and raise the internal hatchway door. Beyond the door was a short passageway leading to one of the Star’s doors. Dazed and confused people staggered into the cargo bay like livestock into a pen. John stood back and ushered folk along, counting as he did, as Willow greeted the new passengers and directed them about the cargo hold. There were far more then forty here, and no casualties to speak of. John hoped the casualties hadn’t been put into escape pods, escape pods needed to be saved for those with better chances of survival then casualties, and John also doubted the Star had sufficient medical personnel to put one with each casualty in each escape pod… mind you there were only 17 escape pods so it might have been possible. The Start’s captain, the apparently drunk gentleman in old military dress, seemed to do things differently to how John would have, or would have advised doing them.

As the cargo bay filled and as the drunk captain and his aid started organising the mob John was freed up to see to what injuries people presented. There were some cuts and bruises, but nothing particular to get worried about, except a potentially bad cut on some old dear’s arm. Recalling his years old medical training John cleaned and bandaged the wound best he could, ignoring the chatter around him until somebodies warm hand landed on his cheek. John finished the bandage then looked up as the hand slid down along the contour of his cheekbone and down his neck, then down the buttons of his shirt until the hand met his waistcoat.
“I’m Amber Sunshine. Are you a doctor?” said the girl in a voice as soft as her hand.
He looked at her, craftily watching the rise and fall of her chest, as she looked deeply into his eyes, taking her hand from his shirt he held it in both his own, casually holding a few fingers across her wrist. He kept silent, not answering her question, knowing she wasn’t particularly interested in his answer.
“I think I need to be examined thoroughly. You got someplace ... private we could go?” she continued.
Her question was unexpected, and almost took John off guard. He hadn’t been with anybody for a long while, for too much of a long while, and this girl was offering herself to him. And she was pretty, she was very appealing. It would have been the easiest thing in the ‘Verse to say ‘Yes’ and head off to his quarters, but instead this is what John said. “You’re perspiring a little and your pupils are slightly dilated. Your breathing is also irregular and your heart beat seems elevated.” He let go of her hand and looked her in the eye with the bored sternness one would expect from a doctor telling you to ‘take it easy’ after an operation or a dentist letting you know you should be flossing more regularly. “I think you’ll be fine. I’ve got to finish up here but if you want a check over wait around the medbay.” John then asked the older woman to hold her injured arm across her waist as he tied it into a sling. She probably didn’t need one, but people seemed to like the comfort of slings and it couldn’t do any harm.

Waiting for Willow to be free he quietly whispered to her that there may be a girl waiting around the medbay, and that she’d asked him for an ‘examination’, hinting that she’d be better to send the girl off then himself.

EDIT: Changed "cold" to "bored", and general grammatical and spelling mistakes. Hope nobody minds.

I'm sorry for how late my post is. I wanted to tick off a bit of coursework before getting it written (it was just ideas in my head before tonight) and that unfortunately tool me longer then I'd wanted.

Again I'm sorry, but unfortunately my situation persists. I've still got lots of coursework but now the big important bit it out the way I should be able to get back on top of it all.

I'm going to have to break it to you at some point, so if you are interested I have used a ROT13 cypher to code what John is going to do below. If you are interested it's there below, if you are not and want to wait for the post then just don't decrypt the cypher. (I have also removed spaces so you'll need to put them in for it to make sense)

I was actually talking about John and the Kate Hudson look-a-like.

You just had to have a pretty girl ask John if he's a doctor didn't you?
You do realize that he's got the straight shooter complication so, in a cargo bay full of worried passengers, he's either going to fail at lying about being a doctor or tell the truth and admit that he isn't?

Subject: To answer a question

Yes Aryn, Alacrity did give me some numbers in secret. I assumed that he'd given you the same numbers but never mind. As I am normally one of the later people to post I wanted to make sure that everybody knows the numbers we may be talking about because, in my next post, John is going to be mumbling something along the lines of the cruise liner carrying hundreds of people and only half of them getting into escape pods. Mentioning in his mumblings: 17 ten-man escape pods, a crew of 100, a passenger capacity of over 200, and an idiot captain not even willing to plan for the possibility of the imminent death of himself and many of his crew.

