I'm not a great fan of posting according to a set order, but it may be an idea. I am as keen to keep this game running as anyone but I don't think we should alienate others by posting when we get fed up of waiting for them.

Lord know I feet a bit alienated just when you two, TO and Chessic, posted and even god moded a little over my character (I'll forgive it for now but please don't do it again) so DA must feel must worse then me as she seems to be suffering from writers block and hasn't put a post in for a wile.

Well I was thinking of filling the rouge role by being a Tome Rader style rouge... but as rogue is takening I'm looking at a fighter of some sorts if that will fit in.

Topic: Forgotten Realms: Edge of Darkness
Subject: Valandril

As he was scouting he was aware of a person behind him, he could hear the odd rustling of leaves as he himself approached the bandits camp but whoever it was held back a distance away from the camp whereas he had snuck as close to it as possible. It was only returning to the group he found it was the man dressed entirely in blue. He gave a quick description of what he had seen and then the Halfling piped in with the helpful comment “I am more than happy to slice that ones throat.”. Thankfully the man in blue spoke with a plan before the Halfling could be reproached. Valandril simply nodded when it was suggested they should return to gather the rope and manacles from the camp and nodded again in agreement of the plan. Quietly he wondered why the manacles hadn’t been used in the first place, it seemed foolish of the man to have not mentioned them in the first place, when the bandit was being tied up.

The others had already agreed to the plan so it was decided, he would return to the camp with the man in blue then, when they traded prisoners, would hide behind one of the large trees to the east of the camp. In case it went wrong, well hopeful it would work so that noting could go badly wrong, but there seemed to be a lack of forethought as to what could happen if there is a fight… were they all to do their own thing? Why had a trip rope if things went wrong and you attacked them? Perhaps it would be better to draw the bandits out of the camp site and into the trees in case it came to a battle?

Back at their camp Valandril grabbed the rope he’d returned to get but ignored the blue man’s ‘suggestion’ that he should return to the group and quickly packed him bedroll into his backpack and slung it over his shoulders. The time he’d spent on the run had taught him to keep his own equipment with him at all times, just in case. His training for the rebel army, as they were now called, and his upbringing also meant he could survive on very little and hence his pack was lighter than many other people’s. Mostly because he didn’t carry odds and sods like rope and manacles. The two factors combined meant that he could travel and fight with his backpack on his shoulders.

Seeing that the man in blue had pulled the manacles from his bag and how had them in his hand they hurried back to the others where they had been making the preparations. Render had presumably been hoisted into a tree and was out of sight and Basyl held the prisoner so that he could be manacled and gagged. The man in blue and Basyl then proceeded to tie the rope around two tree and set on untying and slipping the manacles onto the bandit as he began to circle round to the side of the camp so he could hide. As he did so the man in blue caught his eye and explained for a second time his part in the plan. For the love of The Seldarine the plan had already been explained. Anyone that needed something explaining twice was a fool and shouldn’t take part in whatever was being explained, particularly if it was something as important as a battle strategy. Valandril was reminded briefly of being back with his clan, as they were driving back the drow assaults on their settlement. Everyone warrior knew what to do, when and how to do it, so victory would be won decisively and without casualties. This human, with or without his planning, knew little to nothing of that kind of discipline. Why would we have two ears but one mouth if we were not meat to listen twice as much as talk?

Valandril was in place and ready, an arrown notched on his bowstring ready to pull back as he darted out from his hiding place and teach both the bandits and his companions the meaning of a strong bow and a swift arrow.

((OOC Note: Val is hiding behind the large tree to the north east of the big rock in the east section of the map.))

Subject: Yay for posting!

To his gratitude Basyl had asked the surviving bandit the elf’s name, and the bandit had answered. Syle, part of an elven name, likely the only part of the original name that could be pronounced in the common tongue. How people conversed in such a tongue Valandril couldn’t be sure, it lacked a certain fluidity and grace. Valandril looked down at the man as Basyl sat him up and bound the man’s hands, and then watched as Basyl and Leanderia hefted him to his feet. She then led the way from the camp as they began their short track to the reported bandit camp as he returned to the fire to pull it apart in a meagre attempt to extinguish the flames.

Leaving the campsite himself Valandril followed the heavy breathing, cursing, snapping twigs and rustling undergrowth to the rest of the motley group he had become a part of. Night was fully upon them now and they crept through the forest, in the distance the eerie and pressing stillness was punctuated by the barking, growling and baying of predators, closer the silence was punctuated by the comments of the captured bandit: "It's just bout a mile in this direction, give 'er take a few steps either way.", "You're all gonna get your asses kicked.." and "Just let me go and be on your way, and you won't die."

