Physical Description:

Dr. Withers’ ghost is capable of manifesting in two forms:

1. As he remembers himself at the point of his death: a plump, pale, round-shouldered man in his early thirties. This manifestation is typically clad in a spotless, starched lab coat or in a loose-fitting brown suit and walks with a slight limp on its right foot. Obviously ethereal it is devoid of all but the faintest hints of colour and flickers unsteadily around the edges of his form.

2. A putrid, weeks dead corpse with a gaping pistol in the back of its head. This apparition is more vividly coloured, the lab coat smeared and mired with mud, filth and splatters of dried blood. The manifestation’s eyes are pupil-less and white, its movements alternate between a lurching shamble and crisp, businesslike walk.

Topic: What Dreams Become - Q/A
Subject: Houserules

First off, there is no Initiative. You act in the order that you post. If you don't post before I update, you are assumed the most basic action if in combat and you act after any NPC (outside combat you will be picking your noses). That being said, you don't have to calculate initiative and any Merits concerning initiative are useless.

Good description award bonus points. Bad description award nothing. One-liners are very annoying I think. There are few things worse than writing 10-20 lines of in depth description only to have it responded with a "I walk to [Player's name]'s character and smack him in the face". It's even worse if it has bad spelling. Avoid this if possible, but if you can't then I won't make your characters suffer for it. Good description and spelling do award you with bonus points though, so keep that in mind.

I might have mentioned this but I will stress it: If you are using material from any other book than the core books (WoD, VtR, WtF, MtA, PtC, CtL) I want to know what you use from what book. That means book reference and page! I want to be able to look it up if what it does becomes questioned.

If you have a specialty in a certain Skill you can apply that specialty to another Skill if the circumstances allow it. Two specialties never stack though so if another specialty could apply you only get either and not both. My favorite example is if you are using the Investigation Skill to investigate a crime scene and you have a Wolf specialty in your Survival Skill you could apply that specialty to see that the victim had his throat bitten out by a wolf.

Scoring 5 or more successes on attacks (an Exceptional Success) upgrades the damage dealt by one stage. So Bashing becomes Lethal and Lethal becomes Aggravated. This is to show that the attack caused greater damage than it normally should (bones break, important organs are damaged, limbs severed, etc.)

EDIT: I have stopped using the BP system that we've been using and started using the original XP system, with some minor changes for Ghosts (since we have one playing). Here is a pricing list to make things more easy for you:

For Vampires

There are some changes made regarding Vampires' Disciplines since some are not powerful enough or too powerful. Mostly, they aren't powerful enough in comparison with others.

Celerity loses part of its boost since there isn't any Initiative (normally, you add your Celerity points to your Initiative roll) and so Celerity as a whole has lost part of its usefulness. To even things out, every point of Celerity allows you to attack one additional time per 'round'. Normally, you only get to attack once without the use of Merits or some other powers, but with this Houserule you can to the limit of your Composure or Resolve, which ever is lower. So if you have Celerity 3 but your Resolve is only 2 you only get two actions total (+1 action).

Resilience has felt a little powerless to me and so I came up with this more potent solution: In addition to all bonuses that you get from Resilience, it also transforms Lethal damage into Bashing the same way it turns Aggravated into Lethal (one level per point) and also turns Bashing into nothing the very same way.

This post may be edited or changed as often as needed before said rule comes into question.

Topic: What Dreams Become - Q/A
Subject: What Dreams Become - Q/A

Note: This is the Q/A thread. If you're interested in joining us check out the recruiting thread.

"Something is stirring down in Longchester, something not nice. Strange things are happening. The nicest people you could meet there turn out to be cold-blooded killers. People speak of moving shadows and nightmarish shapes in the dark. Animals become uncontrollable or even hostile. This evil is not something you can see or touch... yet.

"It all started when young Geoffrey Weatherby killed his father with a kitchen knife one morning. While being interrogated by the police he said he didn't even remember getting up that morning, that suddenly he was inside the police car covered in his old man's blood. Investigative minds will notice that this is not the last time something like this has happened. Another three murders have occurred since then where the murderer doesn't remember the event, not to mention all the unsolved murders.

"So what is happening in Longchester that makes good people turn against loved ones and kill without any reason? I do not know the answer for certain but I have my theories. It is possible that these events have nothing in common but I believe the opposite. Right now I'm leaving to meet up with a contact who says that he has some information about this. This is my first real lead and I am not going to let it slip. But in case I do not make it back I hope that whoever finds my notes will continue the investigation. Surely the police will not."

-Michelle Gardner's diary, last page.