EDIT: I agree with Eol about the capacity of the Roc. The book puts an standard firefly's capacity at about 10, possibly 20 if you double up the rooms or 36 if you include the passenger capacity of the two short-range shuttles. Even the personnel carrier variant's capacity is only 50, or 100 if hot bunking, but the Roc isn't a personnel carrier.

It is off those numbers that I have based John's reaction and his apparent willingness to accept that they won't be able to save everybody.

I'll also note that John mentioned the Roc sending out a distress signal for the Star because of a couple of reasons 1) The Roc is fully operation and John could probably boost the signal range to great distances, 2) we only picked up the distress signal from the Star when we were in visual range (Tess had already seen the explosion) about 15-20 minutes away, and 3) the distress signal from the Star is probably highly distorted by the radiation from the presumably leaking reactor core and the pings from the escape pods are also interfering with communications. I'm not saying that the Captain of the Star would know all this, but John is assuming that any Captain worth his salt would be aware of these things as possibilities.

EDIT 2: Nowhere have I been told the Star could have a leaky reactor core, that is just an assumption I and John have made on our own accord to go along with the "barely have a hull and no guarantee that something else won't go up like a roman candle" thing.

As Willow and Fu, and everybody else will soon find out the Roc will be taking on significantly more then 40 people. John will make it clear, by complaining about the captain of the other ship, that we are to expect closer to the greater then 100 people mark.

I can understand the position of the captain, but I honestly can't see how the Roc can take on that many passengers. Hard choices have to be made.

Anyway, a ship full of angry rich people, crew from the liner, and a thief... things are going to be entertaining. Particularly as John has Ped off Captain Edward by planning for the worst. Sometimes you need to leave people behind, and hope and prey that they'll be OK until more help comes.

Once John has helped Willow set up the medical bay he'll go and help her in the cargo bay.

After John had received the reply from Willow, Tess spoke calmly to him.

“Mr. Ryan, please remember that I was a pilot for a number of years in the war, and as such have developed the ever lovin’ ability to both fly and listen to the radio at the same time. Don’t underestimate my capability to be assess’n the situation, because believe you me di di, I’ve done flown into much worse on less information.”

Stony faced she turned back to the console and spoke again.

“It might’n be a good idea fer you to go join Miss Willow and help her prepare to take on those forty odd casualties. I’m sure that Capt’n Wyatt and I can handle the bridge, and it do sound like she’ll be needin’ all the help we can muster.”

All John could do to reply was to look quizzically at here, his eyes considering her under new light. Speaking in a tone hard to place, a dumfounded drawl somehow simultaneously shocked and quizzical, he questioned Tess. "You're picking now to argue mei-mei?" He paused, still watching Tess, before twisting in his seat and, in a much lighter but still serious tone, asked something of their Captain. "Permission to leave the bridge Sir?"

(With permission John leaves and makes for the med bay)

I'd be up for that if I can stretch to it. I'll try to get my response written early this week if I can.

And about adding some flavor, I can't see how the whole crew would be rainbows and sunshine all the time either. Fortunately John isn't adverse to stepping down from fights and keeps things in, what he would call, the proper perspective. Expect something along the lines of "You're picking now to argue?"

EDIT: Just noticed, the face my avatar is pulling right now is very appropriate for the above line of speech.

Thanks Aryn.

Late edits for the win! I've just included a short bit at the end of my post detailing some conversation with the captain. It should help add some gravity to the situation... because I've done some number crunching and even with 17 ten-man escape pods over-full there will still be a good number of people left on the Star of Sihnon, more then likely over 100, and there is no way the Roc can take on that many. Fates be good the Star can last out as the Roc calls for additional aid.

Also, along the lines of numbers, John will suggest that the crew share quarters, preferably the ones towards the prow of the Roc, as to open up more of the passenger dorms for casualties. You could, at a push, get two or more in each probably and we can likely squeeze a good number of the more able casualties into the short-range shuttles if push came to shove.

EDIT: also today, once everybody has posted, I hope to get up some of Johns responses to people. Although that might have to wait for next week. It'll be interesting to see how Captain Wyatt takes John taking up such an authoritative role... hopefully he won't get the chain of command and beat John with it.

Subject: Postage

I am aware that some people have been waiting on me, and I'm sorry. RL is busy for me, as I have said before, so waiting on me is a bad idea.