None of the group headed these words but the crimson stain from where Valandril had struck the bandit with his dagger was growing almost with every step and the man was visibly in need of healing magic or good bedrest. Not wishing to hear what else the bandit may have to say Valandril decided to scout a head and find the camp using the bandit’s simple direction. The girl had done well to run a mile in her armour; he certainly wouldn’t wear such encumbering protection, even for a short time. He indicated to the group that he would find the bandit camp, and come back tell them what he found, saying that he’ll go alone in case it was a trap, but he doubted that as should anyone want them captured or dead then they surly would wait for them to be asleep before attacking.

Leaving the group behind as he got closer to where the bandit camp should be he began thinking of how a possible slaughter could be avoided. He wouldn’t trust these bandits, he had learnt not to trust anyone, human or not, unless they both had no choice but to trust each other, but still they had one of theirs so that could help. They could trade prisoners, or simply demand to have the family Leanderia had entrusted herself with to be released, but if they were outnumbered then it was the bandits that held the cards. More than likely it would turn into a fight, but they would need something over the bandits, something they could turn to their advantage.

As Valandril thought he crept closer to the bandits’ camp and hid behind a large bush. Cover was sparse but three sides of the camp were open to the forest whereas the forth, the side directly opposite where the direction he had come from, was a sheer cliff face. It was the advantage he had hoped for. There were five in the group now, it wasn’t the best number but it was enough. From his position he could see three large tents and two bandits but could hear more voices coming from the tents. He wondered if he could climb one of the nearby trees without being spotted to gain a better vantage point and then returned back to the rest of his group to tell them what he’d found and suggest his ideas.

(In Elven) “The camp’s up against a large cliff face, there are three large tents and although I could only see two men I could hear more. There isn’t much cover as you get closer to the camp but there are large trees, bushes and rocks to hide behind. Ask Leanderia how many she thinks there are at the camp, if it’s more than our numbers then it might work best to draw them out and separate them rather than attacking the camp itself.”

((OOC: Valandril will give any more specific details about the bandit came when/if he is asked for them.))

Right, spot check to see if Valandril can determin which tent the prisoners are in... likly to be the one that appears to be guarded however.

I'd also like to know, as I think it could prove to be helpful, how climb-able the trees are and if they are big enough to suport someone.

If the rocks are big enough to hide behind would also be useful...

Subject: Dear Reader

I normally hate to read rants, even if they are the rants of my friends, but I must say that I love the topic of this particular rant and feel that this topic ain't one that is talked about much.

OK, sorry. Wanted to see how many of those particular words you ranted about could be put into a single sentence. I'm sure someone could do better than my pitiful attempt but what ho!

Now, to confront the issue you have presented before us.

I am in favour of the colloquial use of any words in the English Language. Let us not forget that gay now means homosexual and that both America and the United Kingdom are two countries divided by a common language, gas is petrol, sidewalk is pavement, hood is bonnet, etc.

English is as it is today because it is a living and mongrel language. What we recognise as English today Shakespeare would be appalled at, what future generations will call English I am sure we will be appealed at. No one can change this or stop this, to attempt would be as foolhardy as trying to hold back the tides by standing on a beach. English needs to change, to evolve, because it is only through that change that it will survive.

EDIT: Anyone should feel free to speak the English language how they wish, so long as someone else knows what they are talking about.

Subject: Val's actions for the DMs update

Jozan, in your update could you include Val scouting the bandit camp?

Val is going to scout around the edge of the bandit camp looking out for where the bandits are gathered, positions of things in the camp and looking for silhouettes inside the tents to see if he can work out where the family is.

Val will keep well inside the edge of the forest and take his time scouting, no point in rushing it.

More evil or less evil then making him lead us to the bandit camp and then killing everyone including him?

Yer, your right. Killing a prisoner won't sit well with many of our characters.

Emergency planning meeting needed between the whole group!

Val is going to propose that we trade prisoners, the bandit leader for the family.

EDIT: But just to make sure they don't double cross us we should have snipers hiding in the brush.

I've got to ask...

Is Leanderia going to lead the way to the bandit camp or will the captured bandit leader?

Because, if Leanderia knows the way then it makes sense to 'dispose' of the bandit leader... unless someone has some plan involving him.

Topic: Forgotten Realms: Edge of Darkness
Subject: Please read slowly with sorrow in your heart.

Valandril stood from his simple rite and turned to the group, his thin face etched with mild grief. This elf, although they had not known each other and had been enemies, had been a brief link with his clan. Sure there had been elves in the city, but they were not living like the elves of his clan. He, Valandril, had lived the life this dead elf had lived. He had tried to run for the world and tried to live a life with those on the run, it had almost claimed him and now it had claimed the like of one of his brothers. Not just was the elf killed, but the elf was killed by one who would have his allegiance, one who he had just fought to save, and one who now asked for his help. Perhaps he would not give his help out of spite, perhaps he shouldn’t save humans when one had not spared an elf. What will I be then? he thought to himself Does that make me a worse for refusing to help from petty spite? His mind wandered back to a few seconds ago, to words he had overheard Render say. “as to what reason we help this family? Will they make us rich? Or is it a personal quest for yourself?” He decided his mind had been made for him and he answered Render in a sorrowful tone.