This is the World of Darkness, a dark and, I dare say, evil reflection of our own world. Alleys are darker, nights colder, shadows are longer, and things tend to go bumping in the night. "We are the ones who bump back," might someone say but he usually ends up pretty dead. Heroes are corrupted, money weighs more than clean conscience and those who have a good heart get it ripped out from their chests. Believe me when I say, this is a bad place.

Introducing Longchester, England. This large town has it all, who knows why. Crimes, illegal brothels, madness, unnatural beasts and... something completely different. If you can imagine it, it happens frequently. If you can't imagine it, it still happens but less frequently. Longchester has its legends, from the scarecrow who kills the unlucky enough to be outside after dark to the market that sells human hearts but is never twice at the same place. But these are of course just legends, much like vampires or werewolves. Bottom line is that Longchester is no better than any other city or town in the world. Don't trust Mayor Fairhaven; everybody knows he frequently visits that brothel and that he secretly worships the devil.

This is a game mixed with horror, action and as much humor as you like to add to it. The most important thing is to have fun. You (the players) are here because you want to, not because I want you to. You can freely leave at any time.
That being said, I would like you to direct all your questions about character generation to the recruiting thread instead of here. Additionally, do not post your characters here in the Q/A thread but in the recruiting thread or in a PM directed to me. This thread is reserved for questions and chat about gameplay.

And now for the cast and characters:

Just remember a thing about a backstory which I suddenly got the urge to share with you. In one game that my girlfriend played in she wrote a full page of her character's backstory. Not bad in my opinion, but she wasn't finished. She wrote five pages or more about how her character's parents met! I loved that

...that it is kind of a cliché when people make the most standard character. I'm playing a really stupid and unappealing half-orc barbarian, with Int 5 and Cha 7. Kinda Cliché I think.

They made a joke about that "tavern" bit in an Icelandic movie just recently. There were some people playing D&D and started in a forest-clearing when a princess approaches and tells them the sad story of her kingdom's fate and ends it with a plead for their help. One of the player responded with a "well, at least we didn't start in a tavern"
I loved that scene.

Talking about a cliché: How often do you have to save a princess from a dreaded fate? Seriously. How many princesses can there be who all end up as prisoners?

Subject: What do you want in a game?

Call it types, genres, themes or moods, but what is your favorite type of game? I'm not asking systems or game lines here, but more in the line of genre. Do you like high-fantasy with flying airships and speaking animals? Or maybe gothic horror and angst is more your cup of tea? Or is espionage and intrigue your thing? Or perhaps you just want the biggest weapon to chop down the biggest foe?

Fantasy, horror, adventure, science fiction, etc. We all prefer either one over the other or some kind of a mix of them. Personally, I like a healthy mix depending on the day. Somedays I just need a healthy mix of horror/sci-fi (although I've never gotten one) or adventure/fantasy. I don't always like brainless killing but sometimes it feels good to chop something down. I believe I could play or GM almost everything and still have fun. But what about you?

The Skum could see that Vidar was not really pleased when he heard that the axe was not in the caves, or at least not in the hands of the Skums. But the blade and the dagger would be enough. Perhaps he could get some information about the other weapons. He was about to speak when the other Skum came running from the direction he had come from. They seemed agitated and spoke in a gurgling language that the Khord did not understand.

Before Glurblusius could explain to Vidar what was going on he had already guessed it. They had found the four Skum that he had killed earlier and were not exactly pleased about that.
"You must understand that your people attacked me earlier as if they had the intension to kill me. I did not want to kill any of your people Glurblusius, but until now you had not given me any reason not to." Lying was, much like sneaking, not a skill that Vidar was particularly good at. "You must also understand that I will not make a promise that I might not honor. But trust me when I say that if I harm another of your people it is not because I want to but because there was no other way."

"That long blade will be enough of a reward for me. Please keep that dagger as a token of my shame for what I have done or may need to do." Vidar bowed his head before Glurblusius and appeared as humble as he could (which is not to say that he actually appeared very humble). "But I will ask you to tell me what you know about the other weapons on this drawing." The Khord pulled forth the leather scroll which he had found in the caves and presented it to Glurblusius. "Preferably what you know about this axe."

I had two players who never wanted to play D&D because they thought it was all about hack'n'slash and not enough of actual roleplay. Of course, they always aimed at playing sadistic psychopaths from the beginning.

The lesson from this? When you want to play hack'n'slash when your DM wants you to roleplay, make a sadistic psychopath and just tell him that you are staying in character.

Nel began her work. She started analyzing the poison on the tip of the bolt which had killed their comrade. She was determined to figure out who had shot Maurd with the bolt, but this was not some procedure that could be rushed. Figuring out exactly which poison was used would take some time, even hours.