I will try to put up here in future the bare bones of why John is going to do so you all have some idea of his actions if you'd like to know before I post but adding flesh to them bones takes time for me (often time spread out over the whole week). I know you are being patient with me, and I'm very thankful for it, and I will always do my utmost to make sure I post within a week of the update.

Regarding my post, I hope it's clear what is John's speech and what is not John's speech. If you'd like I can do my old thing of putting my character's speech in italics bold to make it clearer.

I also hope that I've not taken liberties with this post, as I know in my last update I did take a couple which I needed to edit out after they were pointed out. If I have just say so and I'll make the appropriate changes.

EDIT: BTW Eol, I very much like Fu Sheng as a character and the detail in your posts. I'm sorry I've not paid much attention to him in my post.

EDIT 2: "The "dead" of the Yardiff Bey party were Yardiff and the four man crew of the ASREV. I was reading back and noticed some were afraid that innocent people were killed. Certainly the sheriff would have confirmed this over the time that passed between missions."
Cheers Al, this knowledge will certainly improve John's feelings (not quite the right word but hopefully you know what I mean) on the event. He still doesn't recall it as anything overly positive though, after all people did die.

Subject: Well, it's Sunday again

Eisley Moss Spaceport, Early morning after the meeting
John was wake with (presumably) the rest of the crew the morning after the Captain, Tess, and Willow had met with the farmers and sheriff at the double D. Shrink rapped skids of foodstuff were slowly loaded into the main cargo bay as the Rocinante got fuelled up for the journey a head. They were to take the cargo to Deadwood, but via the long way. John knew enough to not ask specifically why they were going the long way round, or why they’d taken on a new passenger for the trip, but he had his suspicions. Nevertheless he helped Tess plot their route through the black, it should take them 15 days but fates be willing they’d be able to shave some time off. John wasn’t keen on being cooped up inside the Roc for that long, even if he’d been on longer trips he knew how claustrophobic it got, and he knew he’d be yearning for some fresh air after the first week anyhow.

The new arrival, Fu Sheng, was a short chap and seemed deeply respectful to all. Mind you, a Buddhist monk, which is what John tool him for almost as soon as meeting him, would be. They had little in common, or at least John assumed they had little in common. A cloistered life was something at odds with the life he’d lived, and he’d lost faith in any gods years ago. That said, the man was nice enough and they made small talk when they found themselves together. It was interesting to see how the others reacted to the newcomer though.

The Black, three days from Beaumonde
So far the trip had gone smoothly, but John was all aware that they hadn’t passed beyond the long arm of the law yet. Something they were all reminded of when an Alliance patrol boarded searching for two fugitives. Truth be told John thought they were after the cargo, having decided the foodstuffs must contain something of questionable legality, as did some of the rest of them apparently, but the purple bellies didn’t even check it. Whoever Simon and River Tam were they must be important for patrols to be so preoccupied, either that or the feds were so fed up of searching ships that they were just getting lazy.

The Black, seven days from Beaumonde
Day seven, the day that John and Tess had reckoned they’d get out of range of even the high powered signals. John was busy taping up more cables when it happened, his datalibrary beeped alerting him to an update and sure enough it told him it had lost cortex connection. He casually walked prowards (towards the prow) and entered the cockpit. Testing a few functions at the co-pilots station confirmed it, they were on their own. Radio signals only, from now until a few days from Deadwood. A short while later John hears a cry from the pilots station, Tess was pointing out the cockpit towards what John first took to be a supernova. ‘Nice spot’ thought John, before realising that the explosion was no way a supernova but something much closer going bang. Long range sensors were picking up multiple heat readings, bright white spots in the midst of the cold black, and then Tess instinctively flicked on the radio as lights began to flash.
"Zzztttzzttztztz.....Mayday! Mayday....Zztztztztz. This is the Star of Sihnon ... zzttzz ... liner...zzztzttzt ...please help."

The signal was bad, they couldn’t make much of it out except that it was a mayday called. Adjusting some power feeds John was able to boost the signal. It was still filled with static but the full message was now decipherable.

"This is the Star of Sihnon Cruise Liner. We are badly damaged by internal explosion. Starboard escape pods are lost. There are not enough for all passengers. We need help! In the name of Buddha, God and the 'verse please can someone hear me!!!!"

