I used the html code
<.font color="color">TEXT<./font>

But without the full stops in there. I don't know any other way to do it though, so if you could show me how you do it that would be grand.

I hate double posting.

My contribution to Tann's and my back post is now sent to Tann, sorry for it being a good while late. (BTW: If Tann is good with it might be good to get a little bit from Bromern in it, just when Wolf introducing John to Wyatt as wanting a shot as pilot.)

I can't see why not if you want too... I can't see why John wouldn't be familiar enough with basic (off-the-shelf) electronic locks to offer some general advice, such as suggesting using the reset button (despite that being a bit of a security floor), but nothing specific.

Tann: Sorry for my lateness PMing you the first part of our co-op back post. I'll send it asaIwi.

Nice update. Been looking forward to it and it didn't disappoint. Safe to say that Gator won't be getting the job I think, and it sounds like Wolf and John have their work cut out keeping all hell from breaking loose anyway... them houses that keep charging about have good reason to be running scared.

Just a note before anybody posts, as professional as John would like to be I think that Gator's antics will result in some considerable swearing from both Wolf and John. (Am I right Tann?)

My first RP post in ages, it seems.

Anyway, just edited it to move the OOC stuff to here.

I know it's of an odd introduction post, seeing as how I haven’t actually described my character apart from giving the unimportant detail that he’s got an earth-that-was Southern English accent. I don’t want to presume anything here but when Wolf does pull himself out from under Rocinante he’ll see John crouched next to the Roc in smart shoes, dark trousers and a dark waistcoat and jacket with an open collar (top button not done up on his shirt). John’s got short black curly hair and pale blue eyes with a kind face but wearing a neutral expression which rarely changes, he speaks and carries himself professionally but with some colloquialisms and slang, appearing like a core-worlder who’s started to go a bit native. He also has a gunslinger’s holster and his old service pistol strapped to his right leg over the top of his suit trousers, and a large backpack next to him leaning against the Roc. When Wolf asks about John he’ll introduce himself and ask what’s up with the ship, state that he wants to join as the new pilot but that he’s a dab hand with technical “stuff”.
Tann, if we can I’d like to RP a bit between us but I don’t think I’ve left enough time between posting and Al wanting to move things along.

EDIT: Sorry for not interacting with Ash Ody.

Subject: Enter John

Beaumonde, Eisley Moss Town, Yesterday

The scanner’s read light shown through the narrow slit as the machine read John’s last payslip, the former message of “Good day. Welcome to the Alliance Central Banking Network. How can we help you?” on the display screen was replaced with a breakdown of the payslips value, including the tax and service charges deductible from it. John’s last job was meant to pay 400 credits, but after parts and tax the machine spat out just about two hundred. Slipping the notes into his wallet John turned, contemplating finding the new work that had so far evaded him, and left. Downcast, thoughts of what work he could do, what work he might find, how much that work might pay, filled his mind as he walked home. It wasn’t until John reached the building his apartment was in did the Hun cross his mind again, leaning against the forward wall of the building, not ten steps from the entrance, were some of the Hun’s thugs. A small group of them, one bloke about his own height with greasy hair and three tall, thick set men, with bold heads. Making no effort to avoid them John walked straight towards the building’s entrance, greeting them a short way away, before being frogmarched into a side ally, the shorter one giving a long whistle as they did. “Nice pad you got ‘ere, boss’ll be pleased ta know.” The other thugs guffawed stupidly. “We’ll be takin’ you’re obligations.” The shorter one smiled and stretched out the last word, it sounded alien coming from his mouth. Reluctantly, but dutifully, John pulled out his wallet and began counting out the bills. “Forty credits, two months’ worth.” He handed the sheaf over to the shorter one. “You’re [english, southern] accent annoys me John.” The shorter one commented, counting the bills for himself. “We’ll ‘ave an extra ten ‘cos of it.” Grudgingly John handed over the extra money, knowing they’d lay him out if he didn’t forfeit it. After sacrificing his tribute, and with a “Let’s go boys.”, the thugs shove past John leaving him to ascend to his apartment with lighter pockets.

Inside upstairs, in his poky apartment, John places his toolbox on the floor, empties his pockets, removes and hangs up his suit jacket, then logs onto the cortex to access the port registry to see a few new ships dock overnight, but no notices about work or crew needed. Just like most other nights and mornings for the past ages. Fates know why captains should post out for work when most have crew to do it John thinks to himself. Checking the nights episodes have downloaded and that his datalibrary has updated he drags himself up from the chair, carefully pulls on his suit jacket, and picks up his laundry to take downstairs. Having dropped off his suits for overnight cleaning John returns, picks up his datalibrary, and begins reading the latest updates and journals from his subscription list, the inane soaps and dramas he’s downloaded providing a background to alleviate the sense of isolation. Later that evening, with the cortex drivel long finished, John finishes reading the updates and replaces his shirt and trousers for night clothes intent on sleep. Siting on the edge of his bed he administers a meta-diphenhydramine patch, slips under the bedclothes, and falls into a tranquilizer induced sleep.