The others of the group did not do much after they came in. They knew that whatever they would do next would rest on what Nel would find. And so they rested their muscles and bones. None of them said a word and nothing broke the silence except Nel and her tools, until a rattling of keys came from the front door.

Topic: The Chakran Portal - an Adventure in Audalis
Subject: Vidar

Vidar walked slowly towards the altar while looking paranoid into into every direction and at every fishman in the cave. As he drew near the altar, the fishman wearing bones drew forth a dagger. Vidar was about to lift his axe in a defensive response but the fishman suddenly began to speak in the Khord's native language.

“Do not be afraid, my best Khord. We are not here to harm to you. In fact, we are happy of your coming.”

The fishman drew forth a fish and began cutting it with the dagger. Only then could Vidar see that it had the same Seleta as the axe he was searching for. "If you are indeed happy that I have come to these caves," the Khord said, "you have a weird way of showing it."

“We know that our previous meeting wasn’t a glad one, but you must pardon me and us for that. I am Glurblusius, Shaman of us Skum. I am going to tell you the matter we are happy of your coming.”

Glurblusius told Vidar a long story about these caves and the creature he had seen when he was captured. The bottom line was that they needed his help and would reward him with what ever they could. Vidar thought about it. On one hand, this was the chance he was waiting for to get his grandfather's axe as well as it was the kind of battle that he wanted to fight, a battle that would bring him well earned glory. On the other hand, they were only two against the beast since, according to Glurblusius, the other Skum, as they called themselves, would be mind controlled by the beast if they would get too close.
However, the reward outweighed the risk. The glory would be well earned and the axe would finally be returned to the halls of clan Thorudrin.

"Very well," he said, "I will help you. As a reward I wish to claim my grandfather's axe, an axe with the same Seleta as your dagger, as well as any other such weapon that you seem fit for this task. However, if we are to do this, I will require my shield, the one that was taken from me when I was captured, as well as sufficient healing. Then we can start planning our attack. I do not intend to attack that beast blindly."

Topic: GMs - Most Memorable *Player* Characters?
Subject: aæj

There was this one gnome I once played which has been promised instant death the next time I play him. The character didn't actually do anything that bad, it was simply how I acted while playing him; I crept the other players out too much.

Marou was a male gnome bard which began the game by passing out from drinking too much. During that time, the gay elf also passed out so the rest of them decided to do a little prank (at the time I had a call from nature so I had to be excused). They undressed the elf and my gnome and put them in bed together. When Marou woke up he was in complete shock and cried most of the game until he completely lost it.

Marou was also used as "human" shield against a pack of wolves (literally picked up and used as a shield) and later he was crushed by a dragon (survived though). I had a lot of fun with him and I want to bring him up in a game someday, if only to have him killed and get it over with

I also have a character coming up in a campaign We're about to start. I rolled rather bad, getting 15, 15, 11, 10, 9 and 7. After some tests I figured a barbarian would work with these stats, so I made a stupid and unappealing half-orc barbarian with Str 17, Dex 11, Con 15, Int 5, Wis 10, and Cha 7. With Gauntlets of Ogre Power and a +1 Greatsword he deals at least 9 damage in every hit and at most 19 damage in any regular hit. But the most appealing thing about this Character is his flaws of stupidity and unattractiveness. I think I'll enjoy this character
If he does become interesting I'll post his story someday.

You have successfully forced the universe into becoming nothing. Now nothing exists.

I wish I could wish for something.

Subject: Vidar

Time seemed to move slower while Vidar was moving away from the pile of rotten corpses and fish. He was worried that once they would notice the fishmen he had killed he would be overwhelmed by enemy forces. He could deal with them separately well enough but as soon as they gathered in numbers his time would come.

Then he saw a light up ahead and noticed a widening cave. He hid in a shadow and tried to see what was up ahead. He saw several fishmen and a group of them had gathered around an altar. Behind it stood a single fishman who seemed to be the leader, dressed in what looked like a sort of exoskeleton. That single fishman pointed into several directions and then pointed directly towards the Khord. Vidar was certain that they couldn't see him and that the fishman was only pointing randomly. But then they motioned him to come closer and the Khord reflexively looked behind him to be sure they weren't meaning someone else. He waited for few seconds to see what happened but nothing did. Slowly, he moved into the cave with fastened grip on his axe and shield, wary if someone would suddenly attack.
He walked up to the altar with a serious look on his face. He was going to let the fishmen know that he was not happy with their hospitality even though he would not say a word.