John’s orders came quick, the Captain didn’t seem to need to think about it, although John wouldn’t have thought to do anything different. He pushed the ‘call’ button on the co-pilot mike and made the return call. “This is John Ryan of the firefly transport Rocinante, we have received your mayday call and are inbound. Over.” The replay came a few moments later, the distance causing a delay in the signals being sent and received, giving John time to do some quick maths.

"Thank the lords above, This is Captain Edward Smith of the Five Star Cruise Line, are you close by? We have sustain serious damage and the starboard has suffered a casade intergrity failure. Can you take on survivors as the explosions has wrecked so many escape pods that we no longer have enough for all the passengers?"

The captain had abandoned radio protocol, things must be bad. Although the fact the first they knew of the situation was an explosion was an indicator of that. Depressing the call button again John replied. “We will be with you in 20 minutes Captain.” John was taking care to be clear with his replies, it was impossible to know how much was getting distorted by the explosions radiation or any potentially damaged receiving equipment. “How many casualties do you have and where do you advise docking?” Again there was a delay in the reply, slightly longer then before but it still came.

"At least 40 so far, internal coms are patchy and there’s lots of panic. Our upper stern docking station has a flange seal, we’re routing passengers there now.”

The upper stern of the liner, that was their new destination. Or be it a temporary one for a humanitarian effort. Ignoring any interjections and violating the chain of command John issued ‘suggestion’ to Tess “Upper stern hatch, hard burn.” before getting back to Captain Smith, having remembered Wyatt’s order. “What’s your situation? Were you attacked and do you have a damage report?”

Using the time lapse between asking and the reply coming John tapped the intercom to the medical bay with the hope of catching Willow. “Expect at least 40 casualties, I’ll be done once we dock with the cruise liner.” As it turned out the Star of Sihnon hadn’t been attacked, the primary power conduit had blown causing a cascade of catastrophic systems failures. The main fuel tanks had ignited and the following explosions had shaken the liner to the core, damaging her hull integrity and destroying the starboard escape pods. They’d launched the port escape pods at or above capacity but the ship carried 240 passengers and 100 crew, it was probably safe to assume most of the passengers had been safely evacuated from the ship but assumptions got people killed in emergency situations. For the rest of their approach John kept on the coms with Captain Smith, relaying information to Wyatt and Willow where necessary so they could coordinate everything (unless John is ordered to help with the preparations). "Captain. We are a small ship, we can only take so many. Do you have life support?"
(Assuming a yes)
"Good, how long will you be able to last out? Once we've taken on as many as we can, will you have time for us to call for help?"
(Honestly not sure what the answer will be, but it only changes the tone of John's next request)
"Keep order on your ship. We'll be with you soon and don't want to take on a panicked mob. Tell everyone we have plenty of room for all but will take on casualties first. If there are any family groups left we'll take the children if we can." It was a chilling request.

Subject: Stunting

Hi All

I think this is the right place for this so I'll launch right into it.

I've recently joined a Scion (White Wolf) game, and am enjoying it a lot. It's good to RP with mates in RL again. Unfortunately we are coming up to our 3rd session, which means the GM has finished assessing our character's individual and group capabilities and so the real challenges will begin to come. His own words were "I've been going easy on you because I don't know what you're all capable of."

I think, generally, we are up to the challenge but I would like some assistance from all you guys on the inn. As some of you might be aware White Wolf games have a rules prevision for stunting, doing cool stuff, which improves you chances of success. I'm generally OK with it, but it's hard to come up with ways to stunt in combat, particularly as my guy fights with a gun, Beretta Model 93 Raffica if it's of interest.

Any ideas of how I could stunt things in fights would be awesome, I know most of the stuff should and will come off the cuff, but I'd like a couple of standbys in case I can't think of anything. Feel free to 'ignore' the laws of physics for this, but try to be original; nothing sucks more then saying "I do X, just like Y did in Z."

EDIT: I will also post up successful stunts from the game.

I think we are on the same page, but although John has what could be termed an "Alliance perspective" he doesn't have a high opinion of the Alliance either. It takes two to fight. In his mind the Alliance is just as to blame for the war as the Independents, but the Independents started it.

And although the early 30s isn't old, he has seen a fair amount and it's said that war ages people. He's living a desperately different life from that of his younger self.