((Halfling))”We help because we are better.”
((Elven))”We help because your spirit can be saved.”

In honesty Valandril would have preferred silence for the small rite he performed for the dead elf, but these folk where not his folk and didn’t know his customs. “Ignorance is the blade others carry with ignorance.” one of his clan’s elders had once said to him, when he was young. He walked over to stand next to Basyl, then bent down so he was leaning over the bandit and jerked his dagger out the man’s chest.

((Elven))”Please ask him the name of the elf.”
The request was directed at Basyl.

((OOC: I've sort of decided to leave stage directions in the title as to how you should read my posts... is this a good idea? You tell me.))

I know, Val is going to go after the bandits, even if he hasn't said so yet, but talk on chat turned to this subject when I was talking to T_O so I though no harm in trying to work it out here. Oh well.

If I were a certain Napoleonic cartoonist I might do a cartoon of our Render, with Valandril saying to Render "I cannot but conclude you to be one of the most pernicious little odious reptiles that nature ever suffered to crawl upon the surface of the Earth"

Yes, it's a Terry Pratchett book!

For the watch we need to work this out. I think watches of two hours long, but one hour long is doable. Val only needs to sleep for 4 hours as well so that can reduce the need for people to watch.

EDIT: Should have said this before, I thought it was obvous, this is for after we have tracked down the bandits and rescued the family. I know it's getting ahead of ourselves but it's about the only thing we have left to think about and it'll be better to work it out between us all here rather then numerous IC post... never mind.

Subject: A dead elf

Valandril dispatches the bandit Uryuu’s arrow had failed to stop with an arrow of his own, with a skilled shot and Solonor Thelandira’s blessing the arrow found it’s mark and sank deep into the humans flesh, who then tumbled forward causing the shaft to dig deeper into his body when his frail body hit the hard pine needle lined earth. Valandril may have found the humans demise comical had the gods not helped in it. Looking up from the corpse before him he spied that the other bandits had been dispatched, and spied the woman spitting on the corpse of the elf. Such dishonour to ones fallen enemy, how dishonourable some humans could be he had not known.

He lowered his bow and walked towards the disgraced corpse of the elf, passing the woman as he did so. She had thanked them for their help with eloquence and identified herself as a Lady. Valandril had picked up on the stress on Lady, as opposed to the normal way humans said lady, but knew not why she had done so surly is was obvious she was female; with her shaped breastplate and close-fitting black leather leggings. Perhaps this woman was called Lady? he though. As they passed he gave her a hard look, a hard look that saw straight into her amber eyes. The look’s meaning was perhaps unclear, but to Valandril it was a look of both respect and discontentment.

Valandril knelt beside his dead kin and close the un-named elf’s eyes. He then removed the two swords from the man’s grip, using the dagger to cut a lock of the man’s hair, and placed them on the ground. It was then, after talking behind him to Uyruu, that she began searching the bodies for weapons. She came to him and the un-named elf last, before she could take the two weapons Valandril offered them up to her and spoke, mainly in elvish but Lady was said in the common tongue as he was her name.
“They are yours to use, not to borrow, Lady.”
He then turned back to the elf, who had now bleed dry, and pulled his corpse to the trunk of a nearby tree to remove the elf’s shirt and armour. Redressing the elf in the shirt he had removed Valandril then laid the un-named elf at the foot of the tree and covered him using a near-by blanket. It was a simple resting place, but the body would be returned to the world and this clearing was a good site to die, even if death in battle is not desired by any elf. A prayer was then offered to Corellion Larethian to speed the elf’s soul to Arvandor.

((OOC: I know this is a lot of actions for one post, and I’m sorry about that. I’m also sorry about not putting too much in about listing to Leanderia but honestly Val could care more for her at the moment.

Just a note for anyone wanting to talk to the, now stable, bandit leader, Valandril will want to know the name of the un-named elf and will ask for that to be found out. I’d get Val to ask the bandit leader that myself but that would make this post even longer.))

Things I LOVE about this map:

"b1 is the guy in scalemail who is on his knees trying to figure out how not to die"
"A cool pine tree"
"Another pine"
"Another oak"
"Forest and stuff" and "More forest and stuff"
The fact that you've spelt bedroll with and without the space in the middle
The fact you thought Render began with a "U"

I give this map 7 out of a possible 5.

EDIT: I would now like to make a Knowledge Geography check to find out why this woodland is in a sutable location for both Oak and Pine trees to grow.