Beaumonde, Eisley Moss Town, 8:00 am

Come morning, after washing and showering, John checked the port records again, this time more from habit then the need to find work. Not much was different from last night, a few ships had left and a few arrived, but what caught his attention were the two jobs being advertised, this was a good sign. The first was a job for a mechanic, not an engineer, but the second was a job he could do. A ship that had come in last night, the Rocinante, a model 3 firefly, was suddenly and strangely in need of a new pilot. It didn’t say why the last pilot had ‘left’, and it wasn’t any of his business till he got the job, but he’d try to find out. The notice did say that the captain was holding interviews at one. Spirits lifted by the good fortune John resolved to go for it, but decided he might not turn up immediately so he could avoid most of the buhn dahn that would try out. Dressing, tucking his newtech sidearm into its concealed holster under his waistcoat and strapping his gunslinger’s rig and service pistol to his right thigh, John grabbed a fruity oaty bar for breakfast then went to collect his laundry.

Beaumonde, Eisley Moss Space Port, 1:30ish pm

After eating near the port area John pushed his way towards the landing bays, the surging crowds seemingly intent on blocking his way, but after so long in Eisley Moss he’d got used to the masses and mules that populated the port area. The right landing bay wasn’t hard to find, although not the biggest ships around fireflys were, are, iconic. Entering the bay John looked up at the Rocinante ‘s bridge, sitting proud and prominent, well forward and above the main airlock. This cheap, popular, common as dirt starship had helped colonize the rim and taken humans further than ever before. There were still a fistful of, presumably, applicants waiting around the ships boarding ramp, not wishing to join them John decided he’d give the ship he’d, fates be kind, soon be piloting the once over. As well-built as these old things were there was always something up with them, some quirk or something the ship had acquired, as if it were a person, over its years of service. About half-way round some ja hwo ma jung hwa attracted his attention. “Liou koe shway duh biao-tze huh hoe-tze duh bun ur-tze Ching-wah TSAO duh liou mahng!!”. Looking around quickly he saw a toolbox, and a pair of feet sticking out from under the ship. By the swearing it could only be the ship’s mechanic, John had only known mechanics to swear like that. Crouching down near the mechanic’s feet John saw the interlocutor and picked it up. "This what you need?" John inquired holding the tool out so that the man under the ship could take it.

I've got mine half-written, I told Tann that I'd have finished it by last night but time was not on my side. Just so that everybody understands why I am being slow it is because I will be returning to Uni come the 9th of September to start my 3rd and final year of my BSc (Hons) undergraduate course. This means that I am writing my final year project, a 10,000 word essay on which 20% of my entire grade depends. I will keep up with posting, this is one of the few releases I have currently so I don't intend to fall behind or drop out.

Anyway, just a little heads up to why I am not going to have posts up in the first couple of days of an update.

That's a great poster Bromern, loving it even if you're dismissive of it being a photo-manipulation. In response to it spoiling what Al's got planned for my character, I haven't read the post yet, but I'm sure we can work around it. My fault for not being quick enough with the posting and such.

I'm still working on my post but please don't expect anything fantastic, it's taking time because I've very little of it currently.

EDIT: Now I have read it I'm a bit confused with the timelines as well... if the auditions/interviews started at 1pm that means it's taken Wyatt just 45 minutes to ween the 20 something applicants down to just two and have already started the simulator with Gator, it seems a bit short time but probably doable. My concern is that in that time scale John will have been seen by Wyatt, as an applicant for the pilots job, and be on his way before he meets Wolf when we preferably want John and Wolf to meet before Wyatt has a chance to interview John.

Subject: mini-adventure vs narative

I think a mini adventure sounds more fun then a narrative.

Bromern's suggestion is better then what I have come up with, I'll find a reason for John to visit the Roc but could simply be that as he is looking for work he is trying out with all the new arrivals in the docks. I wanted to avoid that as it is a bit similar as to how Sam joined the crew but if you'll fine with that then we're all shiny.

By way of something that helps out Wolf it could be something part mechanical and part technical that neither or them could work out on their own, or maybe the 03-K36 (Firefly model 3) has some inherent design quirk that John knows of (due to his status as a highly educated gentleman) that Wolf hasn't come across. The latter seems unlikely but I'm just throwing around ideas.

My brother has recently returned from Kenya, he was visiting the Nakuru slums if anybody is interested, and was sharing his photos with us and our extended family. Now my brother is a good camera man, and he had loads of good pictures, including pictures of Water Buffalo. My oldest younger cousin is 11 (I think) and asked why Water Buffalo were called Water Buffalo... now this is a reasonable question until you become aware of the fact she was looking at a picture of two Water Buffalo in front of Lake Nakuru.

(As an additional note my cousin also stated afterwards that she didn't think there was any water in Kenya, but this isn't quite as astounding as the prior face palm moment.)

BTW: Darth Maul was cool, but only because he used a double bladed light saber. Despite that the original trilogy was better... Oh, and hands up if you are looking forwards to The Hobbit!

Subject: Improving the ship

Improving Roc's sensors (alertness) and/or on-board computers (intelligence) might be a decent way for John to come in, introducing him as a Techie rather then as a potential pilot... what do you guys think?

EDIT: I think there are also guide rules either in the main book or Six Shooters and Spaceships.

Sourced from the main book.

Port Fees Page 104
Docking for up to one week, administrative costs, power hookup, septic flush, and fresh water fill costs 1 credit per 100 tons of ship. Each week thereafter is 0.5 credits per hundred tons.
(So I guess the Rocinante's port fees could be around 25 for the first week and 13 for each week thereafter, dependent on the port and not accounting for any additional "fees" the port authorities may wish to levy.)

Improving Attributes Page 114
Making permanent improvements to a ship’s Attributes, Traits, or Skills is not as simple as doing the same for a character. Upgrades require replacement parts, new hardware, shipyard time, and extensive reintegration. In game terms, calculate the difference between the ship’s original (not purchase) price and what her new price would be, based on increasing Complexity. That is the cost for the upgrade, in addition to any Progression Points required. The ship will be in dry dock for one week for every 10,000 credits of the upgrade.
Example: Upgrading Hotaru’s avionics suite and thereby increasing Alertness from d2 to d8 will bring her Attribute point total up to 30, raise her Complexity from Very Low to Low (cost factor 0.6), and increase her original purchase price to 72,000 credits. This is an additional 24,000 credits for the upgrade, which will require two and a half weeks at a shipyard to install (assuming things go smooth).

Dry Dock Page 104
Repairs and maintenance can be contracted from local shipyards (if available). This costs double what similar work would cost for parts and materials alone, and may involve substantial delay if there’s a lot of work already scheduled. But it is much faster than do-it-yourself. The cost is one week per 100,000 credits, rounded up.

So I'm guessing that upgrading Rocinante may be a bit out of reach for the time being. (Grows a mustache and begins planning how to rob a core-world hospital)

EDIT: Reading the rest of page 104 it also gives a guide for fuel costs (5 credits per ton) and suggests that spacehands earn between 10 and 20 credits a month so I've no idea why it suggests 200 credits a month per crew member earlier in the book, must be a typo.

Stupid iPod delete my post instead of editing it.

For reference I was saying that the book list 200/Month but saying that was ridiculous due to 1) it being a tramp ship and 2) bed and board being included.

I agree with you Al. How is the captian meant to make any money paying his crew 200/month?

Awesome post Bromern, can't think how somebody could have better closed Sam's storyline (if that's not a too insensitive way of putting it) and setting up to get some new crew members.

Note about sleeping arrangements: John will be fine in the passenger area if the crew wants him there.

EDIT: I'll read Trish's again and have a think on it.

EDIT 2: John would react, first, with pity. Then with interest and fairly quickly with acceptance. He was the pilot of a Unification War medical ship... he's seen some bad stuff. (Maybe I should have put a few points into discipline as well lol)

Been wondering how's best to suggest this, I think this is good.

When arming your character think how you would feel if you saw them kitted out?
If you're fine with them carrying a belt load of grenades, an assault rifle, or a shotgun then I'm sure that it will be fine for them to carry that stuff around with them. But if, for some reason, you are uncomfortable with somebody armed to the teeth in a public place it may not be a good idea to give them all that stuff. Asides for being legal or not, if somebody is seen with a rifle a passer by might get nervous and call the alliance anyway. Now this might not lead to being bound by law, but it'll sure as hell be an annoyance and will bring you and the whole group to the attention of the purple bellies when it may not be wholly desired.

EDIT: Perhaps this is not be best analogy, I've just remembered I've been playing Red Dead Redemption, which is set in the 'Wild West' much like the rim worlds in firefly, and Marston walks around with an s ton of guns very early on in the game.

If you are going to bring what the books say into it the Mechanical Engineering specialisms specifies mechanical devices, mechanical repairs, and mechanical security systems. The Technical Engineering specialisms specifies technological devices and technical security systems as well as listing Electronics as a specialism.

My dude isn't a computer specialist, he is a technician. The type of person you call to fix broken communications equipment or to repair the damage a sexy confidence trickster has done to your navigational systems. I'm hoping our two characters can work very closely together, with Wolf keeping an eye on the larger mechanical systems of the Rocinante and John keeping an eye on the smaller tecnical systems. A "you keep her flying and I'll keep her flying in the right direction" kinda partnership.

I kinda see Mechanical Engineering as dealing with moving stuff and Technical Engineering as dealing with electrical stuff. I saw that you didn't have a technician, or wouldn't when Sam left, so moved to create a character to fill that role.

Cheers for the welcome!

EDIT: Spellings.

I hope Sam's able to keep his head down and lose the chwen feh feh pi goh ung jeong jia ching jien soh purple bellies.
